Expanding Horizons: CJDS Teachers Lead the Way in Promoting Diversity in Jewish Understanding
October 2023
By Amber Franklin and Donna de Groot.
In an ever-evolving world that celebrates diversity, it is essential for young minds to grasp the intricacies of various cultures and beliefs. At the Charlotte Jewish Day School (CJDS), educators have recognized the need to transcend narrow stereotypes and foster a more inclusive understanding of Jewry around the world. This transformative journey began when we (Amber Franklin, a 3rd-grade teacher, and Donna de Groot, a 1st-grade Judaica teacher), embarked on a remarkable expedition to the 10th Cohort of the Teacher Institute for Innovation, hosted by The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Mount Scopus, in July 2023. CJDS is excited to be a grant recipient for this entire program from a national philanthropic foundation.
Our venture was not only a personal milestone but a vital step toward broadening the perspectives of our students. During the two-week immersion, we delved into the heart of innovation and education, reaping inspiration from outstanding professors and experts. The learning wasn’t confined to lecture halls; we explored museums and historical sites that have shaped the tapestry of Israel’s rich heritage.
The experience was not just about acquiring knowledge; it was about reimagining education and channeling fresh ideas into pedagogical practices. With newfound enthusiasm, we wanted to address the challenge of students’ limited perception of Jewish diversity head-on. A homogeneous viewpoint often characterizes students’ understanding of what it means to be Jewish, a notion that we were determined to reshape.
The outcome of our educational odyssey was an innovative schoolwide project designed to introduce CJDS students to the kaleidoscope of world Jewry. Recognizing the potential to foster cultural awareness, empathy, and a broader outlook, the project aims to dismantle stereotypes and promote a deep appreciation for the multiplicity of Jewish identities.
The cornerstone of the endeavor lies in offering students an authentic and immersive experience. No longer confined to textbooks, students will embark on a journey of discovery through research and engaging interviews. The spotlight will be on Jews who have migrated to Israel from various countries. By listening to their stories, students will traverse the landscapes of the Jewish diaspora, encountering diverse traditions, struggles, and triumphs from different countries and continents. The students will also look at their own family history and track their origin. This exploration will encourage them to ponder and challenge their existing assumptions, paving the way for a more profound comprehension of what it truly means to be Jewish.
To bridge the gap between theory and practice, we have crafted a curriculum that nurtures inclusivity and embraces differences across all grades. By weaving together stories, histories, and experiences, we hope to forge a sense of unity amidst diversity. Our vision is one of a connected and inclusive Jewish community, where students foster connections across cultural divides and embrace the beautiful mosaic that defines our world.
Beyond merely reshaping student perspectives, this project underscores the evolving role of educators as catalysts for change. Our journey serves as an inspiring example of the transformative power of learning and innovation. The lessons we absorbed from The Hebrew University’s expert faculty, the dynamic energy of Jerusalem’s historic sites, and the vibrancy of Israel’s culture will undoubtedly radiate through all classrooms. In a world that is embracing diversity as a strength, CJDS is paving the way forward. By challenging young minds to think beyond the surface, we hope to contribute to a global shift toward understanding, acceptance, and unity. Through the dedication, innovation, and passion, of our teachers and our school, we are crafting a more inclusive world, one student at a time.
