Denver Police gather outside of DU’s Ritchie Center on the afternoon of May 7 in reponse to an anonymous report that a man carrying an assault rifle had entered the building.

Connor W. Davis Editor-in-Chief On May 7 at 3:11 p.m., Campus Safety received a report of “a suspicious person on the DU campus who may be threatening the DU community,” according to a DU ALERT sent to the DU Community at about 3:20 p.m. A more specific DU ALERT was then sent to the DU community at about 3:30 p.m. explaining that “The Depart-

ment of Campus Safety has received reports of a male wearing a black jacket entering the Ritchie Center carrying an assault rifle.” According to an email sent out by DU Media Relations, this call was believed to be made through a computerized system. Denver Police Department (DPD) and Campus Safety were on scene, by this time searching for the reported gunman. “We just have a report of a suspicious person, possibly

with a weapon,” said Campus Safety Officer Bradley Chaddick while outside of the Ritchie Center during the search. “We don’t have video confirmation yet, but we have the police going through right now and checking all the nooks and crannies. There is no solid confirmation that the man has a gun. We received an anonymous call and are just blocking people from going that way.” Media staging was quickly set up at about 4:10 p.m. Various news sources flooded the cam-

pus and began reporting from DU about the potential gunman. At 4:25 p.m., another DU ALERT was sent out explaining that, “Campus Safety has received a new report of a 30 year old white male wearing a red jacket carrying a handgun in the area of the Newman Center.” According to the email from DU Media Relations, this call was made by a member of the DU Community. Campus Safety and DPD rushed to the Newman Center to search there as

well for a potential gunman. Various media outlets soon began claiming both of these reports to be hoaxes. In response to these claims, DU’s internal news system sent out a message, saying, “Some media are reporting possible gunman on campus is a hoax. This is unconfirmed. Remain indoors and locked down. Denver Police are searching both the Ritchie Center and the Newman Center.” CONTINUED, PAGE 3
