Milky Chance to play May Days on Carnegie Green Madeline Zann Entertainment Editor

On April 16, the DU Programming Board (DUPB) announced that Milky Chance will perform for this year’s May Days, which will take place during week nine of spring quarter, from May 1923. Milky Chance will perform at MusicFest, which will launch the celebration on May 16.

The German indie duo is known for their reggae and electronica-influenced dance beats.

After releasing their first single “Stolen Dance” to YouTube in 2013, the band began to gain both critical and popular traction, which only continued with the releases of other singles, “Flashed Junk Mind,” and “Down by the

River” in 2014. Their debut album, “Sadnecessary,” which they self-produced, was released first in Germany in 2013 and then a year later in the United States.

Milky Chance is the only band playing at MusicFest this year. The show will be on Carnegie Green and starts at 7:30 p.m. with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 each and are only available to DU students. These tickets can be purchased through the DUPB website. Students can buy a maximum of two tickets at one time.

This is the first May Days event to have been announced.

Other events will be announced online as the event gets closer.

Undergraduate Student Government Elections John Poe News Editor Elections for positions on DU’s Undergraduate Student Government (USG) are taking place this week.

Campaigning started April 19 at 10 p.m. and lasts the entire week.

A debate between candidates running for President and Vice President will take place on April 22 at 7 p.m. in Davis Auditorium in Sturm Hall.

“Voting begins at 8 a.m. on Wednesday [April 22] and runs until [12 p.m. on Friday, April 24],” said Jack Jensen, Senior Senator and Chairman of the Senate Affairs Committee. “Students will be emailed a personal link to vote.”

Students can only vote for certain positions, depending on their credit hours. “If their credit hours reflect a grade different than the years they have been here and are not able to vote for their class representative, they can email Carl Johnson at carl.

johnson@studentlife.du.edu and he will record their vote for their proper representative,” said Jensen.

Jensen believes the elections are important to the student body because they allow students to have their opinion voiced. “By choosing their representation they [students] are choosing the voice they want to speak on their behalf to the upper administration of this school,” said Jensen. “Sometimes it seems like things happen behind closed doors here, which is true to an extent, but

often the student body doesn’t realize that we have a say in a lot of proceedings with administration through the student representation of USG.” “Many of the USG Senators and Secretaries are involved at a high level on various committees to make sure the students are considered when decisions are being made,” said Jensen. “Voting is the only way to ensure your aspirations for the future of our campus is taken into account.”

DU students join 200 activists for Capitol Hill Days Brian Bowen Contributing Writer

From April 10-14, three DU students joined 200 activists in Washington D.C. to lobby their state’s representatives to make international family planning a priority as part of Population Connection’s annual advocacy event, Capitol Hill Days, according to the event’s press release.

According to its website, Population Connection is a grassroots political organization dedicated to stabilizing international population growth by empowering women and lobbying governments to fund birth control.

Population Connection hosts Capitol Hill Days, which strive to involve young activists and help them make their voices heard.

“This year’s Capitol Hill Days will bring together participants from 31 states and campuses such as Ohio State University, UNC Chapel Hill, and University of Denver,” said the event’s press release.

DU students Diego Pons, Emily Thomas and Jenea Covington attended the event to lobby Colorado state representatives and they brought back positive reviews of their experience.

“It was a great learning experience for me. I’m very interested in the political side of activism,” said Thomas, a senior international studies major from Fort Collins, Colorado. “I truly believe that with a lot of the things that I care about, not just this issue but a lot of other social and environmental sustainability issues, the problem is in addressing a fundamental political imbalance.”

According to Rebecca Harrington, the national field director for Population Connection, this year’s Capitol Hill Days was the 17th annual event.

Brian Dixon, senior vice president for media and government relations for Population Connection, explained that Capitol Hill Days is an important event for addressing U.S. investment in international family planning.

“Without real investment in family planning around the world, every problem we face will be more difficult to solve. And Congress needs to hear from voters about this issue because nothing motivates politicians like pressure from voters,” said Dixon.

Capitol Hill Days began when student activists arrived in D.C. on April

10 and gathered for the welcome reception. At the reception, the first Annual “Empower Her, Empower Humanity Award,” was presented to Senator Barbara Boxer. According to the event’s website website, Boxer earned the award for her years of work advocating for women’s health.

On April 11, students attended information sessions to learn more about some of the issues the event sought to address, such as the Helms Amendment Text and the Global Gag Rule.

Thomas explained that, “The Global Gag Rule bars U.S. family planning aid to foreign non-governmental organizations that use even non-U.S. funds to provide safe, legal abortions; provide counseling on abortions; offer

referrals for abortions; or support legal abortions as a matter of policy in their own country.”

Later, attendees listened to the keynote address, “Why Family Planning is Important for Sustainable Development,” delivered by Dr. Gladys KalemaZikusoka, Founder and CEO of Conservation through Public Health.

On April 12, Capitol Hill Days attendees went through advocacy training and presentation training to prepare to lobby their respective state representatives on Capitol Hill. According to Thomas and Pons, advocates were advised to make three requests of their state representatives: the first was that a billion dollars be allocated from the U.S. budget to be spent on funding international family planning services like birth control. The second was that, of the billion dollars allocated to family planning, 65 million dollars be spent to fund the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). The third was a request that state representatives oppose the Global Gag Rule.

Pons, doctoral geography student from Guatemala, appreciated his experience at Capitol Hill Days and the chance to lobby politicians in Washington, D.C. “I think [lobbying Colorado State Representatives] was awesome. I think it was an amazing experience and it was easier than I thought it would be in terms of how well representatives treated us,” said Pons.

In closing remarks, both Pons and Thomas mentioned that the Capitol Hill Days event is an amazing opportunity that is open to students and should not be passed up.

Alumnus profile: Romanoff Van Jones pays DU a visit The Clarion sits down with the CEO of MHAC Calvin Jouard Staff Writer

Andrew Romanoff, a DU alumnus and former Colorado state legislator, made local headlines once again after being named the new CEO and president of Mental Health America of Colorado (MHAC) on April 1.

“This is a cause I care about,” said Romanoff. “I think the organization is advancing the cause and I think we have made a lot of progress as a state, but not enough. That’s one of the reasons I joined.”

During his time in the Colorado House of Representatives, the Ohio native worked in the Health, Environment, Welfare and Institutions Committee.

Growing up, his mother worked at a mental health hospital, and his father worked as a prosecutor.

“My mom helped people who might have been living on the streets, and ,when they didn’t get help, they could end up in my dad’s courtroom because they were hurting themselves or hurting other people,” said Romanoff.

For Romanoff, the issue of mental health hits particularly close to home, especially considering recent events.

His cousin took her own life New Year’s Day, just a few months ago.

“We had a wonderful time New Year’s Eve, [but] we had no idea that she was depressed, much less suicidal. We didn’t see it. She wouldn’t let us see it.”

“If you talk to enough folks, pretty much every family in Colorado has been touched by suicide, mental illness or drugs and alcohol abuse,” added Romanoff. “It’s striking. There has got to be a better way to address this problem before it’s too late.”

MHAC provides pro bono therapist referral services, funds a schoolbased program called Check Your Head and also engages in lobbying.

