WELCOME Registration Policies

CONTENTS

Tuition & payment Full payment for courses under $500 is required at the time of registration. For courses costing more than $500, we ask you to pay one-half of the total cost at the time of registration. The remainder is due 45 days before the class begins. Tuition is on a per-person basis and includes a $15 one-time, non-refundable administration fee. Private lesson packages are excluded from partial payments options. Cancellation Policy For all course registrations, including youth classes, the following cancellation policy applies: For private sailing lessons and boatbuilding classes, the cancellation policy outlined at the time of booking and in the confirmation email is enforced. Cancellation/change outside of 45 days = full refund less a non-refundable $15 admin fee. Cancellation/change within 45 – 7 days prior to start date = a $15 admin fee and tuition credit for the remaining balance toward a course within the same calendar year. Cancellation/change within 7 days of start date = 50% tuition credit of course fee available toward a course within the same calendar year. No refund or credit available after the class has started. In case of emergency or insufficient number of registrations, CWB reserves the right to cancel a course and refund the participants in full. Because of this policy, we strongly urge you to buy refundable airline tickets or flight insurance. CWB will not be responsible for any loss on nonrefundable airline tickets. Course Details

How to use this program catalog: This document describes the variety of programs offered at The Center for Wooden Boats and gives general registration information. For specific details such as prices and dates, as well as registration, please visit the websites listed next to each program.

Upon receipt of payment, we will provide you with relevant course information, including itinerary, materials list, suggested tools list, clothing list, accommodations, directions and other pertinent information. Please read the information carefully before coming to class. Materials costs are included in course fees unless otherwise noted in the course description. We supply tools needed for courses, but encourage you to bring your own for certain courses. Risk All of our courses involve some level of risk. You assume full responsibility for your own safety and must provide your own health and accident insurance. You will be required to sign a liability waiver prior to participation.

POND BOAT SAILING

Rent a Pirate Pond Boat to sail on Lake Union Park’s Model Boat Pond. These 39" pond boats are scale models of the R-Boat Pirate, which is on exhibit at our docks at South Lake Union. Sailing these miniature racing yachts is a great way to learn the basic concepts of sailing while enjoying time at the park. All ages. Location

Our 42nd Lake Union Wooden Boat Festival celebrates the history, the craft of and the culture wooden boats, large and small. RENT A BOAT CWB.ORG/RENT We are proud to offer small wooden boats for rent on Lake Union and Saratoga Passage. At South Lake Union we rent rowboats, double kayaks, sailboats, canoes and paddle-boards. Go for a sail, explore our maritime past and present, and see the Seattle skyline from the water. At Cama Beach we also offer similar craft to rent, as well as small motorboats.

YOUTH PROGRAMS Youth Sailing and Boatbuilding programs are designed to engender skills in leadership, observation and decision-making while exploring maritime heritage and skills in a dynamic hands-on environment. Team-building games, rigging, knot tying, tool use and demonstrations are preparation for sailing adventures and boat construction. Our talented and dedicated team of instructors are US Sailing, First Aid and CPR certified.

Pay-What-You-Can Scholarships Prices on our website are "suggested prices" because we want to make hands-on experiences available to everyone. If you need a discounted program, scholarship forms are available online. If you are in a position to pay more than the suggested price, additional funds will contribute directly to making youth programs more widely accessible.

In this introduction to sailing, new sailors learn the basic theory and terminology of sailing to build a foundation of skills: tacking, jibing, sail trim, weight balance and capsize recovery.

Intermediate Sailing

Learn new skills and knowledge such as pointing and footing, getting out of irons, overboard recovery, lay lines and Rules-of-the-Road. This is the next step for those who know the basics of sailing and are ready to sail an El Toro solo. Intermediate Sailing refines observation and problem-solving skills while continuing to build confidence and independence.

Advanced Sailing

Campers explore life on board a ship, and plunge into the science of steam-powered engines, navigation, and model sailboat building.

We’ve teamed up with Pacific Science Center to create a week of fun, science-filled sailing. Delve into the math and physics behind sailing and boat design. Spend your morning at PSC building model boats and conducting experiments, and an afternoon on Lake Union.

STEM Sailing with Frog Prints E! This camp for middle-school aged girls takes place in the classroom and on the water. Students will explore the topics of Science Technology Engineering and Math through scientific investigations, underwater robot building, sailing and exploration of the SS Virginia V!

Design, build and try out a boat of your own imagination. Students work in teams to design and build a boat that will carry their team across the waters of Lake Union on Launch Day. FIELD TRIPS The Center for Wooden Boats offers a variety of field trips at our South Lake Union location.

