Dear readers, This issue is very special to us, celebrating the national holidays. May our beloved Kuwait always be prosperous and happy, and may we all have it in us to give back to our country. We have several interesting articles in this issue, some highlighting the work of volunteer groups. We admire their great work and their passion, and we have made it part of our plan to feature the works of volunteer groups in our magazine regularly. We also have some reviews of small businesses and projects that are interesting, and honestly it’s something to be proud of when seeing how people are working hard on achieving their dreams and ambitions. Enjoy the national holidays vacation, and be safe.

At Zain we share a sense of belonging

Leading Telco Provides Attractive Laid Back Yet Professional Atmosphere I work as a Corporate Social Responsibility Coordinator at Zain. I joined Zain back in 2008 as a part-timer in the Future University Network (FUN) program, part of Zain’s CSR programs targeted towards the youth. The main aim of the program is to bridge the gap between actual work experience and the university experience. Which is exactly what I found at Zain. Having to have to work in separate fields from marketing, sales, PR, Media, CSR, truly enriches a students work experience and exposes them to the main facets of an organization. The experience provided at Zain is truly a life changer. Hosting 40 nationalities and employing over 1200 employees, an individual is exposed to a lot of different personalities and cultures. My experience at Zain has taught me a lot on effective ways of communicating with people from different backgrounds.

A Wonderful World

Abdullah Al Zanki

During my years at university, I had the pleasure of working with 3 different, respectable organizations (Zain included), and Zain by far stands out to be the one where I can see myself develop on a professional, and personal level. Zain’s three values, which are “Radiance, Heart, and Belonging”, are evident throughout the organization and a family environment is what you’ll instantly recognize at Zain. We promote a professional, yet somewhat, casual environment. I’d like to invite all the youth from universities to apply to the FUN Program, as they would benefit from the experience that they attain from the program. Students entering the program will learn from direct hands-on experience, and gain a variety of skills that can direct students to a potential, prospering career path at Zain, or at other respectable organizations locally, and globally.

Where is Dear readers,

Love?

I am so happy to meet with you once again this month. February is an amazing month, especially here in Kuwait, where it is filled with love both with Valentine’s day on the 14th and National and Liberation day on the 25th and 26th. In actuality, there are so many kinds of love but, I know, many of you are looking for that special someone to live happily ever after with, just like the movies, right? If Cinderella found her Prince Charming, why not you, right? The quest to find love has filled books, movies, songs, and millions of hours of discussion. So, if you are one those people who want love or want to increase the love in your life, you are definitely not alone, so that can be a load off. So, how does one find love and, once found, hold on to it? This question has plagued relationships for years, but today I’d like to put a new spin on it. Ladies, if I may, I would like to talk with you. Did you know that finding love starts with loving yourself? You MUST love yourself and have a life that you love. In actuality, you must love yourself more that you love anyone else. You cannot love anyone more than you love yourself and expect to have a balanced, solid relationship. It just doesn’t work that way. The sad truth is, no one can love you more than you love yourself. So, if we were to quantify how much you love yourself on a scale of one to ten, ten being the most: If you love yourself 7/10 that means that your special someone can love you only a maximum of 6/10. The love you give yourself places the ceiling on the love you will receive. The more you love yourself, the more you will allow love to enter your life and, if you restrict that amount of love, it will affect you negatively. A question that may arise is: How do I love myself? Take a look at your life and the activities you are a part of. What are you spending your life on? Spending every spare second attached to your phone waiting for his message or his call is a horrible way to spend your time. Waiting, feeling sorry for yourself and resenting him is not the way to a healthy relationship. Get up! Go join a gym, join a club, join a class, join anything and enjoy your life. Do not allow him to become the center of your life and the one and only point of happiness for you. Meet different people, get a large variety of experiences, and enjoy your life. Please understand that you must be a complete person and not part of him. The phrase “You Complete Me.” is incorrect. So this means you are able to be happy without him. You must not depend on him for your happiness. Believe it or not, he is only responsible for 10% of your happiness and you are responsible for the remaining 90%. So that means, even if he is not there, you are still very happy. Find the calm within you. The most important relationship you will ever have is the one you have with yourself. Be nice to yourself. Love yourself. Don’t allow yourself to treat yourself badly. Remember, we are all trying to be the best we can be, give yourself a break. The most powerful words that determine our self worth are “I am”. Take a moment to notice the words that you choose to follow. If you say “I am not good enough” what do you expect the world to think? What you believe about yourself will affect the world’s perception of you. Why would you choose to label yourself anything less than amazing? Why, when the world is a wonderful place full of possibilities, would you choose to be something not up to the standard you want? I don’t know either. Ladies, I guarantee, once you begin to love yourself and change your perspective of what love truly means to you, you will find things will change for you. You will exude confidence, self love and a special something that will make you simply an amazing catch for any guy. Go ahead and try it! If you have any questions or comments or stories, I would love to hear from you. Connect with me!

Are You Really,

I

t’s February again. Happy National Day, Kuwait. Happy is the key word here. So tell me my friend, are you happy? Happiness, real happiness, is a rare currency. Not only today or at this era of time, but throughout the whole history of humankind. Don’t be shocked. I’m not referring to a happiness obvious on the looks but covers deep misery within. Neither am I referring to a happiness that lasts for seconds and then gets sunk in a deep ocean of irritation and inconvenience. Let’s agree on some basis beforehand and then get deeper. I will get a little bit philosophical/academic here. Not too much, just a bit. Dr. David Hawkins says that there are varied levels of consciousness that people live in accord with; you might want to call them energy fields or emotion-thought waves. In each level, the subject (you or me) experiences certain emotions and thought patterns throughout their day. For example, there are people who always strive to protect themselves. They embrace the worldview that considers the world as a dangerous place. They feel endangered of almost everything, which makes fear their most dominant emotion. There are others who are angry about the world to the extent that tiny situations trigger them and get them mad. They might say that they want to improve the world (politically or socially) but this isn’t the issue; they are just reflecting their innermost emotion, i.e. anger, and projecting it outside. The levels of consciousness go up to the point of courage, the courage to admit one’s own responsibility, which is a major shift that most people don’t dare to reach. When people admit their own responsibility of themselves, that they don’t require anything outside to make them happy, only then come the levels of real positivity; acceptance, love, & joy. With the acceptance of everything, one will be truly happy, because then he/she won’t depend on outer factors to make them fulfilled, but rather on their inner stillness even in the midst of chaos. Nothing then can shake their stillness. Only then people will touch the beauty and joys of life.

Pieces by Farah Designs to Enliven Your Life!