Eliminating stigma and ensuring

accessible care are among the goals of the now 60-year-old organization.

After receiving his bachelor’s degree from Yale University and his master’s in public policy from Harvard University, Romanoff came to Denver on a weekend visit in 1993 and decided to stay.

Romanoff starting taking night classes at the Sturm College of Law in 2002 while simultaneously serving in the Colorado House of Representatives. He was elected to four consecutive terms from 2001 to 2009, and was voted Speaker in his last two terms.

“I loved my job in the legislature, and it was a great gig to be the Speaker of the House,” said Romanoff. “I think we made a difference on my watch.”

Both the Colorado Economic Recovery Act and the construction project Building Excellent Schools Today (BEST) were written by Romanoff.

He graduated with his Juris Doctorate in 2008.

“Some of the best professors I’ve had at any school I’ve ever been to at DU,” said Romanoff.

Despite his many life successes, both of Romanoff ’s bids for Congress fell short. This past November, Republican-incumbent Mike Coffman defeated Romanoff in the 6th Congressional District race, and in 2010 Romanoff ran unsuccessfully to unseat Michael Bennet in the Senate democratic primary.

Romanoff indicated that he is not planning to run for office again, and is focusing on what he deems a life and death problem.

“The really striking thing is that a lot of the conversations we are having today were taking place 50, 60 years ago,” said Romanoff. “It’s not to say that we haven’t made any progress, because we have, I’m hoping in another 50 years we’re not having the same conversation.”

DU’s Bohdi Cooper rocks local venues Daniel Muzi Contributing Writer

French and computer science double-major Bohdi Cooper from Vermont is no stranger to the hectic schedules that college students often deal with. With classes, clubs, jobs, homework and social events all taking up time during the week, it can often feel overwhelming. Bohdi, however, does it all with a smile and great attitude.

Though only a sophomore, Bohdi is a leading member of the student improv group Skintight Outrage, member of the DU Club Ultimate Team, part of the ZBT fraternity and host of the radio show “The Shohdi with Bohdi” for KXDU. One might think that this is enough, but for the past few quarters Bohdi has been doing more: DJing at

bars and special events throughout the city.

Though he has always been interested in music, Bohdi’s interest in DJing began in high school when the captain of his cross country and track team introduced him to electronic music. Groups such as Pretty Lights and Gramatik played a key role in developing his own taste in music. The end of high school helped launch his DJing career as his parents gave him a Novation Launchpad, a keyboardless MIDI controller, as a graduation present.

Though Bohdi personally prefers electronic music, he tailors his sets for events to fit the crowd. A typical Thursday night sees Bohdi performing at South Philly Cheesesteaks on University Boulevard, playing all manners of popular music, from pop to rap to rock. His radio show, on the other hand, leans more towards his personal taste as he tries to feature music that you wouldn’t normally hear when out for a night of fun.

While Bohdi has DJed for places such as the Church (a nightclub in downtown Denver) and Crimson and Gold Tavern, he recently agreed to a more consistent gig, becoming South Philly’s resident DJ. One of his favorite places to DJ, South Philly’s has recently taken steps to upgrade the entire bar, with more consistent hours and a new menu. Along with these changes, they also installed an entirely new sound and light system, set up by senior business information technology major Edward Guinn of South Burlington, Vermont. Though Bohdi brings his own equipment, he says he absolutely loves the new setup and is extremely excited by this new opportunity.

Though he is active in many groups on campus, music remains his true passion and takes priority over other commitments. Eventually, Bohdi hopes to turn his passion for music into a career, ultimately transitioning from DJing other bands to creating his own music. He says he is extremely grateful for all of the support that his family, friends and the DU community

So, in honor of spring and all the fantastic things that come with it, here are five wonderful and easy recipes for spring salads. They all take just a few ingredients and a couple minutes to toss together.

It has become a mantra that I keep repeating to my friends and family who complain about the pounds they gained over the holidays and snowy months: spring is the perfect time to get healthy for so many reasons.

The weather is warmer, creating many more opportunities for easy exercise. At long last, fresh fruits and vegetables are starting to come into season. If you are lucky enough to be able to grow a garden, you get to enjoy the freshest produce available, but even for those of us who have to get our produce at the store, fruits and vegetables just start to

Caprese Salad Ingredients For the salad: 4 to 6 cups salad greens 2 cups mixed berries 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved 1 cup mozzarella cheese

In a large bowl, mix together all the salad ingredients. In a separate bowl, mix together the ingredients for the dressing. Add the dressing and enjoy.

The simplest version of this just takes mozzarella cheese, tomato, basil, olive oil, vinegar and a little salt and pepper. The best thing about it, though, is that it can be made in many variations with simple additions or changes. Adding some avocado is one way to put a burst of flavor into this salad. Another version adds berries, pecans and leafy greens.

Simple Pasta Salad Ingredients About half of a box of pasta of your choice (penne or mini shells work well) ½ cup of sliced black olives ½ cup of sliced green olives ½ cup of cherry tomatoes, halved Handful each of pepperoncini peppers and jarred sliced jalapenos Cheese of your choice (some good choices are goat cheese, parmesan and feta) Italian dressing Salt and pepper Mix all the ingredients and enjoy.

A Caprese salad is a simple and versatile dish you can enjoy for lunch or dinner.

Because not everyone enjoys green salads all the time, this is a slightly

different take on a salad, but by no means less refreshing. This recipe is easy to switch up and the ratios depend on your specific taste.

Garbanzo Bean Salad Ingredients For the salad: 1 can of garbanzo beans 1 diced red onion ½ cup feta cheese ½ cup cherry tomatoes For the dressing: 2 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp lemon juice Dice the red onion, halve the cherry tomatoes and chop the parsley. Combine the garbanzo beans, onion, feta cheese and cherry tomatoes. In a separate bowl, combine the lemon juice, olive oil and a little salt and pepper. Pour the dressing over the salad and enjoy.

It is easy to procure the ingredients and about as easy to put together, courtesy of Sprouts Market. This garbanzo bean salad is still really healthy but appealing for those people who don’t necessarily like the green salads either.

Everyone has time to make a salad, and we could all use some more greens in our diets. One tip to make you more likely to eat salads is to cut up the ingredients ahead of time and put them in Ziploc bags or Tupperware, so when the time comes you can just throw it all together in a bowl. Spring is the ideal season to become re-acquainted with salads, so take these easy recipes and enjoy the season.

“I never thought I’d see the day where my glass

sculptures would be in a gallery,” said glassblower Eusheen (Goines).

Originally from Oregon, Eusheen spent a summer in high school traveling across America with his mother.

Nestled into a nook in Cherry Creek North, just over three miles from campus, So Perfect Eats is a small, local cafe that looks a bit like the inside of an Easter egg. It can be hard to find, located in the cranny of a side street, but once you are able to ‘hunt’ it down you won’t be sorry at all that you had to. With delicious salads, soups, sandwiches and baked goods, you can’t go wrong stopping here for breakfast, lunch, dinner or dessert.

Walking into the cafe, you find yourself immersed in pastel greens, pinks, blues and yellows. The effect is utterly charming and quaint, if a tad Easter-y. Each small table is set with a cute array of place-settings and flowers in the shop’s signature pastels, and the walls are filled with kitschy, yet beautiful, specialty kitchen supplies that customers can purchase.

