We’re Not That Bad
The truth behind the assumptions about our generation. BY LEAH GRAHAM EDITOR
In a couple weeks, millions of families will gather around their dining room tables for Thanksgiving, the most ironic of all American holidays. The argument about the insincerity of Thanksgiving is a tired one. It’s almost as worn out as aunts, uncles, grandparents and other assorted elders starting an unwanted lecture with, “When I was your age...” The hypocrisy of Thanksgiving is often matched only by the hypocrisy of older generations condemning millennials. Especially when the criticism thrown at us (and our generation) is unjustified. Here’s where our critics go wrong. 1. They say that we can’t control ourselves, but according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), teen pregnancy is at an all time low and cigarette smoking among high school students is at its lowest level in 22 years. 2. They say that we’re selfish, but according to Walden University and Harris Interactive, over 80% of millennials have donated money, goods or services to charitable organizations. Bentley University’s Center for Women and Business found that 75% of millennials are not willing to give up their values for their career. Additionally, 61% of millennials are worried about the future of the world, according to the Huffington Post. 3. They say that we’re violent, but the CDC found that fights on school property have been cut in half during the past two decades. 4. They say that we’re ignorant, but the Pew Research Center reports that the high school dropout rate is at an all time low and our generation is on track to be the best-educated group of young adults in U.S. history. 5. They say that we have it easy, but millennials are reporting the highest levels of clinical anxiety, stress, and depression than any other generation at the same age, according to Psychology Today. The teenager rolling her eyes at the chastising adult is the epitome of cliché, but there’s an undeniable truth to it. We’re sick of being told how inadequate “kids today” are. We aren’t as problematic as people think we are. Contrary to popular belief, being different is not a bad thing.
