ur government was set up with a judicial system that we all hope we can trust. Every year we are reminded just how important our justice system is. It enforces the law in accordance with a defined set of procedural rules and limitations, and if you flip through the magazine, you’ll come across attorneys in our city worth knowing—be it in criminal defense, hoping you’re never in a situation where you need representation, business law to better understand the various transactions that are in your best interest, or mediation, to offer guidance, and assist in resolving issues outside of the courtroom. These men and women represent our El Paso community and it is my hope that you take a minute to get to know each and every one of them in case the need ever arises. As we head into the season of Spring, we are greeted by a new season of sports. Graced by the local talent, we celebrate the athletes in our city, and Omar Salgado is no exception. He started his professional soccer career at the age of 15 and has brought his talents back to his hometown. He is not only able to play in front of friends and family, but represent a community that had raised him by playing as a forward with the El Paso Locomotive, who are now on their second year. As a self-propelled individual he lives a physically demanding life and represents the importance of staying active. Speaking of sports, after a career in the NFL, El Paso native Paul Smith chose to come back and make his home in the Sun City. Beyond his passion, he uses his newfound knowledge and what he learned in the pro league to bring us an improved health and performance program. As we wind down from our annual Best of The City, we encourage you to follow us on social media as we continually celebrate the best in our city.

n 2012, Paul Foster and his wife, Alejandra de la Vega
Foster, joined with the Hunt family in El Paso to form MountainStar Sports Group, a partnership focused on improving quality of life in the region and spurring economic development through sports and entertainment. As part of their venture, they founded El Paso’s very own USL team, El Paso Locomotive FC, in 2018. The El Paso Locomotive Soccer Team is a still-relatively-new addition to El Paso’s culture, but they’ve already brought a significant amount of pride and an added sense of community to sports fans, and the city as a whole. Omar Salgado, who plays as a forward, is one of the few El Paso-natives on the team. His history and experience as a pro in the sport spans over ten years already, even though he is still young at only 26-years-old, and he is an undeniably valuable asset to the team. Omar remarkably left High School at Cathedral, after spending elementary and middle school at St. Joseph’s, when he was 15 as he went professional in the sport. “I didn’t get to play at Cathedral, because I wasn’t there long enough, but I did play for El Paso Texas Fire, Premier Panthers...all these local teams around the city,” he said. Now, in the last year of his contract to El Paso’s team, he focuses on his appreciation for the city and his role in its community while anticipating what may await him next. “I left when I was 15 to pursue a long professional career, and I’m so happy to continue that coming back to my hometown. I’m honored to give back to the city that helped me grow,” he said. “My best friends are from here and we’ve all ended up coming back, so it’s great to be home.” Omar is a first-generation El Pasoan, with his mom working as an English as a Second Language teacher in Canutillo and his dad owning a business in Juarez. Omar speaks highly of his parents, and frequents their home for food and company to this day. “Since I was a little kid, I had always wanted to be a professional soccer player. My parents always pushed me towards sports, and I was good at it, so they were very excited when I went professional,” he said of the support he received throughout his being raised. Like Omar, his dad is towering—6’4” and 6’3” at their respective heights. His appreciation for them is obvious and he frequents their place, as he said, “Being back home, I go back to my parents’ house to grab some food and have tried to change their eating habits to be healthier, involving low salt and no junk food.”

Omar’s eating habits are predictably similarly healthy, and according to him, are “extremely important.” If not eating at home or his parents, “I always look for the healthiest foods around the city when I go out to eat,” he said. Fitness is, obviously, a huge part of his life and professional career, and it is of the utmost importance that he be consistent with his eating and exercise regimens. Regularly, “We train every morning from 10-12, and I usually go to the gym in the afternoons on my own.” Without going overboard in order to let his body recover, yet remaining consistent in his exercise, is key. That said, “Pre-season is when we train two to three times a day, and that lasts a month and a half long,” he said. Otherwise, his ultimate goal in these regards is to, “just try to stay healthy, recover as fast as possible from the games and be prepared for the next.” When asked of his personal greatest achievements, he said, “One of my top moments in my career was last year. Coming back home, I wanted to bring something important to the city. It was awesome to reach a final and give the city some happiness after all that happened. Winning a playoff game was an awesome feeling, and is something the city won’t forget.” He hasn’t come this far without setbacks, especially when it comes to his body. “I broke my foot four times a row, and it was a very difficult time. It www.thecitymagazineelp.com