The room is usually filled with light chatter and smiling faces, creating a friendly and welcoming vibe.

The bakery started as the passion-project of Lynda Campell who, according to the So Perfect Eats website, gave up a life of travel and moved from Manhattan to Denver to pursue her dream of opening a cafe and bakery.

The passion she has for baking and her painstaking attention to detail are evident in every dish served at the shop, but none so much as in the baked treats.

Cookies ($2.50+) are decorated to the finest detail and have included Indian elephants, intricate Easter eggs and tiny smiling zoo animals.

Not to mention that they taste absolutely delicious if you can muster the strength to eat

the tiny works of art. If you’re looking for more sweets but aren’t into cookies, the bakery also offers brownies ($2.75), macaroons ($2.25+), pie (a slice is $3.95+) and cupcakes ($3.75+).

However, don’t be deceived into thinking that So Perfect Eats is solely a bakery. If you’re looking for an actual meal, this shop will certainly not disappoint.

Delicious and generously portioned soups, salads and sandwiches are also on the menu. The Ultimate Caesar ($13.95) was an absolute delight when I stopped by the shop, filled with fresh romaine lettuce, artichoke hearts, avocado, tomatoes, chicken and croutons and topped with a delicious hand-made dressing.

Other specialties include the Aspen Spa Sandwich ($9.95) which consists of roasted turkey with avocado, sprouts and brie on homemade ciabatta bread with ranch dressing, and the Southwest Turkey Sandwich ($9.95), with smoked turkey, avocado, tomato, cheddar cheese and spicy mayo on ciabatta.

The soup of the day ($5.75+) is also a great option, with plenty of variation by the day, but always plenty of flavor. Soups may include White Bean Chicken Chili, Mac and Cheese, Corn Chowder and more.

The menu items are a bit pricey, but portions are so large that they can easily be shared or eaten for a second meal as leftovers. So the next time you’re in Cherry Creek North and looking for a bite to eat, look no further than So Perfect Eats. Take some food to go or stop in and chat—either way you’ll be glad that you found this hidden gem.

“I would say I learned from a lot of people,” said Eusheen. “It’s because of glassblowers’ openness and willingness to help. That’s what I do when I teach. I don’t keep secrets from people or hide tricks.”

Because selling pipes was illegal up until recently, glassblowing and its followers banded together. As a result, a tight knit and collective community was created.

“Glassblowing culture was built on giving back,” said Eusheen. “We pass and share with others.”

Black Book Gallery, a local gallery that just recently moved to the Baker Neighborhood, recognized early on the craftsmanship, functionality and stylistic beauty that is pipe-making and is helping change the rhetoric around it. As the gallery’s website explains, “By emerging in the fine art world as intricate, delicate sculptures, the stigma of ‘drug paraphernalia’ is quickly fading.”

One of Eusheen’s pieces, titled “Two Purps,” is a recycler with intricate detail —a style of water pipe that “recycles” the water throughout pieces, or, in other words, pulls water through the chambers in a way that makes the hit smoother and easier to take. In “Two Purps,” the water would flow in fluid circles throughout the piece’s circular chambers. Beyond just the functionality of the piece, “Two Purps” is asymmetric and has fluid, smooth curves that resemble, to me, the flow of the water.

Four other artists: JAG, Micah Evans, SLOP and Zach Puchowitz, were also featured in the show, each offering a unique perspective to glassblowing. Prints by Mike Giant were a unique bonus to the exhibit, showcasing a selection of originals.

Presence of women dominates males in MFJS department Courtney Luster Assistant Lifestyles Editor The Media Film and Journalism Studies Department at DU has about 250 students in four different majors—media studies, journalism studies, film studies and production and strategic communications. For many students in these majors, it is a great mystery as to why the vast majority of their classes are dominated numerically by women, especially as they progress to the upperlevel classes in these majors.

According to Peggy Marlow, Office and Budget Administrator for the Media, Film and Journalism Studies Department, there are 14 females and 32 males in the film studies major, 51 females and 21 males in journalism studies, 25 females and 8 males in media studies and 70 females and 21 males in strategic communications.

In a Newswriting and Reporting class (part of the journalism and media studies majors) taught by Jim Brosemer during the winter quarter, only two out of 20 people in the class were male. The same drastically skewed ratio is present in the following class, Online and Visual Journalism; taught this quarter by Christof Demont-Heinrich, which has only one male in a class of 15 people.

In another class taught by Margie Thompson this quarter— Gender, Culture, and Global Communication (part of the media studies major)— there are no males enrolled.

This skewed ratio is not only evident to the professors, but the students enrolled as well. “I don’t think I’ve ever had a class in the department that’s been half and half or even two-thirds [female]. It’s always the very vast majority female,” said Dina Grossman, a junior majoring in strategic communications from Albuquerque, New Mexico.

With these drastically skewed representations of males versus females in media classes at DU, some women in the program might wonder what this means for their career plans in journalism. The facts and statistics of women’s representation in journalistic outlets actually presents a different and more concerning outlook. According to an American Society of News Editors census cited by the Women’s Media Center’s The Status of Women in Media in 2014, included in an article

by US News, women only make up 36 percent of newspaper staffs.

The US News article also states that in some places, diversity is actually decreasing. Additionally, in three of America’s best known newspapers, USA Today, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, male opinion page writers outnumbered women four to one, according to the Women’s Media Center report. This article also states that, out of all the major American Sunday morning talk show hosts, only one was not a white male, and that in the sports arena, nine percent of editors are white and 90 percent are male.

This disparity is noticeable and significant to students in MFJS as well. “The New York Times and other serious publications are still predominantly male. It’s changing for sure, but I think that historically it was seen as more of a male-dominated profession,” said Alli Longwell, a junior majoring in journalism and minoring in marketing from Golden, Colorado.

While the women studying to become journalists at DU may be discouraged at their overwhelmingly male competition in the job market, women studying strategic communications have a different outlook due to the lack of males in their job field. In the world of advertising, 60 percent of employees are female, according to a study done for The Atlantic by the Institute for Women’s Policy Research.

“There is some evidence that women tend to be more collaborative, participative and pro-social than men are—but that’s impossible to untangle from our societal expectation that they be that way.

Women have only been found to talk more than men when they’re in collaborative settings,” says author Olga Khazan in the article.

“Marketing is generally pretty even but my work experience in marketing is still pretty male, depending on what it is. More artsy stuff is usually women but more business-y, analytical side of it is usually more men,” said Longwell.

In addition to effects like uneven competition in the job market, DU students in the MFJS departments have different experiences in their majors based on the imbalance of women and men in their classes.

“It’s kind of more comfortable being in a class with all girls because we all have similar views and it’s easy to share your opinion because you know you’re not alone,” said Grossman. “Sometimes I think it would

be nice to have a guy’s perspective though, especially in [Strategic Communications] when we talk about advertising and how different people perceive different messages. It would be good to see how guys perceive different messages.”

In a world that is slowly trying to bridge the gap between men and women in different industries, we are the next generation of adults entering

the workforce with an overrepresentation of males, especially in leadership positions. Equality is becoming increasingly0. more important and demanded everyday in American society and we can only hope the hardworking students in the MFJS department all have a fair shot at pursuing the careers they dream of and not having to consider gender as a factor.

