Data Security in the cloud By Dr.N.Kala Baskar, Cyber Forensic Expert

C

loud Computing is a term, which involves virtualization, distributed computing, networking and web-services. A Cloud computing system consists of three major components such as clients, data center, and distributed servers. It is a way of offering services to users by allowing them to tap into a massive pool of shared computing resources such as servers, storage and network. Clients are the End-Users which generally fall into three categories mobile, thin and thick. Clients system only displays the information. Clients are the end-users usually fall into three categories namely mobile, thin and thick. Thin clients do not have any computation work, all processing are done at the server end and also they don't have any internal memory. In thick clients browsers such as internet explorer, Mozilla Firefox, or Google chrome are used to accommodate systems, associated components such as telecommunication, distributed servers hosting varied applications. Cloud offers virtualization technique. User can use services by simply plug into the cloud and pay only for what he uses. All these features made a cloud computing very advantageous and demanding. But the data privacy is a key security problem in cloud computing which comprises of data integrity, data confidentiality and user privacy specific concerns. Most of the persons do not prefer cloud to store their data as they are having a fear of losing the privacy of their confidential data. This paper introduces some cloud computing data security problem and its strategy to solve them which also satisfies the user regarding their data. Cloud computing has four different delivery models according to NIST (1): (i) Private Cloud in which cloud services are provided solely for an organization and are managed by the organization or a third party. These services may exist off-site. (ii) Public Cloud in which cloud services are available to the public and owned by an organization selling the cloud services, for example, Amazon cloud service. (iii) Community cloud in which cloud services are shared by several organizations for supporting a specific community that has shared concerns (e.g., mission, security requirements, policy, and compliance considerations). These services may be managed by the organizations or a third party and may exist offsite. A

special case of community cloud is the Government or G-Cloud. This type of cloud computing is provided by one or more agencies (service provider role), for use by all, or most, government agencies (user role). (iv) Hybrid Cloud which is a composition of different cloud computing infrastructure (public, private or community). An example for hybrid cloud is the data stored in private cloud of a travel agency that is manipulated by a program running in the public cloud. Data Security in Cloud: As vendors provide cloud storage services to the user through network, typically on internet. This gives rise to various security and privacy (2) concerns to user regarding their data. These concerns comprises of, 1. Access Issues Threat of accessing sensitive information of the user is very high in the cloud. There are more chances of data leakage from the system in cloud environment. Cloud accounts and sensitive data stored in cloud system may be Hacked and Malicious intruders thereby pilfering data. Confidential information and data may be modified in unauthorized way. Privacy of the data is endangered because of the above reasons. Deployment of the cloud centre in different countries and the data can be stored in different cloud node in different location. There exists different law in different countries, so the security management can be at risk. 2. Lack of User Control Service implementation is usually hidden in cloud environment. The hidden services include implementation, technology and management. Lack of information regarding the location of data is provided. Servers are processing data, the networks that are transmitting the data, the reason being flexibility and scalability, of cloud environment. The cloud users are not sure about security of data and privacy of data that are stored and operated in the cloud. When compared with conventional computers owned by individuals or servers owned organizations have more control over India

their data including who can access what kind of data. Whereas in a cloud user has no control over the data stored on a cloud server is does not provide the opportunity. Only the cloud service provide is responsible for control of the data storage while processing the data. All depends on service level which is a legal document. 3. Lack of Trust Auditing is an important mechanism to monitor the transaction both inbound and outbound. However, Cloud Service Provider does not provide any audit mechanism to monitor their internal transactions which assure the users regarding their data security. It is difficult to ensure that the data is secure without any proof. Lack of trust in the cloud fails when it comes to trust between user and service provider. Cloud is fail in making a trust between user and provider. This is the main reason as to why various organizations and peoples are skeptical in adopting and migrating to cloud. Cloud has mobile and vibrant nature due to which there is no clear aspect that who is legally responsible to ensure privacy of sensitive data put by user on cloud. This also causes lack of trust in cloud. Improved legal protection is required when adapting to Cloud computing services. 4. Encryption One of the solutions offered by the cloud service providers is encryption. However, it is not a absolute solution to securing the data. Cloud computing storage is principally correlated to storage of data, isolation, storage space, recovery of data and long term survivability. Customer privacy information could be obtained by unscrupulous business. Once the data is stored in the cloud, the control of the data is transferred to the hands of cloud computing providers. Some unscrupulous businesses can get the customer privacy information by unfair means. Customers do not understand internal processes of the cloud computing and location of storage information. Cloud computing services provided for customers are difficult to achieve full transparency. Customers do not understand internal processes of cloud computing and data storage location information. Customers should have the precise information and right to supervise and audit of cloud computing services in order to fully ensure the security of customer data. Encryption is the best option for securing data in transit as well. In addition, authentication and integrity protection mechanisms ensure that data only goes where the customer wants it to go and it is not modified in transit.

