Whether you are a new resident of our community or a short time visitor, we hope you will agree that Clarendon is a special place with warm caring people and much to offer. We have a lot to be proud of in Clarendon, and we are excited to share it with you. Our city is most excited to invite you to the new Clarendon Aquatics Center, which will open May 28, 2021. This project has been made possible by a generous anonymous benefactor, the Clarendon Economic Development Corporation, the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department, as well as several local donors and foundations. With features for all ages to enjoy, we think you will find the aquatic center to be a place for your entire family to celebrate beautiful summer days. Our community also has many family activities throughout the year, including the Saints' Roost Celebration in July, the annual Colonel Goodnight Chuckwagon Cookoff in September, our Courthouse Lighting Ceremony and Small Business Saturday in November, and Christmas shopping events at our local merchants in December.

To learn about our community, stop by our Visitor Center at 110 S. Kearney Street at the Mulkey Theatre. There you’ll find the office of the Chamber of Commerce and the Clarendon Economic Development Corporation and people who can help answer any question about our town. The Mulkey itself is a great source of pride. The 1946 theatre serves as a conference center and performance hall in addition to a movie house and features entertainment regularly on Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons. In addition to an excellent public school system, we are very proud of Clarendon College, which was rated the number two community college in the State of Texas for student success in 2015 and 4

2016 and has set several institutional records for enrollment in recent years. The Saints’ Roost Museum is an excellent place to spend some time learning about our history. The Board of Directors is now in the fundraising stage for a new building project. The museum is open daily Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. We encourage you to visit Prospect Park, which is just south of downtown on Kearney Street and is connected to the new aquatic center by a lighted walking path. It is a beautiful place for family picnics, reunions, birthday parties, or to just let your kids run and play. We also invite you to visit our numerous historic markers throughout the city and especially encourage you to visit our beautiful 1890 County Courthouse. Greenbelt Lake, located just north of town, is also something we’re quite proud of. Greenbelt offers fishing, camping and other recreational activities. And we are pleased to have an excellent disc golf course there as well. We hope you enjoy your stay and find that Clarendon is a great place to live or visit. n 1878, a charismatic preacher led a group of Northern Methodists to the frontier of the Texas Panhandle to settle at the junction of Carroll Creek and the Salt Fork of the Red River. Rev. L.H. Carhart set out to establish a Christian colony built on the values of temperance and education, and he named it Clarendon in honor of his wife, Clara. As the third settlement in the Panhandle, Clarendon stood apart from the towns of Mobeetie and Tascosa, which were known for saloons and rowdiness. The colony forbade alcohol, built a church as one of its first landmarks, and planned an academy to bring education to the plains. The neighbors said Clarendon

was where the saints roosted. The nickname stuck… Saints’ Roost. Nine years later, the future of the colony came into question when it became apparent that the Ft. Worth & Denver Railroad would miss the town. A vote was taken, and by the fall of 1887 houses, businesses, and people were all making the move six miles south to the present site of “new” Clarendon. The railroad brought people and commerce; but it also brought new lifestyles with saloons and other “vices.” And yet, the town did not lose sight of its original ambitions, becoming the home of the Panhandle’s first Methodist, Catholic, Episcopal, and

African-American congregations and establishing the area’s first college in 1898. Donley County eventually re-established prohibition in 1902, and Saints’ Roost again banished alcohol sales until 2013 when voters reversed the 111-year-old tradition. Today, if you like, you can raise a glass in old Saints’ Roost, but there’s no escaping the town’s original character. With a variety of churches and faith-based services and one of the highest-rated community colleges in the state, Clarendon remains true to its principles and welcomes visitors and newcomers to stay all night… or stay a little longer.