Every Wednesday from 5 to 6 p.m., the Emergent Digital Practices department hosts Digiart Wednesdays, its series of lectures by virtual scholars.

Each artist, thinker and/or creator is streamed into the Hypercube (an area on the top floor of Shwayder Art Building) for a discussion on his or her work.

Guests in the past have included Chaim Gingold, a computer scientist and designer who worked on the game “Spore” and an acclaimed science book for iPads titled “Earth, a Primer” and Jeremy Bailey, an artist who creates internet performance artwork — including the You Museum, the world’s first and only personal museum the replaces banner ads on the internet with various personalized pieces of art.

The lineup of speakers still to come is also comprised of an array of impressive individuals not to be

missed. On April 29, Angela Washko, a feminist digital artist whose recent work includes creating performances inside World of Warcraft initiating conversations about feminism within the game, will be speaking. May 5 will see a visit from Yael Braha, a creative director, designer, filmmaker and fine artist who recently developed projections for the UN building in NYC to call for action on climate change. In addition, for those interested in emerging new technologies themselves, the department also hosts Tech Tuesdays, in which students are able to demo the latest in cutting-edge technology. The events begin every Tuesday at 5 p.m. in the Hypercube, and past technologies have included a 3D Projector, the Oculus Rift and 3D printing.

Lamont’s ‘Merry Wives’ a crowd-pleaser Monica McFadden Contributing Writer

The Lamont School of Music’s production of “The Merry Wives of Windsor,” directed by Professor Kenneth Cox, opened April 16 and ran one weekend.

While an opera can sometimes be rather daunting to attend, “Merry Wives” is a great introduction due to its abundant comedy, the spoken dialogue in between musical numbers and its shift from the original German to English.

This production had two sets of lead actors, one performing on Thursday and Saturday and the other on Friday and Sunday.

Based on Shakespeare’s play of the same name, Otto Nicolai’s sole masterpiece “Merry Wives” follows Mrs. Page (Sonora Dolce and Jovahnna Anderson) and Mrs. Ford (Emily Gradowski and Lisa Tenorio), who plot playful revenge on Sir John Falstaff (Griffen Hogan Tracy and Michael Hewitt), “the fat knight,” who sent love letters to both women. They are outraged due to their married status and each pretend to be in love with Falstaff, tricking him during a series of encounters while also deceiving jealous Mr. Ford (Welly Disayanon and Jared Giammanco) along the way. Mr. Page (Rocco McKeel and Zeky Nadji) and the neighbors are won over by the wives’ tall tales.

Time will be a big factor in seeing how well Tidal does.

Streaming is currently one of the biggest, most controversial topics in the music industry, so let’s see how long Spotify stays on the throne.

However, the (hopefully) warm month is full of something else: entertaining concerts held by dozens of talented musicians. Below is a list of just a few of the concerts worth checking out.

Matt & Kim - May 5

This dreamy duo dances their way to the Ogden on May 5. Matt & Kim, responsible for hit “Daylight,” are touring in support of their album release, “New Glow,” which dropped this month. The pair toured extensively last year, playing festivals such as Riot Fest and headlining their own tours. Indie pop isn’t much sweeter than this, so get tickets on the Ogden Theater website and put on your dancing shoes.

Openers have not yet been announced for the show.

For fans of: Walk the Moon, Tegan and Sara

Twin Peaks, Plum, Ned Garthe Explosion - May 14

Hailing from Chicago, this rock and roll quintet is heading to the Hi-Dive on May 14 as part of the Red Bull Select concert series. Garage rock encompasses a big spectrum, but Twin Peaks stands out among the rest, supported by a fiery youthfulness that is reminiscent of old rock. Twin Peaks has an impressive touring schedule this year, playing at festivals such as Lollapalooza and Firefly; make sure you catch these Chicago boys before they move on up to the big leagues.

Local band Plum, a psychedelic rock group, will be one of two openers for Twin Peaks. Plum has released

two singles, “Hello Miss Yellow” and “Behind Your Man,” both of which are crafted with meticulous harmonies and a sound highly inspired by the ‘60s and ‘70s. The group’s Facebook bio simply reads “psychedelic flashbacks, soundtracks for daydreams.” It would be unwise to miss this groovy group, so make sure you arrive when doors open.

Plum is also slated to play the Underground Music Showcase this July.

Ned Garthe Explosion will play first, blaring their explosion of rock.

Also hailing from Denver, the band is a mashup of party vibes, rock and aggressive vocals.

The Decemberists, Spoon, Courtney Barnett - May 27

Red Rocks is the place to be in May if you want to get down with your folky self with The Decemberists, and then do some dancing to the indie setlist of Spoon. The two groups will be coming together for a massive co-headliner at Red Rocks Amphitheater on May 27.

Pairing the two may seem odd due to the difference in genres, but it will undoubtedly be a show to remember.

Courtney Barnett, Australian singer-songwriter, will start off this concert with sweet, indie crooning and a witty attitude. Wilting, deadpan vocals are some of Barnett’s trademarks, and her album showcases some serious talent.

Her debut album, “Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes, I Just Sit” was released in March, and is available for free streaming so check it out before you head to see her.

With two headliners, and an obviously entertaining opener, the show is at

risk of selling out, so buy them on AXS ticketing as soon as possible.

Tame Impala, White Denim May 30

Groovy tunes, Australian accents, and neo-psych—this is what you will find at the Tame Impala show on May 30 at the Ogden. Tame Impala is band that is set to impress; the quintet was recently declared by Billboard as one of the best acts of Coachella 2015.

Tame Impala just announced its follow up to “Lonerisms,” an album that received wildly positive reviews from critics. The new album’s release date has yet to be announced, but Tame Impala has revealed it will be titled “Currents.”

The opener, White Denim, will start the show with a groovy, rock sound. The Texas natives have obvious influences from garage rock, psych rock and indie, creating a unique vibe that will capture anyone’s attention. Show up early to catch this talented group.

The show is sold out on the Ogden Theater website, but you can still snag some tickets on StubHub. For fans of: MGMT, Temples These are just a few of the concerts happening this May, so keep up-todate to learn about upcoming shows.

The Ogden, The Bluebird, Red Rocks, The Fillmore Auditorium and the HiDive are just a few of the venues in Denver that are constantly hosting shows, so pay special attention to their social media sites.

It’s also worthwhile to download BandsInTown—an app that automatically sends you an alert when your favorite bands have announced a show.

Stories vary in the degree of effect they have on their readers.

Some stories let the reader meander, send them for a swirl and exit the novel unharmed.

Other stories sneak up on the reader, photo courtesy of amazon.com John Hart’s “Iron House”. knock them down and then help them stand. And then there are the stories that hit the reader hard and fast, keep the reader stumbling to get up and then leave them on wobbly knees.

The novel “Iron House” by John Hart is seated deep within the last category, so consider this the warning label.

“Iron House” opens with Michael, an experienced and lethal killer embedded in a life of organized crime in New York City. However, Michael is in love with a woman named Elena: she is carrying his child and she doesn’t know about the life of crime he’s now trying to escape.

The only reason Michael is still alive is because old and withering Otto Katain demanded Michael be left alone.

