prestigious scholarly journals, Dr. Jimenez has also built an equally solid foundation in clinical practice as a visionary pediatric neurosurgeon. This brings us to his specialty for treating craniosynostosis, and the innovative minimally-invasive surgeries that he pioneered to treat infants with this congenital condition. As explained, the skull is comprised of several plates of bone that are separated by sutures, or fibrous joints, found between the bony plates in the head. As an infant grows, the sutures close and the bones fuse, forming a solid piece of bone. Craniosynostosis occurs when one or more of the sutures close too early, leading to problems with normal brain and skull growth. This premature closing also causes pressure to build inside of the head, and the skull to dramatically change in size and appearance.

Brightest Lights
by Lane 8
As an artist who appeals to the sentiments of his listeners, Lane 8’s third studio album is no exception. With the chord progressions, melodies and musical motifs, you are sure to be entranced.
Blinding Lights by The Weeknd Back with his fourth studio album, The Weeknd leaves the introspection of “My Dear Melancholy” behind, as the bass and synth-driven tunes make for a brighter sound. There is no denying this album is destined for success, especially with two strong singles, released back in November.
When We Stay Alive by Poliça Poliça stays true to their slower new wave sound, with the release of their first solo album in three years. The album carries a lightness to it as lead singer, Channy Leaneagh, captivates you with her ethereal voice.
Shake the Snow Globe by Russ This new album encapsulates the essence of driving around with friends, as the sound envelopes the car. With a consistent toned-down feel-good vibe, Russ is a force to be reckoned with as an artist who writes and produces all his songs.

military and available to patients right here in El Paso. Nerve injuries come from all over—acute injuries, like those due to trauma like broken bones, deep cuts, traction injuries, firearm injuries, crushing injuries, blunt trauma or animal bites; Iatrogenic injuries from surgeries, i.e. accidentally crushing the nerve under a bone plate; and the surgical excision of nerves during tumor removal or other surgical procedures. They can also be due to chronic injuries—like neuromas, the dreaded “pinched nerve,” or entrapment neuropathies In the past, the treatment and restoration of peripheral nerve injuries were difficult, and only limited options were available. Surgeons often didn’t treat, and when they did, they had to perform a direct neurorrhaphy—the surgical suturing of a divided nerve—or resort to methods like amputations to address such injuries. The fading gold standard for nerve repair is autograft (a patient’s native tissue), and it has its limitations. The procedure requires time to harvest and prepare the graft which means more time in the operating room, more anesthesia, more physician cost. Also, all autograft harvest sites are themselves, surgical nerve injuries. While the

Dr. Martha Manquero-Butler As a young medical student in Mexico, Dr. Martha Manquero-Butler, a family medicine physician trained at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso, was inspired by what science can do for the human being. Focusing on geriatric care for almost 20 years, started her private practice, New Light Primary Care, in 2010. Her practice encompasses nursing home care, hospital, clinic, and house calls to over 850 home-bound patients. Implementing faith into her practice is important. “There is no way my team could have gone this far without our faith in God. Our focus is the frail people in our community. Going back to the basics of care and seeing the patient as a whole, acknowledging a soul in their frail body, makes you feel that it is always an extraordinary time to be in the field of medicine and help in any way you can. We have to remember that the way we feel inside also affects our health,” Martha explains. Dr. Manquero-Butler is going above and beyond to continue to serve the community, and working tirelessly, Martha is dividing her practice and turning the home-bound portion into a nonprofit—San Jose Moscati Medical Home, and will focus on continuing to provide care in the comfort of the patient’s home without worrying about the ability to pay and expand services not covered by insurances. She exemplifies this will be a way of community helping community. Referrals come from hospitals, nursing homes, home health agencies, and word of mouth. “Our team feels blessed to help our community and that’s what it’s all about. With God all things are possible,” Martha says.

