Festival of Nations gets makeover, now CultureFest John Poe News Editor

It’s Spring Quarter, which means CultureFest is right around the corner. The DU 2015 CultureFest, formerly known as Festival of Nations, will be held on April 10 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Driscoll Ballroom.

CultureFest is free to attend and open to the public.

Unlike previous years, CultureFest will be on a Friday. This is because it will be complementing the Internationalization Summit, which takes place on Thursday, March 9 and Friday, March 10.

“CultureFest is a DU annual event,” said Emilie Wardrip, a Performance Coordinator of the

2015 CultureFest. “It has been going on for 35 years and this year it is rebranded as CultureFest.”

“It used to be festival of nations, but we rebranded it specifically to be more inclusive of other cultures and not exclude so many student groups on the DU Campus that make up DU culture,” said Wardrip.

There has been a lot of discussion about changing the name of this event.

There are many of new aspects of CultureFest this year. According to Wardrip, CultureFest has been moved back to the Driscoll Ballroom, and the committee is also trying to promote CultureFest across social media with the hashtag, #CultureIs. “We are really excited for our performance lineup this year,” said Wardrip. “The performances will be going on throughout the entire event.”

Food and drinks will not be free, but they can be bought at the event with tickets from the welcome booth. Each ticket costs one dollar, so plan on buying as many tickets as dollars you want to spend.

After the mother gives birth, Davis says the study continues by following the infant and measuring the newborn’s stress and reactiveness.

The longitudinal study continues measuring stress hormones in the babies along with their reaction to stressful events. She plans to continue the study as long as her funding from The National Institute of Health allows her to do so and as long as her participants are willing to meet with researchers for testing.

Davis says she’s been working on this line of research for 12 or 13 years, and has worked at DU for almost three years. Davis started her research at the University of California, Irvine, where the first fetal participants in the study are now nearing adolescence.

“We have about 300 families that we’re following that we’ve been seeing

since early pregnancy,” said Davis.

Davis and Stout summed up their research findings with suggestions that more attention should be paid to the psychological health of pregnant mothers and that there is still much research to be conducted in regards to the effect of the prenatal environment on a child’s later development.

“We’re used to thinking about nutrition, we’re used to making sure that she isn’t exposed to toxins and that she isn’t taking drugs, but I think that mom’s psychological well-being and stress exposure during the fetal period is also really important,” said Davis.

“If I have learned anything doing this research, it is that who we are is not as simple as those experiences that we can remember. That time we are growing up in the womb is when we get our first glimpse of the environment that we have to prepare to live in, all thanks to mom,” said Stout.

HCC to host 2015 Mental Health Week Kellsie Brannen Lifestyles Editor

While mental health may not be on the forefront of many students’ minds on a day-to-day basis, the Health and Counseling Center has dedicated this week to putting the issue front and center. Mental Health Week kicked off April 6, with events dedicated to taking the stigma away from mental illness and raising awareness of the different mental struggles that many college students face.

The week includes a multitude of events, including mental health trivia, various movie screenings, stress and wellness evaluations, presentations on stress and other issues, a mental health symposium and free shirts and bracelets on Driscoll Bridge.

An entire schedule of events can be found on the Health and Counseling Center’s website.

While mental health may be easy to throw to the wayside, rates of mental illness on college campuses are startling. According to a report by the National College Health Association, one third of college students reported feeling so depressed that it was hard to function, half felt overwhelming anxiety in the past year and 8 percent seriously considered suicide.

To put this last statistic into perspective, suicide is the third leading cause of death for people from 15 to 24, according to a report by the CDC. However, while the statistics are startling, mental health is often not a priority when tests, internships and homework take precedent. It’s easy to think of ourselves as invincible, or

at least assume that mental illness is something that happens to others and not to us.

I can say from personal experience that realizing and admitting to yourself that you are mentally ill is not an easy task. It is easy to deny to yourself. “Everyone gets stressed out,” “Everyone is sad sometimes”,,and “I just need to snap out of it” can become phrases to deflect what can be a very serious problem. Whether it be because of a stigma surrounding mental illness, not wanting to be ‘dramatic’ or simply not knowing that what you are feeling is abnormal, there are plenty of barriers to diagnosis and treatment for the mentally ill.

However, any state of mind or pervading emotions that just doesn’t feel right are worth talking about with someone else. Whether you feel completely overwhelmed, have been feeling blue for an abnormal period of time or anything else feels off, talking with a friend or a counselor can not only help lift the weight from your shoulders, but can also help you understand when things have gone from normal to something more.

Likewise, if one of your friends has been acting a bit off, or seems more stressed than usual, it is always a good idea to see how he or she is doing. If it is a close friend, asking if they are okay or if anything is wrong is not only a kind gesture, but can make a big impact.

If you are especially concerned about a friend or acquaintance, submit a Pioneers CARE report to refer a student to the program, in which staff of Pioneers CARE will reach out to him or her and help find

resources to benefit their situation.

Our lives are so busy that making time just to relax and reflect on our own mental health may seem nearly impossible but it is paramount to be in touch with the state of your psyche. So take a few hours out of your week and make it out to a few of the events for Mental Health Week.

It is finally spring and Pioneers can pull themselves out of the hibernation they lived in during winter quarter.

However, many apartments, houses and dorm rooms might still be in winter mode—in other words, dark, grey and not at all lively. They need a serious spring cleaning and overhaul to brighten them up for the upcoming warm months.

Here’s how to make it happen.

Buy a plant A plant is a cheap and easy way to brighten a room and add some life and personality to a kitchen, living room or bedroom. There are so many to choose from and all of the seasonal plants for spring add festive color wherever they are placed.

Succulents are easy to take care of and perfect for the college student who is not home for very many hours a day or doesn’t have the best memory for taking care of living creatures— these plants only need watered once a week.

Being in the midst of Easter and Mother’s Day season, spring plants are popping up all over the place. In particular, there are many brightly colored orchids and perennial plants going on sale at the grocery stores like King Soopers and Safeway, so picking one up is easy and convenient.

For those who want something more fun and exciting, garden shops are starting to open back up as well. One option that is accessible for every Pioneer on campus is Garden Patch; this shop is within walking distance of DU, on Washington Street.

Another option for a plant to keep in an apartment or dorm is an herb like basil or mint. These plants make the place smell like an Italian kitchen or countryside garden. They also add an aesthetic touch and are easily accessible for cooking to freshen up some recipes.