5. Legal and regulatory issues are extremely important in cloud computing that have security implications. To verify that a cloud provider has strong policies and practices that address legal and regulatory issues, each customer must have its legal and regulatory experts inspect cloud provider's policies and practices to ensure their adequacy. The issues to be considered in this regard include data security and export, compliance, auditing, data retention and destruction, and legal discovery. In the areas of data retention and deletion, trusted storage and trusted platform module access techniques can play a key role in limiting access to sensitive and critical data. 6. Other areas for security concerns in cloud computing: (1) data at rest, (2) data in transit, (3) authentication, (4) separation between customers, (5) cloud legal and regulatory issues and (6) incident response. THREATS IN CLOUD COMPUTING The Cloud Security Alliance did a research on the threats facing cloud computing and it identified the flowing major threats: § Failures in Provider Security § Attacks by Other Customers § Availability and Reliability Issues § Legal and Regulatory Issues § Perimeter Security Model Broken § Integrating Provider and Customer Security Systems § Abuse and Nefarious Use of Cloud Computing § Insecure Application Programming Interfaces § Malicious Insiders § Shared Technology Vulnerabilities § Data Loss/Leakage § Account, Service & Traffic Hijacking § Unknown Risk Profile SOLUTION OF SECURITY ISSUES Finding Key Cloud Provider First solution is of finding the right cloud provider. Different vendors have different cloud IT security and data management. A cloud vendor should be well established, experienced, standards and regulation. Ensure vendor lockout. Clear Contract Contract with cloud vendor should be clear. So if cloud vendor closes before contract, enterprise can claim. India

Recovery Facilities Cloud vendors should provide very good recovery facilities. So, if data are fragmented or lost due to certain issues, they can be recovered and continuity of data can be managed. Better Enterprise Infrastructure Enterprise must have infrastructure which facilitates installation and configuration of hardware components such as firewalls, routers, servers, proxy servers and software such as operating system, thin clients, etc. Also should have infrastructure which prevents from cyber attacks. Use of Data Encryption for security purpose Developers should develop the application which provides encrypted data for security. So additional security from enterprise is not required and all security burdens are placed on cloud vendor. CLOUD COMPUTATION IMPLEMENTATION GUIDELINES 1. Steps to Cloud Security a. Proper understanding of the cloud by realizing how the cloud's uniquely loose structure affects the security of data sent into it. b. Transparency by making sure that the cloud provider can supply detailed information on its security architecture and is willing to accept regular security audit should be demanded. c. Internal Security by making sure that the cloud provider's internal security technologies and practices including firewalls and user access controls are very strong and can mesh very well with the cloud security measures be reinforced. d. Consider the Legal Implications by knowing how the lawsandregulationswillaffectwhatyousendintothecloud. e. Constantly monitoring any development or changes in the cloud technologies and practices that may impact the security of individual or organizational. 2. Information Security Principles § CIA (Confidentiality, Integrity, Availability) Triad of Information security be taken care off.

§ Confidentiality-Prevent unauthorized disclosure § Integrity-Preserve information integrity § Availability-Ensure information is available when needed Data Segregation Find out what is done to segregate or isolate the data, and proof that encryption schemes are deployed and are effective assured. Disaster Recovery Verification Verify the restoration policy of data and service and evaluate the duration of recovery of complete data during the strike of disaster. Disaster Recovery A contractual commitment to support specific types of investigations, such as the research involved in the discovery phase of a lawsuit be agreed upon, and support such activities in the past of the service provider should be verified. Assuming the support will only lead to risk. Long-term Viability Process of recovering data in case the vendor fails to provide service must be assured. Agreement should be signed to recover the format that could easily be imported into a replacement application. ISSUES TO CLARIFY BEFORE ADOPTING CLOUD COMPUTING User Access. Information on the hiring and oversight of privileged administrators and the controls over their access to information must be made available to the users. Major Companies should demand and enforce their own hiring criteria for personnel that will Operate their cloud computing environments. Regulatory Compliance Make sure your provider is willing to submit to external Audits and security certifications. Data location Enterprises should require that the cloud computing provider store and process data in specific jurisdictions and should obey the privacy rules of those Jurisdictions.

