New USG Pres: “Our agenda is your agenda” Hayden Johnson and Natalie Casey defeat Alisa Brown and Marin Klostermeier in USG race by clarion staff
After a week-long campaign for the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) Presidential and Vice Presidential seats, Hayden Johnson and Natalie Casey won their respective seats in the election against Alisa Brown and Marin Klostermeier—around 1,800 students voted in the election, according to Carl Johnson, USG advisor. Johnson and Casey were excited to have won the elections and commended Brown and Klostermeier for a wellrun campaign. “We are so humbled that we were given this position by the student body,” said Casey. “We’re so excited that people trust us to lead and direct them and kind of be the face of the student body. Also, thank you to Alisa and Marin, that’s something we definitely want to say. We hope they stay involved.”
Brown and Klostermeier reciprocated Casey’s comments in a joint Facebook status update published on Friday, April 25 shortly after election results had been announced. “[Friday] we did not win in our bid to become President and Vice President of USG, but that does not mean we will stop fighting for change on this campus … We believe in a future for DU that includes the voices of students who have been sidelined in the past … We would like to congratulate Natalie and Hayden on their success; we look forward to working with you to fulfill our shared dream of a better DU.” Carl Johnson also commended the two groups of candidates for their work during the campaigning week and wishes to see involvement from both Johnson and Casey and Brown and Klostermeier. “I think that Hayden and Natalie, and Alisa and Marin ran a nice, smooth and respectful campaign,” said Johnson. “I think they were both good candidates and managed the week well. to an end, Undergraduate Student Government’s (USG) Ritchie School of Engineering and Computer Science (RSECS) Senator Alicia Everett said the new building will be of great benefit to future DU students. “I think it’s symbolic of the growth and new life that the science, specifically engineering, is receiving from the school,
and from the really generous donation of Daniel Ritchie,” said Everett. “It’s an incredible opportunity for the department. Growth in the department is needed. It’s a high demand career once we get out of college. Having better facilities, better funding and better resources will lead to better learning for future students.”
John Greene demo begins Trans Pioneers, Senior Reporter
Demolition on DU’s John Greene Hall began in the snow on Monday, April 14, and is expected to be completed in early May. The $90,000 demolition process will pave the way for a new building to be built over John Greene, with the groundbreaking ceremony taking place on May 6, according to Linda Lautenbach, construction project manager of DU Facilities and Management. “The Daniel F. Ritchie School of Engineering and Knoebel Center for the Study of Aging building will be built on the site of the former John Greene Hall,” said Lautenbach. “The general contractor for the new building will start construction in mid-summer, sometime near July 1.” John Greene Hall originally opened in 1958 when Chester Alter served as chancellor of DU. In February, a single altered bathroom sign sparked a campuswide debate. After student members of the Social Justice Living and Learning Community announced their plan to open a gender neutral bathroom in first year residence hall JohnsonMcFarlane, disparate voices engaged with the idea, both in support and opposition, marking another step for the rising attention to DU’s transgender community. A group long kept systematically silent, the transgender community nationwide is growing its
voice, with DU standing as a microcosm of the dominoes of awareness falling towards increased attention to the ‘T’ of LGBTQIA. Though this is the most recent event to spark conversation, DU’s transgender community and allied students and staff have been building the conversation for months. In October, a group of transgender students, faculty members, staff members and allies launched a campus-wide look at campus departments to assess institutional barriers and access for people who identify as transgender. The group, led by Center for Multicultural Excellence Director of Educational Programs and LGBTIQA Services Thomas Walker.
