10 reasons to fall in love with shopping local USA TODAY On Thanksgiving, have dinner with your family and watch football. On Friday, go for a hike. Then on Saturday — Small Business Saturday — head to Main Street or your local shopping area and spend your money in local, independent stores and cafés. Your neighbors will be there, too. In fact, a whopping 82% of U.S. consumers plan to shop or eat at an independently owned store or restaurant on Small Business Saturday, according to the American Express Small Business Saturday Consumer Insights Survey. Small Business Saturday, my favorite day of the year, is coming Nov. 28. In just five short years, it has become an American shopping tradition. Credit card company American Express kicked off Small Business Saturday in 2010 and has committed huge resources to make this a game-changing event for small, local companies.

10 reasons to love shopping local 1. It’s fun. My family used to shop on Black Friday (the day ater Thanksgiving). We’d get up early, head for sales, then meet for breakfast. No more. It’s just too painful: no real bargains, crazy crowds, unpleasant employees. Now, we’ve made Small Business Saturday our tradition. We sleep in, meet for breakfast at a local, independent café, then go shopping in small stores. Nice! 2. You support schools, police and fire departments. When you shop small, the bulk of the money you spend and most of your taxes stay local — helping schools, paving streets, keeping you safe. According to the research firm Civic Economics, for every $100 you spend: • In a local small business, $68 stays in your community. • At a local branch of a chain store, $43 remains. • Online, virtually no money stays local. 3. You get money back. If you’re an American Express cardholder, register your card in advance. Then shop in one of the many listed independent stores and restaurants on the American Express “Shop Small” map — and get up to three $10 statement credits. Register at www.ShopSmall.com. 4. You can find great books and meet your favorite authors. Support from the country’s most popular writers has helped make this the busiest day of the year

for many independent bookstores. Authors will be volunteering in bookstores signing books, giving recommendations, and even ringing up sales at the cash register. Check here to see which authors will be volunteering at your local bookstore: http://www.indiebound.org/indiesfirst. 5. You’ll raise your property values. Lively, vibrant neighborhood shopping streets are considered an advantage when selling a home. They make your property more valuable. 6. You’ll strengthen your community. Local businesses are owned by people who live in your town, go to your church or synagogue, donate to local animal shelters, coach Little League teams. When you spend money in their stores and cafes, you support your neighbors. Shoppers can find those sought-ater one-of-akind gits in locally owned boutiques and jewelry stores. 7. You’ll get amazing toys. Walk into a toy superstore, and you’ll find aisles of pink and blue plastic that’ll end up at Goodwill by spring. Instead, at an independent toy store, you’ll find toys that will spark kids’ imaginations, help them learn and be a lot of fun. Locate one at the American Specialty Retail Store Association website: http://www.astratoy.org/find-a-store.asp 8. You’ll create jobs. Local businesses create local jobs. Oten, these are jobs that pay better than those at chain stores. 9. You’ll find “where did you get that?” jewelry. OK, I admit it — some of the gits I buy on Small Business Saturday are for myself. I shop small git stores, boutiques and jewelry stores to find unique accessories. 10. You’ll get pampered. The best git is oten an experience — a spa day, golf lesson, cooking class. Check your local independent businesses for great services to give as gits.

• 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice • Dash ground cloves • 1 tablespoon brown sugar • Dash ground cinnamon

Directions: Mix all the powders together. Store in dry place. Use about 4-5 spoons in a mug, fill with boiling water, stir with a cinnamon stick.

SUGGESTED BEVERAGES AND A GUIDE TO HOW MUCH TO BUY AND POUR FOR YOUR HOLIDAY PARTIES: • Non-alcoholic beverages: Assume guests will drink two servings in the first hour and one for each additional hour of the party. If the weather is warm, expect guests to drink a bit more. • Wine: One 750 – milliliter bottle of wine provides five to six glasses, depending on your pour. During a party, plan one bottle for every two guests. • Beer: Estimate that guests will drink about 12 ounces (one bottle) every half hour to hour during the party. • Cocktails: Allow 1 -1/2 ounces of liquor for each drink. A 750 –milliliter bottle (Fifth) makes about 16 drinks. Figure about a quart of mixer for every three guests.

Eggnog Recipe: Ingredients • 4 cups milk • 5 whole cloves • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract • 2 1/2 cups light rum • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

• 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg • 1 1/2 cups sugar • 12 egg yolks • 4 cups light cream • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Directions : 1. Combine milk, cloves, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla, and cinnamon in a saucepan, and heat over lowest setting for 5 minutes. Slowly bring milk mixture to a boil. 2. In a large bowl, combine egg yolks and sugar. Whisk together until fluffy. Whisk hot milk mixture slowly into the eggs. Pour mixture into saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly for 3 minutes, or until thick. Do not allow mixture to boil. Strain to remove cloves, and let cool for about an hour. 3. Stir in rum, cream, 2 teaspoon vanilla, and nutmeg. Refrigerate overnight before serving.