Pieces by Farah is a brand, I launched in the year 2011, a Functional mix of Furniture & Home Accessories manufactured in Kuwait. Pieces by Farah is not just about unique & amazing Furniture & Home accessory lines but is also about quality & craftsmanship. Pieces comes in 3 wide ranges namely, Furniture Pieces, Lighting Pieces & Home Accessories. The distinctive design & its practical application are the most fascinating aspect of the line. The adaptability & functionality of the Furniture pieces, the exquisiteness of the Lighting pieces & exclusiveness of the home accessory line are the endearing facets of its startling evolution. Pieces, as a concept was evolved out of the need to create multifunctional pieces that are adaptable & useful for tight spaces. My intention was just not to create an artistically beautiful piece but also functional that made sense to the space constraint. I focused more on exploring form & functions of each piece to gather their diverse application than what one would see at a glance. I sought to create pieces that are practical & serviceable to newlyweds who live in apartments and these pieces in turn unveil their versatility & resourcefulness while entertaining guests. Pieces as I already mentioned, is a functional mix of furniture that lets you to customize each piece as per ones taste. The beauty being each piece comes with more than 4 pallets and each pallet has over 30 options to customize from, resulting in creating hundreds of unique pieces. The Product ranges from Furniture, Lighting to Home Accessories. The furniture collection is a vast compilation of functional pieces ranging from coffee table, side tables and centre table to single seaters that can be converted into individual puffs. The lighting collection is a set of customizable lamp shades ranging from floor to table lamps. The newest entrant, Home Accessories is the most extensive blend of the lot, ranging from vases to tablewares. Here I would delve more into the Tablewares which is a significant part of my collection.

TABLEWARES

The tablewares form an integral part of any dining experience. The kind of tableware that you choose for dining leaves a positive effect on the meal taken, be it when you are alone or when you are hosting an elaborate party. They not only lend elegance to most simple dinner but also add an element of excitement that makes dining a memorable experience. The Tableware design whether it’s simple or intricate, enhances the aura of the room where the meal is served & also complements the meal that has been painstakingly prepared. Creating memories becomes effortless when one knows how to add magic to everyday life with use of tablewares. Pieces By Farah Tableware collections comprises of small bowls & trays, bread basket, embrace bowls to Compartment Trays & large Cone bowls that can be used for large & substantial gatherings. The uniqueness is not only due to the variety of shades available which is customizable but more due to the material used – Hardened Crochet. The distinctiveness of the tablewares shaped out of the hardened crochets, lies in its reputation for quality, design& its customizability. Tablewares are not only suitable for small gatherings but are also adaptable for bigger occasions like weddings & receptions. Below detailed are the descriptions of some of our exclusive products:

The Trays Pieces:

Pieces have a wide range of trays that are appropriate for any kind of gatherings. First comes our Bowl trays which come in 3, 4 & 6 bowls- which is immensely popular for distributing dry fruits & nuts. Second is the Round, Square & Rectangle Trays which are regular tray coming in different sizes ranging from small, medium to large & finally we have the Compartment Trays ranging from one , two & three. The compartments trays are highly received due to its functionality. They can be used for serving food at one side & tissue on the other side or spoons & forks on the other end or desserts on one side & the topping on the other side‌the options are endless varying according to one desire & taste.

All our Pieces can be ordered on line, so kindly visit our website: www.piecesbyfarah.com

The Cake Stand: The most unassuming yet the most refined Piece is the Cake Stand, which hold the dessert overhead & has storage underneath for the serving plates. A beauty that can carry alone, irrespective of the spectacular dessert that it displays. The Cake Cover Piece & Tri Cover Piece are part of the series that inherits same exclusiveness yet performs its job effortlessly.

The Coffee Trays & Tea Tumbler Sets: One of the most desired Pieces is the Coffee Tray. Coffee, being the regional favorite, is to Middle East what Chocolates are to Swiss. Saying this the amount of coffee being served is just mind blowing hence with this in mind our coffee tray comes with 12 set of glasses which ease in dispensing the coffees faster. Pieces also have Tea tumbler Sets which come in different shades to match the mood of the space or the owner. You have an option of two shapes, Flower for regular & Square for those who prefer a modern touch.

EACH a business with a noble cause

This month’s visit is quite extraordinary. It is the best visit I made to date; the place I visited, and the business I discovered is just amazing. It’s unique. It’s different. And it’s something worth a lot of praise, admiration and support. Dr Raghad Al Motabbagani, a Saudi therapist specialized in helping children with various disabilities overcome their problems and obstacles with horseback riding started to give sessions in various locations here in Kuwait. The fact that the sessions take place in several locations might sound very convenient to some, but it is in fact due to lack of funding. Not that Dr Raghad is complaining -- on the contrary, she is full of positivity and is adamant on helping people no matter the cost. She says that as long as she has a horse, a saddle, and a child in need of help, she’s ready to help. I met the parent of one of the children. She was seemed very happy and relieved to have met Dr Raghad. It was one of the most inspiring moments I have witnessed recently. The mother of the 5-year old girl told me, “I was very happy when I found out that Dr Raghad can offer this great help at such an affordable cost. It’s such a tiring journey to discover that your child had a mental disability, and it’s another story of agony and pain to find suitable help for this child. Dr Raghad’s business is a true blessing.” I was brought to tears when I finally met the gorgeous 5-year old girl. She was very smart, brave, and very loving. As is my nature when I see kids, I kissed her cheeks and she gave me a very warm hug and a kiss on my cheek. It was very beautiful. I felt so happy that she is being helped by someone as Dr Raghad. This child, and I’m sure many other children, are bright and wonderful and they deserve to be given a chance to improve and communicate. After the kiss and the hug, she withdrew and went to a world of her own. She was very reclusive, but Dr Raghad managed to manipulate all the guarding fences this little girl has built; she started to speak to her in a medium she understands better due to her mental -- I don’t wanna say disability, let’s just say “state” … She started to sing the commands to the child. Soon enough, the child started to hum to the tune, and then to my awe she spoke the commands to the horse. She said,” Walk, Daisy.” And Daisy walked! What a wonderful breakthrough! A child on the spectrum of autism, speaking a command to a horse! “What we try to do is try to force the patient to face the reality of here and now,” explained Dr Raghad. Assisting her are her two daughters, who are ever so affectionate and warm towards all the kids. Seeing them interact was beyond inspiring. Dr Raghad can be reached via phone on number 55189515.

A Kuwaiti girl goes to

Antarctica

We met Maryam and instantly fell in love. She’s passionate, positive, and has high aspirations. Just by sitting with her, our office filled with positivity and joy. Maryam studied in the USA and then in Spain, and throughout her studies she traveled to several places around the world. We met her and talked about her recent trip to Antractica.

Q: Why did you go to Antarctica? What did you enjoy the most about the trip?

A: I have always wanted to visit a new and different place as opposed to the cities I usually visit, besides that I wanted to go somewhere far and that might be considered as “the end/ edge of the world”. I enjoyed the wilderness of Antarctica, the best thing about my trip was that i got to experience nature at its fullest where there is nothing manmade or altered, and the activities we did during our trip such as hiking, mountaineering, kayaking, and camping were very enjoyable. Not to forget the amazing group of people traveling on the same ship where most of them are frequent travellers, and you get to hear stories about their experiences around the world.

28

February 2013

Q: Talk to us a little about the project you’re starting for cancer survivors

A: While I was in Antarctica I was inspired by many travelers on the ship, especially some breast cancer survivors who came to experience the adventure of Antarctica. While I was there I started thinking of creating a similar activity for the breast cancer survivors in Kuwait by arranging a trip every year so they would travel and experience new destination and a new adventure. As a start, I am creating a simple greeting cards project (@ikrooti) as a small business to help raise some money for the fund as a start.