Add a colorful touch In many student housing options, painting the walls or nailing large pictures to the wall is not always an option. A yellow throw pillow, brightly patterned kitchen rug or even some new mugs can go a long way in adding a festive touch to an apartment, house or dorm for spring. Pier One has novel mugs (some even in the shapes of owls and bacon) or Target and Kohls have spring products going on sale for a cheaper option.

Adding a fresh-smelling candle or air freshener is a great quick-fix.

Spring-scented candles or even simple air fresheners from the grocery store can give a room a whole new feel.

For those who are feeling lazy or don’t want to spend the money on a candle, taping a dryer sheet to the air conditioner vent or fan works almost as well. It just might need replaced a little more frequently.

In the kitchen The kitchen is a room where a few easy cleaning and organizational changes make a huge difference in not only aesthetic quality, but also in efficiency and convenience.

Use storage baskets or put your apples and oranges in bowls in the fridge and use baking soda to eliminate odors.

An easy way to clean a sponge and the microwave at the same time is to microwave a damp sponge to kill the bacteria on it. At the same time, the steam cause by the water evaporation will help clean it. After microwaving, it is one simple step to use the the newly sanitized sponge to clean the inside of the microwave.

Coffeemakers are appliances that generally get used every morning and do not receive the proper cleaning as students pour their morning cup and run out the door. An easy way to clean the coffeemaker in one step is to run one part vinegar and one part water through coffee maker, then just rinse out the pot before brewing another pot.

A couple more cleaning hacks For those who do not have an extendable Swiffer, wrapping a rubber band around a microfiber rag and putting it on the end of a broom is a perfect way to get hard-to-reach areas like the corners of walls and ceilings.

Rolling clothes in the dresser instead of folding them saves space and make clothes easier to find. It is one more five-minute fix that makes a huge difference.

No one wants to spend the wonderful warm weather days of spring digging through unorganized drawers to find a favorite pair of shorts or living in the cave-like conditions built in winter hibernation. With just a few easy steps, an apartment, dorm or house will be as ready for spring as everyone on campus is.

Despite last week’s random fit of snow, it is, in fact, spring, and a whole new season stands before us.

Students aren’t the only ones gearing up for new classes or preparing for their new jobs.

Most galleries I came across this past week are wrapping up their exhibits, which means that an abundance of new events and shows are about to flourish across Denver. Rather than focusing on one exhibit this week, I decided to present a few free noteworthy exhibits that students, or anyone for that matter, can enjoy as a way to start their season off right.

Meta Structures Where: Black Book Gallery 304 Elati St. Denver, Colorado 80223 When: April 11- May 3 Artists: Max Kauffman and Brian Robertson Cost: Free Black Book Gallery is a contemporary gallery that just moved to the Baker neighborhood. However, they have maintained their strong artist relationships and the belief that “the artist is just as important as the work,” as stated on their website.

Starting April 11, their new exhibit, Meta Structures, will collectively feature the work of Max Kauffman and Brian Robertson. Although these artists have different styles, they both combine two different states into their work: one of a recognizable reality and a

second of a dream-like state that takes viewers beyond reality.

Verging on the subject of surrealism, Kauffman incorporates certain architectural elements from our surroundings, such as a building, but distorts them to a point of almost complete nonrecognition, giving his work a sense of familiarity mixed with unknown chaotic elements.

“There’s always been a balance between hard realized things and unconscious flow/movement. I’ve often danced around that line, but been very aware of it, tweaking different balances of it but aiming for control in the moment…focusing on details instead of the big picture,” Kauffman says on the gallery website.

Robertson similarly plays with the mind’s different layers of consciousness. For example, his piece titled “L.A. Rover” is a surrealistic depiction of NASA’s space rover. Viewers are readily able to recognize the subject in the piece as the rover, yet no realistic or accurate symbols from the rover are used. His paintings evoke an uncanny emotion that places viewers in a common place state of confusion.

Brian Robertson’s “L.A. Rover” is featured in the Meta Structures exhibit at Black Book Gallery that takes a real-life object, a NASA Space Rover, and distorts it to a pseudo-realistic image.

Aptly named, Robertson’s Genetic Time Bomb series is that of colorful, abstract paintings, which were inspired

by Alzheimer’s. The disease plagues both his father and brother and doctors predicted he will also get it.

“Like any child, I study my father for clues to where the future may lie. Sometimes his world seems to be a blank slate, beautifully new. Other times a rush of memories leaves him emotional, with holes shot through stories that lead nowhere. Images peek through, but neither he nor I find a way to understand what they are. So I have turned things over to art,” said Robertson on the art gallery website.

His work displays layers upon abstract layers, which I interpret as the many layers that take form when revisiting a memory over and over again.

“In my art I search for the light that has been blocked out by the unconscious and stored in the deep recesses of the mind... So come walk through my mind and take a trip through darkness in search of the light,” says Spaulding on his personal website.

His black-and-white, graphite drawings explore a similar theme to that of the other artists I previously talked about: consciousness versus unconsciousness.

Spaulding self-reflects in an attempt to uncover a more honest self, an honest self that has been suppressed from outside influences, societal norms and one’s own mind.

What’s rare about this exhibit is the vast variety of work that will be on display. Ewing’s black-and-white landscape photographs will range in size, but at their largest will amount to 5x7 feet. Ewing has transformed the viewing experience by making bystanders feel as if they are in the physical landscape itself rather than admiring it from afar. His images include shots from across the United States but mainly focuses on the Denver area.

If you enjoy authentic and reasonably priced Mexican food with a casual dining experience, look no further than the Torta Grill, a small mom-and-pop shop brimming with authentic Mexican flavor located just past HighStreet and Colfax Avenue.

The walls are a vibrant red and decorated with paintings of Dia de los Muertos skeletons and sugar skull masks. There are a few counters to dine at, but other than that, there is little space to eat, which is something to keep in mind if you have a large group. However, if you’re looking for a place to pop in with a few friends or grab some amazing take out, this should be your go-to around the Colfax area.

They also deliver, which is a great alternative to the typical Jimmy Johns option if you’re too lazy to get out and go grab something.

The menu consists of a wide variety of tamales and tortas. The tortas— a type of Mexican sandwich— are the shop’s specialty (hence the name), though you can never go wrong with tamales, either. The recommended menu items, according to the Torta Grill’s website, are the Ivan Torta (chicken, bacon and cheese, $7.75), the Carlito Torta (homemade carnes, $8.25), the Torta Grill Especial (pork loin, breaded steak, ham, chorizo, eggs, franks, bacon and cheese, $9), the Hector Torta (chicken, eggs, chorizo and cheese, $7.75) and a cheese and green peppers tamale ($2).