Upon Otto’s death, authority transfers to his son Stevan, who has no qualms about eliminating both Michael and Elena. Michael drags Elena out of town, prepared to go on the run to keep her safe until a phone call and a new threat from Stevan derails his plans. Soon, Michael finds himself on the doorstep of Senator Vane, wife Abigail Vane and their adopted son Julian—Michael’s younger brother who he hasn’t seen in 23 years.

All of this and a little more is packed within the first four chapters of this 56-chapter novel, so the excitement is only beginning. Hart weaves a masterful story; his characters all have leagues of depth which are immediately apparent.

For example, Michael is an orphan who became a contract killer within organized crime who is now attempting to live clean for the woman he loves. Each and every character has their own twisted background, allowing them to be nestled within this exceedingly complicated story.

Hart’s plotlines are intense works of sculpture as they jump, circle, flip and turn constantly, finally finding a relatively calm resting place on the very last page. Still, outside of the inexplicably human characters and the plotlines that leave readers breathless, Hart manages to make his writing beautiful. He casually places thoughtful and unique descriptions throughout the novel, giving them a subtle but affecting presence.

“Iron House” compiles issues from various walks of life into one thrilling story. The problems that each character faces are seamlessly braided together, causing readers to tingle with anticipation once the threads start to converge. There are a number of differing issues through which a reader is able to connect to this story, including the idea of being an orphan, the danger of organized crime, the undeniable intrigue of murder and the determination to know the truth.

This novel is not one for the faint of heart. In all its honesty, it is brutal and cruel in various ways. Hart doesn’t shelter readers from the realities that his characters must face, so he doesn’t shy from situations and descriptions of violence and depravity. However, Hart also highlights morality, family, honor, love and fighting for all that is held closest to the human heart.

The Denver Center for the Performing Arts alongside the city’s five professional sports team make for easy access to entertainment year-round. A dark horse in the entertainment realm in Denver is the vast number of art theaters in the city.

The Mayan

110 Broadway, Denver, CO The Mayan is one of the most unique theaters in all of Denver. First and foremost the theater is in a great location—just down Broadway between 1st and 2nd Avenues— and the building itself is unlike any other theater in the city. The structure embodies the name of the theater with thematic interior design in both the main atrium and the theaters themselves.

An additional plus for the theater is the variation among each individual screening room. Although it is certainly more comfortable to be in the main theater, it can be a nice change of pace not to be in a cookie-cutter room each time you go back to the Mayan.

Lastly, the largest benefit of the Mayan is the quality of the movies they screen.

For those movie-goers who seek out plot and character heavy films, this is the place to find the best of the best of independent films. An in-building bar is also a plus for those who are of age.

Chez Artiste

4150 E. Amherst, Denver, CO The Chez Artiste, like the Mayan, is owned by Landmark Theatres, and offers plenty of high quality independent films for Denver movie audiences. The theater does not offer quite the same unique feel of the Mayan but rather creates a more homesweet-home type of atmosphere.

The main lobby is small and homey, with

only a minimal concession stand, which tells us that the films are the true focus of the Chez. The lobby isn’t the only offering of comfort, as the theaters themselves also offer a sense of coziness. With smaller, less stadium style theaters, audiences almost feel like they are a part of an early, or even private, screening.

Elvis Cinemas

7400 E. Hampden, Denver, CO Elvis Cinemas offers something of the utmost importance to college students: cheap tickets. At $3.50, the price of admission is welcoming and affordable.

Of course, that discounted price comes with a catch: the movies at the Elvis are often those that have already come and gone from big-budget and independent film theaters.

Showing movies that have already left other theaters is not necessarily a huge negative, and also has its perks. The Elvis may be the only place to catch a popular film before it takes a long hiatus to be released on DVD, or an award-nominated film before the big award shows.

DU delinquent in addressing student debt Nikki Frick Social Media Director

There are plenty of articles addressing the problem of student loan debt. The average amount for students hovers around $25,000, according to a recent study by The Institute for College Access and Success. Reporters discuss the implications on students and the economy.

What many of these reports neglect to address is the issue of financial literacy: many students don’t know what they’re getting themselves into until they’re in trouble. To fight this impending catastrophe, DU should offer more incentives for students to learn about their budget and debt.

A recent study by the Program for International Student Assessment showed that American high school students lag behind other countries in financial literacy. It isn’t likely that the gap closes once they reach college.

With an already expensive higher education system, the effects can be very pronounced. The St. Louis Federal Reserve, for example, reports that about 27 percent of federal loans default.

While many blame this on the high cost of tuition (which is a large part of the issue), an important factor we’re neglecting is students’ ability

to understand budgeting, loans and general finance.

When discussing debt to current college students, the issue is clear. Most students know how much debt they will have upon graduation, but it’s rare to find a student that knows how long it will take to pay off or how to budget their income to ensure they have emergency funds. As a result, many students would default on loans with any type of financial difficulty simply because they didn’t know how to budget for potential obstacles.

DU’s initiatives, like many reports on student debt, have begun to address the high cost of tuition. In the Engaging Community portion of Imagine DU, the administration has created policies to centralize financial aid and raise funding for financial aid. These policies are definitely a step in the right direction to reduce the issue of student debt. However, they do not address the financial literacy that students need no matter how much debt they have.

The Office of Financial Aid at DU has many helpful resources for understanding loans on their website and they have an email list for students interested in more information. Additionally, DU is hosting Money Smart Week, April 21-24, with drawings for attendees.

However, DU still needs to be even more active in providing financial information to students.

The university could require students to attend an annual session regarding particular aspects of finances. Another option could be to incentivize financial information sessions that are held more frequently than the single Money Smart Week. For instance, students could receive advanced admission to on-campus events throughout the year or discounts at the bookstore by attending information sessions, providing incentive to every

attendee, rather than a chance at a single prize.

Of course, long-term and widespread solutions are needed to address the broader issue of student debt. Colleges across the country will need to reduce tuition and high schools need to provide financial literacy as a part of their required curriculums. However, until we get to that point, DU can take a few small steps to ensure that our own students do not fall into default.

On April 21-24, DU is hosting Money Smart Week to provide students with financial infromation to help students with their finances, however DU can do more to provide students with financial guidance.

Campus construction prevents building renovations Adrian Bogart Opinions Editor With an increasingly complex, technologically advanced and dynamic world, DU has attempted to create a more modern campus through building a whole new infrastructure to provide students the tools they need to succeed in their future endeavors. From creating the Daniel Felix Ritchie School for Engineering and Computer Science to expanding the Josef Korbel School of International Studies, DU is advancing its ability to provide students with advanced institutions that improves students’ education.

However at the same time, the University has turned a blind eye to improving other critical aspects of student life and existing infrastructure, such as improving dorm facilities and modernizing older classrooms. DU has tunnel vision, intently focused on building the university of the future,

while neglecting the university of the past. In order to move forward, DU must heavily invest in modernizing its existing infrastructure, or risk leaving half of campus in a dark age cursed with derelict and decrepit buildings.

Throughout the past couple of years, DU has launched multiple initiatives, such as the ASCEND campaign and Imagine DU. These initiatives have collected huge donations, initiated multiple projects to create new academic programs and resources on campus and dreamt of a high-tech campus fit for the 21st century.

