CLEAN SLATE Menswear Lookbook 2019

CLEAN SLATE We have wiped the slate clean. Every item of clothing in our Clean Slate collection is a wearable manifestation of years of learning – not just about our garments, but about who we are, collectively, as people of the Caribbean. We’ve resisted notions that we’re less than and we can’t. We’ve deconstructed our heritage, our patterns and these saltwater boundaries to figure out how we can move in this space we’re in a little differently. How to expand it and proceed with a greater sense of agency. We have grown but we are still us and we walk with our origins. In Clean Slate you’ll see echoes of classic Cloth pieces, re-considered to be handcrafted, fresh and new. Touch: quality linen in a pared-down palette of natural/undyed, white and black. See: fine craft and detailing. Just as you’ve been finding a voice to speak through your experiences, we have too. It’s an evolving and lifelong process. Dress up your spirit along the way. All of the pieces in Clean Slate are available to order. Contact us at shop@thecloth.com for more information.

ROBERT YOUNG Founder and Creative Director The Cloth

At one point, Robert Young wanted to join the priesthood – to be a man of the cloth – hence the name of the label he founded in Trinidad and Tobago in 1986. Over the past three decades, Young has built The Cloth into an iconic line; one that has become synonymous with a unique Caribbean aesthetic born out in a wide spectrum of bold garments and signature appliques. Having inherited a spirit of activism and concern with national identity from his parents who worked in trade and credit unions, Young is not so much a fashion designer as an artist who uses clothing to make statements about social and political issues. His clothing is conscientious yet daring – based in tradition but marked by a spirit of revolution, restoration and integration. Young has collaborated with Caribbean luminaries such as masman Peter Minshall, and has created custom garments for some of the region's most notable musicians. When he is not designing, he makes time for outreach programmes and leads several men's youth and artist support groups.
