Listening for Old Tom Turkey Spring turkey hunting is one of the most exhilarating experiences found in life! When the conditions are just right Old Tom Turkey can be called right up to the decoys then dispatched for the dinner table with relative ease. However, the weather is always a consideration in determining the hunter’s success afield, especially the wind factor. This morning while on Bear Mountain located in Waleska, Georgia, as the day began to break, the north winds breezed down the Salacoa Valley then up and across the Northside of the mountain, a primary draw where it then circulated intermittently into every one of my special hunting spots. After attempting several stalks over a one hour period it was time to head back to the Landcrusier. Old Tom Turkey could probably hear me walking through the woods trying to establish communication, but I could not hear him. The noise from the brisling of the trees and my occasionally movement favored the hunted rather than the hunter. As I sat there in the vehicle with the tree tops waving in the wind I believe that God allowed me to catch a glimpse into the wisdom displayed by his creative hand through the wind, likened in scripture to the movement of His Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit circulates all around us each day leading us to our Heavenly Father as we follow Jesus wherever he calls us to go. Not to over spiritualize the morning hunt when I got skunked with no birds on the ground, but the experience reminded me that sometimes I get confused and off course in life because my hearing has become obstructed by the constant chatter of our secular culture. Even familiar noises can be deceptive and obstruct our spiritual hearing. This morning my hearing might have been obstructed but I know based on many

years of hunting on this mountain that the Eastern Gobblers are out there, somewhere! As followers of Jesus Christ who are led daily by the third person of the triune Godhead, namely the Holy Spirit, we can rest assured that God not only hears our prayers when we call to him but also has our best interest at heart. As we dialogue with the Lord in daily conversation laying our requests before Him then waiting in eager expectation, he always hears us even though we may not hear His response. God reveals His character and personality to us as we exercise faith in His promises while learning patience, trust and obedience. Its called the Mystery of God’s Kingdom! Hopefully, you will hear God’s voice clearly in this edition of The Christian Sportsman through our dedicated TEAM CSF Contributing Writers who are following His Holy Spirit by bringing to you our readers great inspiration and encouragement as you walk with Jesus Christ in the coolness of the day! The cover story features Pat Robertson of CBN’s “700 Club” television show. Sometimes controversial, this great hero in the faith continues to be used mightily by the Lord by bringing innovation in presenting the gospel to the nations of the world. Those who honor me I will honor, but those who despise me will be disdained. 1 Samuel 2:30 HCSB Recently, staff writers for The Christian Sportsman caught up with Pat Robertson of the Christian Broadcasting Network for a personal interview about his life and legacy as one of our nation’s foremost leaders in Christian media, higher education and mission relief around the world. Also noteworthy is the fact that his father, Sen. A. Willis Robertson of Virginia, authored the PittmanRobertson Wildlife Restoration Act of 1937, the centerpiece legislation which is highly esteemed by outdoors conservation organizations across the nation. Pat Robertson has been a change-agent throughout his career and brings great insights through stories from this intriguing interview. 1. It has been said that you have a passion for the great outdoors, especially related to caring for and riding horses. Could you share with our readers insights about your outdoor passions and the conservation management of our natural resources? My father kept hunting dogs before I was born, so it was natural for me to grow up knowing and loving these wonderful animals. Our specialty was short-haired pointers. I remember when I was eight or nine, we entered our pet dog Alex in a local field trial. He was so quick in locating coveys of birds

that we won first place. The prize was a lamp with a shade on which was painted the speed of game birds in miles per hour. We put the lamp in a place where I did most of my reading, so every day I was treated to the speed of grouse, pheasants, quail, mallard ducks, wild turkeys, etc. Since those days, I’ve also enjoyed working with dogs and training them. I worked on a cousin’s large farm near Culpepper, Virginia when I was thirteen. After our work in the field was over, the sharecropper’s son and I mounted horses to ride on a dirt road up to a little country store where it was possible to buy a quart of ice cream for ten cents and a bottle of soda pop for five cents. Then we would gallop the horses back to the barn. I’ve been riding now for seventy years. I’ve owned and trained warm-bloods, thoroughbred jumpers, and dressage horses. My latest acquisition is a 17.3 hand Lusitano which had come from Portugal. He is eleven years old and has been trained at fourth level dressage. I try to ride at least five days a week, weather permitting, and must say that my bond with this animal is extraordinary. In the past, I have loved hiking, camping, trail riding, and everything associated with the out-of-doors. God gave us a wonderful world to

enjoy and I believe in enjoying it to the fullest while ensuring that the forests are intact, that the air is pure, that the rivers and lakes are pristine, and that the wildlife is protected and plentiful. 2. Tell us about your family and God’s blessings on the Robertson home over the years? And can you comment on the importance of the father/son relationship? I am blessed to have a proud heritage which includes a couple of presidents and members of the pioneering families of our nation. My father served in the United States Congress and the Senate for some thirtyfour years. Before that, he was a State Senator, a Commonwealth Attorney, and the State Commissioner of Inland and Game Fisheries. From that family comes a profound sense of right and wrong, and a call for service. In a family like mine, it was just expected that the sons were to be public servants or servants of God. My father always had a keen sense of responsibility, and over and over we were reminded of the duty he owed to his constituents. I was born in the Great Depression when families were small. I always wanted a large family, and my wife and I were blessed with four wonderful children…two boys and two girls…and now we

have fourteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Early on, I claimed the wonderful promise found in the book of the Prophet Isaiah… “Your children shall be taught of the Lord.” My role was to live before them the life of a Christian man and to teach them the precepts of holy and Godly living. More than anything, however, I tried to have them grow up to be dependent on the Lord and to know that, indeed, He would teach them. I am pleased to say that all of my children and all of my grandchildren and all of their spouses are all wonderful, dedicated Christian people. 3. Describe your personal experience in committing your life to Jesus Christ? How does God continue to demonstrate himself as your Savior and Lord 57 years later? What prayer concerns are now on your heart and mind? Even as a young man I sensed the call of God in my life. But I had not surrendered to Him. I remember praying at an early age, and feeling a closeness to God. Later in my college experience, I felt a longing for something better, but it was not until I was in business in New York that I began to sense an emptiness that money and business relations were not able to fill. I met with a friend of my mother’s over dinner at a lovely hotel restaurant in Philadelphia and there, when pressed, finally blurted out, “I believe that Jesus Christ died for the sins of the whole world and for my sins too.” It was

then something like a light went on inside of me, and I had understanding of life and the great issues confronting mankind. In truth, the goal of life was to know Jesus Christ and to receive Him as both Lord and Savior. Since that moment, I have walked into a whole new dimension of life. The Bible says, “Those who are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God.” I have had the leading of the Spirit to enter a television ministry, buy a television station, grow the station into a network, take the network around the world, begin a university, take a cable network public on the New York Stock Exchange, and enter into a host of challenging ventures, such as a run for the presidency of the United States. I believe that when Shakespeare wrote, “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players,” he was describing my experience. The world is a stage, but we have an audience of one—the Lord God. The prayer that I would have is that I would live a life that is worthy of His calling and be given His wisdom as I walk along the way. 4. As a businessman and entrepreneur, how did your career launch then subsequently focus on Christian media and higher education? When I graduated from law school, my specialty was in federal taxation and business. I was offered a job as an executive trainee at the international firm of

W.R. Grace and Company. I worked for a time under the Vice President of International Manufacturing. I had in my heart an entrepreneurial desire and left the position with Grace to join with a couple of friends from law school to form a small company to exploit a unique patent that covered an electrostatic loudspeaker which had remarkable fidelity in the high-frequency range. It was while trying to get this small company up and running that I sensed the call of God in my life and surrendered my life to God’s service. The full story of what happened next is covered in my book, Shout It From The Housetops. 5. What were some of the greatest milestones in launching Christian Broadcasting Network and other enterprises associated with it? In 1965, we held a fundraising telethon. I needed 700 people who would pledge $10.00/ month to make our very modest budget. Prior to this time, we had only had about 330 people and we were chronically short of money. On this particular weekend, a miracle happened. God’s sovereign power moved in and people called to say that they were being awakened from a sound sleep by the Lord and that they could not sleep until they called and made a pledge. We exceeded our goal for the first time in a number of years and then, after several days, opened our telephones to praying for those in the

audience who had physical needs. An amazing sense of God’s presence swept not only our studio, but our entire community. Miracle after miracle began to take place and we were overwhelmed by what had happened. Nevertheless, the time for that particular program had passed and we went back to our regular programs. A year later, we had the same results—an abundance of financial provision and miraculous answers to prayer. Sometime after that, we decided that what we had witnessed was so wonderful that it would be appropriate to have a program on a regular basis where we prayed for the needs of our audience. The telethon had been called “The 700 Club,” symbolizing the 700 people we wanted to pledge. Since 700 Club sounded like the popular James Bond 007 and the idea of some kind of a club, we decided to call the program The 700 Club. That concept was given by God himself, and since then it has revolutionized television around the world. In our studio in Virginia Beach, we have received close to 90 million telephone calls asking for prayer and counseling, and around the world tens of millions of people have received Jesus as their Savior because of this simple

concept birthed by the Lord Himself. 6. Who were your mentors and other influential leaders who inspired you to start CBN and its related organizations? In my reading and study, I was enormously impressed by John Wesley. I have in my library a multi-volume collection of his sermons. I also have a book on his journal. In addition to Wesley, I believe the writings of a man named Norman Grubb, son-in-law of the famous C.T. Studd who founded WEC International. Grubb was a seminal thinker whose book, Touching the Invisible, was a powerful introduction into the life and the spirit. I was deeply impressed by the autobiography of the great evangelist, Charles Finney, and the writings of D.L. Moody, R.A. Torrey, and others of the great men of God of past centuries. These men wrote and spoke of living a life dedicated to Jesus, but I believe the entrance into the world of broadcasting had to come from the Lord. 7. Reflecting back on your personal life and specific calling what breakthroughs provided confirmation that you were following God’s will in establishing CBN? There have been many

signposts along the way in my work. In the early days, the most notable came at a time when the tiny organization I founded had run out of money and was $15,000 in debt. I thought it was time to give up the struggle. But on the evening of the day that I had set for drastic action, my dear friend and Presbyterian minister, Paul Morris, felt led of God to travel from New York to Virginia where he sat in my living room and wrote out a check for $8,000 which lifted the initial burden and gave me a whole new lease on what God had planned. 8. Who is the most important person in your life and why? Without question, the most important person in my life is Jesus Christ. He is the author and finisher of my faith. There is no one else that even comes close. I must say that my wonderful mother, Gladys Churchill Willis Robertson, was a tower of spiritual strength and one who would not stop praying until her son had given his heart to the Lord Jesus Christ. 9. Share with our readers your perspective regarding military service as a U.S. Marine and the foundational life lessons learned from the experience? While I was in college, I enrolled in the Platoon

