YOUTH ARC IS BACK HOME

Aboriginal artwork expresses connectivity and belonging From front page

“I hope that Feeling the Country will be a proud centrepiece and will help to build a committed and productive relationship with Tasmanian Aboriginal people.” Head to the Elizabeth Mall to have a look at the artwork and have a chat to our friendly team of experienced Tasmanian Travel and Information Centre officers at the information hub. They can give advice on more than 300 Tasmanian accommodation and holiday experiences and help you plan an unforgettable Tassie summer getaway, be it a week-long camping trip or a multi-day walking experience. You can also pick up your annual national parks pass or book the Spirit of Tasmania with us. For those with family and friends in town over the summer period, our team can create and book their Tassie itinerary with ideas and suggestions to fit with their interests. You can even pick up a gift voucher to spoil a loved one for Christmas. For more information, please visit hobartcity.com.au/feelingthecountry.

The centre’s participants are thrilled to be back home.

FOLLOWING a complete internal rebuild, the renovated Youth Arts & Recreation Centre (ARC) at 44 Collins Street is open again for Hobart’s youth community. Closing its doors in May 2018 due to flood damage was a hard time for the centre’s team. The weather event significantly impacted the building, requiring the demolition of internal walls, the music and art studios, kitchen, skate ramp, stage and reception area. Most of the furniture, equipment and artwork held within the centre was contaminated and had to be removed. The challenge was approached as an opportunity to redesign the space and the renovated

centre now features modern facilities that reflect the needs of young people. “There’s now a café area where young people can enjoy a quiet coffee in a contemporary space that’s a bit separate to the rest of the venue,” Community, Culture and Events Committee chair Cr Bill Harvey said. “It will also be the new hub for Youth ARC’s food program, which brings young people and volunteers together to cook meals. “There’s all new furniture and equipment ready for use. “Whether you’re into gaming, music, sport, art or just hanging out with your friends in a relaxed space, the centre provides young people with a space to

call their own.” In recognition of a new era for Youth ARC, a mural is currently being created by local artist Jamin, who will mentor aspiring young artists through the centre. “The centre was full of art created by young people, so the addition of this mural is quite symbolic,” Cr Harvey said. The drop-in centre operates Tuesday to Friday from 3pm until 6pm, with dance, music and art workshops held every week. The space has facilities for gaming, eight-ball, table tennis, cooking, dance, basketball and other sports, and more. It is free for all young people aged 12 to 25. Creating a sustainable future Hobart is one of Australia’s most bushfire-prone cities

THE City of Hobart started its new kerbside food organics and garden organics (FOGO) service last month. Hobart residents are the first in southern Tasmania who can now add food and other organics to their existing green waste bins for processing into quality compost. “The introduction of a FOGO collection is a major milestone in our city’s war on waste and our goal to achieve zero waste to landfill by 2030,” Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said. Food waste makes up more than half of household general waste, with the average household contributing more than 200 kilograms of food to landfill each year. “The FOGO service collects food waste and other organic materials for composting, removing these items from landfill and providing a direct benefit to our environment.” The new service is expected to divert up to 3,200 tonnes of food waste from landfill annually. Hobart City residents who don’t currently have a green waste bin can request a service via the City of Hobart website or by phoning (03) 6278 0273

(additional charges apply). Businesses, including cafes and restaurants, can also request a FOGO service. For more information, visit hobartcity.com.au/ FOGO.

Making beaches accessible for all

Logan Wickham with his surf lifesaver buddy Annabel Jamieson at the inaugural Starfish Nippers event held at Sandy Bay in early 2018.

SUMMER is the best time for beach getaways and young Tasmanians with mobility

restrictions can take part in swimming, catching waves, beach runs and exercises via the Starfish Nipper Program, facilitated by Surf Life Saving Tasmania (SLST). As part of the program, on Tuesday 21 January, volunteers will be on hand at Long Beach in Sandy Bay to work one-on-one with children and young adults with a disability. Participants will enhance their lifesaving skills, including water familiarisation, beach safety, catching waves, performing rescues and sand activities. “At Surf Life Saving Tasmania we want to give everyone the ability to access and enjoy the beach by bringing down barriers and offering support to those people with a disability who want to access the beach so that it is a safe and happy place

for all,” training and community programs manager Ondine Adey said. “The program is designed to suit each participant’s needs and is one of many community events held to improve access to beach activities for people in the community and promote inclusiveness and diversity in our water safety events around Tasmania.” For people who have trouble getting around on sand or accessing the water, the City of Hobart and SLST offer free beach wheelchairs at Long Beach, Sandy Bay, Monday to Friday, 9am–4.30pm. To find out what other activities Surf Life Saving Tasmania has in store this summer or to hire beach wheelchairs, please phone (03) 6216 7800 or email slst@slst.asn.au.