Clarendon Aquatic Center

Grand Opening: May 28, 2021 Come make a big splash in Clarendon! After six years of fundraising, planning, and construction, the $2.7 million Clarendon Aquatic Center will hold a Grand Opening on Friday, May 28, 2021, and will be open to the public for the Memorial Day weekend. Project designer Steve Shank of WatersEdge, the Kansas firm that has designed the pool, says, “This is going to be a good pool and the citizens here will love it.” The center will be open regularly from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday and will be closed on Mondays. Day passes will cost $5 for everyone over the age of 17, $4 for ages 4-17, and free for ages three and under. Annual passes are $100 per individual and $250 for a family of up to four members and $50 for each additional household family member. Parties can be scheduled at the aquatic center after hours at a rate of $125 per hour. City officials are also working with the Donley County Senior Citizens Center to plan senior activities, and "adults only" swim times are being considered as well. Trinity Cavanaugh will be the pool manager for the aquatic center, and the facility is expected to employ about a dozen lifeguards for the summer season. City officials will begin filling and treating the pool about April 1, and the first 12

public event at the pool will be the Polar Bear Plunge held in conjunction with the Lions Club’s annual Chance Mark Jones Roar & Run 5K on Saturday, April 17. Features of the center include a Zero Depth Entry area, which is a gradually sloping entrance for easy accessibility; and a large Shallow Play Area with several attractions for younger children. Those attractions include a Toddler Slide, a Large Spray, Trio Dump Buckets, and Underwater Bubblers as well as shaded sitting area. Adjacent to that play area is a Spray Ground that young children will also enjoy. The Shallow Play Area connects on one side to the larger pool area that is 65’ long and accommodates three Lap Lanes. That area also has a Basketball Goal, a Volleyball Net, a ¾-meter Diving Stand, and a Climbing Wall. The facility also features a lift and specially designed steps to accommodate those with disabilities. The Clarendon Aquatic Center project began in 2015 when an anonymous benefactor offered $500,000 to the city for a water recreation facility if the funds could be matched. With major funding from the Clarendon Economic Development Corporation, Texas Parks & Wildlife Department, and numerous donors, the match was exceeded, and ground was broken on the facility on September 17, 2019.

Sandell hosting big league concerts TobyMac, Zach Williams, Mac Powell, CAIN, Cochren & Co. start '21 season Clarendon's Sandell Drive-In has developed a reputation for hosting some of the biggest names in Christian music, and more exciting live concerts are planned for the 2021 season! If anything good came from the COVID-19 pandemic, it was the development of drive-in concerts that brought a lot of famous performances to small towns all across America. Through its partnerships with Awakening Events for live concerts and Encore for exclusive pre-recorded concerts, the Sandell hosted some incredible performances in 2020. Encore's concerts streamed on the Sandell's big screen started it all with Garth Brooks in June of last year, followed by later perfor-

But it was the live-onstage performance by Casting Crowns last July that drew the biggest crowd in the Sandell's history - about 1,000 people - and showed the power of Christian music. An October concert featuring Big Daddy Weave and Zach Williams was also hugely successful and drew fans from hundreds of miles away to Clarendon, Texas. The 2021 season will start April 16 with a live performance by TobyMac and Cochren & Co. Then on May 20, Zach Williams will return with Mac Powell and CAIN, and more events are coming!

Broncos defeat Grapeland, 64-60

hether or not you are a basketball fan, you have to be a Bronco fan after witnessing history being made in the Alamodome in San Antonio on March 13, 2021. The State Championship was the first for a team sport in Clarendon and Coach Boston Hudson, at 25, might possibly be the youngest coach to win a State Championship. “The guys did what I asked. They bought in (to our plan), and I think we did it the right way,” the first year head basketball coach said about the Broncos’ 2A State win. All season, the Broncos had a goal to reach; the State Tournament and a Championship. With fans watching in the ‘Dome, in the Mulkey Theater, and at home, the Broncos made their dream a reality by defeating Grapeland, 64-60. 20

The Broncos had only four losses this season. Their last loss came at the hands of the Canyon Eagles, a solid 4A team. That loss spurred on the Broncos who faced off against Gruver to begin a 12-0 run in regular season. Their post-season play was stellar as well as they worked their way through Fritch, Farwell, Floydada, Christoval, Wink, and Lipan to punch their ticket to the Championship game in San Antonio. The Broncos stormed to an early 18-12 lead behind a 10-3 run before ending the first quarter of play. The Broncos fell off somewhat in the second quarter but regained the momentum after the break. There were 11 lead changes in the game and four times the score was tied. Both teams were cold from behind the arc shooting 16 three-pointers all together, but the one long ball that was all net belonged to Clar-