certainly challenges you and pushes you to get better,” he said. This past season, he came out unscathed, without a single injury for the first time—”I played all 37 games,” he explained with pride. “Recovery involved hoping the foot healed by just staying off of it—the second surgery I ended up having helped my foot recover a lot better though,” he said of the multiple ordeals. That said, his biggest challenges involve the seasons being so long and taxing, “so during the season, there are always challenges with ups and downs. There are winning streaks and losing streaks and staying positive through the losing streaks is probably the most difficult part,” he said. “That’s what makes or breaks your team at the end of the day. Some of the best teams learn how to recover from bad moments and that’s what makes them great.” The El Paso Locomotive Soccer Team had its own rollercoaster of a season this past year that ultimately led to some unbelievably high moments, that Omar believes then led to what he considers a very successful season.

hat does one do after a career in one of our nation’s premier professional sports leagues? It’s a question many elite athletes struggle with, far too often failing to find the answer.
After a successful eight-year tenure in the NFL, El Paso native Paul Smith was forced to confront the prospect of life after football. Unbeknownst to him, his new interest in an obscure fitness philosophy called “CrossFit” would act as the bedrock for a rewarding second career. Paul’s love affair with the sport had started just a year earlier. “I was dealing with some injuries when I was with the Denver Broncos and was just getting tired of lifting weights,” explains the Andress High School alum. “I was surfing the internet when I came across this video of a woman doing a non-stop workout, same pace the whole 15 minutes. I was intrigued, I’d never seen anything like it before. I found out it was called CrossFit, and literally like the next week I went to get certified.” Although neither Paul nor his wife Maribel knew exactly what they would do with professional football behind them, they were certain they wanted www.thecitymagazineelp.com

James Kennedy, PLLC That Viper red muscle car you see is a 1970 Plymouth Barracuda. It’s absolutely gorgeous, blazing fast, and exceedingly rare, but what makes this Viper Barracuda so special is its distinct local character. It was commissioned by longtime El Paso resident James Kennedy, and built in Juarez, Mexico by Jesse Gonzalez of Street Toys Hot Rods—a process that took over three years. “The car was finished shortly after my father had been diagnosed with terminal cancer,” explains Mr. Kennedy. “The first time I saw the car was at SEMA with my father in Las Vegas. The car represents a dream, and the interconnection between Mexico and El Paso. It will always remind me of my dad, my mom, my wife and family, and this beautiful region we are lucky enough to call home.” Just like his car, James Kennedy is 100% local. “I moved here in 1994, right after graduating from Texas Tech Law School. Honestly, I didn’t know much about El Paso, but I was just really thankful to have a job. From the moment I moved here I realized what a fantastic place it was,” remembers Mr. Kennedy. “I love the border culture, the weather, and most of all, the people. Everyone is just so warm and welcoming. That’s why I decided to raise my family in El Paso, and that’s why I’m never going to leave.” “I’m a part of this community,” says the Board-Certified personal injury trial lawyer. “Ultimately, my clients are my neighbors and I treat them as such.” Mr. Kennedy does everything in his power to make sure his clients are fairly compensated for their injuries or for the loss of a loved one killed in an accident. “He tries his best to schedule clients for an appointment in the office or at their homes or in the hospitals if necessary the same day they contact us,” says Josephine De La Cruz Kennedy, Mr. Kennedy’s wife and El Paso native. Beyond treating his clients with dignity and respect, Mr. Kennedy represents his client’s interests in front of judges and juries on a regular basis. “I’m a trial lawyer,” he says. “In fact, I am a Board-Certified personal injury trial lawyer. I have been specializing in personal injury cases for over 25 years. I’m in the business of fighting for my clients and getting them everything they deserve. I love helping people fight the most powerful insurance companies and corporations in the world and I am not afraid to take a case to trial.”