orn and raised in the southwestern enclave of El Paso, Texas, Doris Hagans Schwartz grew up on the west side of town, the youngest of three children and the daughter of educators. Her father was a decorated retired military officer who later went on to become a
professor, and her mother had a lengthy tenure at El Paso High that spanned over 40 years. Doris graduated from the rivaling High School of Coronado, attended UT Austin for her basics then transferred back to El Paso, where she earned a degree in business and accounting from UTEP. Shortly thereafter, Doris started a family of her own and began her professional career as an accountant with KPMG, a Big Four Accounting firm. It was during her time with the firm that the foundation was laid for what was to become a thriving career as a businesswoman and entrepreneur. Her border experience moved her to San Diego in her late 20s where she started a firm, known as Schwartz and Associations, Inc.—which for 23 years specialized in debt and equity restructuring and pension fund investment to Mexican Industrial and Housing developers. Together, with Goldman Sachs, they launched the first Mexico Housing IPO. During those ensuing years as an executive, Doris never lost contact with her hometown. Since her mother’s retirement, return trips home were a frequent part of her agenda. At one point, however, when her mother turned 80, it was determined that it was time to move Grandma to San Diego and into the family home. For the next 15 years, Doris found that she had the personal task of assisting her mother with the sending of countless gifts and cards to all of the 15 grandchildren and great grandchildren. Holidays and birthdays meant at least 30 gifts and cards each year. A daunting task to say the least! During this time, Doris thought, “Wouldn’t life be so much easier if there was a way to electronically plan and execute all of this gift giving? It would be so easy,” she thought, “if in one day you can schedule the delivery of personalized

One of the main diagnostic modalities include the digital rectal examination (DRE). Though uncomfortable, the exam is an integral part of a routine physical in older men, especially when BPH is suspected. Other diagnostic tests include a complete analysis of urine and evaluation of kidney function. One test that is worth mentioning here is the prostate-specific antigen (PSA). It is important to note that BPH does not cause prostate cancer. However, men at risk for BPH are also at risk for prostate cancer and should be screened accordingly. Unfortunately, the screening

PET OF THE
MONTH
TCM Pet of the Month highlights our readers’ best friends!
Suzie Q
Owners: Carrie & Doak Hoover Suzie Q was found running free in Lubbock, TX in 2014. We were fortunate enough to be able to adopt her. Suzie Q was transported to Albuquerque, NM where she stayed with a foster family, a US Pilot in the Air Force who loves Greyhounds and fosters many. I picked her up in March of 2014 and she’s been such a loving pet. She had many health problems when we first got her, but with all the help from our Veterinarians she came around and is a healthy girl. She is the most gentle dog and considering what she came from, she has completely found love to give and receive. She’s the head of our pet household along with two other rescues, Polly & Tillie, who are very small pups. We have been so blessed with this gentle giant. Is your pet TCM’s next Pet of the Month? his past February The El Paso Zoo decided
to take a new approach to celebrating
Valentine’s Day. They decided to do away with
the traditional, clichéd flowers, balloons and
candy in favor of a gift better suited to their animals, as well to some of the broken hearts of the world. To a meerkat, nothing quite says “romantic dinner” like crunchy, freeze-dried Madagascar hissing cockroaches. For the zoo’s “Quit Bugging Me” promotion, the public was asked to christen a cockroach with the name of a former significant other so that the insect could be eaten by either a meerkat, macaque, or any other resident that may enjoy an extra snack. bit petty but tons of fun; the brainchild of the zoo’s event coordinator and self-proclaimed “cockroach queen,” Sarah Borrego turned a silly idea into a great way for these animals to receive some extra enrichment; a tasty bonus to accompany their normal diet. The roach does not simply act as a treat but offers animals a bit of a challenge in terms of getting through the tough outer exterior. Zoo animals are regularly given enrichment to entertain and enhance their stays at the