Leaders Program with the United States Marine Corp and served a couple of summers at Quantico. When I graduated from college in 1950, I was given the rank of Lieutenant in the Marine Corp. In the fall of that same year, I was called to active duty, went through the first basic school for Marine Corp officers at Quantico, Virginia, and shortly thereafter was shipped out to the Far East—first in Japan where I was training troops who were recovering from combat wounds inflicted in Korea, and then on to join the Headquarters Battalion of the 1st Marine Corp Division stationed north of the 38th parallel in Korea. In the Marines, I learned discipline, a pride in esprit décor of the Marine Corp, and the pride that comes from being part of an elite military unit. In the Marines, a

person learns to obey orders without questioning and, as an officer, to give orders to those down the line. The military is the best training ground for business management that I know anything about, and I am very grateful for the couple of years’ experience. 10. Who are some of your heroes over the span of your life and career? Biblical heroes? I was born in Lexington, Virginia in a hospital that had once been the home of famed Civil War General, Stonewall Jackson; I went to college at a university where Robert E. Lee had served as president; and the original grant to the college had come from George Washington. So I was surrounded at an early age by the memory of great American heroes. While I served in Japan, the

commanding general was Douglas MacArthur who, again, was a towering military genius. My home was only seventy miles away from the home of Thomas Jefferson whose words inspire me: “I have sworn on the altar of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man.” In short, my early years were steeped in the traditions of freedom, liberty, and noble service. But none of these leaders can compare to those who truly have shaped my thoughts— the Lord Jesus Christ who is God and man; the Apostle Paul whose writings have shaped Christianity as we know it; and David, a man after God’s own heart. Abraham, who against hope, believed in hope, and whose faith God counted as

righteousness. Moses who saw God face-to-face on the mountain and brought forth the greatest collection of law ever compiled. These men and others like them are not just my heroes but my everyday companions and those who truly shape the way I think. 11. What role do you believe sportsmen had in establishing this great nation and what is their role today as conservationists? Tell us about your father, A. Willis Robertson, and his specific role in co-authoring the Pittman-Robertson Wildlife Restoration Act of 1937? My father, A. Willis Robertson, was an avid sportsman. He loved to hunt and fish, and would walk for hours over the mountains and valleys of his native Virginia. It was his contention that no dictator in the history of the world was someone who loved hunting and fishing. He served for a time as Virginia’s Commissioner of Game and Inland Fisheries. In that role, he gained a thorough knowledge of the working of governmental conservation of our natural heritage. After he was elected to Congress in 1932, he gained a seat on the powerful tax-writing Ways and Means Committee. As a Congressman, he always took time to hunt and fish, yet he realized that unless something was done to ensure their stability, the numbers of game birds would rapidly decline. So he devised an extraordinarily ingenious plan to supply funding for wildlife

habitat to protect the fish and game. He proposed a simple tax on each box of ammunition sold in the country. Realizing the propensity of his congressional colleagues to spend money whenever it was available, he put into his law the ironclad provision that funds from this special tax on ammunition only be set-aside for use in promoting the health and well-being of migratory game birds and other forms of wildlife. Because of his wisdom, what was called the Pittman–Robertson Wildlife Restoration Act of 1937 has resulted in billions of dollars being used to enhance the habitat of migratory game birds as well as other forms of wildlife. Now, instead of a diminishing supply of this precious resource, the fields and forests and streams are abounding in game of all sorts and will continue to do so because of the foresight of my esteemed father. Since the inception of the Pittman-Robertson Wildlife Restoration program, the Fish & Wildlife Services website reports that the manufacturers’ excise taxes and required matching state funds now total the impressive sum of $8.93 billion. 12. Why is the 2nd Amendment support of firearm ownership so vital to the future of the United States and how is it closely related to the 1st Amendment which guarantees free speech? The founders of our country realized that dictatorship

flourished over a supine populace which lacked the weapons to resist tyranny. The founders also believed that the citizen militia would be our best defense against foreign aggression. Therefore, they insisted in their Bill of Rights the 2nd Amendment that the right of the people to carry arms shall not be abridged. Although I am not a fan of some of the crazed militia groups, or the “end of the world preppers,” I do believe that the existence of 300 million personally held firearms in the United States would prove a powerful bulwark to our freedom and a deterrent to any future group of plotters who might attempt to take over the government by force. I also am convinced that those communities in which peaceful citizens are armed have the lowest incidents of crime. If peace-loving people had been armed during some of the hideous massacres that have occurred over the past several years, I believe that the results would have been much different and the number of casualties would have been drastically diminished. As an aside, I was qualified as an expert with the Browning automatic rifle, a marksman with the M1 carbine, have trained with both the Smith & Weston 38 caliber revolver and the Glock 9mm automatic, and I also have a Beretta 20 gauge shotgun with which I enjoy occasional skeet shooting.