Q: When do you plan to do this?

A: Hopefully during this year. Currently I am searching for breast cancer survivors through family and friends, and hopefully through the City Magazine I will attract more.

Q: We know that you’re working on some greeting cards for sale to raise funds for your project. Why greeting cards?

A: I have learned that to create (or innovate) something, you need to find your pain and create the pain killer. And in my life, I was not lucky in finding (or getting) the right greeting cards that are suitable for many occasion, and that was my pain. Creating greeting cards that represents cultural events from my life was my Pain killer. Check @ikrooti to get more information.

Q: What would you say is your motto in lie? A: Do good to feel good!

What is Yalwah.com?

Yalwah.com is kuwait’s first online wedding directory/blog of its kind related to the world of weddings, events, celebrations, and all the preparations related to it. The website is subdivided into two parts on the same page that is user friendly. First of all, the directory consists of 16 categories of the best service providers in the wedding and event industry. Through these categories, users can view and select the services that suit their needs and tastes.

What makes Yalwah unique?

We are friends that have a common interest in this specific field as well as our knowledge, experience, connections, and clientele. All of these elements qualify us into being an important intermediary source of information between vendors and clients within quality and high standards that are the basis of our work.

Does your website offer any kind of discounts or promotions?

Yes, indeed we do! Our website offers more than just a phonebook or a regular listing, in fact all companies within the categories of our directory have special offers or packages specifically for the Yalwah clients (website users). Our aim is to serve clients who need assistance in planning their happy moments within the wide spectrum of events.

How does the directory work?

The directory currently has 16 different categories. These categories appear on the website and are clickable to take you to the list of companies within these categories, then the user can select the company of their choice and view its special page that contains the company’s information along side with offers and promotions provided by that specific company. At the end of their selection journey, they will end up having a specialized list of choices.

What are your current activities?

We are already pre occupied by the website and our clients, we participated in a highly important event which we sponsored and were guest speakers at, which was “LDSB” Legal Department for small businesses. We showed our role and support in such awareness campaigns where we showed support for all small businesses. We are also participating in P2BK in March!

What do you wish to achieve in the future with Yalwah.com ?

Yalwah wants to expand its borders locally and regionally as being the most prominent source of information and high quality services in the field of weddings, events, and celebrations!

What would be your advice to any ladies who are thinking of establishing their own business but are reluctant or in need of advice?

We would advise anyone starting any type of business to never give up and to always believe in yourself no matter what obstacles come along the way, even if you started small, it will gradually expand and prosper through your commitment, effort, and continuation

Emerging Weight Loss Trends

W

ere in the second month of 2013, and it doesn’t seem like your resolution to loose weight will last. Perhaps you have made similar resolutions year after year and have not seen any substantial results. The diets and personal sacrifices have brought little reward in your quest to merely get back in shape, reduce your risk for obesity or loose substantial and life-threatening fat. In such cases it is natural to get disheartened. If you are reading this, and can relate to this scenario, either personally or with regards to a loved one, I wish to tell you that you are not alone. Here in Kuwait, as well as across the globe, this problem also plagues the staggering, and growing proportions of individuals that suffer with weight loss year after year. Growing rates of obesity are threatening the state of health worldwide. As a means of trying to combat this effect, health practitioners, researchers and even government officials/spokespersons have begun to preach the need for our societies to become less indulgent in poor eating habits and sedentary lifestyles, and more reliant on proper diet and exercise. Many have responded to these petitions, and are taking significant measures to ensure their health and longevity. Take for instance the United States. Within our lifetimes, no one can deny that this country has been at the forefront of the discovery of many of the world’s great inventions and insights that enhance our daily lives. As a result, with the alarming global rate of obesity, there is an intense interest in the development of non-surgical alternative methods to combat obesity. Many can argue the pros and cons of these alternative methods, however this is not my aim in this discourse. It is merely my hope to identify the emergence of these alternate weight loss trends, and encourage you the reader to consult your medical practitioner if you have specific interest in any of the succeeding procedures so that you may properly gauge whether you should purse any interest in a given technique(s). In this article, we shall consider 3 techniques: Metabolic Boasters; Weight-Loss Hypnosis; and Fat Freezing.

First, let us discuss Metabolism Boasters. These are compounds and techniques that directly enhance a person’s natural metabolic rate, and in so doing increase their fat burning capacities. There are exhaustive lists of such compounds (in either natural forms or dietary supplements) and identified methods that range from increasing your water intake to enhance kidney function; increasing the consumption of foods high in fiber that slow down the rate of digestion and reduce food cravings and binge eating; reducing the consumption of foods that are high in sugar and salt that reduce metabolic rates; the consumption of several small meals across a day; and the use of cold drinks that force your body to burn greater quantities of energy that can be stored in fat deposits in an attempt to regulate normal temperature. Next, we shall consider Weight-Loss Hypnosis. This technique is generally used in conjunction with diet and exercise plans. This procedure is aimed to utilize the brain’s ability to intensely concentrate on a subject, in this case weight loss, and help an individual hyperfocus on his or her weight loss goal and aid the pound shedding process. As you read this you may consider that it is difficult to gauge the success of this process, and you would be absolutely correct in your judgment. This is because most scientific studies that have been used to evaluate this process have observed minor weight loss that averages around 3 kilograms, and have been challenged for the manner by which these conclusions are made. Nevertheless that may or may not be a placebo effect that can help the weight loss process. The last method that will be discussed is Fat Freezing. This process uses Cryolipolysis, a method that vacuum pressure and intense cooling temperatures to significantly reduce the temperature of fat cells (in fatty deposits) below the skin, causing them to rupture and thereby reduce the sizes of fat layers. This process is considered as a non-surgical substitute for liposuction. During a treatment session, the fat freezing device is applied directly to the skin and thermal conduction is exploited to rapidly and transiently decrease tissue normal temperatures. As one could imagine, with this process, there can be numbness and bruising of skin covering the fat. However, no longterm damage or discomfort has resulted from such procedures. The massive waiting lists and costs associated with weight loss surgeries, and the substantial lifestyle demands these processes require, may increase the demand for alternative weight loss regimens. Furthermore, living in this blessed nation we benefit from the many pleasures of life. These pleasures, as previously witnessed in other societies, also have the ability to lead us to more sedentary lifestyles that foster rapid and significant weight gain. Unfortunately, for many it is generally easier to add fat than eliminate it, and thus weight loss can be an enormous challenge to confront. Nevertheless, if you are in such a situation that requires you to loose weight there are still proven methods that can provide welcomed results. The methods outlined above have been shown to be quite useful, but as always for long-term results there’s seems to be no getting away from making lifestyle changes that rely on proper diet and exercise.

