The centre’s participants are thrilled to be back home.

FOLLOWING a complete internal rebuild, the renovated Youth Arts & Recreation Centre (ARC) at 44 Collins Street is open again for Hobart’s youth community.

Closing its doors in May 2018 due to flood damage was a hard time for the centre’s team.

The weather event significantly impacted the building, requiring the demolition of internal walls, the music and art studios, kitchen, skate ramp, stage and reception area.

Most of the furniture, equipment and artwork held within the centre was contaminated and had to be removed.

The challenge was approached as an opportunity to redesign the space and the renovated

centre now features modern facilities that reflect the needs of young people.

“There’s now a café area where young people can enjoy a quiet coffee in a contemporary space that’s a bit separate to the rest of the venue,” Community, Culture and Events Committee chair Cr Bill Harvey said.

“It will also be the new hub for Youth ARC’s food program, which brings young people and volunteers together to cook meals.

“There’s all new furniture and equipment ready for use.

“Whether you’re into gaming, music, sport, art or just hanging out with your friends in a relaxed space, the centre provides young people with a space to

call their own.”

In recognition of a new era for Youth ARC, a mural is currently being created by local artist Jamin, who will mentor aspiring young artists through the centre.

“The centre was full of art created by young people, so the addition of this mural is quite symbolic,” Cr Harvey said.

The drop-in centre operates Tuesday to Friday from 3pm until 6pm, with dance, music and art workshops held every week.

The space has facilities for gaming, eight-ball, table tennis, cooking, dance, basketball and other sports, and more.

It is free for all young people aged 12 to 25.

Creating a sustainable future Hobart is one of Australia’s most bushfire-prone cities

THE City of Hobart started its new kerbside food organics and garden organics (FOGO) service last month.

Hobart residents are the first in southern Tasmania who can now add food and other organics to their existing green waste bins for processing into quality compost.

“The introduction of a FOGO collection is a major milestone in our city’s war on waste and our goal to achieve zero waste to landfill by 2030,” Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said.

Food waste makes up more than half of household general waste, with the average household contributing more than 200 kilograms of food to landfill each year.

“The FOGO service collects food waste and other organic materials for composting, removing these items from landfill and providing a direct benefit to our environment.”

The new service is expected to divert up to 3,200 tonnes of food waste from landfill annually.

SUMMER is the best time for beach getaways and young Tasmanians with mobility

restrictions can take part in swimming, catching waves, beach runs and exercises via the Starfish Nipper Program, facilitated by Surf Life Saving Tasmania (SLST).

As part of the program, on Tuesday 21 January, volunteers will be on hand at Long Beach in Sandy Bay to work one-on-one with children and young adults with a disability.

Participants will enhance their lifesaving skills, including water familiarisation, beach safety, catching waves, performing rescues and sand activities.

“At Surf Life Saving Tasmania we want to give everyone the ability to access and enjoy the beach by bringing down barriers and offering support to those people with a disability who want to access the beach so that it is a safe and happy place

for all,” training and community programs manager Ondine Adey said.

“The program is designed to suit each participant’s needs and is one of many community events held to improve access to beach activities for people in the community and promote inclusiveness and diversity in our water safety events around Tasmania.”

For people who have trouble getting around on sand or accessing the water, the City of Hobart and SLST offer free beach wheelchairs at Long Beach, Sandy Bay, Monday to Friday, 9am–4.30pm.

MIRROR GIVES DANCERS SPACE TO REFLECT ALL dancers of Hobart now have a great public practice space to rehearse their performances.

A large mirror was installed on the outside of the Waterside Pavilion in Mawson Place in response to local K-Pop dancers seeking out reflective surfaces (such as shop windows) as makeshift mirrors.

“We want Hobart to be recognised as a city that encourages and supports creative expression,” Community Culture and Events Committee chair Cr Bill Harvey said.

“The feedback we’ve had so far has been fantastic.

“We hope it will inspire dancers of all genres to bring their rehearsals outdoors to enjoy our wonderful waterfront and add to the vibrancy of the space.”

Delving into the realm of ‘Slow TV’: from the macro to the micro and amateur content-makers.

New Soapbox exhibition: meditations on muwinina THE City’s Soapbox billboards present a new artwork from an ongoing creative and conceptual writing collaboration between trawlwoolway family members Neika Lehman and Lauren Gower, with design by artist Rosie Isaac.

In meditations on muwinina, the artists have used the concept of ‘family’ as a starting point for conversations around family, memory, country and the role of art to present writing about lutruwita/Tasmania.

“We wanted to present Aboriginal conceptions of nipaluna/Hobart, addressing muwinina country and all its relations – mountain, animals, plants – as the caregivers to our

lives,” artist Neika Lehman said.

“We wanted to respond to the ongoing sovereignty of the land and its custodians, to create an old and new portrait of the land where contemporary nipaluna/Hobart is situated.

“We hope the Soapboxes can be a starting point for further conversations not only between locals, but also for tourists and other visitors.”

VAN DIEMEN’S BAND CONCERTS TO CELEBRATE THE TOWN HALL PIPE ORGAN’S ANNIVERSARY THE City of Hobart and the renowned Van Diemen’s Band present a series of lunchtime concerts to be held in the Hobart Town Hall in the lead up to the 150th anniversary of the building’s pipe organ.

The hall’s pipe organ, which was installed in 1870 and features 1926 pipes, will be played during some of the concerts.

The 45-minute concerts will run from 11 February to 17 March 2020, bringing to the community

an exciting repertoire of musical performances by world-class musicians.

Audiences in the magnificent 19th century auditorium of the Hobart Town Hall will enjoy contemporary folk music, Turkish percussion and baroque music on original instruments.