diets in containers that require animals to put in more effort to receive their meal, or even hide portions around an exhibit. This ensures the animal, whether it be an Asian elephant or a meerkat, are mentally and physically stimulated. However, there is a limit to the amount of roaches that even a hungry mob of meerkats can consume. Initially zoo staff expected a handful of responses; a few folks that wanted to join in on the gag. Instead, the zoo’s inbox was swarmed with submissions of names belonging to ex-boyfriends, girlfriends, and anybody that left a bad taste in someone else’s mouth. Responses flooded in immediately and not just from El Paso. Over 6,000 names from across North America, Australia, South Africa, Spain and all over the United Kingdom were given so that cockroaches could be

used as surrogates for a particularly bad ex. The promotion garnered attention from news stations across the country, The BBC, and was even deemed notable enough to be mentioned on NBC’s Saturday Night Live during their “Weekend Update” skit. Host, Colin Jost, commenting, “yeah, that’ll show them,” in reference to the notion of people seeing this as anything more than a goof. The writers over at SNL may have made a valid point in their criticism but they clearly did not see the effect it had on the public. Each submission came with an outpouring of gratitude. People thanked zoo staff for giving them catharsis, a place to vent. While some laughed this idea off, others found a platform, as many messages read, that gave them some closure. Valentine’s day is supposed to bring people together; The El Paso Zoo has always aimed to bring the public closer to wildlife and this past February the Zoo’s Cockroach Crew accomplished both.

n a lot of ways Evelyn Muro is a typical 25-year-old woman. She works hard during the week, putting in long hours at the clothing store she
manages while also taking care of her seven year-old daughter. In her free time—what little of it exists—the young Juárense enjoys eating out with her friends and grabbing drinks at her favorite bar, La Cervecería 19. So why then, you may be asking yourselves, is Evelyn Muro appearing in this magazine? Behind the facade, Evelyn is anything but normal—she’s a mini-celebrity. Her Instagram account, @evelyn_muroo, boasts a whopping 10.1 thousand followers at the time this story is being written. Why is a group of people big enough to populate all of San Elizario so interested in Evelyn? It turns out she doesn’t even know herself: “I’m really not sure why my Instagram is so popular… I never even set out to be an influencer or anything,” she explains with a flawless American accent she picked up as a kid living in Arkansas. Without any way of reading her followers’ brains, one can only speculate as to why Evelyn has found so much success on social media. Her content, which she uploads consistently, is fun and silly. She films herself singing pop songs
in the mirror before going to bed and documents workplace pranks between her colleagues. It also probably doesn’t hurt that she’s easy on the eyes. Evelyn enjoys the Instagram fame, but she doesn’t let it consume her. Asked whether she’s proud of her influencer status, Evelyn seemed intent on recognizing its frivolity in the grand scheme of things, saying: “Instagram is fun. But what I’m really proud of is the fact that I’m a young single mom and completely independent. I take care of my daughter and pay all the bills myself.”

Ruben was able to enjoy stunning sunset views while dining on fresh seafood on the ship The Majestic, and once the sun went down, fireworks lit up the night sky. The Benefits of
Colonics | By: BIANCA GARCIA |
Most people get a bewildered look on their face at the very mention of the word “colonic,” reserving it for that dreaded colonoscopy that is bound to be recommended at some point. But what if I told you that cleansing your colon is actually a tool for healing hormones, overall good health and avoiding countless health issues? You might be wondering why your colon would need help eliminating in the first place, because that is what it’s meant to do. With modern living, there are a million foreign substances in our food, the air we breathe and the water we drink and shower in. How do you know if you “need” a colonic? Some symptoms to consider are: • Low energy
• Depression
• Digestion issues
• Acne
• Moodiness
• Hormone issues
• Foggy brain
• Candida
The list goes on… Did you realize that even mood issues could be signs that colon cleansing is needed? Recent research has shown that people with a healthy colon generally have more balanced moods, while people with an unhealthy colon were generally showing the symptoms listed above. If you are experiencing some of these symptoms, it could be because your colon needs a little assistance. That leads us to, “What exactly is a colonic?” A colonic is when there is a continuous flow of water into your colon to rehydrate old waste so that it can flow out. This is typically done by a professional via insertion of a tube into your rectum (there is no way to put that delicately... I tried!). You might be wondering what causes issues in your colon in the first place. They’re the usual suspects: • Stress
• Lack of fresh air
• Dairy (especially cow dairy) • Poor food combining • Processed sugar
• Lack of quality sleep
Your first colonics might be awkward for you. I say “for you” because for the therapist, it’s just another day at the office. A good therapist will be sensitive to it being a new experience 78