Before my experience at the Torta Grill, I had never eaten a torta. Let me tell you, I had been completely missing out my entire life. With two pieces of thick, warm bread and various

foods in the middle, it’s like a regular sandwich that has been improved in every way.

The bread is more flavorful, has a better texture and is far thicker in order to hold all of the delicious fillings inside.

I had the Carlito Torta, which was absolutely delicious. In addition to the carnes, the torta also had beans and various other savory sauces, which complimented the meat perfectly.

The sandwich was great— honestly like nothing I’ve ever tried before. And at around $8, it certainly wasn’t too pricey considering how filling it was.

The restaurant also has a variety of beverages, including their specialty cucumber lemonade ($3.50). I ended up getting a horchata ($3.50), a sweet Mexican rice-milk drink. It was amazing, a perfect balance of sugar and cinnamon in a cool, refreshing beverage.

The next time that you’re in the Colfax area and are looking for a delicious and affordable bite to eat, head straight for Torta Grill. I guarantee that once you try a torta, you will never want a plain old sandwich again.

A Q&A with DU alumni and author John Devore Kate Rogers Contributing Writer Dr. John Edwin DeVore’s autobiography, “Sitting in the Flames: Uncovering Fear to Help Others,” is a personal record of a man’s ongoing journey as he confronts past emotional war scars and travels towards inner-peace.

DeVore wrote another book titled “Golfer’s Palette: a golfers’ guide to the perfect golf game” that incorporates the same method of self-reflection that he began to explore in “Sitting in the Flames.”

DeVore received his Ph.D. and MBA at the University of Denver, but his story doesn’t start there. To give a brief overview: DeVore studied at United States Military Academy, West Point, before serving two years of combat in the Vietnam War. Having first been stationed at Fort Carson, DeVore found himself back in Colorado during an attempt to transition from a life of combat to a life of business.

After graduating DU, DeVore took a class titled “Spiritual Models of Social Action” taught by Judith Simmer Brown at Naropa University in Boulder. From here, DeVore began the process of healing.

Q: Your autobiography, “Sitting in the Flames: Uncovering Fearlessness to Help Others,” offers hope and inspiration for persons other than yourself. What inspired you to write?

A: At the time I was going to school at Naropa University, and the program that I took there was the religious studies program, and the specific course that I was taking was called “Spiritual Models of Social Action,” and the instructor for that course was a woman by the name of Dr. Judith Simmer Brown.

Judith, as a matter of fact, wrote the foreword for “Sitting in the Flames” in the front of that book, so I always give her credit for saving my life.

Judith in class one day put a book on the corner of her desk, and she looked at me and said, “John you need to read that book.” The name of that book was “War is a Force that Gives Us Meaning” written by Chris Hedges...what he talks about in that book is that there’s a big difference between the myth that we create in our culture around the whole concept of war (i.e. it becomes a rallying point).

There’s a big contrast between that myth, or that rallying point of war, and the actual experience of war for a soldier that goes off and fights, and gets shot at and has to shoot other people. Underneath that, all the heroics and ego, is a lot of fear.

As a result of that book, I started then, with Judith’s help, going back and visiting my time in combat for two years. Judith had us write a lot of reflection papers...so out of those papers then, over a period of time, I said, “Gosh, you know, maybe these papers could end up in a book,” which they ended up doing.

Q: Within the header of your website is the phrase, “We can unleash the artist within!” Would you say this is a personal philosophy that dictates your writing style?

When and how did you unleash your inner artist?

A: It’s that artist that we free up, if we sit with our traumas and deal with our trauma, not run away from it...If you really have that

artist unleashed you can create the type of life that you want. We all have an artist within us. Each of us needs to find that artist, but the way we do that, in my opinion is... going to the breath, quiet[ing] the mind, mak[ing] a connection. And then, when you connect, that artist becomes unleashed.

Q: Do you have any new aftethoughts, post-publication?

Have you received any reader feedback that was of particular value or interest?

A: The answer to that is yes.

When I first wrote that first book, “Sitting in the Flames,” the change has been a real evolution from just an experience of war to an awakening about what I call this journey of life..I think the thing that has been the most humbling for me about having written “Sitting in the Flames” is to have a daughter or a son of a war veteran or a family member come up to me and say, “you know, for the first time in my life I’ve been able to reconnect with dad or mom about their war experience.”

As of March 30, DU students have access to use Microsoft’s Office 365 Cloud Collaboration Suite. The University has contracted with Microsoft for use of the extensive features of this software.

Every student is already registered for an account, and should have received an email with information and instructions on March 30 on how to use 365 Cloud.

With Microsoft’s Office 365 Cloud software, students, staff and faculty have access to 1TB of storage on OneDrive Cloud (that is equal to over 1000 GB, most likely enough to store everything from your college career). One Drive is a library—similar to Apple’s iCloud—where you can store, share and sync work across different devices. All the files in OneDrive are private unless users choose to share them.

Students will also have free downloads of the newest versions of Microsoft Office Pro Plus for personal Mac or PC computers and other Apple/Android devices, as well as the capability of creating, sharing and editing Microsoft Office documents through Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote in a web browser. Instead of

being locked into GoogleDocs every time you work on a group project, you can create documents in any Microsoft program and share them with the members of your group for editing.

Additionally, by the end of the quarter, Office 365 will be expanded to include student email with Microsoft Outlook instead of going through the DU website. If you had your DU email account forwarded to another account like Gmail or Yahoo, the new email account through Microsoft Office will also forward to that mailbox.

With Office 365 comes a few new features for existing Microsoft programs. In Word, you can now view and work with documents you created on another device or with Word Online. Power Point and Excel can now be accessed on any device, from a computer to a tablet to a smartphone.

Microsoft 365’s website at support. office.com has many useful tips for getting started.

University Technological Services had a series of informational and training sessions last week and should be holding more throughout the remainder of the quarter.

New ‘Daily Show’ host already in hot water

Chloe Barrett Contributing Writer “The Daily Show” has finally found its new host in comedian Trevor Noah. Since Jon Stewart announced in February that he’d be stepping down from the show after hosting for over 15 years, a handful of possible replacements have been considered. Speculations of potential new hosts had included Jason Jones, Samantha Bee, Tina Fey and Jessica Williams.

Unlike these prospects, Noah is a new name for many people as a recent addition to the Comedy Central show, having only joined in December 2014. Since then, he has appeared in only three segments with Stewart, one about Ebola, one about Boko Haram and one about a game of chess.