Yet, within these carefully designed plans allocating millions of dollars to new programs and buildings, there is little to no discussion about modernizing existing buildings and facilities that most directly affect student life. There is no publicly announced plan to renovate Halls, Towers and JMac dorms, which all consistently have problems with commonly used resources, such as washers, dryers and elevators and lack

modern amenities to make dorms more enjoyable and hospitable. There is no publicly announced plan to renovate Sturm Hall either, which hosts an incredible amount of classes but still resembles the classrooms of the past, with a projector being the most advanced piece of technology in the room. With $490 million raised from the ASCEND campaign, a $460 million endowment fund and net assets of $1.2 billion, there is no mention of renovating and recreating the buildings of the past.

Even discussions about renovating old buildings, such as plans to improve the Driscoll Student Center, have gone nowhere for years and there have been no serious discussions by DU to create a better student center that students would want to use on a daily basis and be a center for students to relax, socialize and have fun.

USG’s Secretary of Community Partnerships Adam Hammerman has consistently advocated for a renovated student center that would be

better utilized and more accessible to students, but as he stated in a previous Clarion article, projects like the new John J. Sie International Relations complex and the Daniel Felix Ritchie School of Engineering and Computer Science take priority over renovating Driscoll.

Instead of focusing on improving existing infrastructure and making the best out of what DU already has, the University has an almost bizarre fixation with constantly building for the future, while the rest of campus remains in the past. While DU tries to move forward into the future and build DU of tomorrow, it is doomed to remain in the past if the University does not invest in renovating and improving its existing infrastructure.

It is essential that the University begin to evaluate how it can improve and develop its existing academic buildings and residence halls and actually fund renovations to improve the infrastructure that already exists on campus.

The consequences of #FightFor15 Eagle Eye Roderick O’Dorisio Financial Manager The greatest positive force in a market economy is competition. However, when the government interferes with fair market operations, positive outcomes become distorted. When federal or state governments raise the minimum wage, jobs are destroyed, and many minorities and unskilled workers are removed from the job market.

To my skeptics and adversaries: This is not an opinion.

This is a deep-rooted pillar of modern economic philosophy.

Last week, thousands of fast food workers across 230 cities in America openly protested for a minimum wage raise to $15 an hour under the banner #FightFor15.

The issue of minimum wage has become a primary bone of contention for the progressive left. They believe that by raising the minimum wage, they are directly helping the poor who desperately need that money to “live comfortably.” The irony of the situation, however, is that the progressive Left is doing nothing of the kind. In fact, raising

the minimum wage will bring about a whole host of negative and unintended consequences for the very people the dogooder Left is trying to help.

The minimum wage law can best be described as follows: Businesses must discriminate against people with low skills. That’s honestly how the law is interpreted. If I want to employ an individual with a skillset that justifies a $5/hr. wage, I legally cannot do that because that individual must be paid $7.25—the current minimum wage rate. If I do decide to hire this individual, I must engage in charity. Nothing is wrong with charity, but many employers are not in the position to engage in this kind of charity. As a result, this individual with a low skillset will be unemployed.

In response to the supporters of the $15 minimum wage, The Blaze recently published an exceptionally appropriate letter detailing the absurdity of the argument. How can a logical person feel entitled to a $29,000 annual salary for doing a job that requires “no skill, no expertise, and no education?”

To put this in a greater perspective, a $15 minimum wage would place fast food workers on the same pay scale as dental assistants, emergency medical technicians, auto mechanics, geologists, bank tellers, teachers and even some police officers. These jobs

require years of education and training and are undeniably more complicated than refilling a soda fountain or serving a frosty. As the Blaze correctly pointed out in their letter, fast food jobs are menial, mindless and fundamentally worth very little to society. These jobs are not intended to be career paths, and people who believe otherwise are delusional.

For purposes of our discussion, however, let’s assume that the minimum wage does increase. What happens next?

Over the last decade, Congressional Democrats have proposed several bills to increase the minimum wage with the most prominent one being the Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2013. Although Senate Republicans blocked this bill early last year, the idea of a $10.10 minimum wage has gained increasing momentum from both sides of the aisle in recent months.

At the same time the drafting of the Fair Minimum Wage Act began, Amazon.com purchased the Kiva automated sorting system for $775 million. This was not a coincidence. By unveiling its new automated warehouse robots, the $157 billion company immediately sliced its operating costs by 20 percent. The exact same response will occur with the fast food industry.

We have witnessed sluggish employment growth for

the last 10-15 years, but the most troubling statistic of all is that in 2000, job growth suddenly decelerated, but productivity remained robust.

The reason for this decoupling between job growth and productivity is primarily due to the unrelenting rise of artificial intelligence and automation.

If the minimum wage is increased, companies like San Francisco-based Momentum Machines will see an immediate rise in demand for its flagship product—a fully automated robot that can grind meat, slice tomatoes, grill patties, and wrap burgers. The apparatus is able to produce over 360 burgers per minute.

“Our device isn’t meant to make employees more efficient,” says Momentum Machines co-founder, Alexandros Vardakostas, “It’s meant to completely obviate them.”

Kiosk touchscreens are replacing cashiers, tablets are replacing servers, and fully automated robots are replacing fry-cooks. These are the consequences of a higher minimum wage.

The debate is a matter of simple economics — when you tax something, you get less of it.

Obviously, ending poverty and providing people with additional income are praiseworthy goals. But remember, there are no free lunches in this world.

Daniels: cash cow or money pit?

If there is any noticeable discrepancy among DU facilities, it’s that the Daniels Business School’s are much nicer than that of DU’s other schools.

Clearly, Daniels has a comparatively significant endowment fund. Is this a reason to believe that Daniels offers a better education than other DU schools?

That is far from true.

Although Daniels receives significant donations, other schools offer unique programs and opportunities to create a comprehensive, creative education.

The Daniels Business School 2013-2014 Annual Report shows that in the Fiscal Year 2014, Daniels received $4.7 million in donations.

Through the ASCEND campaign alone, Daniels raised $94.2 million. These funds support everything from academic programs, scholarships and building projects like the Margery Reed renovation.

It’s difficult to say that it’s “unfair” that Daniels receives so much funding. Much of it is raised from outside sources and alumni willing to donate to the program. After all, money is the nature of business, so it makes sense that alumni would be interested in supporting the university through financial donations.

Daniels also consistently ranks well, especially in specialty programs like the Fritz Knoebel Hospitality School and the real estate program. However, funding isn’t a requisite for academic success.

DU, for instance, had an endowment of $403,467,000 in 2013, which is the 179th out of a total of 849 Canadian and American universities’ endowments. Comparatively, it isn’t a very large endowment, but DU consistently ranks well in academics.

Other schools within DU also receive significant endowment funding. For example, the Josef Korbel School of International Studies received a significant $17 million grant from the Sie family. However it does not receive as significant funding and donations consistently.

Nonetheless, its graduate school ranks 11th in the world, according to the 2014 Ivory Tower Survey, while the undergraduate and PhD programs also benefit from

a variety of events, alumni connections and academic programs.