Brian Kennedy Law Everything takes practice, including pursuing your dream. After 40 years of business experience as CEO of the El Paso Sports Commission and El Paso County Coliseum and part-owner of radio stations around the city, Brian Kennedy pursued his dream of becoming a lawyer. After decades in the world of entertainment, Kennedy brings a well-honed understanding of the unique needs of entertainers, promoters, artists and multi-party events. “I had decades of business experience before I became a lawyer. So, I look at transactions, why things work the way they do, and the law itself from a real life perspective of each parties’ needs and what they are trying to achieve.” As a solo practitioner, Kennedy practices contract negotiation, arbitration and mediation, criminal, and sports and entertainment law. Brian was raised to give back and dedicates part of his time to pro bono work, representing those without representation. “I’m proud to be a lawyer. I love helping people find solutions … mapping a way through … helping folks find the middle ground. This was a life-long dream and I’m loving every minute of it.”

John Wenke The road from Northeast El Paso, to being named a Top 50 attorney for Austin, San Antonio and El Paso combined seems unlikely. But for El Paso employment attorney John Wenke, it was the result of the values and hard work learned from his parents. John’s father served 27 years in both the Army and Navy. “He was disciplined, but not hard,” says Wenke. “Although a limited formal education, he loved to read and learned from his life experiences.
He was very kind and
tolerant of differences in others.” From his mother, John says he learned hard work and loyalty.
Raised in post-war Italy,
John’s mother spoke little English when she arrived in the U.S. Despite the hurdles that many immigrants face, Wenke states his mom was the hardest worker he’s ever known. “With her Italian temperament, I think the first words she learned in English were cuss words,” John recounts with laughter. “My work ethic and passion definitely comes from her.” “We are all a little bit of our parents, whether we like it or not,” says Wenke. “I appreciate my parents, and I give them credit for who I have become.”

The Islas Muñoz Law Firm, PLLC Shared experiences have a deep impact and create a bond—one that Pamela Munoz and Norma Islas built upon. From a very young age, both knew they wanted to be attorneys. Before forming their partnership in 2013, they met at collaborating nonprofit immigration rights organizations. Their passion for immigration was rooted in this shared experience, as well as their desire to help others achieve the “American Dream” that they are grateful to have. Norma and Pamela offer a human approach to immigration representation, and as first-generation Americans, are able to relate to their clients. Their families had to deal with what so many of their clients do. With an emphasis on deportation defense, their niche is in asylum cases. Additionally, they do business immigration and are working to cultivate a boutique immigration law firm, offering their expertise and handling an array of cases. Norma and Pamela have 34 years of combined experience and don’t shy away from complicated cases. “Our superpower is our extraordinary
determination,”
Norma states. “At the end of the day, it’s a challenging and fulfilling endeavor. For us, the important thing is the work we do and how we can help others with our skills,” they collectively say.

Daniela Labinoti Daniela Labinoti is not your typical trial advocacy attorney in El Paso— her qualifications set her apart, and her story is one of inspiration. After escaping civil war in Albania in 1997, over 22 years later, she is one of the most recognized and awarded attorneys in the city. She has been awarded Super Lawyer Texas Rising Star 2017-2019, won Top 100 Verdicts in Texas in 2016, has one of the highest employment discrimination verdicts in New Mexico, and is consistently rated in the top three employment and personal injury lawyers in El Paso. She emphasizes that, “I think our results speak higher than any award or advertisement ever could.” Also, as to discrimination and wrongful termination cases, Daniela says: “I am proud that my partner, Mr. Duke and I, go above and beyond to get clients great results.” She believes her specialization, practicing exclusively in employment and personal injury law, has honed her skills as an attorney within those fields. Her experience in overcoming hardships has proven her more than capable in helping others overcome their own legal hardships, right here in El Paso and Las Cruces. “I would call myself a lawyer with a heart,” she said. “I am blessed that I have been given the opportunity to be a warrior of justice and I hope to continue to do it for a long time.”