Beyond “The Daily Show,” Noah is also well-known in South Africa for

hosting his own late-night talk show, “Tonight With Trevor Noah,” a handful of radio programs and the South African Music Awards.

The 31-year-old also headlined a Showtime stand-up special last year and was the first South African comedian to appear on “The Tonight Show” and “The Late Show with David Letterman.”

Though relatively unknown to a U.S. audience, Noah has already stirred up some controversy lately over questionable Twitter activity that some have dubbed “sexist,” “racist” and “anti-Semitic.”

One of his unearthed tweets from 2009 involves Noah joking about striking a “Jewish kid” with his “German car.” Last May, Noah joked that, “Behind every successful Rap Billionaire is a double as rich Jewish man.”

Another tweet drew a sexual comparison between soccer player Lionel Messi and “Jewish chicks.”

Noah has also been called out for several other tweets insensitive toward women: “A hot white woman with ass is like a unicorn. Even if you do see one, you’ll probably never get to ride it.”

While some have brushed off concerns about the comedian, referring to the tweets as simply bad jokes, others have suggested his past remarks could present a problem. In fact, the debate over Noah has morphed from complaints about insensitive jokes from the past to a more important argument about whether he’s a good cultural fit for an American audience.

While most would agree that comedians should be awarded a wide berth—after all, sharp-edged humor normally draws a little blood—Noah won’t just be doing standup at some Brooklyn comedy club; he is taking over what’s become an influential American cultural franchise. Some have argued that his outsider perspective radically

shifts the context of his jokes and the way they will likely be received.

For Noah’s part, he issued what’s been dubbed a “non-apology” via twitter that stated: “To reduce my views to a handful of jokes that didn’t land is not a true reflection of my character, nor my evolution as a comedian,” which he deleted shortly after issuing.

The power of satire is driven by the necessity that audiences be ‘in’ on the joke; if Noah is going to successfully satirize, the audience needs to feel that they’re on his side and not the object of his ridicule. Jon Stewart has mastered this rare ability and has also been dubbed more trusted and accurate than MSNBC, so Noah has got some big shoes to fill.

With Stewart expected to step down from his hosting gig sometime between July and the end of 2015, Pioneers won’t have to wait long to gauge Noah’s performance.

TED speaker releases novel about immigration, race Abbie Randall Contributing Writer Increasing numbers of Americans have heard the name Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Originally from Nigeria, Adichie came to the United States for higher education. Her name has gained recognition and influence in recent years, largely in thanks to her nationally acclaimed novels and her prominent TED talk given in 2009 called “The Power of a Single Story” (a highly recommended talk, by the way, take some time to watch it). Adichie has a powerful way with words that is immediately evident on the first page—and the hundreds of pages that follow—of her novel “Americanah.”

Adichie crafts her novel in a fashion that is complicated, but sensible. She alternates between the perspectives of characters Ifemelu and Obinze, revealing stories of their pasts in conversation with the events of the present. Their narratives are woven together so the reader begins to understand where the two started and how they traversed the years to end up

where they are, and only then does it continue into how Ifemelu and Obinze can move forward. Adichie’s talent and craft for storytelling is apparent, as the stories of both Ifemelu and Obinze are undeniably compelling, evoking compassion and complete emotional engagement.

Ifemelu is a young woman originally from Nigeria and now living in Princeton, New Jersey, having recently completed a fellowship at Princeton University. We meet Ifemelu on a day she goes to get her hair braided as she prepares for her move back to Nigeria.

The details of her trip to the salon are interrupted by the story of her life up to this moment: leaving Nigeria, struggling in America, becoming successful and everything that has led to her upcoming return to Africa and to her former lover, Obinze.

We are then introduced to Obinze as he sits in traffic on his way home to his wife and child in Nigeria. His thoughts are in turmoil because of an email he’s received from Ifemelu. He doesn’t know how to feel about the return of the woman he once loved before time, distance and minimal contact tore them

DU Theatre showcases seniors’ work Jocelyn Rockhold Contributing Writer

It’s that time of year for DU seniors: graduating students are leaving soon, anxious about joining “the real world” and frantically writing resumes.

In addition to these strenuous experiences, the DU Theatre seniors are doing something different from their counterparts—they’re hosting a series of plays.

Beginning on April 8, senior theater majors will be putting on a series of works that are required as part of the DU Theatre Department capstone project. The event is dubbed “The DU Theatre Senior Capstone Festival,” and runs in two cycles; the first runs from April 8 to April 12 and the second will run from May 6 to May 10.

Each cycle encompasses a variety of different productions of varying lengths that cannot exceed 45 minutes (each is only one act.) These works are labors of love and tears; seniors spent at least one whole year working on these productions and practicing the needed skills for such a large project. Seniors had to choose their plays, select a design team, give instruction, audition and select a cast and, ultimately, direct their personal visions.

The productions have been announced for the first cycle and they are listed below. Luckily, with the purchase of one ticket an audience member gets to see all three productions. Tickets are only $10 dollars, and can be purchased on the Newman Center website.

DU Theatre Senior Capstone Festival Cycle 1 will be held in JMac Studios (located in the Johnson-McFarlane building.) Evening shows will be held on April 8, 9 and 10 at 7:30 p.m., while both a matinee (2 p.m.) and an evening show (7:30 p.m.) will be held on April 11 and 12.

“There Shall Be No Bottom”

Written by Mark O’Donnell, directed by Nicole Campbell According to the DU Theater department, “There Shall Be No Bottom,” a comedy, is a play about a play.This production is very “meta” in its content; this work is about bad acting and all of the hilarity and issues that come along with it.

The play includes Jeff “who can’t seem to remember his lines,” Joe, who always “skips ahead,” Jane, who can’t seem to part with her innocence and Jared, who is late for the play because he is stuck in traffic. Cast members include Danforth Webster, David French, Wren Schuyler and Sara Sachs.

“A Thing I Cannot Name”

Written by Matthew Minnicino, directed by Adeline Mann

“A Thing I Cannot Name” contains “martial and performance arts, naughty language, silly voices,and love [triumph] (maybe).” This production follows main characters Leo and Lee as they try to work out their romantic relationship, no matter the cost.

Adeline Mann, director, claims the piece as “a slice of meta-theater,” and while it may be comedic, the production also includes “moments of serious intensity and heightened reality and genuine emotion.” Cast members include Keegan Bockhorst and Ashley Campbell.

“Fissures (Lost and Found)”

Written by Steve Epp, Cory Hinkle, Dominic Orland, Dominique Serrand, Deborah Stein and Victoria Stewart, directed by Tony Ryan Described by the Theater Department as an “exploration of memory,”

this production describes memory and how it is affected through remembering and recall. “Fissures” tries to discover why we invent some of our memories and why we subtract some of our least desirable ones. “Fissures” is “written by five different people all contributing their own memories,” says director Tony Ryan.