Bright Smile for The harmony of the teeth is the secret behind every beautiful smile. This directly reflects on the individual external appearance, which at the end has a great impact on their self-confidence. To create a beautiful smile it is crucial to follow golden principles. Not only does it involve proper alignment, shape and color of the teeth in relation to the face and lips, it goes further by taking into consideration the personality of the individual. Where even when following worldwide guidelines, we aim to keep an individual smile as part of their own personalized characteristics. With the major advancement of technology we see in the world of prosthodontics and cosmetic dentistry, it is now possible to achieve the desired smile in a rather short period of time. This in return has a positive impact on the individual especially in their self-confidence an acceptance around people. Today, a white smile compliments a white wedding. Having a white smile is one of the top esthetic demands that every bride stresses on in order to shine on her wedding day with a glowing smile. Veneers and lumineers are one of the latest options provided in prosthodontic and cosmetic dentistry. Basically, they are a thin, strong layer of ceramics (porcelain), a restorative material, that are placed on the outer surface of the front teeth. Veneers and lumineers similar in concept to eye contact lenses. Veneers have a thickness ranging from 0.5-0.7mm; whereas, lumineers have a thickness of 0.3mm. Veneers and lumineers can be the proper choice of treatment to change the color and shape of teeth. Additionally, they are used to correct any present dental abnormalities and defects such as closing a diastama, mild crowding and visible cracks on the surface of the teeth.

Every Bride

As a result, with the help of veneers and lumineers we now can create a bright smile that is in uniform in shape and color with the rest of the teeth. This method is an efficient dental cosmetic treatment that can be achieved within a short period of time when compared to other forms of treatment such as orthodontic treatment. To every bride, take the steps to shine with a beautiful mesmerizing smile on your special day. Consider consulting your prosthodontist before your wedding to follow professional advice and recommendations in order to obtain maximum benefits and satisfactory results. Prosthodontists advice brides-to-be to initially visit the dentist before the wedding in a proper and reasonable period of time. This will allow them to efficiently plan their treatment step by step. It will also allow them to fabricate primary molds to give an over view of the treatment plan as well as discuss thoroughly the treatment and the predicted outcomes. These steps will ensure achieving maximum results of every case depending on the state and number of teeth involved. In general, the bride is recommended to visit the dentist at least one month before her big day. It is also important to point out that prosthodontic and cosmetic dentistry requires patience and complete cooperation on behalf of the individual. It is strongly advised not to rush the treatment because remember prosthodontic and cosmetic dentistry is very similar to building a house. The more time you spend on the foundation, the better the results.

To all our brides to be, your bright smile is our goal‌.

A lovely art gallery and cultural experience, Tahani Al-Ayoub’s I Am the Kuwaiti Woman is a photography exhibition that takes place in one of the alleys of Shuwaikh. The exhibition displays magestically in black and white the great pictures of Kuwaiti ladies, moments frozen from their everyday lives.

The idea for the exhibition started with Tahani Al-Ayoub, a photographer who saw that the current tense situtation is very negative and filled with discord. It is at times like these that it becomes important to remember the suffering of our ancestors who worked very hard on keeping the rhythm of life ongoing amidst the long absence of men in their long trips into the sea for pearl diving. Kuwaiti women played a significant role not just in the far past, but also in the near past during the 1990 invasion. Kuwaiti women stood side by side with their brothers and fought for their freedom. The exhibition aims to create a sort of solidarity and union between today’s devided Kuwait. The photographer Tahani Al-Ayoub managed to create a very interesting space for contemplation, dialogue and reflection on the beauty of the past, and all the great values that existed strongly in the past.

Photographing

The National Holidays

he Law of Kuwait prohibits taking pictures of people in public places without their notion, but allows photography in public events and celebrations, or places in which a person is expected to be vulnerable to photographers’s cameras. So, we find that national holidays in Kuwait must not be missed out as a chance to practice event and street photography, which is based on documenting physical expressions and emotions. One of the most important tips for a successful photo-shoot is to take as much photographs as you can. Get close to the people and show their faces, or choose a telephoto lens for closeup shots. Also, take multiple shots of the same scene to ensure that you get the best moment. People often welcome photographers and deliberately draw their attention during these events, so always be ready. Despite the willingness of people to be observed, it must be taken into account that women may not welcome having their pictures taken of them nor of their children. Allude to be authorized either by a smile, salute or simply by waving your camera. Furthermore, choosing a high visibility vest shows that you are a trustworthy photographer and encourages the public to interact happily with your camera. Remember, look behind your back because the best shot might be happening over there! Documenting the national holidays will be incomplete if you don’t take some shots of the buildings which compete with each other in decorations and splendid illuminations. Maybe you’ll have to get a prior written authorization to shoot some of them, such as banks, stock exchange and government buildings. Photographers are often stopped by security guards. But, above this frustrating fact, they usually get the most beautiful footage of the cityscape during this season. Perhaps you should accompany some pros to learn where you can find the perfect locations if this is your first time shooting. Finally, you don’t have to worry, because you will get so many photographers which will leave you puzzled of what are you going to do with all of them at the end of the celebrations. Happy National Holidays my beloved Kuwait.

GOLD ‫قدميك ندميك ولو جديدك أغناك‬

Friday Market Despite all the megamalls, hypermarkets and grand shopping centers, the Friday Market, Kuwait’s most renowned market remains one of the biggest landmarks in the country. You don’t have to buy anything there; all you have to do is just walk into the place and take a stroll between the aisles. It’s very comforting to know that with all the inflation and price hikes, there remains a place where you can purchase goods with very reasonable prices. I found a very lovely set of outdoors seating coushins at a very affordable, rate. There are also the traditional Kuwaiti painted dishes and glasses which are very cute, I could almost swear that the tea tastes very different and much better when you use them. I also found small wooden boxes decorated with beautiful carvings. They were very wellmade, I’m pretty sure if they were sold outside the price would have been very high. We also saw a lot of fabrics, strings, and buttons thrown around. For those who would like to look around, they will be able to find a few gems amid the pile of stuff. The Friday Market is indeed a true gem of Kuwait. It captures quite a lot of the Kuwaiti sense. It’s one of the very best places in Kuwait, seriously.

Angelatto: Unique Dessert, Delicuous Experience

I have been an avid follower of Angelatto on Instagram. Their picture of the chocolate fountain was always one of my major weaknesses. I could almost smell the warm aroma of choclate just by looking at the picture. Recently I was invited to a dinner, and decided to take dessert form there. The trip to Angelatto was totally worthwhile! The name of the place combines the words Angel and Gelatto, and indeed the gelattos are angelic/heavenly!