Thanksgiving Blessing Accept, O Lord, our Thanks and praise for all that you have done for us. We thank you for the splendor of the whole creation, for the beauty of this world, for the wonder of life, and for the mystery of love. We Thank you for the blessing of family and friends, and for the loving care which surrounds us on every side. We Thank you for setting us at task which demands our best efforts, and for leading us to accomplishments which satisfy and delight us. We Thank you also for those disappointments and failures that lead us to acknowledge our dependence on you alone. Above all, we Thank you for your Son Jesus Christ; for the truth of his Word and the example of his life; for the steadfast obedience, by which he over came temptation; for his dying, through which he overcame death; and for his rising to life again, in which we are raised to the life of your kingdom. Grant us the gift of your Spirit, that we may know him and make him known; and through him, at all times and in all places, may give Thanks to you in all things, Amen. Save money on holiday shopping

USA TODAY

time. Unlike credit card purchases however, layaway payments are interest-free (though there may be fees, always read the fine print before signing up). Buying something on layaway will also ensure that it will still be around come the busy holiday shopping season. Just keep in mind that not every store offers layaway and policies vary from store to store. That said, if you’re looking for a way to make that new TV or video game system a little more affordable, layaway might be a good option for you.

4. Buy some things early Despite the massive amount of savings buzz Black Friday generates year ater year, there are some items that rarely (if ever) get marked down on the big day. Git cards, vacation packages, furniture, designer clothing and high-end electronics are all examples of products that typically don’t receive any special treatment during the holiday season. This means you could find some savings by purchasing these items ahead of time, whether when they are on sale, or by financing them through a credit card or the previously suggested layaway option. If you decide to use a credit card to finance your purchases, consider coming up with a plan to pay it off so you don’t have to deal with the dreaded holiday debt hangover, and wind up carrying that debt far into the next year. This calculator can help you come up with a plan to pay it off. Also, be careful about using too much of your available balance, as doing so can have a negative impact on your credit scores, especially if you’re maxed out. You can see how your debt is affecting your credit by getting your credit scores for free on Credit.com, and watching them update monthly. It might be hard to come to terms with, but the holiday shopping season has arrived. While the holidays are typically filled with friends, family, food and fun, it’s also one of the biggest spending periods of the year. However, there are some things you can do now to help alleviate the strain it might put on your budget. 1. Start making a list When it comes to holiday shopping, staying organized is key. Taking the time to sit down and write out a shopping list can help you avoid making costly, unnecessary purchases. You can even take non-git related purchases, like decorations or meals, into account. With this information you should be able to keep track of your holiday-related expenses, build yourself a budget, and keep yourself focused in a hectic shopping environment. Proper preparation now can wind up saving you tons later on. 2. Subscribe to newsletters If you already have a pretty good idea of where you’ll be doing your shopping, consider subscribing to those store’s mailing lists and social media channels. Retailers tend to provide their subscribers with special deals and early alerts on upcoming sales. And if that wasn’t enough, some brands will even reward you with a coupon (typically anywhere between 10%-15% off one purchase) for signing up or subscribing. All of this can provide you with some great opportunities to knock out some of your holiday shopping for less. 3. Sign up for layaway An oten overlooked tool, layaway allows consumers to spread out the cost of big-ticket items over the span of several months. When opting to place an item on layaway, you’ll be required to make some sort of down payment (the amount of which will vary from store to store) and then make smaller payments over

While the holidays might be a stressful time for shoppers, you can opt out of the madness by planning ahead and getting your shopping done sooner. Not only will you find yourself more relaxed, but you could greatly decrease the chances you take on debt this holiday season. Remember, the holidays are about spending time with your loved ones, not scouring the aisles for expensive gits.

How to survive Black Friday shopping

TJ Donegan, Reviewed.com

For American shoppers, there’s no day more hyped or more daunting than Black Friday. It may be your best chance to score a deal on that gadget you’ve wanted for months, but it’s also a nightmare of overaggressive shoppers, deceptive deals, and incredibly long lines.

Don’t just hop into line and cross your fingers for a great deal. Stores unveil Black Friday ads days or weeks in advance, so do the research, find the deal you want, and speak to a manager about the store’s Black Friday policies. Figure out if there are any restrictions, if the store layout will change, if you’ll be allowed to wait outside, and what time people typically line up. Plan for the weather, dress appropriately, and figure out a backup plan if your deal of choice falls through.

3. Check Out Where You Can Black Friday checkout lines can snake on forever, like the worst amusement park ride imaginable. Large stores o\en combat this with Luckily, the worst aspects of Black Friday are easily avoidable if you go in with the right mindset. Here smaller checkouts in specialty sections. Even if you aren’t buying a new car radio, you can sometimes skip the main line and pay for your new TV are some of our favorite tips for surviving consumerism’s high holiday. in the automotive department instead. 1. Know the Rules Vouchers are a hot commodity at many stores on Black Friday. Line up 4. Don’t Get Blinded by the Deal early if you want to make sure you’ll get one. Black Friday is chaotic at best, so knowing what you’re getting into is the best way to avoid frustration. Doorbusters, for example, come in extremely limited quantities, so stores o\en hand out vouchers to the first customers in line. Get there early, score one of these, and you can go home, get warm, and pick up your deal later that morning. 2. Plan Ahead Browse your favorite stores’ circulars so you know what to get before you get to the store.

Not all deals are good deals. Just because a TV is hundreds of dollars off the MSRP, that doesn’t mean it’s a good deal. Sometimes stores stock one-off products from no-name brands just to use for Black Friday doorbusters. That so-called “$2,000” TV selling for $500? It could be a $300 piece of junk. As always, you need to do your research and make sure you know what you’re buying before you’re forced to make an on-the-spot decision. 5. Friday Isn’t The End The deals don’t end (or even begin) on Friday anymore. Pre-Black Friday sales, daily deals, Cyber Monday—stores use the entire holiday season to offload stock. Black Friday doorbusters may be some of the best deals of the season, but a smart shopper can find a deal any day from Thanksgiving to Chrismas Eve.