Following the journey of a young man, a dead wife and two siblings, this production is an interesting and fresh take on human memory. Cast members include Garrett Biggs, Daniel Crumrine, Rachel Reidenbaugh, Thunder Butler and Aristotle Johns.

The second cycle of the DU Theatre Senior Capstone Festival has not yet been announced, but keep an eye on the DU Theatre Department website for updates on the second cycle and other future productions.

‘Game of Thrones’ kicks off new season on April 12 the early 2010s. In the new season, expect even more authenticity in crafting the world of “Game of Thrones.” From incredible castles to genuine costumes to topof-the-line visual effects, HBO stops at nothing to ensure that the series looks and feels as if it could be an actual retelling of the history of some unknown land. They bring Westeros to life with vivid imagination, capturing a world as diverse, beautiful and horrifying as our own.

The combination of mass appeal, bold storylines and a strong ensemble cast makes the show truly great. As it heads into its fifth season, “Game of Thrones” continues to amaze audiences and offer exceptional entertainment. The show returns April 12 at 7 p.m. on HBO.

YouTuber Grace Helbig takes over TV ‘Dovekeepers’ fails to fly high Madeline Zann Entertainment Editor

Adam Lujan Assistant Editor On April 3, internet superstar Grace Helbig made the leap to TV with the debut of “The Grace Helbig Show” on E!.

Known for her “It’s Grace” channel on YouTube and her steadily growing social media empire, Helbig brought her unique brand of awkward and adorable humor to the small screen. The weekly chat show started strong, demonstrating just the right amount of quirk and charm to benefit the Internet personality.

For those new to the world of #TeamInternet, Grace Helbig got her start online back in 2008 with “Daily Grace,” a vlog on My Damn Channel, a web-based comedy network. Over the next five years, her following grew to 3 million subscribers, easily making her one of the most successful Internet stars to date. In 2013, Helbig left My Damn Channel, which had owned the rights to all of her content, to pursue her own creative vision.

Helbig launched her channel, “It’s Grace,” the following year, quickly rebuilding her sizeable and faithful audience. Not long after, she released her New York Times best-selling “Grace’s Guide,” a tongue-incheek self-help book about the art of being an adult. “The Grace Helbig Show” marks her biggest endeavor so far—and it’s already off to a solid start.

The show opened with an amusing and apropos introduction from Helbig: “This isn’t your average television show because I’m not your average television show host—I’m just a little different. I’m like breakfast for dinner, or webbed toes, or an introvert who’s been making videos on the internet for years that someone decided should have a TV show.”

Unlike the typical late-night talk show format, “The Grace Helbig Show” forgoes a studio audience and even a conventional set. The show is based primarily in Helbig’s “house”—really, a set decorated with funky wallpaper, bright colors and farm-animal-

shaped furniture. Helbig speaks directly to the camera, like she would in her online videos and interacts with her guests in the house’s various rooms.

After a quick segment highlighting news items and trends in social media—á la “The Soup”—Helbig sits down with her first guest, comedian Aisha Tyler (“The Talk”). As much as an Internet personality’s day job leaves her mostly on her own talking to a camera, Helbig really shines in her interactions with her guests. With Tyler, Helbig managed to ask fun questions that have her rolling with laughter and the audience utterly charmed.

Later, Helbig’s best friend and fellow YouTube star Mamrie Hart (“You Deserve a Drink”) stops by to play an uproarious viralvideo-based drinking game. At the close of the show, DJ and online personality Flula Borg, Helbig’s final guest, helps her compose a quirk-tastic theme tune for her show.

The debut episode wasn’t perfect— Helbig’s discomfort and nerves were adorable but very obvious and the houseset felt a little too staged at times—but it was overall a very solid start. Going from online videos no longer than a few minutes to a half-hour talk show format could have easily gone wrong, but Helbig managed to translate her endearing personality and humor very well.

Surrounding herself with more fellow YouTube stars will ease Helbig’s transition to the small screen. Internet personalities have captured modern audiences because of their accessibility and authenticity— Helbig is a shining example of this. With “The Grace Helbig Show,” she has a rare opportunity to bring that to television, where being fake is considered “real” and being a good talk show host means having the biggest audience and salary. As she has always done, Helbig stayed true to herself and created something quite special; with the help of “The Grace Helbig Show,” her star will only continue to rise.

Moral shame at DU: Iran and moral bankruptcy Avrum Hirsh Parent

I’d like to first say that I do not mean to comment with meanness. I respect Mr. Hill and Rowe as people, but I passionately reject their values on this subject. The moral rot at our universities has us almost retching from coast to coast. What were once bastions of American values and goodness — lauding our great history, our liberty, our defense of good against evil, our constitution, small limited government and capitalism — now have become almost indoctrination centers of antiAmerican leftism and moral bankruptcy.

At almost every one of our universities, almost every part of the American value system and moral basis is under attack from our professors and administrators.

Here is a typical example: I heard on national radio that on February 18 there was a live webcast between the foreign minister of Iran, Javad Zarif, a former University of Denver student and moderator, University Dean Christopher Hill. Students, faculty and guests formed the audience. Administrators at the University called it a “momentous dialogue”; an event of “historic magnitude.” One of Zarif ’s former professors Edward Rowe lauded Zarir’s decade of service to Tehran telling him, “in the 25 years since you completed your degree we have watched with admiration, excitement, pleasure, and pride your extraordinary career in the Iranian diplomatic foreign service.”

Any citizen with a barely intact American value system and halfworking moral compass would have to restrain him or herself from upchucking at such a meeting and responses from leaders at the university. Before our universities were essentially taken over by people with these awful values, a man like Zarif would have been a pariah, his American university degree reviled, his work considered a cosmic level shame.

Instead, he is regaled and swooned over.

It’s this month at Denver, but any day will find such anti-American values dominant at almost any University.

A man spends 25 years supporting and representing a fascist, anti-American, oppressive, terrorist-supporting religious tyranny. A man who represents a regime that crushes freedom of speech, political dissent, religion, women’s and gay rights, is someone we are supposed to admire at DU. A man goes to work each day and serves as a mouthpiece for a dictatorship responsible for the death of thousands of American soldiers in places like Lebanon and Iraq.

