General Blade Information We show you the value of speed and spin to indicate the nature of the blade or rubber. The control factor is only a guide; relative to each player’s feel. Usually one of the first questions a player will ask is, “How much control does this rubber or blade have?” A good question! Because, who wants to hit a ball uncontrolled? But, this question cannot be answered objectively. Control cannot be measured. It is an expression of the individual ball feeling of each player. A rubber that gives you optimum control can be uncontrollable for your doubles partner… why? Each player has different ball feeling since everybody has different sense of touch. The more sensors a hand’s skin has, the more sensitive it is and the better it feels the ball when it is hit. This capability to feel the ball increases naturally the more you practice. A professional player who practices 30 hours a week has quite a different ball feeling than a hobby player who trains one hour a week. Every player has different technique. One makes much use of his wrist to hit a ball (the so-called man with the “golden hand”), the other plays almost without any wrist movement. One plays topspin with a short arm swing, the other a long swing, etc., etc. Everyone holds his racket in a different way. This is not about shakehand or penhold grip but about the different way you can hold the bat. Both grips have numerous varieties which influence the feeling of the ball and have advantages and disadvantages depending on the strokes you play. Each player defines control differently. For one, control means ball placement in a short chop stroke; for the other a safe topspin stroke means a correct return of a service.

WEIGHT: The weight of blades ranges between 60g and 100g with 85g being the most popular. GRIP: The style of handle is an individual choice, It is advisable to try out the different styles. There are several important aspects to consider when choosing the handle - e.g. the length width and size of the handle needs to be matched to the size of the hand. A good grip should be adopted at the outset this will assist in developing a sound playing technique You can choose from the following shapes BLADE: The blade must be at least 85% wood. The rest of the material could be carbon, glass fibre, kevlar etc but the thickness of these man made materials should not normally exceed 0.35mm. BALSA: Particularly lightweight soft wood, used on the inner structure of the blade, with a hard outer surface making a fast lightweight blade. KEVLAR: Man made material is high in durability, low in weight and strengthens the blade. As with other man made fibres it enlarges the sweet spot increasing control. GLASSFIBRE: High quality man-made material, giving a similar performance to carbon fibre, enlarging the sweet spot, producing good control. CARBON: Carbon fibre man-made material strengthens the blade with a layer of carbon, usually between the top and second layers of ply on either side of the blade, enlarging the ‘sweet spot’ and increasing ball control.

CONTROL: cannot be measured but to help you to make a decision, we recommend you to remember: The higher speed and spin values are, the more difficult it is for you to control the ball in placement, adjustment of speed and spin, and the flying height of returns. Your ability to control fast and spinny rubbers will increase, of course, in proportion to the quantity of your training and matches.

Guo Yue’s tenth title at the Worlds! The STIGA-contracted Chinese won the doubles finals at the World Championships in Paris teaming Li Xiaoxia. They beat Ding Ning and Liu Shiwen, also China, in the finals 4-1 to capture their third World Champion title in a row. Guo Yue and Li Xiaoxia were quite superior to their opponents in Paris. Three set they dropped on their way to their third title. The hardest battle was in the semi finals against Feng Tianwei and Yu Mengyu from Singapore, where the Chinese champions won 4-2.

In the Finals the first game looked a little tensioned from Guo Yue and Li Xiaoxia, who lost it 5-11. Then they showed their Chinese comrades no mercy: 11-5, 11-7, 11-5, 11-7. “We played good and know each other extremely well”, Guo Yue explained the victory afterwards. “We have been playing together for ten years now, and we also come from the same town in China, Anshan in Liaoning province. This fact gives us confidence in the game.” But one more thing could have been decisive for winning the third title. “We stayed up late, ‘til one o clock, last night. So late? “Yes we were watching videos. We analyzed our game and the game of Liu Shiwen and Ding Ning. This was important for our performance. We felt we had done everything we could do in our preparation.”

This was the tenth time Guo Yue became World Champion. Ten titles is one of the highest scores in the Worlds table tennis history. Besides the three doubles titles with Li Xiaoxia, Guo Yue also has won the Worlds team title four times (2004, 2006, 2008 and 2012) the mixed title twice (2005, 2007), and in 2007 Guo Yue also won the biggest title, the Singles title.