List of cloud security threats(3) Threats

Description

Confidentiality Insider user t hreats: •Malicious cloud provider user •Malicious cloud customer user •Malicio us third party user (Supporting either the cloud provider or customer organizations)

The threat of insiders accessing customer data heldwithin the cloud is greater as each of the deliverymodels can introduce the need for multiple internalusers: SaaS – cloud customer and provider administrators PaaS - application developers and test enviro nment managers IaaS - third party platform consultants India

External attacker threats: •Remote software attack of cloud infrastructure •Remote software attack of cloud applications •Remote hardware attack against the cloud •Remote software and hardware attack against cloud user organizations’ endpoint software and hardware •Social engineering of cloud provider users, and cloud customer users.

The threat from external attackers may be perceivedto apply more to public Int ernet facing clouds, however all types of cloud delivery models are affected by external attackers, particularly in private clouds where user endpoints can be targeted. Cloud providers with large data stores holding credit card details, personal information and sensitive government or intellectual property, will be subjected to attacks from groups, with significant resources, attempting to retrieve data. This includes the threat of hardware attack, social engineering and supply chainattacks by dedicated attack ers.

Data leakage: •Failure of security access rights across multiple domains •Failure of electronic and physical transport systems for cloud data and backups

A threat from widespread data leakage amongstmany, potentially competitor organizations, using thesame cloud provider could be caused by human error or faulty hardware that will lead to informationcompromise.

Integrity Data segregation: •Incorrectly d efined security perimeters •Incorrect configuration of virtual machines and hypervisors

The integrity of data within complex cloud hosting environments such as SaaS configured to sharecomputing resource amongst customers could provide a threat against d ata integrity if system resources are effectively segregated.

User access: •Poor identity and access management procedures

Implementation of poor access control procedures creates many threat opportunities, for example thatdisgruntled ex -employees of cloud provider organizations maintain remote access to administer customer cloud services, and can cause intentional damage to t heirdata sources. The threat of impact of data quality is increased as cloud providers host many customers’ data. The introduction of a faulty or misconfigured componentrequired by another cloud user could potentially impact the integrity of data for other cloud users shari ng infrastructure.

Data quality: • Introduction of faulty application or infrastructure components

Availability Change management: • Customer penetration testing impacting other cloud customers • Infrastructure changes upon cloud provider, customer and third party systems impacting cloud customers

As the cloud provider has increasing responsibility for change management within all cloud delivery models, there is a threat that changes could introduce negative effects. These could be caused by software or hardware changes to existing cloud services.

Denial of service threat: • Network bandwidth distributed denial of service • Network DNS denial of service • Application and data denial of service

The threat of denial of service against available cloud computing resource is generally an external threat against public cloud services. However, the threat can impact all cloud service models as external and internal threat agents could introduce application or hardware components that cause a denial of service. The threat of disruption to cloud services caused by physical access is different between large cloud service providers and their customers. These providers should be experienced in securing large data center facilities and have considered resilience among other availability strategies. There is a threat that cloud user infrastructure can be physically disrupted more easily whether by insiders or externally where less secure office environments or remote working is standard practice.

Physical disruption: • Disruption of cloud provider IT services through physical access • Disruption of cloud customer IT services through physical access • Disruption of third party WAN providers services

Exploiting weak recovery procedures: • Invocation of inadequate disaster recovery or business continuity processes

The threat of inadequate recovery and incident management procedures being initiated is heightened when cloud users consider recovery of their own in house systems in parallel with those managed by third party cloud service providers. If these procedures are not tested then the impact upon recovery time may be significant.

to budgetary, manpower and resource constraints. The traditional outsourcing model is not really suitable for these SMBs as their actual need is to outsource daily, ongoing tasks which are not suited to either the freelancing model or the more expensive project outsourcing companies. "A client can set up their 'own office' in India at zero investment cost; get to retain control over their projects, hire talented employees and make big savings with VE because our office and staff function as an extension of the client's own local office and staff. It is the most flexible and costeffective business model today in the outsourcing landscape, and particularly suitable for Small and Medium Businesses (SMBs) across the globe," said VirtualEmployee to The CEO Magazine. Their revenue model is operated as a prepaid monthly rolling contract where clients only pay for the service they have consumed. H

ow an enterprise can run their business without a network? And how a network can be formed without cloud ? - The Cloud Service is no longer restricted within MNCs, it is seen that cloud can offer enormous benefits for start-ups also. As a result, cloud related services are rapidly increasing. Recently Market Research Media, a portal for entrepreneurs mentioned " The US Federal Government alone estimates that it will spend $26.1USD Billion on cloud services from 20102015." Indian IT Companies and companies of some other South East Asian countries, are also spending huge money for cloud related research. After the lunch of Digital India, it is expected that this service will be very much significant than ever. As well as the private firms, the government schemes will also attract citizens to use digital services. To ensure smooth functioning of software and some other tools, there is no other option rather than the cloud. This is the time for newbies to take advantage of Cloud service. The reasons are mentioned below : Saves Money and Time Money and Time are the crux of any business. It becomes very significant, when it comes to Information Technology sector. Most of the young entrepreneurs spend huge money, waste long time to manage other things. They must think twice before ignoring Cloud related services. Entrepreneurs prefer cloud service mainly because of these two reasons. It enables a start-up firm to save money and time. As a result they can operate their business easily and invest money in some other ares.