Let me tell you about the gelatto cup, a delicious treat made of three layers: sorbet, ice cream, and biscuit. I tried the their signature Spicy Chocolate. Words cannot describe how good this flavor is; it’s just amazing. I don’t think I have ever tasted anything this good in my life. Their banoffee flavor is another story, studded with delicious tiny banana candy and intense in flavor. They also have a raspberry and frozen yogrut gelatto cup, but I couldn’t taste it; I had to leave room for the cake. They serve a yummy kanafa cake, made with creamy cheese ice cream filling and sprinkled with orange-colored kanafa noodles. There was also a banoffee cake, a red velvet cake (who doesn’t love anything red velvet?) but the winner in my opinion is a scrumptious concoction that involves lemongrass and raspberry. The base is an almond cake, and it is topped with raspberry gelatto and then a layer of lemongrass gelatto. The different flavors blend together very well. It’s absolutely delicious. Let’s start from the beginning; the deocration is exceptional. The wooden furntiture, the great lighting, and the beautiful colors of the displayed items are very inviting. I felt as if I was transported to a cozy European cafe. The place smells of waffles and coffee, two of my favorite food aromas ever. I spent nearly four horus at the cafe; time indeed flies when you’re around great food. I took a look around the many fridges, and all items on display were virbantly colorful, made of ice cream. Flavors vary between those of tangy fruits, rich deep coffee flavors and biting spices. They also had ice cream sandiwches made with macaroons; delicious! Some of the flavors that I fell in love with are chocolate, vanilla, laveder, lemon, caramel, blossom water, bubblegum, and raspberry. Some of these flavors are a little unfamiliar, but they taste exceptional.

I couldn’t resist but walk into the kitchen of Angelatto, where I met the chef and he was kind enough to let me help in making some dessert. I made Snickers waffles and learned the best way to present them in the most appetizing and attractive manner. It goes perfectly with a cup of esspresso. With Angelatto, it’s a different story: an affogato, a scoop of vanilla ice cream downed in coffee, which comes with a little bit of melted chocolate on the side, that’s completely pampering yourself.

Another fantastic dessert they offer is the gelatto bonbon; colorful ice cream balls on wooden sticks, which can be styled like the Kuwaiti flag. A wonderful idea for a gift to be given to friends or family. You should definitely go to Angelatto next time you’re going to a dinner or lunch and looking for dessert to take with you. Or you know what? Just go get a treat for yourself. Why shouldn’t you? Until I see you in our next issue to talk about another food experience, take care!

introduces CLEAN, a real food initiative theCITY Magazine, in partnership with a number of passionate business owners in Kuwait launched CLEAN, a real-food initiative that aims to spread awareness about the importance of organic food. The initiative aims to hold workshops, seminars, lectures and cooking classes throughout the year in order to raise awareness and help people achieve their goal in having a healthier lifestyle. The first CLEAN event took place on the 29th of January at Chef Boutique, one of the participating organizers of the event. It consisted of talks by four speakers. Dr Nada Alragom representing Kuwait Food Revolution went first and spoke about the importance of consuming foods that are not processed. Her talk included information about the many unhealthy additives in processed foods and the dangers they pose on our health. This was followed by a talk by Juna Alawadhi, a representative of Jadi Morgan, an organic restaurant in Kuwait that caters for people with food allergies, as well as those who work long hours and don’t have the time to prepare healthy wholesome meals. Ms Alawadhi spoke about the importance of choosing wholesome natural ingredients for preparing meals, especially breakfast. Starting the day with the right meal sets the tone for the rest of the day, and that’s something vital. Mr Hamad Alkulaib, owner of Biophilia Nurseries spoke about several misconceptions people have about the ability to grow food in Kuwait’s climate. Through using certain equipment and techniques, people can grow their own food with ease and convenience, whether indoors or outdoors, he said. Mr Waleed Alessa of Natureland, Kuwait’s premiere organic food brand, and the owner of Alraha Stone Mill Organic Restaurant, shared with the audience some tips about the importance of using good oils in our diet. He explained to the audience oil extraction techniques and their differences, and spoke about the benefits of different oils, but especially virgin coconut oil. The lectures were followed by a dinner prepared by Ms Shaikha Alarfaj, owner of Ginger Vegan Restaurant. Alarfaj, who has been consuming a plant-based diet for over 9 years now spoke about how eating more vegetables has helped her regain better health and vitality. The ingredients for the dinner were generously provided by Mr Waleed Alessa and prepared by Ms Shaikha. Of course there were some snacks provided by Ginger Vegan Restaurant and Alraha Stonemill Organic Restaurant, as well. The event attendees left the with a bag of goodies which included several gifts from the participating businesses to help them embark on their journey of a healthier life. theCITY Magazine would like to thank the participating businesses for their efforts in making this event a success. Special thanks go to Mr Faisal Khajah at ABYAT for his great efforts. Follow CLEAN’s instagram account @cleankwt for updates on their future events.

The Matrix Trilogy

Two keywords describing “The Matrix Trilogy”… influence and dimension. This movie is so complex that it combines different mythologies, religions, interpretations and philosophies. I have to say that the Wachowski brother’s reflects their multifaceted thinking in the movie. And the depth of the dimension layers which covers the plot is so profound. Not to mention how simple they deliver it to the audience and nothing was lost in translation.

CANDYNAILS,

Lovely Nails, Vibrant Colors

February 2013

One of the new unique businesses in Kuwait that cater for ladies is Candynails, located on the coastal strip of Fintas. We were impressed by their lovely colors and the professionalism of Fatima Khuraibet, the owner of this cute nail spa. Here is our chitchat with Fatima:

the latest worldwide trends. The newest nail trends are the leather effect, velvet and ceramic effects. Girls like everything that is new and daring. We make sure we satisfy all our trendy customers on whats new and fashionable.

Q: Could you introduce yourself to our readers?

Q: Do you offer anything else other than nail services?

Q: What made you decide to open a nail salon?

A: As we are living in a hectic world, we all need to unwind from the lifestyle we live in, the moment the client walks in the salon, something special is offered, and that’s why I’m still growing. My plan is to have 3 sections at the salon, Candy Nails, Candy Hair and Candy Face & Body. Candy Nails is phase one of the salon plan which I have just completed.

The second phase that I am working on now is Candy Hair. In this section of the salon, we focus on hair treatments, dyes, trendy hairstyles. In the near future I will be starting the Candy Face & Body section. Q: What do you wish to achieve in the future?

A: I wish to expand first in Kuwait, then later provide our unique services to the Middle East. Our aim is to educate people more on how to take care of their nails and skin.

Q: What would be your advice to people with ideas for small businesses?

A: Select a business that you enjoy and that complements your lifestyle. The biggest challenge of being a small business owner is also the biggest reward – compassionately managing the employees. And in addition to having responsibility for your employees,You must be involved in your business to make your mark. Even the best staff needs your attention, whether it be to offer constructive criticism or praise. Don’t isolate yourself from your employees or customers. The best advice is to stick with it. A business plan is great, but be prepared to revise it continuously. There WILL be bumps in the road. Your experience in business and in your particular industry grows each day. And, what happens around you can change daily. You have to draw upon these things in order to work through the bumps in the road. There is a sigh of relief once you hit the seven-year mark. Establish core values – be honest and fair, give back to the community, take care of your customers and

A: I’m Fatima Khuraibet and I’m the owner of candynails. I have a bachelors degree in MIS. I currently work in Kuwait Oil Company.

A: My basic concept was to appeal to a certain client. I wanted the business woman, the career woman who wanted the convenience of quality nail care. That was the primary consideration when I conducted my feasibility study dealing with opening a salon.

Q: Do you think the location is good enough to get you a good flow of clients?