13. Reflecting back on CBNâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ministry over the years, what achievements have had the greatest Kingdom impact and why? The statistics of our years of ministry are nothing short of staggering. Our Prayer Center in the United States has received an estimated 93 million calls since we started keeping records of people. Around the world, we worked in 62 different languages (broadcasting in 37), and our programs touched over 200 nations and territories. Since the fall of Communism, we have seen some 600 million people who have given their hearts to Jesus Christ because of programs that we have broadcast. Throughout Asia, Africa, South America, and other parts of the world, the lives changed will be the greatest impact in the

Kingdom of God. 14. In 2006, CSF awarded you the David Livingstone Award during the NSSF Shot Show for best exemplifying the life work of the medical missionary and African explorer whose name the award bears. Tell us briefly about Operation Blessing and the Flying Hospital and their role in delivering medical and food relief to countries on the African continent? I was honored in 2006 to receive the David Livingstone Award. Several years ago, I was privileged to go to Zambia and travel to the town of Livingstone near the Zambezi River just up from the spectacular Victoria Falls on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia. Some years ago when I was praying and reading

the Bible, I came across the 58th chapter of the book of the Prophet Isaiah where we are commanded to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and give shelter to the homeless. On the strength of that, I founded Operation Blessing International which has grown dramatically over the decades. We now distribute almost 100 million pounds of food and supplies to the inner cities of America every year, have performed 20,791 medical missions over the years, and have drilled 13,885 water wells that serve fresh water to 5,512,467 people. In Latin America, we have distributed millions of doses of medicine which knocks out intestinal parasites in small children. Operation Blessing has been privileged to train people to gain useful employment and to help poor

men and women start little micro enterprise businesses. Although it’s difficult to even contemplate rising to the level of sacrifice that personified David Livingstone, it is a thrill to be able to bless the nations of the world.

15. In 1988, during your bid for the U.S. Presidency, how did the Christian Coalition influence America’s future then and what is the sustained influence in 2014?

Christian Coalition members, or those supported by them, were elected to a number of very important offices in the nation. More than anything, my campaign and the work of the Christian Coalition and its successors have shown Christians that they need to be involved in the public debate in our nation, and that they now have the skill to take important positions in political parties and to be elected to public office from district attorney to state legislatures to Congress and beyond.

After the 1988 presidential election, I was completely exhausted from my efforts as a candidate. I wanted to get out of politics, but one of my state directors said, “Pat, you have organized hundreds of thousands into the political process and have spent millions of dollars in your effort. If you get out now, all that you have accomplished will be lost.” So, on the strength of that, I decided to start an organization that would give Christian people a voice in the political councils of the nation, and so I founded the Christian Coalition. I had a very enthusiastic list of people who had assisted in my campaign. The Christian Coalition was started with a modest contribution from me, the campaign mailing list, and several dedicated people, including a bright young man named Ralph Reed who I had asked to be the executive director. The Christian Coalition burst like a dry prairie lit by a match. It quickly became one of the most effective lobbying groups in the nation, and in state-after-state the Christian Coalition members attained significant positions in the

The distortion has been rather profound and somewhat hurtful, but somehow in the goodness of the Lord, the truth of the Lord has come through despite deliberate mischaracterization of people who are opposed to conservative Judeo-Christian values.

2014 got off to an AWESOME start. Christmas had been what Christmas always is…a highlight of the year. And the best present was not wrapped in a box with foil paper and a red bow. It came in living color—as our son Bryan returned home from a tour in Afghanistan.

Now January had come and deer season was still on in Texas. I boarded a plane in Atlanta to meet some new and old friends in the great state whose proud residents believe it isn’t simply a state, but a country! The flight to San Antonio took me to the edge of the fabled Hill Country to meet up with two great friends, and then an SUV carried us faithfully to the ranch where our adventure waited some four hours away.

The morning was cold and crisp, the sky clear and every hunter primed to pull the trigger. We were briefed on the ranch’s safety rules, asked for any questions and launched out paired with our guides ready for “the BIG one” to step out and give us a shot.

As we settled into the bunking quarters, we were breathing the air of anticipation. Smiles filled every face, laughter was infectious, voices rose with anticipation and we chowed

The first morning found every hunter out of his bed, dressed, some food in his stomach and eagerly waiting for the guides to walk in and get the hunt on! It was game time and we were ready for game on!!