These field trips use the marine environment and classic wooden boats to engage students in the Pacific Northwest’s unique culture, history and environment. We provide hands-on educational opportunities year-round for students from pre-school through high school. Programs support state standards in history, social studies, math, science and fitness.

CWB’s Learn to Race class is an opportunity to improve your sailing skills while learning the rules and tactics behind sailboat racing. Although not a required prerequisite, this class is a great way to hone your skills for RaceNOW! – CWB’s Summer Racing series.

RaceNOW! Head out in our fleet of Blanchard Jr. Knockabouts for summer evening races and some friendly competition. For new sailors, crewing during a race is one of the best ways to solidify your basic skills. Sign up as a team with friends, family or coworkers, or meet new people.

CWB is opening a new Boatshop in the Wagner Education Center this year, which will dramatically improve our ability to offer a range of traditional maritime workshops and classes. The following pages represent a sample of the Adult Workshops that will be offered. A host of talented boatbuilders and craftspeople from the local community will bring the new and current Boatshops to life by passing along traditional skills through hands-on workshops, designed for people of all skill levels. ADULT MARITIME SKILLS Captain’s License with U.S. Maritime Academy

CWB.ORG/CAPTAINS-LICENSE

Have you always wanted to get your captain’s license, but shudder at the thought of all those tests? Captain Jeff Sanders teaches what you need to know, administers the tests in class, then walks you through the official paperwork so that, upon completion, students are ready to go to the Coast Guard and get their license. Classes are at night, three times a week for eight weeks. For information, visit www.usmaritime.us The first night is free for interested folks who would like to know about the licensing process and find out how to put together their sea time.

Oar Making

CWB.ORG/OAR-MAKING

Students will learn how to make an oar from start to finish that will stand the test of time and not end up in a landfill. No tools or experience required but students can bring in their own planes and chisels if desired. During this course topics will be covered that include oar design, spar gauge theory/use, and proper use of hand tools.

ADULT MARITIME SKILLS Beginning Woodworking

This course is the perfect introduction to the traditional skills of woodworking. You will learn how to safely and skillfully use basic hand tools and power tools and get an introduction to safe use of the larger table saw, band saw, planers and more! From this foundation you will be able to confidently move on to basic joinery, laminating, fastening and finishing a project or maybe even a boat through one of our other courses!

Woodworking Unplugged

In this class you will learn how to use hand tools to produce a useful small project. You will learn how to properly utilize each tool and create your own shavings by smoothing surfaces with planers or chiseling to precision. Experienced builder Casey Wilkinson of Kea Kayaks walks students through CLC’s custom stich and glue process. CLC has been delivering these six-day classes for over 20 years. At the end of the class students will take home a waterproof hull ready for finish work. In the past students have built kayaks, wherries, and dories.

Shaker Box Making Class

Learn basic woodworking skills utilizing several different tools to make your own set of Shaker pantry boxes in this two day workshop at scenic Cama Beach. These nesting boxes, made from bending wood strips into oval shapes, were a way to store food before the age of plastic bins.

Bronze Casting

Learn how to use all the tools necessary to cast bronze using sandcasting technology. You will cover the basics of pattern-making, sand molding, and bronze casting during this engaging hands-on course.

The Virginia V Foundation preserves and activates the 95 year-old National Historic Landmark, the steamship Virginia V. The Virginia V partners with CWB in the Sunday Public Rides program, offering limited rides during the summer months.

STEAMSHIP SATURDAYS: LAKE UNION CRUISES ON THE SS VIRGINIA V CWB.ORG/STEAMSHIP-SATURDAYS Join us for a narrated cruise on Lake Union aboard the 125’ steamship Virginia V. We’ll learn about the sights, sounds, and history of Lake Union while cruising aboard this National Historic Landmark vessel with a fully operational steam engine.

Northwest Seaport shares the history and stories of National Historic Landmark vessels docked at the Historic Ships Wharf in Lake Union Park, Seattle. CWB has partnered with Northwest Seaport to offer Tugboat Story Time, where younger children can enjoy maritime literature and boats. Join other pre-schoolers and parents aboard the Arthur Fos s every second and fourth Thursdays at 11am to listen to sea stories and maritime picture books read aloud.

M/V LOTUS

The Motor Vessel Lotus was built in Seattle in 1909, designed to transport her wealthy owner and his family up and down the Inside Passage between Puget Sound and Alaska. Today, she transports visitors and volunteers back in time. M/V Lotus is open for tours Thursday through Sunday, 11am to 4pm, yearround while at the dock on South Lake Union.
