Advocacy in Action: Empowering Students to Lead Change
Students are the heartbeat of advocacy efforts for a stronger and healthier society. With their energy, creativity, and unique perspectives, they hold the power to spark meaningful change in their schools and communities. Here are practical ways students can take the lead:
1. Speak Up and Share Ideas
Students can use school platforms like assemblies, student councils, or class discussions to voice their opinions on issues that matter most. A confident, well-informed voice often inspires others to listen and act.
2. Organize and Collaborate
Strength in numbers is key. Students can create advocacy clubs or partner with peers and local organizations to amplify their message and make a bigger impact
3. Lead by Example
Change begins with action. By modeling positive behaviors, such as participating in clean-ups or promoting inclusivity, students show their commitment to the causes they care about.
4. Innovate for Awareness
Students are digital natives and can use social media, blogs, and videos to spread awareness and rally support for their initiatives. Creative content can bring attention to critical issues and mobilize communities.
5. Partner with Adults
Students working alongside teachers, parents, and local leaders can combine youthful passion with experience and resources to achieve shared goals. Collaboration strengthens advocacy efforts.
By stepping up as advocates, students not only shape their communities but also gain valuable skills in leadership, communication, and problemsolving. Together, their voices can pave the way to a brighter, healthier future.

Cleveland ISD Brings Fresh Ideas to Nutrition and Education with Hydroponic Garden Pilot
Cleveland ISD is taking an innovative approach to combining education, sustainability, and healthy eating through the pilot of a Hydroponic Flex Farm Garden. This program offers students a hands-on learning experience in science and nutrition while also providing fresh, locally grown produce for school meals.
The pilot garden, located indoors, features a soilless, vertical growing system capable of cultivating a wide variety of vegetables and herbs year-round. Recently, the district's Child Nutrition Department harvested 18.75 pounds of Green Star and Romaine lettuce, along with several basil plants. The fresh produce was served to Cleveland Middle School and Cleveland High School students, highlighting the immediate benefits of the program.
In addition to supplying healthy food, the hydroponic garden serves as a learning tool. Students gain practical knowledge in botany, agriculture, and environmental science, helping to make abstract concepts like sustainability and nutrition tangible and relevant.
By connecting students to the food they eat and teaching them about healthy choices, the program fosters curiosity and engagement while encouraging better lifelong habits. Cleveland ISD is proud to pilot this initiative as part of its commitment to enriching education and promoting student well-being. If successful, the district plans to expand the program to benefit more schools and students.
The success of the hydroponic garden is sparking conversations about expanding the program. Plans are in motion to involve more schools, partner with local organizations, and incorporate advanced technologies like vertical farming.
“This is more than a garden; it’s a movement,” says Child Nutrition Director, Lacy Willey. “We’re not just feeding our students; we’re empowering them to lead healthier, more sustainable lives.” Cleveland ISD’s hydroponic garden exemplifies how schools can innovate to support both education and nutrition. With every harvest, students are not only eating better but also sowing the seeds for a brighter, greener future.
