This brings us to his specialty for treating craniosynostosis, and the innovative minimally-invasive surgeries that he pioneered to treat infants with this congenital condition. As explained, the skull is comprised of several plates of bone that are separated by sutures, or fibrous joints, found between the bony plates in the head. As an infant grows, the sutures close and the bones fuse, forming a solid piece of bone. Craniosynostosis occurs when one or more of the sutures close too early, leading to problems with normal brain and skull growth. This premature closing also causes pressure to build inside of the head, and the skull to dramatically change in size and appearance.

orn and raised in the southwestern enclave of El Paso, Texas, Doris Hagans Schwartz grew up on the west side of town, the youngest of three children and the daughter of educators. Her father was a decorated retired military officer who later went on to become a

professor, and her mother had a lengthy tenure at El Paso High that spanned over 40 years. Doris graduated from the rivaling High School of Coronado, attended UT Austin for her basics then transferred back to El Paso, where she earned a degree in business and accounting from UTEP. Shortly thereafter, Doris started a family of her own and began her professional career as an accountant with KPMG, a Big Four Accounting firm. It was during her time with the firm that the foundation was laid for what was to become a thriving career as a businesswoman and entrepreneur.

Her border experience moved her to San Diego in her late 20s where she started a firm, known as Schwartz and Associations, Inc.—which for 23 years specialized in debt and equity restructuring and pension fund investment to Mexican Industrial and Housing developers. Together, with Goldman Sachs, they launched the first Mexico Housing IPO. During those ensuing years as an executive, Doris never lost contact with her hometown. Since her mother’s retirement, return trips home were a frequent part of her agenda. At one point, however, when her mother turned 80, it was determined that it was time to move Grandma to San Diego and into the family home. For the next 15 years, Doris found that she had the personal task of assisting her mother with the sending of countless gifts and cards to all of the 15 grandchildren and great grandchildren. Holidays and birthdays meant at least 30 gifts and cards each year. A daunting task to say the least!

We were fortunate enough to be able to adopt her. Suzie Q was transported to Albuquerque, NM where she stayed with a foster family, a US Pilot in the Air Force who loves Greyhounds and fosters many. I picked her up in March of 2014 and she’s been such a loving pet. She had many health problems when we first got her, but with all the help from our Veterinarians she came around and is a healthy girl. She is the most gentle dog and considering what she came from, she has completely found love to give and receive. She’s the head of our pet household along with two other rescues, Polly & Tillie, who are very small pups. We have been so blessed with this gentle giant.

To a meerkat, nothing quite says “romantic dinner” like crunchy, freeze-dried Madagascar hissing cockroaches.

For the zoo’s “Quit Bugging Me” promotion, the public was asked to christen a cockroach with the name of a former significant other so that the insect could be eaten by either a meerkat, macaque, or any other resident that may enjoy an extra snack. A tiny

The promotion garnered attention from news stations across the country, The BBC, and was even deemed notable enough to be mentioned on NBC’s Saturday Night Live during their “Weekend Update” skit. Host, Colin Jost, commenting, “yeah, that’ll show them,” in reference to the notion of people seeing this as anything more than a goof. The writers over at SNL may have made a valid point in their criticism but they clearly did not see the effect it had on the public.

Each submission came with an outpouring of gratitude. People thanked zoo staff for giving them catharsis, a place to vent. While some laughed this idea off, others found a platform, as many messages read, that gave them some closure. Valentine’s day is supposed to bring people together; The El Paso Zoo has always aimed to bring the public closer to wildlife and this past February the Zoo’s Cockroach Crew accomplished both.

n a lot of ways Evelyn Muro is a typical 25-year-old woman. She works hard during the week, putting in long hours at the clothing store she

manages while also taking care of her seven year-old daughter. In her free time—what little of it exists—the young Juárense enjoys eating out with her friends and grabbing drinks at her favorite bar, La Cervecería 19. So why then, you may be asking yourselves, is Evelyn Muro appearing in this magazine?

Behind the facade, Evelyn is anything but normal—she’s a mini-celebrity. Her Instagram account, @evelyn_muroo, boasts a whopping 10.1 thousand followers at the time this story is being written.

Why is a group of people big enough to populate all of San Elizario so interested in Evelyn? It turns out she doesn’t even know herself: “I’m really not sure why my Instagram is so popular… I never even set out to be an influencer or anything,” she explains with a flawless American accent she picked up as a kid living in Arkansas.

Without any way of reading her followers’ brains, one can only speculate as to why Evelyn has found so much success on social media. Her content, which she uploads consistently, is fun and silly. She films herself singing pop songs

Most people get a bewildered look on their face at the very mention of the word “colonic,” reserving it for that dreaded colonoscopy that is bound to be recommended at some point.

t’s hard to forget the driveway or the backyard at La Reggia,

but the house with an outrageous total of 1200 rooms, really

takes the cake. So, if you’re planning a trip to Rome, Naples or

Sorrento, Italy, may I please recommend a detour to Caserta, where you’ll find one of Europe’s most impressive Royal Residences.

The scale of this property is simply overwhelming. The Palace itself exceeds one-third of a square mile in dimension. Think about that for a moment, it’s quite a floorplan, especially when you consider that it’s five stories high!

A close look at the 11-acre lot reveals impeccably manicured gardens, a chain of pools and elaborate fountains, complemented with ornate statuary. Guests have the option to board a bus for a three-kilometer drive to the waterfall and Fountain of Venus at the back of the property.

We were amazed by the luscious park grounds along the way. In fact, we wished we’d spent more time in the breathtaking English Garden, which is one of the lushest and oldest dedicated garden settings in the world.

As difficult as it was to leave the relaxing outdoors where cool green grasses and welcoming shade enveloped us in peaceful tranquility–the Palace was waiting. Inside, we discovered the exceptional collections in La Reggia’s Museum, added after the Palace was abandoned by the patrimony of the Crown of the Royal House of Savoy, in 1919.

But honestly, even without the Museum, this astounding edifice is well worth the trip! It is a classic example of Italian Baroque architecture, commissioned

by Carlo di Borbone (House of Bourbon and Two Sicilies), in 1750. The first stone was laid January 20,

love being reminded that the simplest things are usually the best. Access to the freshest ingredients doesn’t hurt either, but we do what we can. When I’m overthinking a recipe, I always remember how great Greek food is.

The food was a huge highlight while my time was spent there, and a little really went a long way in their cuisine. This is what breakfast in Mykonos looked like for me and I’m excited to share it, especially for how easy it is. Tapenade is a mixture of olives, garlic, parsley, and oil. There’s a ton of different recipes for different additives and flavorings, but I’ll be adding a small number of walnuts to really bring a mature and earthy tone to the tartness of feta. Fresh tomatoes and a heavy pinch of salt really balance this whole sandwich out. It’s light but filling and one of my favorite breakfasts. Spare no expense with your baguette, the freshest you can get from the best bakery you know is what I’d recommend. It’s a nice change of pace from

While oven heats, pulse the olives, garlic, walnuts, honey, and parsley in a food processor.