A man spends his work life supporting and defending a vile thugocracy intent on bringing the sword of Islam to all infidels around the world, responsible for aligning itself with any and every antiAmerican entity in the world; intent on building a nuclear bomb arsenal; funding and supporting terrorist groups like Hezbollah; spreading its dark barbaric power into Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Lebanon and Venezuela — even trying to assassinate

Students should always make attempts to stay engaged in whatever form of communication their professors are using. Forgetting to check your email inbox is not an acceptable excuse to miss updates on tests when nearly every single professor on campus uses email as their primary mode of communication. However, any student who has received 15 emails from a single professor in one day understands how difficult it can be to keep track of class updates this way. Many professors need to improve their email methods to ensure that students can effectively understand exactly what each class update is.

While it is crucial that students keep track of emails from professors, emails from administration and on-campus organizations are often skipped or skimmed, and understandably so in most instances.

When we receive emails every single day about events or opportunities that oftentimes do not apply to us, it is difficult to stay engaged in every administrational email.

So, how do students receive the information they need? An article from Inside Higher Ed shows that students increasingly rely on social media for necessary information, whether through pages they follow on Twitter and Facebook, or groups that students can receive notifications with every update.

Most student organizations have groups or pages similar to these to distribute information, but most DU administration groups either do not have a page or only distribute marketing-related information.

To effectively communicate to students, DU should improve social media communications to current students. This could be done through posts sent throughout the week regarding issues that were already sent through an email. This way, students are reminded of events quickly and are more likely to read about it. If they want follow-up they can refer to the email.

This could also be a better way for professors to notify students of changes: through class groups, or pages, if they don’t want to add their students on Facebook.

Should DU send fewer student emails?

Skim through your inbox from last week and you might find emails on undergraduate student updates, departmental events, Chancellor invitations, DU Digest and internal news. Receiving these emails is a daily part of every student’s life, but do we actually pay attention to them? Too often, the answer is no. To effectively communicate, DU administration and organizations should improve distribution of information through smaller messages, fewer emails or new mediums of communication.

A McKinsey Global Institute report shows that the average worker spends 13 hours per week reading and responding to emails. However, according to a New York Times article, the average college student spends a mere six minutes on email. The divide is clear: while administration and faculty may be used to spending lengthy amounts of time using email in their workday, students do not spend enough time to

Additionally, DU could divide its campus-wide emails into smaller emails spread throughout the week. Instead of sending one very lengthy email with all campus updates every week, administration could send a weekly event email, opportunity email, and update email. This would be even more effective if more offices combined these emails. For instance, the Chancellor updates could be included in an update email, rather than getting sent individually. As students are used to reading a larger volume of small messages, like the common format on social media, it is more likely that students would read these notifications, as long as the volume isn’t increased to an absurd amount.

Communications between students, administration and professors may always be difficult, but there are steps that all parties can take to become more engaged with each other. Most importantly, DU administration should improve communication through mediums that students are more familiar with than email.

Should fraternities on campus be evaluated?

After a video of some of the University of Oklahoma’s Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) members chanting a racist rallying call on a bus went viral, the school’s chapter of SAE has come under a swift line of punishment. Two students identified from the video were expelled, and the chapter disbanded at the university altogether. The president of OU and the national SAE chairs have all publicly spoken against the actions of the students, and one student has come forward with an apology.

But with this incident, Greek Life around the United States has come under scrutiny. There are traditions that still propagate racist agenda in these groups, and this can be detrimental to those involved and those around them.

“Unfortunately I was not surprised at all,” says Theta Chi member Jeffrey Mariano when asked if the video was shocking to him. “Media tends to cover the worst aspects of any story and downplays the good. Greek life is under national scrutiny because of these incidents, yet they are praised because of their philanthropies and the amount of money they raise from them. It’s a double edged sword.”

In Colorado, fraternities and sororities have been held accountable for some behaviors

that seemed to demonstrate this. Situations at DU, such as a ‘cowboys and Indians’ themed party, caused controversy over the racial stereotypes portrayed by the majority white party-goers and fueled many students’ desire to change the DU mascot.

The Greek community is an old one, with most traditional fraternities in their 150-something year of existence. With a history so long, there are many traditions that carry on through time that, while in the past were acceptable, are taboo today.

Racism is a big topic in modern U.S. culture and, with minorities gaining a louder voice, certain customs in Greek life can come off as offensive.

The words chanted by the OU students draw you back to a precivil rights era mentality.

Though the chapter at OU has been disbanded and openly rebuked by the national organization, a recent report found that the students learned the lyrics to the song at a preeminent leadership event on a cruise ship, challenging the idea that the actions of the young members in the video are an isolated issue. The traditions that have continued and allowed for this incident should be taken seriously, and the organizations evaluated to ensure that these ideas do not propagate.

Given the national scrutiny of their fraternity, and of Greek life in general, SAE members are hesitant to make comments about the event and their

knowledge of any lyrics of the chant. Understandably, most chapters, including that of the DU, have renounced the actions of the OU members. But in light of this event and others like it, real questions have been raised about the social patterns that are propagated by these groups.

DU’s Greek Life is still a strong component of the school, and events like this could happen on our campus, either in public or behind closed doors. What’s important to do is make sure the students joining are not given the OK to act the way the OU students have.

The University of Oklahoma’s chapter of SAE was recently disbanded due to a viral video that had fraternity brothers chanting a racist rallying call. DU’s SAE chapter (pictured above) has renounced the actions of OU students and its Greek students continue to denounce intolerant traditions.

Guest speakers: worth your time?

When a famous person comes to a university, you will hear about it. The presidential debate that DU hosted in 2012 is still mentioned in prospective student tours and anybody interested in the Josef Korbel School of International Studies will likely hear about our famous alumna, Condoleezza Rice.

Famous speakers are a point of pride at universities, but, quite frankly, they don’t add to students’ academic experiences.

The most valuable speakers at universities are those who have a unique perspective, which happens to coincide with lesserknown people.

I first thought of the role of speakers on-campus while attending an event this week at

the Korbel school with General George Casey, former Army Chief of Staff. The discussion was interesting and allowed a small group of international studies students to ask questions from a security perspective.

However, the answers were also very predictable. Gen. Casey still plays an important role in the Army’s perspective of security and his answers reflected as much: sectarian violence in Iraq would have occurred whether or not the United States invaded and furthermore, Iraq was a purely strategic mission, without the influence of oil or Israel.

I underwent nearly the same experience last year at a talk by Brazilian Ambassador to the United States, Mauro Vieira.

Brazilian policy, as would be expected from a man whose job is to represent Brazilian policy.

It offered few new perspectives on the country.