My guide, David, was a great guy. He knew the ranch, was familiar with the patterns the deer had been moving in, and personified patience as though he were the poster boy for the trait. In the chilly darkness, we launched out into the predawn blackness and I was convinced this was going to be “the day.” I was after a deer that would be the biggest I

had ever taken and convinced today would be my lucky day. But the day came and went without any chance of a shot at a good deer. But one of our group came back with a smile as big as Texas, telling the story of the deer that he had taken. A beauty! And that was just the beginning. In the first three days of our hunt, EVERYBODY got a great deer…and my great friend George had gotten not one buck, but TWO! Sometimes life just isn’t fair!! So the last day had arrived, and we didn’t even have a whole morning…only had a portion of it. Everybody had their deer, except yours truly—the seeming “remedial hunter” of the group. My new friend and ranch owner Gary Schwarz, sent me and my guide David to one site while he struck out to another stand where a big deer had been spotted a few days before our arrival. We would keep in touch by texts, and Gary

instructed, “If I see something and let you know, come running.” As David and I settled in our blind and dawn crept over the eastern horizon, deer began to materialize out of the fog. I raised my gun to position, strained to see through mist, and imagined my trophy stepping out and me taking a big breath, letting it out slowly and steadily squeezing the trigger. But every deer that appeared wasn’t the shooter for which I had been waiting… and waiting. That’s when the phone vibrated. Gary had spotted a big deer across the ranch. He encouraged us to hop out of our blind, jump in our 4-wheeler and high-tail it to where he was positioned. But David hesitated regarding easing out of our blind and busting the deer in front of us. It didn’t take me long to realize “a bird in the hand, is worth two in the bush” and out of the blind I ran for the ATV. Jumping on it we drove like wild men across the ranch in the dawning light hoping and praying the deer Gary had spotted wouldn’t bust and run.

Squealing to a stop, I sprinted to where Gary was crouching behind a stand. The bruiser was 178 yards away. I would have to ease into the tripod chair following Gary’s commands as he watched the buck with eagle eyes. Take a step…freeze…another… freeze…move now…stop— and so it went until after what seemed like an eternity I slipped into the seat, lifted my rifle into position, took a deep breath…and heard the gravel crunch from the truck! Oh no!! An oil truck was moving down a ranch road behind us and the buck was at attention, already leaning toward bursting toward the brush where he would disappear into the morning never to be seen again. But this trophy wasn’t going to get away. I took another deep breath, sighted through my new Trijicon 3-9x40 illuminated reticle scope on my Kimber .300 short Win Mag and squeezed the trigger. The explosive shot broke the morning and in that heart-stopping micro second I sat with glued vision on the buck…and watched the monster buck drop in his

tracks!! The greatest whitetail trophy of my life…on the last day, the last hour, the last chance. I was thrilled ecstatic with my buck, but reminded of a critical life principle IT’S NEVER TO LATE! It’s never too late to risk. It’s never too late to change It’s never too late to break a habit. It’s never too late to repair a ruptured relationship. It’s never too late to ask for, or grant forgiveness. It’s never too late to surrender to Christ as Savior and Lord. So, while I was blessed to get a trophy buck it is far more important to become a trophy of grace, regardless of what it may seem. So…what are you waiting for?! FISHING BUDDIES by Joy and Bryan Greene

Something special occurs every Sunday morning at Englewood Baptist Church in Jackson, TN…Special Buddies. Special Buddies is a ministry that reaches out to special needs children and their families. This ministry began in 2008 when God led two families to Englewood, the Guilarans and the Hardins. Both of these families were new to Englewood and both had a passion for kids with special needs.

At that time, the Guilarans had adopted a little boy who was deaf and autistic, and they were looking for a church family that would welcome their son. At this same time, Sandy Hardin, who had been a special education teacher for 34 years, was interested in organizing a new program at their church in order to reach the special needs community. As the Guilarans and the Hardins met to pray over this new idea, God began to show them His plan.

Over the years, Special Buddies has grown tremendously as the church now serves 21 families through their special needs programs. There are two Special Buddies Sunday school classrooms each week, offered at 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Sandy is the coordinator of the special needs program where they have over 30 volunteers who work with the children on a rotating basis. Sandy says, “We are so blessed to have volunteers who are licensed or certified in the areas

of speech therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, special education, assistive technology and health care.” One of Sandy’s goals is to provide opportunities for families to come together and have fun, and so every few months she organizes a fellowship for these special families. One of the Special Buddies volunteers, Bryan Greene, is an avid fisherman and is a member of the local Bass Fishing club (Madison County Bass Anglers) in Jackson. His heart’s desire was to organize a Special Buddies Fishing Tournament for these families and to utilize the small lake full of crappie and bass behind his house. Bryan talked with his local bass club about the tournament and they were eager to help. Long time fishermen Mack Carter and Steve Brummet jumped in to help and were happy to donate prizes and attend the tournament in order to help the kids fish.

As families arrived at the Greene’s house, they were given a record sheet in order to keep up with the length and number of fish they caught. The families and volunteers enjoyed fishing together around the lake and the kids enjoyed the competition. There were prizes for the biggest fish, the smallest fish and the most fish caught. Thanks to Mr. Carter and Mr. Brummet, winners received rods, reels and tackle storage boxes. Over 75 people attended this special event which included a barbeque picnic that everyone enjoyed. At the end of the evening, a large campfire lit up the night sky while families and volunteers sang songs together. We are all created in the image of God and we each have a purpose in life. When reflecting on this event, Lesley Guilaran said: “Most families who have children with special needs never feel a sense of normalcy. The Special Buddies fellowship was amazing. Whenever we

attend gatherings, it’s always such a challenge because of our children’s extra challenges. But at this event, we were not the odd ones out because everyone at the gathering was the same! We were all parents of children with disabilities and have traveled a similar road, and we could share in that together while fishing, roasting marshmallows, and singing songs to Jesus. It was an absolutely beautiful time that we recall with tears of joy in our eyes.”