1 Malin + Goetz | Eucalyptus Deodorant I admit, I don’t normally wear deodorant. Crazy notion, but I don’t need it—before I see the pitchforks come after me and my scent-less pits. I will say this: I fully stand behind certain classic rituals of men’s grooming, deodorant being one of them. So, out of solidarity for those who aren’t fortunate enough to not wince at the slightest whiff of their underarm, I offer you this. Formulated for sensitive skin, the natural eucalyptus fragrance powers through the daily motions, as well as workouts. Keeping you fresh and without having to worry about aluminum or any other additives.

2 Jack Henry | Face Toner A good and simple facial toner is the little known step to maintaining a fresh and balanced complexion throughout the day. It can pick you up after a long day, facilitate the application of moisturizers, as well as help remove any impurities that might have collected on your face throughout the day—for a fuss-free experience. Jack Henry has developed a simple to carry and use spray, infused with blood orange and lavender, so you can refresh your face and your mood whenever you feel like it.

3 Ouidad | Leave-in Conditioner As a means of holding myself accountable, I’m putting it into writing that I am (for the third year in a row), promising to grow my hair out all the way until summer. Accordingly, I’ve had to make some adjustments to my daily hair routine, which includes minimal to none blow-drying, no heavy products to force my hair into a style, and being okay with allowing my hair to do whatever the hell it wants. In order to help my locks achieve their full natural potential, I’ve enlisted the help of this lightweight leave-in conditioner, which I use only so my hair has something to hold on to, and feed off throughout the day—in order to avoid an unruly and shapeless look.

t’s hard to forget the driveway or the backyard at La Reggia,
but the house with an outrageous total of 1200 rooms, really
takes the cake. So, if you’re planning a trip to Rome, Naples or
Sorrento, Italy, may I please recommend a detour to Caserta, where you’ll find one of Europe’s most impressive Royal Residences. The scale of this property is simply overwhelming. The Palace itself exceeds one-third of a square mile in dimension. Think about that for a moment, it’s quite a floorplan, especially when you consider that it’s five stories high!

A close look at the 11-acre lot reveals impeccably manicured gardens, a chain of pools and elaborate fountains, complemented with ornate statuary. Guests have the option to board a bus for a three-kilometer drive to the waterfall and Fountain of Venus at the back of the property. We were amazed by the luscious park grounds along the way. In fact, we wished we’d spent more time in the breathtaking English Garden, which is one of the lushest and oldest dedicated garden settings in the world. As difficult as it was to leave the relaxing outdoors where cool green grasses and welcoming shade enveloped us in peaceful tranquility–the Palace was waiting. Inside, we discovered the exceptional collections in La Reggia’s Museum, added after the Palace was abandoned by the patrimony of the Crown of the Royal House of Savoy, in 1919. But honestly, even without the Museum, this astounding edifice is well worth the trip! It is a classic example of Italian Baroque architecture, commissioned by Carlo di Borbone (House of Bourbon and Two Sicilies), in 1750. The first stone was laid January 20,

of Architectural Design until this project was finally completed in the 1800s. Interestingly, Charles of Bourbon left Naples and his palatial legacy for Madrid in 1759 and eventually died as the King of Spain, in spite of his association with the new and autonomous Kingdom of Naples. Adult admission to the Royal House and Grounds costs 15 Euros. We drove south from Rome, arrived at noon, took a break for lunch and afternoon drinks, and stayed until closing time at 7:00. We did not rush, but we were never bored. You might think that any given Royal Palace looks a lot like another, but Caserta was a unique delight of grandiose proportion.