A: Yes, I believe our location is excellent since it’s the first nail salon in that area. We cover Fintas, Egaila, Abu-Hasani, Qurain and their surroundings. Plus, we are located on the coastal road with a great view and plenty of parking space. Fintas coastal area is a booming location with many creative businesses opening and providing all the services needed to residents living away from Kuwait City.

Q: What makes your spa different than the rest of the nail spas and salons in Kuwait?

A: We always make sure our customers feel comfortable during their nail salon experience. And I firmly believe that an educated client is always a good client. So I educate them on taking care of their nails, on how their nails should look. Even if I don’t do their nails, I feel that it is important for the client to recognize what good work is and to be able to tell another technician how to do their nails. We have trained our technicians on taking care of the diabetic foot. Diabetics are very sensitive and therefore we have our very own technique and care for those ladies. The salon business is a nurturing industry, and

employees, and have fun. Remember the ‘Grandma Rule’ – treat everyone the way you would want your grandmother to be treated. You can reach us on Twitter and Instagram by looking up @candynails

consequently, I believe in creating a nurturing environment for both employees and clients. As a client, you are treated to the ‘Candy Nails Method’ where every appointment is designed to find out what your needs are and then customized to fit those needs. The feedback is welcome, and rare instances of negative comments are promptly researched and addressed.

Q: What are some of the latest trends in nail colors and styles these days in Kuwait?

A: The world of nail trends and fashion is endless and limitless, we are updated on a monthly basis on

How To Create

Fashion

ashion design education does not happen in the typical university lecture hall or laboratory. It takes place in studios (places for work) and through seminars where talents are nurtured and developed through a process of a project based learning, practice, and critical thinking. You will learn to change and innovate. Think differently, unconventionally from a new perspective. You will have to view things more expansively, if you desire to contribute in the fashion design world. Leading fashion couturiers and groundbreaking trendsetters challenged the rules of style, they have created high standards and major influences in hautecouture and ready-to-wear to fabulously elegant accessories through the decades. Their designs have addressed an international audience – not just the privileged classes, but literally, the whole planet. Being a successful fashion designer not only requires drawing, an eye for colour and texture, an ability to visualize concepts in three dimensions, and the mechanical skills in sewing and cutting fabrics. But it also requires knowledge of the business and marketing aspects in the fashion world. Fashion designers cannot neglect the need to shock, to produce something new. It is an extremely competitive industry. Fabrics, colours, motifs, and forms change from season to the next. Seasonal fashion shows start in New York and end in Paris. While the fashion conscious audiences around the world witness style movements and scan the pages of fashion magazines to keep up with the latest trends. We all know that what we wear is an enormously powerful statement that can reveal more about us than anything we may say or do. And fashion is a way of giving a clear message about who we are. However, the abiding fascination with fashion trends and must have items has nothing to do with design and creativity. To help explain more about fashion design I will present articles in the coming issues of the city magazine that focuses primarily on the path that led to the way we look now.

Black & White

Acessories

Black and white are definitely two of the most popular colors found in fashion as they are never absent from the runway fashion presentations.

The black and white fashion trend is a timeless trend which will never go out of style due to the elegance and simplicity exuded by the colors, it has alway been a trend in almost every fashion labels, in clothing and even in accessories!

Every designer can not resist this chockablock trend! Black & white pairings are an ‘It’ look for this season, its just that simple! “Its great that something so classic is suddenly so cutting-edge” that’s what they say!

Black & White trend never been limited on clothings only! It came into fashion accessories too, you can just mix and match black outfit with a white accessories, where white accessories can always add an unexpected element to an all-black outfit, but again, it’s not as simple as it sounds .. Really!

All of your outfits can instantly be made to dance with the vibe of the moment with the addition of the right Black OR White OR Black & White accessory piece.

No need to add a solid accessory to a bold print to balance it, like a big, beautiful black and white floral dress. Pair the print dress with a simple, solid belt to define the waist and a pair of not-too-delicate heeled shoes (black usually looks better with print).

Usually black & white jewelry are paired with gold, silver, platinum or dark bronze. The point here is your piece must always look classy in an understatedly sophisticated manner.

Inspire yourself from these simple advices and exude the right amount of elegance and sexiness every woman needs in order to underline best her femininity.

The History of Makeup! When you actually look at the habits of people hundreds or thousands of years ago, you will see that appearance has always been important to societies. In fact people have been working very hard to develop the cosmetics. For example; they used Pottery, Fish scales, water, berries, flowers, charcoal, almond oil.. etc to bring out lips sticks, foundations, powders & eye liners, just to look their best! And that’s why cosmetic has such a long history. How did it start? How did it develop? Let us tell you!!

The Ancient Egyptians were developing almost every kind of cosmetic that we would use today. They had creams for stretch marks and to fight aging. They used oils to moisturize their skin and they had collections of perfumes. Most important was the eye makeup “obviously”! They used mixed ingredients to bring out “Kohl” which is the dark-colored powder to make their eyes stand out. Also, to complement the fancy eye makeup, they applied a mixture of red clay and water to their lips and cheeks. The nails weren’t left out either, they used henna to dye them orange.. Yes! It was extremely important to them that they looked and smelled good.

Around the 1920s tanned skin gained popularity. By 1930, there were several products to tan your skin without the sun. And NOW! Today there is a wide variety of cosmetics for every need of which anyone could imagine!

In England in the middle Ages, During the Renaissance, only the Aristocracy used cosmetics. In that time, a “pale face” was the desired look because it defined your place in society. And to achieve that look women and men used variety of products to lighten up their skin. Some of their products were quite dangerous to their health, until they found an alternative cosmetic which is the facial powder that made of zinc oxide. And that’s what they still use today. In the Edwardian society, makeup regained its appeal. Women were expected to have a youthful appearance. And back then cosmetics could be easily bought at any beauty salons, but women were ashamed to admit they needed help to look pretty and young, so they go and buy cosmetics in secrecy to avoid anyone knowing that they needed the products to look young.

The history of cosmetic has been quite varied and colorful, and makeup today continues to be incredibly culturally diverse. It is not only a way to enhance one’s beauty; but it has become somewhat of an art and it is the foundation for the fashion world!

SS13 Catwalk Show Report

After travelling to four major fashion capitals in as many weeks, be it via Eurostar, aeroplane or Style.com, it’s time to sort out the directional trends from the flash-in-the-pan eyebrow-raisers for Spring/Summer 2013...

1 Burberry Prorsum ss 2013

2 Peter Pilotto ss 2013

3 Balmain ss 2013

1

Mirror Metallics: Spring 2013 Fashion Week–On the runways this season, designers have really put their pedals to the metal for Spring 2013, amping up everyone’s favorite leather treatment: metallic. Mirrorshine, high-gloss metallics, whether in silver, pewter, copper, gold–as well as the increasingly popular iridescent “oil slick” treatments– add just enough futuristic twist to move this trend forward. Jonathan Saunders (left) goes Space Age at London Fashion Week, Z Spoke by Zac Posen (center) creates a new neutral at New York Fashion Week, while Simone Rocha (right) goes for high-shine gold at London Fashion Week.