Responding to Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Call through Prayer Ken Boa

The God of the Bible is infinite, personal and triune. As a communion of three persons, one of God’s purposes in creating us is to display the glory of His being and attributes to intelligent moral creatures who are capable of responding to His relational initiatives. In spite of human rebellion and sin against the person and character of the Lord, Christ bore the awesome price of our guilt and inaugurated “a new and living way” (Hebrews 10:20) by which the barrier to personal relationships with God has been overcome. “By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins” (1 John 4:9-10) Since God is the initiator of a loving relationship with us, our high and holy calling is to respond to His offer. Our Lord, in encapsulating the Law and the Prophets, gave us the essence of His response: “You shall love the Lord your God with all of heart, and with all of your soul and with all of your mind’. This is the great and foremost commandment. The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:37-39). The quality of our vertical relationship with God has a direct bearing on the quality of our horizontal relationships with others. As we grow in His grace, we have an enhanced capacity, through the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit, to respond to others with Christlike qualities of

humility, gentleness, patience and forbearance (Ephesians 4:2). This agape, which we receive from the Lord and which flows through us toward others, is rooted in volition (our willingness to receive and display it) and is expressed through thinking and feeling in the deeds of other-centered love. Another way of responding to our calling and purpose as followers of Christ is to love God completely, to love ourselves correctly and to love others compassionately. Loving God completely is a growth process that involves the personal elements of communication and response. By listening to the Holy Spirit in the words of Scripture and speaking to the Lord in our thoughts and prayers, we move in the direction of knowing Him better. The better we know Him, the more we love Him, and the more we love Him, the greater our willingness to respond to Him in trust and obedience. To love ourselves correctly is to see ourselves as God sees us and allow the Word, not the world, to define us by telling us who and whose we are. The clearer we capture the vision of our new identity in Christ, the more we will realize that our deepest needs for security, significance, and satisfaction are met in Him and not in people, possessions and positions. A biblical view of our identify and resources in Christ moves us in the direction of loving others compassionately. Grasping our true and unlimited

resources in Christ frees us from bondage to the opinions of others and gives us the liberty to love and serve others regardless of their response. Since we cannot serve two masters, the focus of our heart will either be the temporal or the eternal. If it is the temporal, we cannot love God completely because of a divided heart. When Christ is a component instead of the center of life, things become complicated; the worries of the world, the deceitfulness of wealth, and the desires for other things choke the word of truth in our lives and we do not bear lasting fruit (Mark 4:19). It was a cold, snowy, and subzero night in Great Falls, but that did not deter 400 hardy Montana men, women and children from attending the Big Sky Chapter annual fundraising banquet. The event started with a silent auction, followed by a savory pulled pork dinner along with a wide variety of wild game. A live auction followed with lively bidding.

Steve’s childhood dream was to be a hunting guide, leading men to their trophies. God showed him that he indeed was a guide. First for his children leading them to the feet of Jesus and now he has 5 grandchildren to guide. (4 does and a buck)!

The evening featured two guest speakers. Rufus Luttig of HuntSA and Steve Chapman, singer, songwriter and author of several books, including “A Look At Life From A Deer Stand”. Rufus spoke after a compelling video showing how he uses hunting in South Africa to raise support for HIV/ Aids orphans and engages hunters to bring sustainable change and discipleship to the impoverished people.

Presently, he uses his passion to challenge men and women to “follow the blood” to the cross and to use the time in the woods to hear God’s voice as he speaks to our character. Steve handed down a challenge to be dressed right. Just as we use camouflage and warm clothing to be prepared for our hunt, we need to be dressed right for heaven. Are we acceptable? Have we put on our robe of righteousness? Steve closed his time with a call to come to Christ and read Jude vs. 24. “To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before His glorious presence without fault and with great joy!” (NIV) The event ended with prayer

Outdoor sports have the tendency to draw people of all backgrounds together. People from different cultures and socio-economic status with opposite personalities can instantly find a kinship with someone with this simple question: “Do you hunt or fish?” I have been at gatherings with total strangers, but as soon as I find someone who shares my love of the outdoors, I have found my BFFD (Best Friend For the Day). I have been at archery ranges, shooting with total strangers, but our mutual love of sticks and strings leads to a conversation, and within a few minutes we act as if we have known each other for years. A few weeks ago I met with the representative of an architectural and engineering company to discuss possible renovations for our church facilities. He saw the two sets of arrows I had robinhooded over my office door, which led to a conversation about hunting. Before he left we discussed stories from the past hunting season and I showed him my photo album of the animals I have killed over the years. Another example of this “instant kinship” was last summer when my wife and I walked across the street to meet our new neighbors. As soon as I walked in their door, my eye caught the nice 11-point buck hanging on the wall. At that point, my wife knew what the topic of conversation was going to be between me and this man I had never even met. Those of us who are active in the outdoors often call this kinship a “brotherhood.” It is a unique connection that we have with each other. It is a bond formed by our love of cool, crisp weather, early mornings on the lake, rutting bucks, and migrating waterfowl. Two hunting partners are no different than an old, married couple; they can spend time together, never hardly speak, and yet

know exactly what the other is thinking and feeling.

