Which type of high-visibility clothing do you need? You’ve determined that high-visibility clothing is needed to protect your staff from moving vehicles. But will a simple vest be enough, or do they need full sleeves or even trousers? What are the rules? Watch out!

What to choose

High-visibility clothing is needed where there’s a risk of an employee being struck by a moving vehicle and you have not been able to remove the risk by other means, such as barriers. Typical situations where it’s needed include warehousing, roadside working, construction, quarrying and car park management.

Tip 1. According to BS EN ISO 201471:2013, all workers operating close to moving vehicles at more than 37 mph (60kmh) should wear Class 3 high-visibility clothing. This means that you can’t simply issue a vest or tabard and assume that it’s good enough. These garments are Class 2 and are suited to lower risk situations, e.g. car park supervision.

The purpose of high-visibility clothing is to improve the detectability of the wearer. Those wearing it may be evident from 300 metres away, whereas normal human vision might only detect a pedestrian at 50 metres. The clothing works due to a combination of the fabric colour and the hoops or bands of reflective material which are sewn on to the garment. Classification The standard for high-visibility clothing used at work is BS EN ISO 20471:2013. This standard describes three classes of clothing. Class 1 is for the lowest risk conditions and covers very small items such as hivisibility harnesses. Class 2 items include waistcoats and T-shirts. Class 3 items are designed for the highest risk environments and have the greatest surface area of high-visibility fabric and reflectors. Note. To achieve Class 3, sleeves or trousers are needed. On these items the reflective materials are deliberately located at the ends of the arms/ legs as these are the parts which move the most, making it more likely that the fabric will catch the light from a headlight. Tip. When purchasing personal protective equipment check that it appears genuine, as fake items are on the market. Use a reputable supplier and look for a CE mark, BS EN ISO 20471:2013 and Class 2 or 3 (depending on your needs).

Tip 2. If your staff are at risk from traffic moving at more than 37mph, check that their clothing includes coverage of the torso and either sleeves or trousers. The torso cover and the sleeves or trousers must also be made of high-visibility fabric and include reflective bands. Tip 3. This is one area of health and safety where it makes sense to exceed the minimum standard. Most quarries, road constructors and roadside working companies specify high-visibility trousers as well as full sleeves. You may wish to adopt a similar level of caution if your staff are at high risk. Tip 4. The only colours approved under BS EN ISO 20471:2013 are yellow, orange and red. A proportion of the garment can also be in a contrast colour which is non-dayglo. Other dayglo colours such as pink are available but don’t conform to the British Standard, so it’s safer to avoid them. To summarise: When purchasing check that garments conform to BS EN ISO 20471:2013, that they are CE marked and come from a reputable supplier. If your staff work near traffic moving at 37mph or more, the high-visibility clothing should cover the torso, plus the arms or legs.

Top Tip: The best way to de-ice your windscreen is with a de-icing solution and a scraper. Using the method of hot water can crack your windscreen and cause black ice on the ground, while simply sitting with the fans on wastes fuel as well as your time.

Keep safe on the roads this winter Follow these safe winter driving tips and protect yourself when out on the road in bad weather. With the British weather as unpredictable as ever, we’ve put together a quick survival guide of the best and worst ways to deal with all kinds of weather.

avoid if at all possible.

Snow & Ice

If there’s no way to avoid driving through the floodwater, ensure you’re moving slowly and stay in first gear, keeping the engine speed high. This will avoid water getting into the exhaust.

Best thing you can do… drive in as high a gear as possible.

The worst thing you can do… try to rush through.

Accelerate slowly and change up gears as soon as you can. This will help your tyres grip the road and reduce the chance of skidding.

Fog

Worst thing you can do… be late.

This one sounds obvious, but a startling number of people admit to not knowing when they should use their fog lights, or how to switch them on in their current car. According to The Highway Code, fog lights should only be used when the visibility drops below 100m. If you’re not sure where the switch is, find out from your manufacturer.

Make sure you give yourself sufficient extra time to make sure your car is snow-free before setting out. Obviously, snow on the windscreen could hinder your vision, but snow on your roof could also be dangerous if it slides off on to your windscreen or on to that of another road user. Heavy rain The best thing you can do… slow down. We’re so used to seeing rain in Britain that is doesn’t register in our minds as dangerous weather, but it is. The best thing you can do in rain is slow down and take it easy. It may take a little longer to get where you need to be, but it will keep drivers safe and the traffic flowing. The worst thing you can do… drive too close to the car in front. The required stopping distance doubles when the road surface is wet so make sure you’re consciously hanging back and leaving enough space between you and the car ahead. Flooding The best thing you can do… research.

Best thing you can do… use your fog lights.

Worst thing you can do… mistake your fog lights for your full beam headlights. Full beam lights can be hazardous when used incorrectly, especially when foggy. They light up the fog causing the reflection to blind both the driver and other road users. Find out where both are before you need to use them. High winds Best thing you can do… take a sheltered route. Avoid motorways where possible and always choose routes that are sheltered to reduce the effect of gusts. Worst thing you can do… drive too fast, or too slow. Overtaking can cause issues when winds are high because it can throw you or other drivers off balance. Drive sensibly at a speed that’s comfortable and in line with everyone else.

AMC© Training Workshops (9-12 people)  4 x 3.5 hour workshops run over 4 consecutive weeks  Guided learning (post workshop), exercises, workbook and support  Option of bolt on additional synergistic training workshops, where required Why is this important? Each of us has around 70,000 thoughts every day and often these same old thoughts recur, creating a negative (or positive) loop at a subconscious level. When you learn to understand and control your thinking, you can achieve breakthroughs, make better decisions and begin to produce your desired results. “No problem can be solved by the same level of consciousness that created it.” - Albert Einstein AMC© training workshops are open to individuals and businesses who are committed to self-development, upskilling and growth. The selection of delegates will be at the discretion of Graham Stuart, who will complete a Training Needs Analysis form (TNA) prior to the training funding being allocated and training places confirmed. Were & When (Bolton, Greater Manchester) The training location is: Compliance House, Horwich, Bolton, Greater Manchester (easy access, just off J6, M61) The 4 week training workshops include Friday mornings on January 13th ► 20th ► 27th – and February 3rd. What is Involved: The knowledge and skills you will gain builds up in layers over each of the four training workshops. Therefore, it is important that you are 100% commitment to attend all 4 x 3.5 hour sessions, over the four consecutive weeks = 14 hours of face to face training. Places will be strictly limited to 9-12 people per 4 week training programme. What is the Cost? The AMC© training has a high commercial value (per person) However, selected attendees will be facilitated through our strategic partner and the training will be 100% fully funded through the European Social Fund – providing you attend all 4 training session dates allocated to you. Missing any session/s will incur a “no show” fee of £200.00 to cover the cost room hire, training, loss of funding and other expenses. What to do Next To find out more, check availability and arrange to complete your Training Needs Analysis form for funding, please contact Graham Stuart directly on: 07870 222771