Law Offices of Sergio A. Saldivar To Sergio A. Saldivar, being a Criminal Defense Lawyer, is all about improving his clients’ quality of life—he says, “My job is to put my clients in a better position than when I first meet them … I focus on giving people a sense of vindication from good results.” Known— even outside of El Paso—for his aggressive DWI defense, Sergio has developed his expertise and reputation as an aggressive trial lawyer to the point of familiarity and respect with the judges and prosecutors he works alongside on a daily basis. He’s been licensed since 2001, and after spending nine years in Houston, Texas with his first practice, he decided to come back home to El Paso to open his second office where he practices in both state and federal criminal courts. “A lot of people get accused of wrongdoings and are often underrepresented, and these people that are accused of serious crimes deserve their day in court. I give them that and join them in that effort.” Emphasizing quality over quantity, Sergio understands that legal troubles can be “the most important thing going on in your life at that moment,” and as such, “I try to be, results-oriented, to allow my clients to walk away with their dignity.” As a lawyer who will be present, attentive and aggressive about your case, Sergio believes that all of this is what separates him from other law practices and allows his clients to truly walk away in a better place than they were in before.

water is warmed to body temperature, not only does it help the muscles relax, but it almost becomes unclear where one ends and the other begins. This allows you to quiet the mind and fall into a deeply relaxed state. Something a little more feasible that can be used every day is tart cherry juice. It improves recovery of isometric muscle strength after an intense workout, and the antioxidant compounds (polyphenols) help keep inflammation levels in check to help the body repair faster. The potassium that the juice contains also aids in muscle recovery. Studies show it works best when drank days before and 48 hours after intense workouts. Since the juice contains large amounts of sugars and calories, it is best to drink before or after a workout. You don’t have to be an elite athlete to benefit from these unconventional muscle recovery options. very year, families, friends, and
volunteers in the El Paso area gather
to participate in Walk For Wishes®. Walk For Wishes is an annual fundraiser for Make-A-Wish, occurring nationwide, as well as right here in our own backyard. Last year, 765 walkers, 23 teams and 16 community groups gathered for Walk For Wishes El Paso to celebrate the power of wishes come true. Among the crowd each year is the Garay family, who have been involved with Walk For Wishes since 2015. When Elijah Garay was diagnosed with a blood disorder in 2015, he and his family were introduced to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Elijah’s battle took its toll on his family. Throughout his treatment and numerous hospital stays, Elijah took comfort in watching movies from the Marvel franchise, which in turn ended up inspiring his wish to meet Captain America himself. We recently got in touch with Michael Garay, Elijah’s father, to talk with him about how Make-AWish has impacted his family, and why they stay involved year after year. Make-A-Wish: Would you describe your wish experience as “life changing”? Michael: For Judy and me, the wish experience was life changing. When Elijah’s wish was granted, it was such a beacon of hope and a marker in time where we could all exhale and actually feel like everything was going to be ok. It was a time for family.

Make-A-Wish: What made you want to stay involved and help make wishes come true for others? Michael: After our wish experience, we knew and understood the impact that the power of a granted wish could have on somebody and their family, and we wanted to do what we could to help. There are so many families that have to go through what we went through. At a time when we felt lost and alone, strangers came to us and lifted us. We want to do the same for others, whether it is helping directly or indirectly. The Garays’ help has included involvement in the annual Walk For Wishes; helping to raise money while encouraging those who are going through similar experiences. Make-A-Wish: How did you decide to get involved in Walk For Wishes? Michael: When we learned about Walk For Wishes, we were so excited at the chance to reunite with some of the people we had met along the way, and also at the chance to raise money and help grant someone else’s wish. Elijah formed such a great support team made up of friends and family that it was easy—and also a no-brainer—to get a walk team going. We started a walk team called HLH Warriors Team Elijah. We have formed that team every year since, and we will be there again this year. Make-A-Wish: What is special about Walk For Wishes? Michael: The Walk For Wishes is such a great event. It has so much support from the city and from so many different community organizations. I love how, while we are walking, the entire team is mingling with other walkers and people are so happy to help support each other, yet you know almost everybody there is walking in support of someone special in their life. Make-A-Wish: What would you say to someone thinking of getting involved in Walk For Wishes this year? Michael: If anybody is thinking of getting involved in the Walk this year, you should just do it. You will not regret the connections you will make, the people you will meet, or the memories you will carry with you for the rest of your life. At a minimum, you are directly helping to grant the wish of a child facing critical illness, and that granted wish might be what keeps the fight in that warrior’s heart alive. Walk For Wishes El Paso—with founding sponsor, The Hospitals of Providence and Providence Children’s Hospital—is a one-mile “Fun Walk” on April 18, 2020 at The Fountains at Farah. Join us to transform lives, one step at a time and one wish at a time! You will have the opportunity to meet 68
wish kids and see firsthand the impact of their wish. Activities before and after the Walk include food, live entertainment, and special guests. Start your team today at www.WalkForWishesElPaso.org.