As a result, although Daniels benefits from advanced facilities and special opportunities, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it is a better program than the rest of DU. By the same coin, students shouldn’t be concerned about any uneven distribution of funding. Business schools will likely receive more funding and endowment because of their nature. International studies schools will also likely have more visiting diplomats and science programs will have more access to research opportunities. None of these are disproportionate to the rest of the university. Rather, they are a reflection of the nature of their program.

Despite the relative equality of educational opportunities at DU, administration should be careful to ensure they continue. They are riding the line and nearing special treatment to Daniels. As a result, administration should make an active effort at ensuring that all students have equal access to on-campus resources, especially financial aid and career counseling.

Additionally, DU should continue to reach out to non-business alumni to offer unique opportunities to speak with alumni, network and engage in research in every academic program.

Without special attention to non-business opportunities, Daniels funding may inhibit academic diversity, which is a particularly strong trait of DU.

Pioneer lacrosse wins final home game 13-9

The brisk and windy afternoon of April 18 was not only reminiscent of a typical autumn day in Colorado, but also of a team that just recently began its fall ball season.

Sticks were a little rusty. Passing and catching wasn’t quite up to par. Players weren’t quite familiar with the offense. The game didn’t show the kind of crispness often times associated with mid-March lacrosse, where teams are supposed to be hitting their stride going into the NCAA Tournament.

And it certainly isn’t something you would expect from the fifth-ranked team in the nation.

No. 5 Denver never truly looked comfortable in an unimpressive 13-9 win over Providence College. The Friars have not yet won a game in the Big East Conference, while this was the fourth Big East win for the Pioneers.

The Pioneers found themselves in a hole early, down 2-0, and would not score until the 13:46 mark of the second quarter.

Denver was down 5-3 at the end of two quarters, and gave up a goal with seven seconds to go in the first half.

Sure, I understand the notion, even the delight, of the upset. And yes, when you’re no. 5 in the nation, teams can inexplicably rise to the occasion and pull off the upset.

But, come on, Pios.

Providence lost soundly to fellow Big East opponent St. John’s University 17-7, a team that Denver walloped 18-5. Georgetown University also beat Providence 9-6.

Likewise, the Pioneers smoked the Georgetown Hoyas 19-7.

The soft performance seemed even more inexplicable when you take a closer look. It was Senior Day at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium—the last regular season game that seniors would step on the field sporting crimson and gold. In other words, there was added incentive to make the game memorable, in order to send the seniors off in style.

Thankfully the Pioneers have one of the top (if not the top) FOGO (faceoff, get off) guy in the nation in freshman Trevor Baptiste (Denville, New Jersey), who went a

nearly-impeccable 22-of-24 from the faceoff x. If Baptiste didn’t keep providing the Denver offense with more possessions, the headlines might’ve been saying something else.

Both senior Wes Berg (Coquitlam, British Columbia) and sophomore Connor Cannizzaro (Cazenovia, New York) started to turn the tide for the Pioneers in the third quarter, combining four of the five consecutive goals to start the second half, which helped the Pioneers reclaim an 8-5 lead.

Berg looked every bit the Tewaaraton Award candidate and school record-holder

in points and goals that he is, dishing out two assists and scoring three goals.

Denver will face Marquette University on April 25 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This is the last season game for the Pioneers before the Big East Tournament begins on April 30.

It almost goes without saying, but I guess I’ll say it anyway, since that’s why I’m here. The Pioneers need to start playing like the fifth best team in the nation, especially if they want to beat a stingy and nationally ranked Marquette team.

Q: How did you begin playing tennis?

A: I used to do gymnastics when I was younger. I quit because practice got too long for me at the time. One day when I was ten, my dad and I saw a sign on the side of the road that said, “For tennis lessons call this number” so we called. That’s how I met my first coach and I picked it up from there.

Q: How were you recruited by DU and what made you choose DU? A: DU saw me at Winter Nationals in Arizona and I met the assistant coach and he started watching me. My dad started talking to him and then the coach was emailing me. We built a relationship, then I talked to head coach and the bond kept growing. I just love Colorado and the academics here are great, too so I chose DU. Q: What has been the highlight of your career so far?

A: I won the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regionals the two years I was able to play. I’m undefeated and the winner gets into the national indoors, which is just like the NCAA, but smaller. I have won singles both

years and doubles this past year with Alex Gasson. In singles this season, I was down a set and the guy was serving against me. I was able to make a comeback and won the finals. It was a close one. In doubles, we were never close to losing.

Q: What does the rest of the season look like?

A: We have conference next weekend.

We’ve had an unbelievable year and it’s the highest our team has been ranked in a long time. We’re done with the regular season now, but if we win conference again, we will go to NCAAs two weeks after that.

Q: What are your goals for the postseason?

A: The goal is always to win an NCAA or at least get a couple rounds in. My freshman year, we won a round which has never been done before at DU and we want to go further. The goal right now is to become All-Americans in the Sweet 16.

Q: How do you prepare yourself before a competition?

A: Before competition, we’ll blast music in the vans or on the courts.

For me individually, I just try to get focused and not mess around too much. Getting ready with the team is the most important part.

Pioneer Hockey Award Ceremony sends off seniors Carolyn Angiollo Staff Writer

On April 17, DU’s hockey season came to a close with the 59th Annual DU Hockey Awards Evening. The ceremony was hosted by the voice of Denver hockey: Jay Stickney, who addressed the victories and memories from the Pioneer’s successful season. Stickney is the announcer at all home hockey games.

“We were the number one scoring team in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference [NCHC] this year, when we were last the year before. Winning the first round for our seniors who had three years of losing in the first round of the NCAA tournament was huge,” said head coach Jim Montgomery.

The Pioneer hockey team was the best that it has been in a long time. The team said goodbye to seven outstanding seniors: Larkin Jacobsen (Sioux City, Iowa), Josiah Didier (Littleton, Colorado), Daniel Doremus (Aspen, Colorado), Zac Larazza (Scottsdale, Arizona), Ty Loney (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania), Matt Tabrum (Colorado Springs, Colorado) and Joey LaLeggia (Burnaby, British Columbia).

Four of the seven graduating seniors are currently playing on teams in the American Hockey League (AHL) in hopes of being pushed to the National Hockey League (NHL) level by their respective teams. Didier is drafted by the Montreal Canadiens, Doremus by the San Jose Sharks, Loney by the Anaheim Ducks and LaLeggia by the Edmonton Oilers.

At the ceremony, Jacobsen won the award for Most Improved Player. He scored 10 points this season from five

goals and five assists. He also scored four of the five game winners; two of them back-to-back against Colorado College on Feb. 20 and 21. For Jacobsen, the memories he made at DU are everything. He also won the Dr. Art Mason Memorial Award for Top Scholar-Athlete. Graduating with a 3.98 GPA, Jacobsen will be using his degree in finance at Goldman Sachs in the coming months.

“I will always remember how I felt every time I walked into that locker room, onto the ice and into war with my brothers,” Jacobsen said.

During the ceremony, Larazza discussed that being a true Pioneer is all about being passionate. Next to speak was Tabrum, who, after getting a little choked up, gave some advice to his younger teammates.

“To the returning players, enjoy it while it lasts because in the blink of an eye, you will be up here giving this speech,” he said.