Famous speakers and politicians typically have too many vested interests to bring meaningful discussion to students because meaningful discussion oftentimes means talking about potentially risky subjects or opening up to possibilities other than expected from your affiliation.

This pattern pervades across many speaking events. President Obama, Kerry Washington, Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia and Thomas Friedman were all valuable experiences for bragging rights, but their actual speeches and discussions were the least enriching to my academic experience.

The best discussion I ever attended was actually a panel on women’s justice in Iran. The panelists were merely friends of my Farsi professor at George Washington University, but their research was unique, specific and they were not too famous to prevent discussion of potentially controversial issues.

As a result, I learned a lot about Iran, women in Iran and the interaction between the two.

It was a subject I didn’t know a lot about, but incredibly applicable to my studies of International Affairs. It was also at a time when Iran was acclimating to a new president, so I learned a new perspective on the issue than what would be expected from American newspapers.

In short, famous speakers are more of a bragging right

to universities and students.

Universities should be active in recruiting speakers who have few vested interests and unique perspectives.

From what I’ve seen at DU, the various academic programs offer these types of speakers.

Just in the past week, I’ve seen flyers for events from a variety of speakers on a variety of issues, from development conferences to internal DU programs.

There are plenty of opportunities for students to gain new perspectives on their studies from people who spend their lives working with the issues. Students should also be active in seeking speaker events that offer unique perspectives and issues. Maybe the next speaker event will address what will become the focus of your future career.

Denver women’s lax falls to rival Stanford 14-7

13 Stanford Cardinal took Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium by storm on April 3 in Denver.

After a tough 15-7 loss to unranked Cornell on March 31, the Cardinal were ready to fight for victory against the Denver Pioneers, and won in convincing fashion, 14-7.

“We were really focused on making a statement for our conference games and setting the tone for how we want to play the rest of the conference season,” said Stanford head coach Amy Bokker.

Out of the gate, Stanford began their run and never looked back. Kelly Myers started off the scoring for the Cardinal after securing a free position shot past Denver goalie, Hannah Hook.

A few minutes later, Stanford would score again, this time coming from Denver native Lucy Dikeou after a doorstep feed from Mackenzie Tesei.

The first goal for the Pioneers would come from freshman Katherine Fischer after an unassisted drive to the cage.

Fischer would later receive two yellow cards, removing her from the field for the remainder of the game.

Simple mistakes made by Denver in the first ten minutes of play gave Stanford the chance to take control.

“I think losing two defenders within the first ten minutes of the game was definitely tough. With Ali [Proehl] going down within 30 seconds, I felt like that really deflated us,” said Denver coach Liza Kelly.

Fifteen seconds into the game, Denver’s star defender Ali Proehl suffered an apparent knee injury near Stanford’s crease, and would miss the rest of the game.

“We worked so hard to try and get the ball back from them, but we just needed to take some better shots in the first half,” Kelly added.

A six-goal run at the end of the first half followed by four consecutive goals to open the first half saw Stanford take a 14-2 lead just five minutes into the second half.

Things went from bad to worse for the Pioneers, as the Cardinal dominated in nearly all phases of the game, controlling the draw and rarely turning the ball over.

The stellar Cardinal defense was highlighted by freshman goalie Allie DaCar’s six first half saves. She also allowed only one free position goal in the first half, making two saves on Denver’s other two opportunities.

“I think defensively this was our best performance of the year because everyone knew that we were going to have each other’s backs,” DaCar said. “We have defensive goals that we try to meet every game and we haven’t exactly been meeting those goals but this game we all turned it on and trusted each other and played for each other.”

Stanford seemed to let off the gas pedal with a 14-2 lead halfway through the second half. Midfielder Rachael Dillon jumpstarted what looked to be a Denver rally when she performed a hat trick to cut the Stanford lead to 14-6.

Denver would score once more against Stanford’s second string. However, it

was too little too late for the Pioneers.

Revenge was taken by the Cardinal, as the Pioneers won both games last year—one during the regular season and the other during the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) conference tournament. The win for Stanford also snapped Denver’s 17-game MPSF regular season win streak. This was the second loss Denver has experienced on their home turf this season, after their 12-game Peter Barton winning streak— which dated back to last year—was snapped by Louisville in February.

“Coming in after some tough losses we really had to look at ourselves, and see what we were doing right and what we weren’t,” Dikeou said. “We really focused on teamwork, and you can see from the variety of people that scored goals that we definitely executed our game plan and focused on the team rather than any individual effort.”

A: For high school, I went to the Hill Academy, a private high school. It was a lacrosse school. We practiced every day and had school afterwards. We traveled the east coast playing the best high schools. I learned the field game that way.

Q: How did you come to DU? A: The coaches recruited me. I went to high school with Jeremy Noble, who also played for DU. He was in contact with me. He thought it was nice here and he loved the coaches. That was part of my decision to come to Denver, but I also loved the atmosphere.

Q: What has been your career highlight so far?

A: Making the Final Four my freshman year has definitely been the highlight.

One of my goals is to win the national championship, as well. Making the Final Four last year gives me motivation to make it further and keep working.

Q: What was your first season like?

A: I was practicing hard every day and I was in the starting midfield. It was hard work, but the hard work from high school paid off. Playing within the team and building that chemistry was huge. I was trying to play my best.

Q: What are your goals for the remainder of the season?

A: Obviously a national championship is the number one goal. I have little goals like working on my game and getting better. I’m not as strong as others.

Q: Is there a specific game coming up that you are most excited for?

A: I need to take it one game at a time.

With college lacrosse any team can beat anyone on any given day.

Q: What are your plans for after college?

A: I definitely see myself playing lacrosse as long as I can—going to the MLL (Major League Lacrosse) or the NLL (National Lacrosse League). I would like to get into coaching lacrosse, too.

2014-2015 Pioneer hockey season in review 16 Braiden Albrecht-Reed Senior Reporter Despite falling short of a Frozen Four, the 2014-15 season provided several building blocks for the future of the DU hockey program.

In head coach Jim Montgomery’s second season behind the bench, there were marked improvements. The team sported a 24-14-2 overall record and 14-10-1 conference record, which both compare favorably to last year’s results of 20-16-6 overall and 10-11-3 in conference. From the beginning of the year to the end, there was more consistency and commitment to the fast and up-tempo play style of the Pioneers.

Two freshmen, Danton Heinen (Langley, British Columbia) and Tanner Jaillet (Red Deer, Alberta), gave the squad a much needed spark this year. Heinen surprised the entire country when he totaled 45 points, a rare feat by a freshman forward. A Boston Bruins prospect, he will likely stay at school at least one more year and continue to improve before joining a professional team.