endon's Donovan Thompson at the third quarter buzzer from about six or seven steps behind the mark to get the Broncos to one point up. “I thought Jordan (Herndon) was going to hold it, and I ran up there to shoot the ball and saw Jmaury (Davis) set me a screen and I shot it,” Thompson said. “We knew they were just as athletic as us. They had their #3 who played just like Jmaury, and he had a double-double at half time. Number 00 was back-to-back All-State and we knew #5 was going to be a handful.” Thompson gave props to Jordan Herndon who took out the best players all year with his strong defense and was able to get the Grapeland player in foul trouble. The Broncos were able to add three points to their one-point lead in the final eight minutes of play that

had exaggerated ups and downs for both teams. With only 40 seconds to play, Grapeland turned the ball over, and Clarendon’s Lamarcus Peniger drove to the basket and was fouled. Peniger missed the first shot, but made the second putting the game at 60 all with 30 seconds remaining.

A player for Grapeland took the inbound ball and headed down court only to be picked by Peniger who made good on an easy layup to lead by two with 10 seconds to go.

Seniors Donovan Thompson and Ethan Babcock have been solid all season and contributed to the Broncos’ great season at 25-4.

“I was so excited on the steal, I almost jumped on the layup early,” Peniger said. “I thought I was going to get chased down, but it was exciting to make that shot and help my team.” After a time out, Grapeland’s Johnny Lamb drove to the bucket, but Davis was there to take the charge giving his team the ball while fouling

“I’m just so proud of them and I’m thankful for our seniors Ethan and Donovan,” Hudson said. “We will miss these guys, but what a way to go out for these two. I don’t think it could end any better than the way it did.” Thompson would go on to win the MVP of Class 2A. “We’re just excited and going to enjoy this and try to do it again next year,” Hudson said.

Thompson finished with 21, Davis had 13, and Sylvester Ballard helped with 12. Peniger put in eight, Herndon added six, and D’Costa finished with four. Davis had eight rebounds, Ballard grabbed seven and had two assists, Thompson had five rebounds and five assists, Peniger grabbed two offensive rebounds and had three assists, Herndon had five defensive rebounds with two assists, D’Costa had four rebounds and five assists, and Lyric Smith had one defensive rebound in the game. The Texas Association of Basketball Coaches selected an All-Tournament team. Joining Thompson was Ballard and Davis. This was the Broncos' fifth trip to the state tournament but their first championship. Clarendon's previous appearances were in 1969, 1970, 2011, and 2017. or more than fifty years, Lake Greenbelt has provided drinking water for area communities and served as a center of recreation for tens of thousands of local and regional anglers and water sports enthusiasts. As the single biggest ongoing tourist attraction in Donley County, Greenbelt is a major employer and contributor to the community and has built a reputation as a family friendly destination for fishing, boating, camping, and other outdoor activities. The groundwork that eventually led to Lake Greenbelt was laid in 1950 when compact was signed between Donley, Armstrong, and Collingsworth county representatives. Attending that first meeting were C. B. (Cap) Morris and J. R. Porter, Ray J. Noblitt, W. Carroll Knorpp and W. S. Whaley. Although the member communities changed over time, work moved steadily forward. On April 14, 1954, a bill was introduced before the 53rd Legislature, and Gov. Allen Shivers signed the Act creating the Greenbelt Municipal and Industrial Water Authority. On March 29, 1966, contracts for the dam, filtration plant and pipeline were let. Construction price was $3,685,635.96, broken down into $1,795,514.06 for the dam; $624,941, filtration plant, and $1,230,180.90, pipeline. A month later, groundbreaking ceremonies were held. Two years later, Lake Greenbelt opened with a five-day celebration that began on Wednesday, May 29, 1968.

The CEDC oversees the operation of the Mulkey in its new role as a multi-functional event center that hosts not only movies and performing arts but also civic meetings and private parties. In addition to direct economic incentives, the CEDC is authorized to fund quality of life projects to create or enhance amenities in the city, such as the new Clarendon Aquatic Center, which opens May 28, 2021. The CEDC provided $525,000 for the $2.7 million facility located downtown on the south end of Kearney Street.

Now in its first stage, the CEDC's next downtown project will transform the former Antro Hotel site into an outdoor event space for musical performances, craft fairs, festivals, parties, and other activities. Clarendon College alumni Wyatt Casper and current CC rodeo team member Riggin Smith both appeared in RFD-TV's "The American" in AT&T Stadium in Arlington in March 2020 with Casper winning the Saddle Bronc competition and more than $600,000 in prize money. 50