All the senior players who were not in attendance, with the exception of Loney, sent in videos to thank their coaches, families and teammates for a great career at DU. Doremus sent a video from the Worcester Shark’s locker room.

“I have to thank my teammates. It’s been hands down the best four years of my life. The memories I have with you guys I’ll never forget. I can’t believe how quickly it goes,” Doremus said in his video.

Award, Didier: Best Defensive Player, and Trevor Moore (Thousand Oaks, California) and Heinen: Best Offensive Player.

An award for community service was given to the team as a whole, which was accepted by team captain Arnold.

The award for Most Valuable Player was given to LaLeggia, who fittingly scored his first pro-hockey goal for the Oklahoma City Barons during the ceremony.

His new team went on to win 3-0 over the Iowa Wild in the AHL’s playoffs. LaLeggia was also given the award for Star of the Year after being named first star of the game five times, second star of the game two times and third star of the game three times.

The inaugural Daniel Ritchie Spirit Award was given to Jim Wiste. Wiste played for the Pioneers in the 1960s before playing in the NHL for the Chicago Blackhawks, Vancouver Canucks and the World Hockey League. Wiste now runs the Campus Lounge, which is located on University Boulevard and is a hot spot for DU hockey fans. During the season, Wiste gave the team a peptalk about what it is like to compete in the NCAA tournament and at the ceremony, he gave a few parting words to the seniors.

“Seniors, it’s time you change your jerseys. You’re alumni now, but we need you [in terms of the program]. We set the bar high and everybody is chasing us,” Wiste said.

Although the 2014-2015 season has officially come to a close, the players, coaches, families, alumni and fans are excited for what the future holds.

again,” Montgomery said. “That’s what Denver hockey is about. It’s a new puzzle next year. We are losing seven key players that played prominent roles on our team. And we’re excited about our freshman class that is coming in with the players that are returning, but it’s really too early to say where we’re going to be. We’ll assess what we have at the beginning and see where the pieces fit. We might be a totally different team next year.”

Denver’s third-ranked women’s club lacrosse team is on the brink of receiving yet another National Tournament bid.

Despite falling 10-5 to the University of Utah this past weekend during Regionals, the Pioneers have maintained

their no. 3 ranking throughout the season, and compiled a 8-3 regular season record. Within its respective league (Rocky Mountain Women’s Lacrosse League East II), Denver finished with a 3-1 record, behind only the Air Force Academy.

The top 12 teams in the nation will compete at the Women’s Club Lacrosse Association (WCLA) Division II Tournament held May 6-9 in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

The Pioneers hit the ground running to open their season. Denver played the

two top-ranked teams in the nation, first against Utah (no. 2) and then Duke University (no. 1). Both Utah and Duke dominated Denver, trouncing the Pioneers 14-3 and 15-5, respectively. Duke has not lost a game yet this year. The Pioneers showed noticeable improvement from the team’s previous loss to Utah, this time falling by only five points.

Following two consecutive opening losses, the Pioneers responded with a six-game win streak, which was highlighted by an 11-10 win over sixthranked Concordia University Irvine. It

was Concordia’s only loss of the season.

The win streak was snapped after Air Force beat Denver by a 9-8 margin.

Last year, the team earned a 7-2 regular season record, and finished the tournament as the seventh-ranked team in the nation.

“If we receive the bid to Nationals, it will be a great weekend of lacrosse,” said captain and senior defender Megan Dekutoski. “There are a lot of competitive teams in our division, but we have the ability to play with them and hopefully finish nationals in the top five.”

Rockies round-up: What to know about this season Updates from Denver’s many professional sports teams, every season

Denver’s professional baseball team, the Colorado Rockies, opened their 2015 regular season on April 6 on the road against the Milwaukee Brewers. As has become a trend in the last few years for the Rockies, they started out strong in their first few games. The team defeated the Brewers with scores of 10-0, 5-2 and 5-4 during the three game series behind manager Walt Weiss.

After this three-game road trip, the Rockies returned home for the official home opener against the Chicago Cubs.

Denver was abuzz after the team’s sweep of the Brewers. Fans crowded Coors Field in anticipation of watching their home team. The Rockies remained hot by winning their first game of the series 5-1, but subsequently dropped the last two games to the visiting Cubs.

The Rockies would continue with their streaky ways, sweeping the San Francisco Giants in a three-game series

on the road before getting swept at home by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the same week. The Rockies’ record is now 7-5, good for third in their division, which is the National League (NL) West.

This is a team anchored by two superstars in Troy Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez. They will need to stay healthy this season if the Rockies want a chance at making the playoffs. They’re also getting help from some younger hitters, as second baseman D.J. LeMahieu currently leads the team with 19 hits. Stud third baseman Nolan Arenado is sporting a solid .644 slugging percentage, while his defense remains spectacular.

DU student Stone Guise, a member of the club baseball team and a Colorado native, commented on the Rockies’ performance thus far. “[The Rockies] started off the season strong, but had a bad series against the Dodgers recently. Hopefully they don’t fall off now like they have in years past.

Arenado and Dickerson are young guys looking awesome, which is hopefully a sign of the future,” said Guise.

The Rockies’ pitching core is a mixed bag for 2015, with some experience and

a whole lot of young guns. Jordan Lyles, Eddie Butler and Tyler Matzek are three starting pitchers 24 or younger with a lot of growth left. They sport earned run averages of 3.50, 2.25 and 1.80, respectively. Kyle Kendrick was acquired in the off season to bring a veteran presence to the staff.

Besides a miraculous World Series run in 2007 that ultimately fell short to the Boston Red Sox, the Rockies have had only one postseason appearance in the last 20 years. They have been largely unsuccessful at adapting to their highaltitude home. It’s easier for balls to go farther at high altitude, which isn’t great news for Colorado pitchers. In addition to that fact, the overall talent, durability and scouting of the Rockies has struggled.

Over the course of the season, the Rockies will play a total of 162 games.

Professional baseball is a marathon, not a sprint, which is why Colorado’s early season heroics always needs to be taken lightly. Hopefully this team can shake their summer demons and deliver a playoff-worthy season, but history shows their early season success may be short-lived.

Women’s soccer falls to Nebraska in spring matchup Braiden Albrecht-Reed Senior Reporter

The DU women’s soccer team lost their final exhibition game of the spring season on April 18. The University of Nebraska downed the Pioneers of 3-0.

Sophomore midfielder Brooke Boothe (Ontario, California) gave her thoughts on how the exhibition game went.

“I think we played pretty well for the most part. We came out hard from the beginning and worked well as a team. We made a few poor mistakes which led to goals against, but this was definitely our best spring game as a team,” Boothe said.

It had been a busy week for the team, as they also played two games on April 12. The Pioneers played exhibition matches against Colorado State University and University of Northern Colorado, two fun matches to gauge where the team is at against quality competition. DU lost to Colorado State and tied Northern Colorado 0-0.

This was a good way to end the spring season, and I think we have a really good foundation for fall next year,” Boothe said.

The team is coached by Jeff Hooker, who is in his 24th season of coaching. He took over the DU program in 1992.

In his first 22 seasons with the team, he posted at least eight wins each year.

From 2006 to 2013, the women’s team has an incredible record of 138-29-14 overall with an equally impressive 71-7-5 in-conference record.