2

HYPER PRINT: London Fashion Week designers presented a stunning array of print, making the biggest impact when worn head-to-toe. Renowned for her striking prints, design talent Mary Katrantzou wowed with enlarged graphic prints which represented stamps and obsolete foreign bank notes, giving the collection a cultural nostalgia. Designs from Peter Pilotto also drew admiration from audiences, enhancing their penchant for print by adding texture, bead embellishment and embroidery to their complex digitally-inspired patterns. PPQ also shone with their collection which was based around a stunning, reimagined paisley print with heart and floral elements worked into the intricate pattern.

4 oscar de la renta ss 2013

3

Optical: Optical prints have also made a come back. Building on the stripe trend, geometric shapes in black, or even colours supported the striped brigade down the catwalk.

4

Bright colours: Bright colours are a must in summer. Shimmering in the light and complementing that healthy summer glow. This season, the bright, jewel hues range from fuchsia to ochre and emerald green to cobalt blue. Wear the together, as colour blocking, match them or go for a degradée style.

5 dolce and gabbana ss 2013

5

-Sheer luxe: With light fabrics, and light colours, (and black), transparency is inevitable, and the Spring Summer 2013 collections embraced it. From sports couture to risqué ensembles, transparency is key. More demure, lady like expressions of sheer also graced the catwalk, and they’re the ones that will fly off the racks come spring.

6

Bold stripes: Every spring we see the return of stripes but what is unique to spring/summer 2013, is big and bold stripes. Keeps this trend going in bold proportions with broader stripes of alternating bright and dark colours. While the key colour scheme is monochromatic, designers have included shades of greys, greens and navy blues that speak of confident styling in their collection

6 Marc Jacobs

Ruffles: with a season where the collections all shared lightness, in terms of fabric, construction and colouring, ruffles also proved to be very popular. When wanting to add some depth, some texture and extra movement to highly studied, yet light, destructured garments, the ruffle is the solution. Hong Kong is a huge city with several district articles containing sightseeing, restaurant, nightlife and accommodation listings — consider printing them all. Hong Kong, Heūng góng in Cantonese, meaning fragrant harbour is a place with multiple personalities, as a result of being both Cantonese Chinese and under a more recent contemporary ex-British influence. Today, the former British colony is a major tourism destination for China’s increasingly affluent mainland population. It is also an important hub in East Asia with global connections to many of the world’s cities. It is a unique destination that has absorbed people and cultural influences from places as diverse as Vietnam and Vancouver and proudly proclaims itself to be Asia’s World City.

Scientific Research Team Talk About Their Passion

The Scientific Research Team (SRT) is considered to be an integral part of the Voluntary Work Center (VWC) under the leadership of Her Highness Sheikha Amthal Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah. The idea of formulating this team was intended to merge scientific research with voluntary work through community service, in other words, admitting Kuwaiti volunteers, training them under the supervision of qualified personnel to conduct voluntary activities which will enrich their personalities and provide them with unique scientific experience. The team primary objective is to conduct voluntary environmental projects which are based on scientific concepts, that adds uniqueness and quality to the team’s multiple activities making it a specialized Kuwaiti team that emphasizes the combined usage of analytical and scientific tools with voluntary work. At SRT, we insisted that its members should come from different professions and backgrounds in the sole purpose of creating versatility in designing its environmental awareness projects and reaching for members of Kuwaiti community. The SRT member’s expertise can range from scientific research, education, finance, public relations, and literature upon which we firmly believe that this combination in specialization will be significant in assisting us in understanding and developing awareness programs which pertains to different ages like children, adults and students who are interested in environmental awareness issues. This concept of thinking will better serve and protect Kuwait environment in all its compartments such as: marine, land, and air. Our environmental projects encompass various contemporary environmental issues upon which our volunteers contribute by developing solutions, conducting lectures, and providing training sessions for the public. Currently we are supervising voluntary projects in Kuwait which covers numerous environmental topics such as: recycling of rubber tires, protection of natural coral reefs in Kuwait’s Territorial waters, and many other important educational activities with high profile clients such as Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research, Public Authority for Agriculture and Fish Resources, Kuwait Oil Company, Environment Public Authority and many other important governmental sectors in Kuwait. Our vision is to serve our beloved country Kuwait as volunteers who perform professionally through scientific research which brings uniqueness to the nature of voluntary work not only to Kuwait, but to the whole world.

Ali Al-Khudari alialkhudari@hotmail.com ALIALKHUDARI @alialkhudari

Interview with

Ali Al Saad

Can you talk to us about yourself? Pleasure to present my self. I am Ali Al Sa’ad, a 19 year old , second year university student at American university of the middle east majoring in accounting. Since my tender age I have been interested in different kinds of art namely painting , manual creativity and photography. Art has always been my favorite subject at school I completed high school with different art awards and certificates . I even took part successfully in various art competitions , artistic designs and surrealism were my great favorite. Lately by the age of 17 I have been more interested in designing women’s clothes . I am also involved in styling man’s wears. When did you start your interest in fashion?

My love for fashion has taken me for away from my home, Kuwait. Several times I have been to different regions in China and Europe. The mean reason to go to china was to find out for myself the quality of the finished products like any well known brand. Most of the products in Kuwait don’t look professionally cut and I decided to get ideas from else where , in Europe I have acquired a variety of ideas from foreign designers much more than if I were to stay only in Kuwait .

Have you had any shows or exhibition?

Personally I have not presented at a large scale in any show however for almost a year I have been designing on my own and sharing ideas only with family and friends also learning the trade as I go along and meeting professionals in the field . that year was all about creating my self and knowing what I really wanted to do in my fashion career . The following year , I felt ready to produce and present my designs in Kuwait to public because I had enough experience from foreign countries and my connections to satisfy what my business needs. So I joined some local exhibitions I felt very positive about my acquired knowledge.

Do you design clothes only for women or for both women and men?

For the time being I am interested mostly in women’s fashion. However I also have in mind to start another line regarding men’s wear with new ideas and a totally different sprite than the women’s line.

What do you focus on in your designs? What do you think makes them unique?

Regarding my designs I focus not only on the exterior part but also the interior quality finish. I am extremely demanding about an completed products, not a stitch can go missing. My close intention and ideas make my project unique.

Do you want to design clothes in your career, or do you want to keep this only a hobby?

Designing is my main objective and I am granting all my time to improve upon it as a full time accomplishment. Although I am majoring in accounting . I am looking forward to be a self employed and my studies in accounting will help me pursue my goal as a designer too .

84

February 2013

In the future I would like to go through further studies in design and get a degree. I also want to be well known as a designer in Kuwait first and I would like to compete not only nationally but also internationally going on a large scale all over the world by creating a larger industry.

THE NEW

S

Rapide Aston Martin has officially unveiled the new 2014 Rapide S which will replace the outgoing Rapide as a facelift. The improvements include changes to the exterior and interior design of the four-door coupe. Still instantly recognisable as an Aston Martin, the new Rapide S now boasts an imposing ‘face’ with the new full grille design. At the back, it got a striking new rear deck profile with a more pronounced boot lid ‘flip’. This upgrade not only aesthetic but also works to counteract lift at higher speeds. Aston Martin Chief Executive Officer, Dr Ulrich Bez said: “The Rapide S is to me, without doubt, the most beautiful four-door sports car on the market today. This is, very clearly, the power of luxury in action.

