Patagonia October Workwear Gear Guide 2018

Page 1

For almost 50 years, Patagonia has made clothes that stand up to demanding use, so while our line of workwear has some new entries, what hasn’t changed is our approach: build products that are truly functional, build them with skill and care so they last and last, and back them up with our Ironclad Guarantee. Even though many of our garments are intended for big walls or the big empty, we’d long heard from customers who found that our clothes work just as well on everyday job sites. And the more time we spent talking to framers and farmers, the more we realized there was an opportunity to do more than re-cast our existing gear for the trades. Using fabrics that reduce waste and natural dyes that improve topsoil, we’ve created clothes that are stronger and more comfortable to wear to work than anything else out there. We didn’t get there overnight. Extensive testing is always key to our process, and there was no shortage of constructive feedback along the way. But we listened, and our workwear’s cut with a roomier fit for comfort and range of motion. Multiple fabric weights offer warmth for cooler weather and greater breathability for afternoons in the hot sun. Innovative blends provide excellent abrasion resistance, making our pants and jackets super durable. Behind it all is a belief we share with people who make trusted stuff the world over: To do good, you actually have to do something.

Perched on beams salvaged from standing dead Douglas fir and custom milled by the Handcrafted Log & Timber crew, Bodie Johansson equalizes the pegs on the rafters of a new building outside Ridgway, Colorado. Blake Gordon

Our Fabrics and Fit Workwear pants and bibs are built from two weights of blended hemp and an incredibly durable denim, and we cut them wider than most Patagonia styles to make sure the heavier material doesn’t limit freedom of movement. Pants fit true to waist size but are roomy through the legs. Our jackets (beginning with the Steel Forge Denim Jacket on page 20) are also cut bigger than standard for range of motion, and they leave ample space for layering. Men who have a leaner build or don’t wear bulky layers may want to order Workwear jackets one size smaller than usual.

Double Knee Pants Heavy-duty work pants that stand up to the toughest tasks; double-knee design accommodates knee pads If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right—which, in this case, meant matching the toughness of Iron Forge Hemp canvas with fine-tuned features, construction and fit. We started with a roomy cut that won’t bind or constrict when you’re on the move and added large double-knee patches and pockets that are big enough to stow key tools when a full tool belt isn’t needed. These pants are solid but don’t need breaking in and have a supple and easy-wearing feel.

To some, the unique curved-top seat pockets might look like we’ve got our pants on backward. But the design serves a dual practical purpose—derived from our trusty Stand Up Shorts®, it makes room for a hammer, ratchets or other essential tools, and it adds another layer of fabric for greater durability.

INTRODUCING

Steel Forge Denim

Made with Dyneema®, a lightweight fiber that’s 15 times stronger than steel

Materials:

New this season, our Steel Forge Denim blends 92% organic cotton with 8% Dyneema, a synthetic fiber that’s exceptionally strong but so light that it floats on water. Used in anchor cables, crane slings, and tow ropes, it lends a traditional workhorse fabric greater durability without becoming too stiff for everyday wear. For decades, we’ve been making our own blue jeans using only organic cotton and reducing the amount of water consumed, and CO2 emitted, in the production process. But it wasn’t until we started experimenting with Dyneema that we began to see denim as able to handle high-abrasion settings. We came by our bias honestly: As a company that’s long made clothes for rock climbers, we’ve seen jeans wrecked in one afternoon on rough stone. When we got Dyneema fabric on the cutting tables, however, our attitude changed. Our designers kept dulling their shears as they built the initial prototypes, and our usual cutter blades couldn’t cut the fabric at all—something that hadn’t happened with any other material that had come through our doors. We matched the strength of the fabric with equally burly stitching, and the resulting pants and jackets proved just as strong in the field as they had in the Forge, our R&D lab in Ventura, California.

Steel Forge Denim Jacket Unlined denim work coat with exceptional strength for the heaviest and most abrasive tasks in the shop or out on the floor The first line of our mission statement is “Build the best product.” And if we can accomplish that close to home, it’s all the better. Our Steel Forge Denim is made with Texas-grown organic cotton, and we had the fabric milled at the legendary Cone Denim White Oak plant in North Carolina—some of White Oak’s last, in fact, before it shut down. The final cutting and sewing is done at a small, family-run factory in California. Made in the USA with imported parts. Steel Forge Denim Pants Our Steel Forge Denim proves you don’t need to go overseas—or use toxic chemicals—to make a great pair of jeans. Whereas most jeans rely on refined petroleum derivatives to create synthetic dyes, we use a natural indigo produced by Stony Creek Colors in Tennessee. The indigo comes from farmers who once grew tobacco and helps them keep their land in production. The crop requires no chemical pest control, is irrigated by rainwater, restores the soil and provides food for honeybees in the fall when little wild forage is available. Made in the USA with imported parts.

Burly Man Jacket and Vest Fully featured with oversized pockets for versatility

Fleece is an efficient, all-weather insulator, but it has a major drawback on a worksite: it can pick up debris if worn without a shell. Solving that problem, our Burly Man and Tin Shed designs have pile fleece on the inside bonded to smooth, superdurable, moisture-resistant exteriors that slough off sawdust and snow flurries. The Burly Man Vest and Jacket also have a pocket for everything, including two big drop-in front pockets and a large zip-entry pouch on the lower back. A drop-tail hem provides additional protection.

Camila Macarena Vallejos tries to pick up a signal from a radio-collared giant anteater, or oso hormiguero gigante, from atop Picaso. Reintroduced anteaters are part of a rewilding project led by Tompkins Conservation within Esteros del Iberá, Argentina, the world’s second-largest freshwater wetlands and a haven to 300-plus bird species, black howler monkeys, and capybaras (those beefy aquatic rodents). Along with local, provincial, and national partners, Tompkins Conservation has been instrumental in the creation of the future Iberá National Park. Beth Wald

Returning jaguars to their former habitat is another element of Tompkins Conservation’s work in Iberá. The presence of apex predators is critical to any healthy ecosystem, but jaguars were extirpated from the region in the 20th century; now only 200 remain in all of Argentina. The births of two jaguar cubs this June—to a mom who’d lost a leg as a cub and a dad who’d been orphaned by a hunter—offered new hope for these cats. Nicolás Carro and Karina Sporring made sure they began life in a solid den. Check out the cubs: patagonia.com/ibera Beth Wald