Smart Services Cloud is the smartest way to deliver services in any region. It is also considered as the easiest and costeffective solution to host a website , using a dedicated server. After all it helps to run a multifunction website quickly. Service providers offer customized services since you don't find any difficulty to use the service. Pay-as-Use Cloud service is cost-effective, comparing to other services. You don't have to invest a hefty amount initially. Most of the service providers are thinking for start-ups to reduce the bill for cloud related services. That's why lot of newly formed firms are building their services using cloud. It easily attracts clients because they have to pay only for the data they have consumed. Scalable Service Cloud is not only a scalable service, it also allows you to monitor usage of data and measure some other services. It keeps you updated - who have been using the service. Modern cloud services are also answerable to you about the users and duration of using. India

It presents some other authentic information, related to clients. Networking In today's market, it is impossible to run a business without networking. Cloud Services make it happen. Through Networking, it not only allows an enterprise to strengthen their presence in another region, it enables them to get clients from different region. Security Cloud service providers take care of securityrelated issues. Since security is emerging as a big threat, those companies are focusing to overcome those issues. It is your service provider's liability - not yours.

Availing the service, you can get a secured storage and can unhesitatingly use the service. Rather than storing those data in some other medias, it's better to store on cloud. No need to Carry Documents Suppose you are in a meeting but you have not brought some important documents. At the moment you have to produce those documents to show some unique features, offered by your company. How can you resolve the matter? As a result, the client may reject your proposal. Once you transfer all the important data on cloud, you don't have to worry. You can produce the uploaded documents anywhere. Even you don't have to travel to produce papers, using cloud you can easily provide access to others .

Also, order a 'Thali' for enjoying the best of what the city offers, all in one place. Rishikesh can be also considered as a two-in-one place wherein along with nature beauty, you can also see it as a devotional place. The Ganga is a holy river which looks fresher in Rishikesh than any other places in India. More Information about Rishikesh Rishikesh, over the years has become extremely popular as the top spiritual destination in the world, especially after the Beatles association with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi here in the late '60s. HOW ENTREPRENEURS PLAY A VITAL ROLE IN DIFFERENT SECTIONS OF SOCIETY

T

he entrepreneurs are actually the people who develop business ideas and implement them into effect in fostering economic growth. Even, entrepreneurs are considered as the back-bone of a country in the terms of not only economic growth but also infrastructural empowerment. It is a fair fact that entrepreneurs are playing a pivotal role in reducing unemployment of the nations by providing opportunities to youngsters and desired people. In fact, they provide opportunities to youths to whiten their talent as these talents are the building blocks for the nations. We may pay our attention towards the employment in India by a surprising figure of comparison between number of government servants and the people working in private sectors. Shocking; but the fact is that only approx. thirty-two lakhs people are working under government services whereas the total population in India is more than hundred and twenty-five crore. Isn't it enough to understand the role of entrepreneurs? Entrepreneurs empower nations directly or indirectly by various initiatives and decisions. They promote capital formation by mobilizing the idle saving of public. With startups or settled firms, entrepreneurs provide a large-scale employment which is a chronic problem not only in India but also in many developing or

underdeveloped nations. There are some regional disparities in our society, thus entrepreneurs are playing a vital role to remove this monopoly through setting-up industries in less developed and backward areas. The growth of industries in such areas leads to a large number of public benefits like infrastructure, health, education and entertainment, etc. Hence, such initiatives bring a balance in living standard among different sections of society. Entrepreneurs promote capital formation by mobilizing the idle saving of the public and the help in reducing concentration of economic power. Along with stimulate the equitable redistribution of wealth, income and political power in the interest of the country; they also encourage effective resource mobilization of capital and skill which might otherwise remain unutilized and idle. Cast factor has been a conscious issue in India from very beginning till now. In such circumstance, entrepreneurs can play a vital role to remove this evil. With the help of induce backward and forward linkages which stimulate the process of economic development in the country, entrepreneurs provide a platform where the people of different cast, region and religion work together. Thus, we can say "an economy is the effect for which entrepreneurship is the cause