However, as followers of Christ, we need to be careful that we do not lose sight of the true brotherhood. As close and strong as the bond is between outdoorsmen, it does not compare to the brotherhood that exists through the blood of Jesus Christ. In the book of Ephesians, Paul was writing to Gentile believers who were struggling with whether or not they really belonged in God’s family, after all, Christianity had Jewish roots, and Jesus was a Jew. So could Gentiles really belong to the family of God? Paul reassured them that they could in Ephesians 2:12-14, “You were at that time separate from Christ, excluded from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who formerly were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For He Himself is our peace, who made both groups into one and broke down the barrier wall.“ (NASB) He goes on in verses 16-22 to say that through the blood of Christ, they (Jews and Gentiles) are one body, and are all part of God’s household, founded on Jesus Christ. This was radical teaching in Paul’s day. Racial tensions between Jews and Gentiles were parallel to what our country has experienced in years past (and unfortunately what some places still

experience today). When Paul says that in Christ the Jews and Gentiles are now one family, one race, one brotherhood, He speaks of the eternal and significant bond between those who have put their faith in Christ. This bond builds a bridge across race, status, and other factors that have typically divided people throughout history. I have been on two international mission trips in my life, one to China and the other to Belgium. On each trip I met other Christians with whom I previously had no contact, who came from very different cultures, whose governments were different from the United States, and who did not speak English as their native language (though many could speak English). Yet within just a few moments we could talk as if we had known each other for years, and had great love and affection for each other. How was this possible? We had been brought near to each other by the blood of Jesus. Let us never forget that our strongest bond is between those of us who share in the blood of Christ. This does not mean that we cannot enjoy our relationships with those who also enjoy the outdoors, but we must maintain the focus and perspective that we have the most in common with those who share with us in the gospel. And let us always be aware, as we enjoy the outdoors with others, that many of those with whom we enjoy time in the field do not yet know Christ. Let this motivate us to share the hope of Christ with them, so they too can join the brotherhood.

Weathering the Winds of Adversity “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation, and the rich in his humiliation, because like a flower of the grass he will pass away. For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. So also will the rich man fade away in the midst of his pursuits. Do you stew and fret, searching for solutions? Instead, realize that the presence of trials in your life reveals that God may be trying to get a message through to you. Maybe your tendency is to deny the facts, blame others, or simply sink into self-pity. TRUTHS ABOUT TRIALS Trials are experienced by everyone. “Do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.” (1 Peter 4:12)

Trials have a divine purpose. “We rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame.” (Romans 5:3–5)

Trials last only for a while. “In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials.” (1 Peter 1:6)

Trials are controlled by God. “God . . . will not let you be tempted beyond your ability.” (1 Corinthians 10:13)

Trials strengthen you in your weaknesses. “For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” (2 Corinthians 12:10)

Trials come with God’s grace for endurance. “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9)

Whitetail deer hunting has a powerful allure and much of the aura associated with it derives from an urgent quest of finding and shooting a trophy buck. Whitetail deer are highly accessible to almost anyone who shows an interest in hunting them; but finding and shooting a trophy buck can be as rare as the fabled needle in a haystack. For a buck to reach trophy status, many factors must come together. There are three elements that are essential: Age, genetics and nutrition. These three elements are present in large doses in trophy-rich states like Iowa, Ohio and Kansas due to successful game management. Deer hunters in other regions are now adapting to the principles and practices of what is known by many as Quality Deer Management. They are

attempting to manage as many of the variables as possible on their hunting properties so as to improve the quality of the habitat, deer herds and deer hunting experiences. This approach involves the protection of young bucks combined with an adequate harvest of does to maintain a healthy whitetail population, in balance with existing habitat conditions. There are many other factors that come into play when you attempt to take one of the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Kings of the Forest.â&#x20AC;? Deer have an incredible sense of smell, hearing and sight. To overcome their magnificent defense mechanisms, one must always factor in the wind, be quiet and restrict movement while utilizing cover for camouflage. A trophy hunter also factors in preferred food sources, water,

security cover, weather, stages of the rut, hunting pressure, deer travel patterns, entrance and exit trails when traveling to stands, and stand placement. When a hunter learns to adapt Big Picture thinking, his success rate soars as does the quality of his hunting experiences. Putting all of the pieces together is like a master-level, chess match that takes place in the wild. When you successfully align all the pieces and take a trophy buck, it is an incredible achievement that lives in ones memory bank for the rest of his life. After all, life is not about minutes but moments, and this moment lives for a lifetime. As much as I love to hunt, I realize that hunting is but one piece of the puzzle when looking at the Big Picture of Life. Through hunting, I have a front row seat on nature, and it

speaks forth much truth about life and death. My first hand observations of nature reinforce my belief in a higher power, which I believe to be the living God of Christianity. I believe in creation and enjoy my interactions with our amazing earth while pursuing wild game. I have interacted in a variety of habitats in America, Africa and Canada and have observed spectacular ecosystems that sustain a complex food chain. A single white oak tree in America will feed squirrels, turkeys, deer and other varmints, which in turn, draw in predators such as fox, coyotes, hawks, eagles and man. A water hole in Africa will blow your mind with the variety and number of game that will visit during any given day. The thick boreal forest of Canada and Alaska house bear and moose that display power through their sheer size and rough, isolated environments. When I walk in the dark towards my hunting stand, I am amazed at how many stars fill the sky, I then am even

