Neil Rabinowitz Photography Exhibit

NEIL RABINOWITZ

Neil Rabinowitz has been photographing wooden boats throughout a career which has included over 1,200 magazine covers. He began working in boatyards as a teenager and - in his early years - apprenticed at Hinckley and later for famed builder George Stadel restoring Nina, Bounding Home, and the Lawley designed, Valiant. He sailed the Pete Culler designed 120’ schooner Sea Star and cruised and raced across the Pacific, South Seas and Atlantic several times. The boats varied from maxi racers to wooden classics and included Ballyhoo, Ondine, Windward Passage, an Alden 57, Charisma, and a variety of vessels from 500+’ superyachts to simpler days on an H-28. He earned a 100 Ton Coast Guard license, survived many boat deliveries, and published some tales in the Yacht Bum Chronicles. Since completing a journalism degree, he has published hundreds of features about adventure travel, lifestyle and the marine industry. He was the Seattle Times Boating Writer and provided the first 360 covers (30 years) of the regional Northwest Yachting Magazine. He has been a consistent outspoken voice promoting the prowess and regional benefits of Northwest’s pioneering big boat industry to the publishing world since the early 80’s. Some photo assignments include the Olympics, the Indy 500, the America’s Cup, numerous wilderness expeditions, many of the planet’s wildest whitewater rafting descents, as well as images from the cockpit air to air in aviation’s most exciting aircraft. In addition to his magazine and book covers, his portfolio includes work for Sports Illustrated, National Geographic, Men’s Journal, Forbes, Fortune, Town & Country, Outside, Rolex, Nike, Volvo, numerous books, calendars and nearly every boating and travel publication. His assignments have taken him around the globe for advertising and editorial clients, photographing the architecture of palatial superyacht interiors to ultra-high-end hotels and rustic remote resorts to adrenaline sports. While he still travels extensively to photograph new builds, regattas, charters and superyachts, above all else, he enjoys photographing the pace, artful craft, and simple grace and integrity of wooden boats. Neil works from his studio on a sunny five acre spread on the south end of Bainbridge Island where he has raised a family and his library of ten million photographs comprises one of the largest marine collections in the world. He is proud to be a supporter of The Center for Wooden Boats. neilrabinowitz.com Currently on display in the J.R. Duncan Exhibit Hall

Boathouse Updates 12

BOATHOUSE UPDATE With the launch of our new Wagner Education Center, we’re keeping our existing floating Boathouse and Boatshop right where they are. The Center for Wooden Boats will continue to offer waterfront programs and exhibits for viewing at the existing Boathouses and floats. Now, the experience will be even better, because with some activity moving onshore in the Wagner Education Center, there will be more room inside the Boathouse for visitors to explore and program participants to gather. Routine boat maintenance will move to the onshore Boatshop, leaving the floating Boatshop available for skills workshops, boatbuilding programs and working exhibits. We are beginning the restoration their former glory with much-needed maintenance and improvements. We will also be restoring the top floor of the Boathouse to the beloved library that once was.

Cama Beach State Park 24

WYATT HOREJSI CAMA BEACH’S NEW OPERATIONS MANAGER Wyatt Horejsi is the new operations manager at Cama Beach. Originally from Minnesota, he grew up around small boats and learned to sail on Lake Superior. Moving to Seattle 5 years ago, his professional background includes field service, CNC machining, and programming in the manufacturing industry as well as event and facilities management in the restaurant industry. He served as a volunteer at the CWB South Lake Union Livery and Boatshop prior to finding a permanent position, and you may recognize him from the 2018 festival. Those familiar with Cama Beach will be happy to know that there will continue to be a boathouse dog, although Wyatt’s husky mix Kesha is slightly smaller than the previous mascot. Kesha also enjoys boating and is just happy to jump in to a rowboat or a Pelican, although she will miss the ducks and geese of SLU. As CWB grows in South Lake Union, Wyatt hopes the increased visibility can help raise awareness of CWB at Cama Beach. He’s looking forward to launching new and exciting projects and programs forward while preserving the quirky history of the park. Wyatt is enthusiastic about working with Cama Beach’s boats, volunteers, local community, and park visitors to keep the Boat House operating as an icon and memorial to the wooden small boat history of Puget Sound.

33 Lake Union Wooden Boat Festival 2018 Recap

On September 29 & 30, The 42nd Annual Lake Union Wooden Boat Festival brought Lake Union Park alive in a celebration of maritime heritage.

The Lake Union Wooden Boat Festival is CWB’s signature event. Last year, CWB hosted dozens of historic boats ranging from small rowboats to 100-foot pleasure boats and work boats. The 2018 festival offered plenty of fun and informative experiences for people of all ages and abilities. There were activities such as youth toy boat building and pond boat sailing, traditional boatbuilding demonstrations for curious adults, and free public sail and boat rides. Boat owners opened up their vessels to attendees, and the docks were filled with community members throughout the weekend. This was also the first public event to use the newly-completed Wagner Education Center. CWB provides access to the water without barriers, and the festival marked the end of the summer season with a fun, inclusive event in the heart of Seattle.