Under its long bonnet, sits a new AM11 naturally aspirated 6.0-litre V12 powerplant. Power from the new engine is up by 17% or 550 hp from the previous 470 hp. Peak torque increases, too, up from 600 Nm to 620 Nm at 5,000 rpm. New Rapide S shaves 0.3 seconds off its 0-100 km/h time, which drops from the 5.2 seconds of the current car to just 4.9 seconds for the new model. Top speed climbs, meanwhile, to 306 km/h. Transmission is a six-speed automatic with electronic shift-by-wire control system. The new Rapide S also features the latest Gen4 iteration of Aston Martin’s hi-tech Adaptive Damping System (ADS). The system now offers three distinct settings: ‘Normal’, ‘Sport’ and ‘Track’. The ADS automatically alters the suspension settings to ensure the driver has high levels of control at all times, with the ability to respond quickly to different driving conditions and adapting its set-up to suit the driver’s requirements.

FEBRUARY READS

House of Earth

The Dinner

By Woody Guthrie

By Herman Koch

The most welcome miracle of the month is this “new” novel by Woody Guthrie. The folk-singing legend died in 1967, leaving behind thousands of pages of poetry, lyrics, and prose, but only one finished novel. Now published for the first time, House of Earth seems the perfect match for his powerful autobiography Bound for Glory , carrying with it strong portrait of rural resilience and social activism.

An international best seller as winner of the Publieksprijs prize, this book features two couples at a posh restaurant in Amsterdam chatting politely before finally addressing the real issue: their teenage sons have been caught on film in a gruesome criminal act that has shaken the nation.

A Week in Winter

Mrs. Lincoln’s Dressmaker

By Maeve Binchy

By Jennifer Chiaverini

The last thing that residents in Stoneybridge expected in their sleepy little town was a bread & breakfast, but Chicky Starr’s crazy idea to somehow transform a decrepit mansion into a tourist spot turned out finally to be a success. In truth, not all the visitors to the Irish seacoast village were quite prepared for what they found or, for that matter, with each.

In Washington, DC, freedwoman Elizabeth Hobbs Keckley becomes the personal modiste (and confidante) of First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln. Chiaverini departs from her popular “Elm Creek Quilt” series to tell the story.

The Wolf Gift

A Good American

By Anne Rice

By Alex George

When Reuben Golding, a young reporter on assignment, arrives at a secluded mansion on a bluff high above the Pacific, it’s at the behest of the home’s enigmatic female owner. She quickly seduces him, but their idyllic night is shattered by violence when the man is inexplicably attacked bitten—by a beast he cannot see in the rural darkness.

Stretching from pre-World War I Germany to the Midwest of the present day, this multi-tiered debut novel tracks four generations of a single family as they respond to global events and local situations. Family connections and crises play significant parts in this carefully plotted large-scale saga, making it a fine choice for readers who yearn for full immersion fictions.

Vampires in the Lemon Grove

See Now Then

By Karen Russell

By Jamaica Kincaid

Ms. Russell deftly combines elements of the weird and supernatural with acute psychological realism; elements of the gothic with dry, contemporary humor. From apparent influences as disparate as George Saunders, Saki, Stephen King, Carson McCullers and Joy Williams, she has fashioned a quirky, textured voice that is thoroughly her own

Man marries. Woman grows old and fat. Man throws her over for a prettier version. It’s a familiar story. Yet, in Jamaica Kincaid’s voice, the scorned woman’s fury becomes a spellbinding tale, as lyrical as Paradise Lost, a resonant as a Greek epic. This is hell like none other. You descend it circle by circle, and, word by word, you yield to the storyteller’s art…Kincaid is not easy reading. Not much that is worthwhile in literature is. But she is fierce and true. Certainly, that is so of See Now Then. After 10 years of inexplicable fictional silence, she comes forth with a mighty roar.

HOROSCOPES ARIES (March 21 - April 20)

LIBRA (September 24 - October 23)

TAURUS (April 21 - MAY 21)

SCORPIO (October 24 - November 22)

GEMINI (May 22 - June 21)

SAGITTARIUS (November 23 - December 21)

Your forceful manner makes waves in the workplace. Keep your opinions to yourself this month and you will be a lot happier from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Your personal life blossoms when an old friend comes back into your life later in the month. Leo and Sagittarius play important roles.

Your strong, steady nature will keep you calm during a tumultuous month at work. You won’t fall prey to co-workers’ worries. However, it’s a different story when it comes to romance. An evening with that special someone will allow you to open up and let your emotions show.

You’ll feel like you’re on an emotional roller coaster when it comes to family this month. Relatives will be spending a lot of time with you and sharing their true feelings. Don’t hold your emotions in. Venting them will help bring you back to an even keel. Look to friends for relaxation.

CANCER (June 22 - July 22)

Bask in the glory at work this month as you successfully complete a difficult project. Your superiors will be impressed. Your social life improves and your phone won’t stop ringing. Friends you haven’t heard from in quite a long time will be in touch. Taurus and Gemini are involved.

Don’t let work get you down this month. It’s only a job; so many more important things go on after 5 p.m. Romance blossoms later in the month. You’ll be swept off your feet when you least expect it by someone whom you never thought could interest you. Gemini and Aries are involved.

You know who you are and what you can do, so don’t be a showoff at work early in the month. It can make you look foolish in front of your boss. Family matters are of prime importance this month. Show loved ones how much you care — even if they do drive you crazy at times.

Don’t let a mistake at work get you down late in the month. Just explain yourself and correct the error. You don’t lie well, so don’t try it. Your family ties grow stronger this month. As for romance, you’re riding a wave of excitement. Enjoy it and start thinking about the future.

CAPRICION (December 22 - January 19)

Keep your shoulder to the wheel at work this month. Don’t let petty arguments among coworkers distract you. A close friend will need your help. Give him or her support. However, stand your ground when he or she makes a ludicrous request. You’ll be thanked for it later.

LEO (July 23 - August 22)

AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 19)

VIRGO (August 23 - September 23)

PISCES (February 20 - March 20)

Your outgoing personality is a hit with superiors at work. They need someone to go after the heavy hitters and it very well could be you. Your loyalty to a good friend could put you in a difficult situation this month. Don’t lose someone close to you just because you’re feeling impetuous.

Even though it may be hard for you, you’re going to have to sit still when it comes to a family event this month. Let relatives make the plans and only give your input if asked. It all will work out for the best. A friend will look to you for advice later in the month. Try not to be judgmental.

Don’t be a follower at work this month. Now’s your chance to take the lead and show everyone what you’re capable of. A loved one will seem aloof this month, but don’t overreact. He or she just needs to be alone for a little while. Respect his or her wishes. You’ll be close again soon.

Life is your stage this month — make your mark wherever you go. However, don’t let your satiric nature go overboard. Remember to respect other people’s feelings. Show compassion to a friend in need later in the month. He or she is counting on you for advice.