more amazed when our own star rises each morning and displays its mighty self and often warms my cold body, knowing that if the sun were one degree closer or one degree farther away, then life here would not exist. I also see God’s power through inclement weather. Watching an ocean or one of the Great Lakes swell during a frightful storm or a mighty oak felled to the ground during high winds, speaks loudly of God’s powerful presence to those with eyes to see. Big Picture thinking gives me perspective, and I realize that the Creator of life communicates to us through His handiwork of nature, through His loving spirit and through His word; the Bible. Our time on earth is limited and can be measured like a single drop of water on a mighty ocean. God tells us in his book about life beyond earth and how we can acquire it. I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be

condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. John 5:24. Like the deer hunter who chooses to practice the principles of Quality Deer Management to enhance his hunting experiences, I realize that I can manage my life by practicing the principles of Christian living. By doing this, I will improve the quality of my life here on earth and then enjoy eternal life with the Creator. If you would like to explore God’s truth and reality further, read the Book of John found in the New Testament. If you would like eternal life with the Creator then pray to Jesus and ask Him to forgive your sins and receive and confess Him to be your personal Savior. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 Welcome to the brotherhood!

Getting the edge

As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another. Proverbs 27:17

I’m a knife guy. I love edged weapons. Some say I have too many but as I tell my Rangers; “A guy can have too many wives but never enough knives.” Before I get any responses wondering how many wives is too many; the answer is more than one. I completely support God’s plan of one man and one woman. The problem with knives is that after use they become dull. They need to be sharpened. Getting a good “edge” on a knife is a skill that doesn’t come easy. It takes time and practice. I’ve seen more than one fellow make his knife duller than sharper because he didn’t know what he was doing. This proverb speaks to the fact that we as humans need a sharp “edge” to be all that God has planned for us. That process is accomplished in relationship with other people. I have often heard preachers illustrate this process as two people

sharpening each other. That sounds good in theory but staying true to the proverb I believe it’s totally incorrect. When you need a good edge on your knife you don’t find another knife and then beat them together. You find the proper hone which isn’t a knife at all but usually a block or rod that is designed to remove steel from the knife’s edge and in doing so produce a razor edge. This proverb doesn’t refer to two peers bouncing ideas off one another although there is a place for that. I believe it much better illustrates the process of a mentor training someone. The mentor has the wisdom to know what has to be removed from his student in order to produce an “edge” that God can use. When you are looking for advice in life issues seek out someone who’s been there, done that (successfully) and got the t-shirt. Don’t look to

someone who is in the same place you are. However, for folks to get the “edge” there needs to be those who will serve as mentors. If you have been through the process of “sharpening” and have the record to prove it make yourself available to others. If you would be a mentor remember that knives are sharpened by slow careful removal of the extra material. It doesn’t happen overnight. In this world we live in the problems isn’t younger folks looking for mentors but a lack of mentors. Once you have gained an “edge” in life you are responsible to pass it on to others. Firearms Industry Economic Impact Nearly Doubles in Five Years NEWTOWN, Conn. – The total economic impact of the firearms and ammunition industry in the United States increased from $19.1 billion in 2008 to $37.7 billion in 2013, a 97 percent increase, while the total number of full-time equivalent jobs rose from more than 166,000 to more than 245,000, a 48 percent increase in that five-year period, according to a new report released today by the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the industry’s trade association. “We have seen dramatic, unprecedented during peacetime growth in the firearms and ammunition industry that is the direct result of consumer demand for our products in the last five years,” said Stephen L. Sanetti, NSSF president and chief executive officer. “While our nation’s overall economic recovery has been slow since 2008, our industry has been a true bright spot, increasing our direct workforce by nearly half, adding jobs that pay an average of more than $47,700 in wages and benefits. Supplier and induced jobs* were also increased by about half since 2008, even as we increased federal tax payments by 93 percent, Pittman-Robertson excise taxes that support wildlife conservation by 83 percent and state business taxes by 77 percent.” The Firearms and Ammunition Industry Economic Impact Report: 2013 provides a state by state breakdown of job numbers, wages and output covering direct, supplier and induced employment, as well as federal excise taxes paid. Nearly $1.1B Being Distributed for Conservation, Recreation Projects At NSSFâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s urging, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced this week that it will distribute nearly $1.1 billion in excise tax revenues paid by sportsmen and sportswomen to state fish and wildlife agencies to fund wildlife conservation and recreation projects across the nation. The funds are apportioned through the Pittman-Robertson Wildlife Restoration and Dingell-Johnson Sport Fish Restoration programs. Revenues come from excise taxes generated by the sale of sporting firearms, ammunition, archery equipment, fishing equipment and tackle, and electric outboard motor, as well as through fuel taxes on motorboats and small engines. Total distributions this year are $238.4 million higher than last year because of the inclusion of funds not distributed last year because of the government sequester and an increase in excise tax receipts from sales of firearms and ammunition in the Wildlife Restoration Trust Fund.