General Rubber Information Remember control is relative to a player’s feel. This can be improved with practice and experience of match play. It is difficult to measure control as individual factors can change respective estimates. Control is dependent of speed of blade and rubber. Also hardness and thickness of sponge. Generally the thicker the sponge the lower the degree of ball control. Advice service: if you would like to discuss the effect and performance of any specific blade or rubber you can rely on our judgement and advice. You can also be confident that whatever we recommend represents the best. We are only at the other end of the telephone.

This type of rubber needs a great deal of training time if you wish to be successful and obtain maximum effect. Long pimples are ideal for combination bat players who will have a grippy pimple-in rubber on one side of the bat and long pimple-out on the other – introducing a guessing game for the opponent.

Rubber care: Inverted rubber needs regular cleaning and protection from light, particularly UV light, also humidity and extreme temperatures.

1.5 - 1.7mm for actively all-round players (ALL/ALL+)

Deterioration: Rubbers need to be replaced before grippiness and elasticity are lost through deterioration, resulting in the loss of speed and in particular, spin. To be effective in training and competition it is important that the rubber is always in pristine condition.

1.9 - 2.1mm - max for offensive players with all variations of speed and spin (OFF-, OFF, OFF+)

Rubber cleaner: It is advisable to use waterbased or alcohol based sprays to remove dirt and grime. This will prolong the life span of the rubber. Dirt particles have an effect on the ball contact and amount of grip on the playing surface of the rubber.

Anti spin: Pimple in rubber. The playing surface has very little grip and is very slow with little or no elasticity in the sponge - e.g. Toni Hold (Austria) this is used as a combination rubber with a disruptive effect when playing away from the table and is less effective when blocking or counter hitting. The classic anti spin characteristics are little or no sponge, elasticity, energy absorbent sponge producing minimum amount of spin. However such as Stiga Energy Absorber have faster sponges causing problems to opponents Medium pimple: Pimples 1 .2mm - 1 .6mm long. Less of a threat and not so training intensive as long pimples. The disruptive effect is relatively small. Gives good control with a low trajectory return, but with minimum spin. Long pimples: These are suitable for defensive and allround players. The long pimples are between 1.6mm and 1.8mm. in length and can be with or without sponge. The thin flexible pimples are the most effective, but are inclined to break off if they are not played face on! The pimples will give unpredictable playing qualities. These will be dependent to a great extent upon the amount of spin and speed on the

Pimples out: Short pimples approx 1.0mm long give a very direct ball rebound with a short ball contact time producing a minimal amount of spin. This is an ideal rubber for players who block and counter hit. It is also good for controlling the opponent’s spin. This rubber is frequently used on the backhand side of the bat. Pimples no sponge: Short (approx. 1.0mm long) pimple out – without sponge. The playing characteristics are a passive rubber – with very good ball control but low speed and spin possible making it difficult to give variation in stroke play.

Pimples in: Is the most versatile rubber giving the largest variation in speed and spin - from the high grippy and speed reduction of the defensive rubber to the high elasticity, spin dynamic offensive rubber covering the whole spectrum in modern table tennis. The characteristics for the pimples in rubber are achieved through various rubber mixtures -e.g. different Indian rubber types and processing – i.e. varying temperatures, supplementary materials etc, making pimples in rubber the most effective available. Thickness: The types and thickness of sponge are specifically designed for different types of games and their selection is an important factor. The sponge thickness ranges from 0.5mm to 2.5mm. Speed and spin increases with the thickness of the sponge, but the control decreases. Sponge thicknesses of 1.9mm - 2.5mm require increased training to maintain good control. Soft sponge enhances control and helps increase spin. Speed glue: The effect of speed glue is to increase both spin and speed without losing too much control. When using glue it is important to use a blade sealant (varnish) to protect it from splintering and prevent the glue seeping into the blade. The glue is applied to both blade and sponge before play, with at least two coats on the sponge, more coats can be applied, but this is an individual choice. The more coats applied, the higher the performance. The effect of the glue is to expand the sponge increasing its elasticity but reducing control.
