t gives me a great deal of pleasure as mayor to extend a warm greeting to you. Whether you are a new resident of our community or a short time visitor, we hope you will agree that Clarendon is a special place with warm caring people and much to offer.

We have a lot to be proud of in Clarendon, and we are excited to share it with you. Our city is most excited about our new Clarendon Aquatics Center, which opened May 28, 2021. This project was made possible by a generous anonymous benefactor, the Clarendon Economic Development Corporation, and the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department, as well as several local donors and foundations. With features for all ages to enjoy, we think you will find the aquatic center to be a place for your entire family to celebrate beautiful summer days. Our community also has many family activities throughout the year, including the Saints' Roost Celebration in July, the annual Colonel Goodnight Chuckwagon Cookoff in September, our Courthouse Lighting Ceremony and Small Business Saturday in November, and Christmas shopping events at our local merchants in December. To learn about our community, stop by our Visitor Center at 110 S. Kearney Street at the Mulkey Theatre. There you’ll find the office of the Chamber of Commerce and the Clarendon Economic Development Corporation and people who can help answer any question about our town. The Mulkey itself is a great source of pride. The 1946 theatre serves as a conference center and performance hall in addition to a movie house and features entertainment regularly on Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons. In addition to an excellent public school system, we are very proud of Clarendon College, which was rated the number two community college in the State of Texas for student success in 2015 and 4

2016 and has set several institutional records for enrollment in recent years. The Saints’ Roost Museum is an excellent place to spend some time learning about our history. The Board of Directors is now in the fundraising stage for a new building project. The museum is open daily Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. We encourage you to visit Prospect Park, which is just south of downtown on Kearney Street and is connected to the new aquatic center by a lighted walking path. It is a beautiful place for family picnics, reunions, birthday parties, or to just let your kids run and play. We also invite you to visit our numerous historic markers throughout the city and especially encourage you to visit our beautiful 1890 County Courthouse. Greenbelt Lake, located just north of town, is also something we’re quite proud of. Greenbelt offers fishing, camping and other recreational activities. And we are pleased to have an excellent disc golf course there as well. We hope you enjoy your stay and find that Clarendon is a great place to live or visit. First Saturdays are headlined by the Whistle-Stop Trade Days, which returned from its COVID hiatus on June 5, 2021, with live music, cold beer, food trucks, and more than 100 vendors with everything from homemade jellies, soaps, and lotions to handmade wood furniture to clothing to antiques and cool junk. Owners Kimberly and Jordan Green provide a truly unique and fun experience. And when

you’re ready to take a break from shopping, a cold beverage and live music are waiting for you in the tree-covered beer garden. n 1878, a charismatic preacher led a group of Northern Methodists to the frontier of the Texas Panhandle to settle at the junction of Carroll Creek and the Salt Fork of the Red River. Rev. L.H. Carhart set out to establish a Christian colony built on the values of temperance and education, and he named it Clarendon in honor of his wife, Clara. As the third settlement in the Panhandle, Clarendon stood apart from the towns of Mobeetie and Tascosa, which were known for saloons and rowdiness. The colony forbade alcohol, built a church as one of its first landmarks, and planned an academy to bring education to the plains. The neighbors said Clarendon

was where the saints roosted. The nickname stuck… Saints’ Roost. Nine years later, the future of the colony came into question when it became apparent that the Ft. Worth & Denver Railroad would miss the town. A vote was taken, and by the fall of 1887 houses, businesses, and people were all making the move six miles south to the present site of “new” Clarendon. The railroad brought people and commerce; but it also brought new lifestyles with saloons and other “vices.” And yet, the town did not lose sight of its original ambitions, becoming the home of the Panhandle’s first Methodist, Catholic, Episcopal, and

African-American congregations and establishing the area’s first college in 1898. Donley County eventually re-established prohibition in 1902, and Saints’ Roost again banished alcohol sales until 2013 when voters reversed the 111-year-old tradition. Today, if you like, you can raise a glass in old Saints’ Roost, but there’s no escaping the town’s original character. With a variety of churches and faith-based services and one of the highest-rated community colleges in the state, Clarendon remains true to its principles and welcomes visitors and newcomers to stay all night… or stay a little longer.

fter six years of fundraising, planning, and construction, the $2.7 million Clarendon Aquatic Center held a Grand Opening on Friday, May 28, 2021, and opened to the public for the Memorial Day weekend. The center is open from Memorial Day Weekend thru Labor Day Weekend from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Senior activities and adults only swim times are also scheduled during the year. Day passes will cost $5 for everyone over the age of 17, $4 for ages 4-17, and free for ages three and under. Annual passes are $100 per individual and $250 for a family of up to four members and $50 for each additional household family member. Parties can be scheduled at the aquatic center after hours at a rate of $125 per hour. The facility employs about a dozen lifeguards and a manager for the summer season.

The first public event at the pool was the Polar Bear Plunge held in conjunction with the Lions Club’s annual Chance Mark Jones Roar & Run 5K on Saturday, April 17. Features of the center include a Zero Depth Entry area, which is a gradually sloping entrance for easy accessibility; and a large Shallow Play Area with several attractions for younger children. Those attractions include a Toddler Slide, a Large Spray, Trio Dump Buckets, and Underwater Bubblers as well as shaded sitting area. Adjacent to that play area is a Spray Ground that young children will also enjoy. The Shallow Play Area connects on one side to the larger pool area that is 65’ long and accommodates three Lap Lanes. That area also has a Basketball Goal, a Volleyball Net, a ¾-meter Diving Stand, and a Climbing Wall. The facility also features a lift and specially designed steps to accommodate those with disabilities.

n old building that once pulled people off of US 287 will soon have new life and a new purpose for travelers to the area thanks to the Saints' Roost Expedition Company.