MIRROR GIVES DANCERS SPACE TO REFLECT ALL dancers of Hobart now have a great public practice space to rehearse their performances. A large mirror was installed on the outside of the Waterside Pavilion in Mawson Place in response to local K-Pop dancers seeking out reflective surfaces (such as shop windows) as makeshift mirrors. “We want Hobart to be recognised as a city that encourages and supports creative expression,” Community Culture and Events Committee chair Cr Bill Harvey said. “The feedback we’ve had so far has been fantastic. “We hope it will inspire dancers of all genres to bring their rehearsals outdoors to enjoy our wonderful waterfront and add to the vibrancy of the space.” The urban mirror is a product

Cultivate the life energy within yourself with the Healthy Hobart tai chi classes.

SUMMER WITH HEALTHY HOBART: ADVENTURE, DANCE AND SHADOW BOXING THE Healthy Hobart program is in full swing with participants enjoying many exciting activities. The highlights on the summer calendar are the mountain bike riding adventure experiences, healthy kids dance activities, and shadow boxing sessions originating in ancient China (also known as tai chi). Facilitated by Wendy Hartshorn, a registered fitness professional who has been teaching tai chi for 12 years, the classes will help keep your body, mind and soul balanced and healthy. Although it’s an art with real depth of knowledge and skills, it is easy to learn and soon delivers health benefits. The essential tai chi principles include mind integrated with body, control of movements and breathing, generating internal energy and mindfulness. The unique feature of tai chi is that it builds the inner strength from inside out, enabling development at any age. Ms Hartshorn will be instructing free tai chi classes every Thursday from 13 February to 19 March. No experience is necessary to participate, just come and try. Wendy’s gentle style of teaching welcomes beginners and is paced according to students’ wishes and needs. Delving into the realm of ‘Slow TV’: from the macro to the micro and amateur content-makers. From dramatic auroras and mushroom blooms on kunanyi/ Mount Wellington to the intimate world of a weedy seadragon in Opossum Bay, it allows us to do a leisurely double-take on life in Hobart. The film’s original soundtrack is scored by local emerging composer Finn Clarke. Slowbart has been developed by emerging curators Heath Willis and Victoria Bremner with support from the University of Tasmania, the City of Hobart and Spectral Media. The Loop is a public art initiative of the City of Hobart in partnership with the University of Tasmania and is located at 157 Elizabeth Street.

THIS summer, The Loop presents a special film program that reveals unusual views of Hobart and our surrounds from the people and inhabitants that call it home. Slowbart features an original ambient film created by contributions from across our community of professional

A showcase of locally-produced short films will also screen during a lunchtime program called ‘The Hour of Power’. Both programs will screen daily on The Loop from 8am to 8pm until 17 January 2020. For more information and for screening times, please visit theloophobart.com.au.

New Soapbox exhibition: meditations on muwinina THE City’s Soapbox billboards present a new artwork from an ongoing creative and conceptual writing collaboration between trawlwoolway family members Neika Lehman and Lauren Gower, with design by artist Rosie Isaac. In meditations on muwinina, the artists have used the concept of ‘family’ as a starting point for conversations around family, memory, country and the role of art to present writing about lutruwita/Tasmania. “We wanted to present Aboriginal conceptions of nipaluna/Hobart, addressing muwinina country and all its relations – mountain, animals, plants – as the caregivers to our

lives,” artist Neika Lehman said. “We wanted to respond to the ongoing sovereignty of the land and its custodians, to create an old and new portrait of the land where contemporary nipaluna/Hobart is situated. “We hope the Soapboxes can be a starting point for further conversations not only between locals, but also for tourists and other visitors.” The artwork is presented by ‘un Projects’ and HOBIENNALE and will be on display until February 2020.