of your routine can be a struggle. This is a challenge that can be faced with your pet. It’s easy to offer your pet a treat and cuddle time to appease them, however when they look at
you it’s often for the purpose of meaningful interaction. Animals are social creatures for the most part, and you can use that to break you out of a comfortable routine. Both you and your pet(s) benefit from getting out and in terms of being active, it doesn’t need to be anything high intensity. Regular exercise not only reduces the risk of disease but keeps you healthier, especially when paired with a healthy and conscious diet. Plus, not only will you be enjoying each other’s company, but possibly the company of others if you engage in group activities. As far as exercising goes, there are a few options that you and your furry friend can partake in. Just about any pet gets curious when they see their owner working out at

The routine may need some tweaking, but you can grab a pet’s favorite toy and get them moving with you while you squat, lunge, plank, pushup or whatever it may be. Taking the exercising outside allows for more to do, all while enjoying the fresh air. Normally, dogs are trained to stay at their owner’s side during walks but why not cut a little slack and let your pet walk you for once. It’s not unusual for dogs to get excited and want to speed up their pace, so trying to keep up with them will allow for a brisk walk or light jog. You can even try alternating both. Going on a hike can also easily suffice. Even if you don’t own a dog, they have backpacks, carrying cases and even strollers that might better suit your pet. If weather and your animal permits, you

can get in the water and a enjoy a healthy and fun activity. It’s great cardio and an allencompassing workout that cuts the risk of injury. If your pet is not fully comfortable in the water, consider getting them a life jacket to make the process a bit easier. Biking can also be an option if done so safely. Although, getting them adjusted is of the utmost importance. You can start by keeping an easy-going pace that allows for your pet to trot. Having a leash with a quick release handle might be worth looking into in case of an emergency. Something you may have also seen through social media is yoga with your companion. Whether you find a local class or try it on your own, your bond and physical ability are sure to increase. Now let’s be real, not every animal has the greatest ability to follow orders. Sometimes including your pet in your workout routine is as simple as picking them up and using them for added weight in a body weight workout. If you don’t have a pet and are still looking for some external motivation to get you moving,

Galeria Cinco Puntos provides an alternative to the deafening humdrum of mass-produced and pre-canned commercial entertainment. Yet, its importance is not just a boon to El Paso’s business community, it’s important because it provides an opportunity to enrich the cultural significance of El Paso. The soul of Galeria Cinco Puntos is its eclectic program put together by five collaborators. Together they take proposals, decide, and help set up the non-stop stream of local artists that have been featured. Galeria is not just a boon to El Paso’s businesses, it enriches the heartbeat of El Paso. Very much for the people, by the people kind of place. And that is a good thing. This month they are featuring the work of Cleo Arevalo and Victor Casas. If you want to be considered next, then reach out to them with a proposal @galericacincopuntos.