love being reminded that the simplest things are usually the best. Access to the freshest ingredients doesn’t hurt either, but we do what we can. When I’m overthinking a recipe, I always remember how great Greek food is.
The food was a huge highlight while my time was spent there, and a little really went a long way in their cuisine. This is what breakfast in Mykonos looked like for me and I’m excited to share it, especially for how easy it is. Tapenade is a mixture of olives, garlic, parsley, and oil. There’s a ton of different recipes for different additives and flavorings, but I’ll be adding a small number of walnuts to really bring a mature and earthy tone to the tartness of feta. Fresh tomatoes and a heavy pinch of salt really balance this whole sandwich out. It’s light but filling and one of my favorite breakfasts. PCA CHEMICAL PEELS ARE USED TO IMPROVE TONE, TEXTURE, FINE LINES AND WRINKLES, BREAKOUTS AND DARK SPOTS. These exfoliation treatments penetrate the stratum corneum, outer layer of the skin, to aid in the nourishment of the deeper levels of the skin, the epidermis and dermis.

SKINCARE ROUTINES SHOULD SHIFT GEARS FOR DRY, WINTER WEATHER | By: SOUTHWEST PLASTIC SURGERY |
As the seasons start to change, we find ourselves spending less time sunbathing outdoors and more time bundled up inside with the heat turned on. The shift in temperatures and weather tend to lead to dry, cracked, dehydrated skin that lasts all the way through to spring.
SWITCH OUT PRODUCTS TO KEEP SKIN SOFT Fortunately, a great winter skincare routine can minimize the impact of harsh weather on your face. Switching to a non-drying cleanser and daily moisturizer keeps skin hydrated as much as possible. For example, products like TNS Ceramide, Dermal Repair, TNS Eye Repair, SC Triple Lipid, ZO Renewal Creme and HA5 use specific ingredients that help to lock moisture into your skin for longer periods of time. It’s best to start using them as soon as the weather starts to

change, so that your skin is less in “shock” and the dryness can be prevented before it starts.
GET A PROFESSIONAL HYDRATION TREATMENT AND FACIAL Maybe you got a late start or your hydration needs an extra boost. The Hydrafacial is an excellent way to professionally—and gently—helps remove and exfoliate dead skin cells, helping the skin absorb products more effectively. One way to increase hydration in the winter, is to have your skin care provider add a TNS hydrating specialty mask to your customized

HydraFacial treatment.
TIME YOUR SKIN PEELS PROPERLY Chemical peels are generally more common in the winter months, because people spend less time outdoors. In the summer, a skin peel can make your face sensitive or irritated for normal

outside activities. But in cold weather, we’re generally in the sun for shorter amounts of time. The SkinMedica Chemical Peel is available in three different levels: The Superficial Event peel, which provides radiant skin for next-day activities; The Medium Skin Imperfection peel for age spots, mild acne, and hyper pigmentation; and The Vitalize Peel for severe skin imperfections, acne scarring, and moderate lines or wrinkles. Consider indulging in the latest technology offering minimally invasive skin and tissue remodeling: Morpheus 8, targeting deep layers of skin and remodeling collagen.
SEE THE LIGHT WITH A PHOTOFACIAL BBL, or broad band light, is perfect for effectively treating sun spots and redness left over from your summertime activities. Plus, there isn’t any downtime after the procedure. PhotoFacials are also effective at reducing the appearance of large pores, while plumping collagen fibers throughout the face. Get maximum effects by combining your BBL procedure with a HydraFacial or micro-needling once a month throughout the season. 96

A PicoFacial is another type of light therapy that improves sun damage and reduces the appearance of age spots/freckling for a more even, smoother winter skin tone. Some people find that it also helps with fine lines and acne scars. However, you need to plan ahead so that you can spend a couple of days recovering from any irritation before heading back to the office.
WHERE DO I START? A great skin care routine and professional treatments keep your skin glowing all winter long, so that you can use all of your favorite cosmetic products and combat the side-effects of the cold, dry weather. Talk to your skin care or cosmetic professional to tailor a customized routine that will leave your face feeling rejuvenated and smooth all winter long!