The former Petty Texaco service station at the corner of US 287 and Gorst Street has been purchased by Nikki and Dusty Green, Donley County residents and producers of the nationally-broadcast PBS travel show “Two for the Road,” who have a vision that involves a restoration of the building, a re-invention of the tourism model in the Panhandle, and what they hope will be an exciting new breath of life in historic downtown Clarendon. The building will be the Clarendon headquarters for the Greens' exciting new tour company. The immediate plan, say the Greens, is to clean up the property and restore it as best they can to its original condition. As far as records indicate, the Texaco Type “EM” service station was originally built back in the late 1930s or early 1940s. And although its outward appearance has changed quite a bit from those old days – from layers of new paint added every so often to the addition of the metal awning that crowns the structure - the Greens say getting the building back to how it looked in its early days will be difficult but not impossible.

The company’s Clarendon operations will run out of the old Texaco, which will be named the Lester Petty Station. Lester had to close the station in the early 1990s, and since then the building has had a handful of tenants over the years and was used for a variety of purposes. The Greens say they hope the old station will serve as much more than their tour company headquarters. There will be a retail component, and they aim to convert the large, spacious lot surrounding the structure into a community gathering area, complete with picnic tables, fire pits and games, and spaces for food trucks, outdoor music, special events and more. Following in the footsteps of other successful projects like the renovated Mulkey Theater and the new city aquatic center, they hope the project will be yet another catalyst in the effort to revitalize Clarendon’s historic downtown area. As far as the kinds of tours they’ll be offering through the Saints Roost Expedition Company, the Greens have been working over the better part of the last year with area businesses, landowners and government agencies to develop a variety of intimate, small-group tours that will highlight the area’s rich history, abundant wildlife and beautiful landscapes. The Greens say many of their tours will be innovative and unlike anything ever offered in our region, and are based on many of the incredible tours

And we want to apply what we’ve learned on our tours around the world to the tours we plan on offering here. So there’s a tremendous amount of work and planning involved but we

They’re going to be a lot of fun. And by next spring we hope to be fully

But we’ve got all our fingers crossed.” But what does this new venture mean for the future of their Lone Star Emmy-nominated travel show? Only good things, say the Greens, who in the midst of building this new company are also in the pre-production process of season five of Two for the Road. They aren’t certain at this point when production will actually begin or when the new season will air – thanks mostly to uncertainty

surrounding COVID-19 and their ability to travel again safely – but the show will definitely go on. “It sounds strange to say but the Saints Roost Expedition Company has been the silver lining of COVID for us,” said Nikki. “We’ve had the idea for this company for several years now, but just haven’t had the time to really invest in it because of all our traveling with the TV show. The Clarendon Chamber of Commerce will support the weekend with promotions and the opportunity for shoppers to win Clarendon Cash. or more than fifty years, Lake Greenbelt has provided drinking water for area communities and served as a center of recreation for tens of thousands of local and regional anglers and water sports enthusiasts. As the single biggest ongoing tourist attraction in Donley County, Greenbelt is a major employer and contributor to the community and has built a reputation as a family friendly destination for fishing, boating, camping, and other outdoor activities. The groundwork that eventually led to Lake Greenbelt was laid in 1950 when compact was signed between Donley, Armstrong, and Collingsworth county representatives. Attending that first meeting were C. B. (Cap) Morris and J. R. Porter, Ray J. Noblitt, W. Carroll Knorpp and W. S. Whaley. Although the member communities changed over time, work moved steadily forward. On April 14, 1954, a bill was introduced before the 53rd Legislature, and Gov. Allen Shivers signed the Act creating the Greenbelt Municipal and Industrial Water Authority. On March 29, 1966, contracts for the dam, filtration plant and pipeline were let. Construction price was $3,685,635.96, broken down into $1,795,514.06 for the dam; $624,941, filtration plant, and $1,230,180.90, pipeline. A month later, groundbreaking ceremonies were held. Two years later, Lake Greenbelt opened with a five-day celebration that began on Wednesday, May 29, 1968.

isitors to the Saints’ Roost Museum or the nearby Charles Goodnight Historical Center in Goodnight will notice both those locations are marked by 22-foot tall steel arrows painted in the traditional colors of the Comanches.

Those sculptures by Charles A. Smith are just two among dozens of similar arrows across 52 counties in the Panhandle and South Plains installed to honor historical sites, events, and artifacts in museums that link this region to the Native Americans who last roamed this area. It is named after Quanah Parker to recognize his role as the chief of the Comanche people.

The CEDC offers 80 percent grants up to a maximum of $20,000 to preserve, restore, or rehabilitate historic storefronts in the Central Business District and along the US 287 corridor. AQUATIC CENTER

In addition to direct economic incentives, the CEDC is authorized to fund quality of life projects to create or enhance amenities in the city, such as the new Clarendon Aquatic Center, which opened May 28, 2021. The CEDC provided $525,000 for the $2.7 million facility located downtown on the south end of Kearney Street.

ANTRO PLAZA

Now in its first stage, the CEDC's next downtown project will transform the former Antro Hotel site into an outdoor event space for musical performances, craft fairs, festivals, parties, and other activities. The proposal for the plaza utilizes the remaining walls of the 1927 hotel and calls for restrooms, an outdoor stage, a dance floor, picnic areas, and restoration of the old Antro sign.