High Intensity Interval Training | By: TRAINER KAI MALACHI, B.S., M.S., CPT Owner of TKFit |
H.I.I.T. is a superior fat burning workout and because it is performed at each individual’s ability it is a good choice for almost everyone. Here are five excellent reasons you should try a H.I.I.T. session today.
W
1. A H.I.I.T. workout session is only 30 minutes long, that’s only 2 percent of your day! e all know that person. The one who does a spin class every morning before biking to work, fits in a Zumba or yoga class at
lunch, then bikes home to do a two-mile run. We grudgingly admit
we need to get fit but there’s no way we can go to those lengths to get there. Every morning we have endless to do lists to finish, lunches to pack and kids to drop off before we even get to work. Lunch is reserved for errands and appointments, not to mention catching up with friends or just taking a breath. After work? Forget about it! Between ferrying kids to soccer, dance, and karate, we’re cooking dinner, doing laundry, attending PTA, and checking homework. There’s hardly time to connect with our loved ones let alone the gym. There is no question that we need to be healthy and fit to keep up with the family, maintain some semblance of a social life, achieve work/life balance, and be a happy well-adjusted human being. But realistically, who has two or three extra hours a day to exercise? Is there a way for a normal human being to get fit? Enter H.I.I.T (High Intensity Interval Training). H.I.I.T. is a short, thirty-minute fat burning workout regimen that uniquely utilizes the aerobic and anaerobic fuel systems of the body to burn fat during, as well as long after, the workout itself. The fat burning effect of a well-designed H.I.I.T. workout can last up to 48 hours after only a thirty-minute session! How is this possible? First developed by exercise scientists for the military, H.I.I.T. uses a science-based approach to fitness. H.I.I.T. creates a high demand for energy by requiring the body to work at a high intensity for 30-60 seconds followed by a brief rest then returning to high intensity and so on. During a H.I.I.T. workout, the brief burst of high intensity exercise places a high demand for energy on your anaerobic cycle which supports conditioning, muscle strengthening, and cardiopulmonary health. The brief rest forces the body into an aerobic cycle which supports burning calories, endurance, and movement.
2. Maintaining a regular H.I.I.T. workout regimen four to five days a week: - increases metabolism - targets and burns belly fat - increases insulin sensitivity and glucose regulation (helping to improve/prevent diabetes) - improves mood by releasing endorphins 3. H.I.I.T. has been proven to increase human growth hormone production during workouts. The anti-aging benefits of HGH are well documented. 4. H.I.I.T. results in a significantly lower incidence of injury when compared to traditional forms of exercise and workouts. Every 30-minute workout includes warm-up and cool-down stretches and exercises. 5. Almost everyone can reap the benefits of H.I.I.T., regardless of experience, training, fitness level, gender, race, or age. It works! It really works and it works fast. H.I.I.T. workouts, as all exercise regimens, are best undertaken with the supervision of a health or fitness professional and just might be the fitness plan that will change your life.

LANEIGE Lip Sleeping Mask $20
Sephora.com
As it goes, lips have a lesser amount of oil glands which means they lack the protective benefits of the natural oils that also help keep lips moisturized. I personally never go to bed without properly hydrating my lips. It allows them the time to properly soak up the product and helps lock in moisture while you sleep to leave your lips looking luscious. The formula is thick and falls in the spectrum between a balm and cream with active ingredients to help penetrate deeper. A little goes a long way and will definitely last you for quite a while.
Aquaphor Lip Repair $3.99
Ulta.coM
Before I even start getting ready in the morning or for a night out, I always prep my lips. I apply a bit of Aquaphor so I have a smooth base to work off of, especially if I forget to use a lip sleeping mask before going to bed. It can also be used to rehydrate lips throughout the day if lips become dry from wearing a matte or liquid lip. It even works for a day that you might be feeling a more natural look. You can swipe some of this on and head out to start the day. It’s small enough to carry with you, and if I’m being honest, I have one in every one of my purses so I’m never without one. It might not have any of the glamour but it has all the functionality.
Sun Bum Sunscreen Lip Balm SPF 30 $3.99
Ulta.coM
We hear it over and over again how sun protection is important to keeping our skin looking young and healthy. The thing is we often forget that this applies to our lips as well! Since we have no sun filtering on the lips it’s crucial to protect the delicate skin. This lip balm not only offers a sun protection factor of 30 but it also has Aloe and Vitamin E to keep your pout moisturized all day. Plus, the cocoa butter has emollient properties with helps retain moisture and slow signs of aging and fine lines. The delightful flavors are just a bonus!
Jeffree Star Velour Lip Scrub $12
JeffreeStarCosmetics.com
Although winter is the most common time for chapped lips, it isn’t the only season that it occurs. Removing the dead skin not only brings out a fresh layer but helps to prevent cracked lips. The goal is to have softer, smoother lips, and if they’re more kissable then that’s just a bonus! Although there are plenty of lip scrubs on the market, I’m a sucker for Jeffree Star’s Velour Lip Scrub. Not only are they vegan and cruelty free but they are delicious. After rubbing the scrub around in circular motions, you can either wipe it off or lick off the off excess since it’s edible! Plus, there are plenty of flavors to choose from. www.thecitymagazineelp.com
