This term, our year 7 students have been studying Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. They explored the text in class, delving into its characters and key themes, before taking on the challenge of rehearsing a scene from the play. They then had the opportunity to showcase their hard work by performing these scenes for their peers and parents. The event was a testament to their dedication and achievement. The impressive set designs and creative props added a special touch, playing a key role in making the performance such a success.
The City Academy Hackney has had a fantastic term, with lots of valuable learning experiences and exciting opportunities. We are incredibly proud of our students, who have work hard, show kindness and consideration to each other and who consistently uphold our academy values, inside and outside the classroom.
We wish everyone a joyful and restful holiday season, and a happy and prosperous New Year!

BlackHistory Month
To celebrate this year’s Black History Month, our students took part in a range of activities, including student-led assemblies, workshops, and special sessions during and after school. The celebration ended with an amazing performance based on this year’s theme, Reclaiming the Narrative. The event featured music, spoken word and theatre, with a standout piece from Year 12 Performing Arts students exploring identity and prejudice. Well done to all the students involved, and a big thank you to the staff who helped make it such a success.
Founders’ Day
Founders' Day is a special occasion where we celebrate the opening of our academy and honour the achievements of students who excelled in their 2024 GCSE exams. This year we were joined by special guests, including Catherine McGuinness CBE, Chair of the Trust Governing Board; David Chalk, Sheriff of the City of London; Timothy Sanders-Hewett, Master Fletcher of The Worshipful Company of Fletchers; and actor Tyreke Leslie, a former Guildhall School of Music and Drama student.
Alumni also returned to celebrate their peers, enjoy inspiring speeches, and watch beautiful performances from The City Academy Hackney choir and musicians. The event ended with a heartfelt rendition of our school song, with alumni joining the choir on stage for a truly unforgettable moment.
Financial Times -AfricaSummit
We are proud to share that Year 12 student Emmanuel Adu was selected by the Financial Times to attend their prestigious Africa Summit. Emmanuel described the event as an incredible experience where he had the chance to engage with world leaders, African government officials, and CEOs and CFOs from global companies like American Express and JP Morgan. He reflected, “It was an amazing event where I got to listen to and speak with influential figures. It gave me a deeper understanding of how what we learn in economics connects to real life and how business and economics are used in practice.” It’s inspiring to see our students, like Emmanuel, putting in the hard work both inside and outside the classroom.
TheCity BakeOff
The City Bake Off 2024 brought excitement, fierce competition and huge creativity to the academy on Monday 18th November Students battled it out for the title and teachers, supported by the KS4 Student Leaders, took on the very difficult job of deciding the winners (though there were some perks to this as the cakes were all delicious!) Congratulations to all participants After much deliberation, prozes were awarded as follows:
First Place: Neriah Nembhard & Sarha Jowaid
Second Place: Ancilla Macowvic, Gabriella Akponine & Ugo Egbeonu
 Third Place: Fayokemi Oluwasegun
LordMayor's Banquet2024
The Lord Mayor's Banquet, is an annual event to celebrate the start of the Lord Mayor's term. It brings together government officials, business leaders and City of London councillors for an evening of fine dining and speeches. John Lucas Collins Fay and Ethan Marsh, our 2023-24 Student Leaders, were given the opportunity to attend this prestigious event. They enjoyed the delicious food, met a diverse group of students from City of London schools and even had a chat witht the Prime Minister. During their conversation, John Lucas requested some work experience at the PM’s Office and was assured that it could be arranged. We’re going to hold you to that Sir Keir! It was a memorable evening for all and a testament to the exciting opportunities available to our students.
Musical Recital
The autumn music recital is an opportunity for younger and less experienced students to perform in front of an audience and show case their talents in a relaxed and supportive environment THis year, there were some great performances including a spectacular solo piano piece by Ebeneezer (Year 8), a moving Bob Dylan cover by Victor (Year 9), and a show-stopping rendition of A Change Is Gonna Come by Haleeb (Year 7)