Goalie Jaillet stole the spotlight midway through the year from incumbent starter Evan Cowley (Evergreen, Colorado). Jaillet ended the season having played in 27 games compared to Cowley’s 20. Cowley actually owned better numbers across the board with a 2.16 GAA, .924 SV percent, and three shutouts. Jaillet posted numbers of 2.35 GAA, .917 SV percent, and one shutout. Despite the discrepancy, Jaillet showed the affinity

for the big moment and provided key stops for the Pioneers down the stretch.

Senior defenseman Joey LaLeggia (Burnaby, British Columbia) rounded out his career with a fantastic 15 goal, 40 point campaign. A powerplay whiz, he manned the point well for DU and chalked up 7 powerplay goals and 6 powerplay assists.

If he wasn’t rushing the puck through the neutral zone at even strength, he was providing crisp outlet passes that eased Denver’s transition game. A smaller offensive defenseman, LaLeggia still managed 56 penalty minutes, 39 blocked shots, and finished with a +14 rating.

Collectively, the team managed to sweep rival Colorado College and thus, won the Battle for the Gold Pan with ease. DU’s combined goal differential from the three games was +12, an incredibly impressive stat when it comes to this intense rivalry.

The Pioneers earned third place in the NCHC Tournament after sweeping the University of Minnesota Duluth, losing to the University of Miami- Ohio, and then defeating the University of North Dakota 5-1.

In the NCAA Tournament, DU bested Boston College by 3 goals, but lost to Providence after three scrappy periods.

With an NCAA Tournament win, individual standouts, and notable improvements to its record, the DU hockey team has a lot to be proud of from 2014-15. As head coach Montgomery continues to recruit his own players and install his gameplan, an upward trajectory looks probable for this historically great program.

Pioneer tennis season in full swing Carolyn Angiollo Staff Writer

The DU tennis season has been in full swing since September, as the season is split between fall and spring. Within the next couple of months, the season will come to a close for both the men and women’s teams.

The men’s team is currently ranked no. 40 in the nation.

In the fall, the men’s team made it to the quarterfinals of the Fall National Championship. Junior Henry Craig (Murrieta, California) and sophomore Alex Glasson (Alton, United Kingdom) competed for the team in the doubles category, but fell short to Vanderbilt University before making it to the Indoor Tennis Championship. Craig also competed in the singles event, but lost to Jason Tahir of Duke University in round 32.

In February, the team attended invitationals, including the Florida State University Invitational and the San Diego Invitational.

The outdoor season’s home opener was March 7, and the Pioneers were victorious over Marquette University, 7-0.

The overall record for the spring season is currently 12-7. Within the Summit League, DU’s record is 4-0 after defeating

Oral Roberts University (6-1), Western Illinois University (7-0), University of Nebraska Omaha (7-0) and South Dakota State University (7-0). This puts the Pioneers in first place as the postseason approaches.

The next home meet for the men is on April 17 against the University of New Mexico. The Summit League Championship Tournament will begin on April 23 in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

DU’s women’s team is also successfully moving through their season, ranking no.

67 in the country. They also competed at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Championship in the fall. Sophomore Sonja Radosevic (Miami, Florida) and freshman Gracia Mboko (Burlington, Ontario) advanced to the quarterfinals for doubles and Mboko advanced to the singles consolation round.

This spring, the women’s team is also currently sitting at the top of the Summit League Conference. Like the men, their record is currently 4-0 within conference with major wins against Omaha (7-0), Western Illinois (7-0), Fort Wayne (6-1) and South Dakota State (6-1). Overall, the women’s record is 10-8.

The next home meet for the lady Pios is scheduled for April 11 against Indiana

University-Purdue University Indiana. They will also travel to Fort Wayne, Indiana at the end of April to compete in the Summit League Championship Tournament.

The NCAA Tournament for both teams is scheduled to take place on May 15-25 in Waco, Texas.

It was the Wesley Berg show on a crisp spring night on April 3 at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. Berg (Coquitlam, B.C.) had more points than he had in the last three games combined—all coming in the first half of a 15-4 win over the University of Villanova Wildcats.

The senior scored in the first 33 seconds off of a feed from sophomore midfielder Tyler Pace (Coquitlam, B.C.). Berg scored the next four for the No. 5 Pioneers, one of which in particularly memorable fashion when his loose ball pick-up turned into a spinning shot at the open goal. For Berg, his breakout performance seems to go against the norm of offensive coordinator Matt Brown’s offense.

“We’re not gonna have players that put up the hundred point seasons, but we’re going to have seven or eight guys that are up there contributing with a lot of points,” Berg said.

Berg finished with 10 points on seven goals and three assists, breaking the school record for most points in the first half.

“I thought we had some lucky bounces ,but I think sometimes you create your own luck and I really thought the guys came to play tonight early,” Pioneer Head Coach Bill Tierney said. “As crazy as it sounds, I was more proud of the defense tonight than the offense.”

After tying the game at one apiece in the first quarter, victory never seemed to be in reach for the Wildcats. Fueled by Berg, the Pioneers scored 10 straight, and didn’t allow a Villanova goal until the 14:13 mark of the third quarter.

Denver dominated in ground balls (3111) in large part because of freshman Trevor Baptiste’s success at the faceoff x. Baptiste (Denville, N.J.) went 15-for-21 on the day.

“They did a really good job of beating us off the ground, riding us hard, causing turnovers, a lot of goals off of failed clears,” added head Villanova coach Michael Corrado.

Women’s golf prepares for tournament Braiden Albrecht-Reed Senior Reporter

DU’s women’s golf team is slated to enter the Summit League Tournament. The tournament spans from April 20 to the 22.

These three rounds will be played at the Bayonet Golf Course in Seaside, California.

The team will be led by head coach Lindsay Kuhle, who is only the second coach in school history, and assumed the position in February 2013. Only one senior, Rachael Watton (Edinburgh, Scotland), can be found on the seven person team.

(Sharon, Smidinger (Crofton, Maryland), while the freshmen are Jessica Dreesbeimdieke (Windhoek, Namibia) and Aleana Groenhout (Kirkland, Washington). Mariell Bruun (Larvik, Norway) and Jessica Carty (Holywood, Northern Ireland) are the sophomores on the team. Carty was named the Summit League’s female golfer of the week for April 1.

Over the course of the season, the golf team has played in eight tournaments and invitationals. The NCAA Championships 7 days will take place in Tampa, Florida this year, from May /nativerootssouth 22 to 24.
