How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These need to be filled in with numbers that complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

OAKWELL’S SPOTLIGHT FIFTY YEARS AGO

Way back in 1957 clubs were riding high, probably at the height of their popularity. Looking in my treasured club diary, it seems I saw 59 different artistes in the firs three months of that year in an assortment of clubs, and not including the couple of big Command Shows I mentioned in an earlier article. There was a cracker of a show at Kellingley, with the well-known Sheffield magic act Lester Sharp & Iris,, popular soprano Carole Sears, Roy Stevens, “the whispering pianist”, and superb vocalist Mike Preston, who hailed from Australia. Don’t confuse this club with the one at Kettlethorpe, where headlining were Alec Winstone & the Flintstones (guess how they dressed for the stage), dance perfection with Bill & Helen Manton and comedian Leslie Adams. (At another club I recall Leslie Adams spotting an artiste in the audience with a tape recorder taping his act. He came off stage and chased the chap out of the club and down the road.)

Greasborough Social Club fielded some great artistes. There was Sheffield comic Benny Britten (what happened to him?), and the magic and fire-eating act Stromboli & Sylvia. I have seen this man send a sheet of flame about 30 feet long out over the heads of the audience, but this time he didn’t. I saw Les Booth’s favourite singer, Susan Lane, and the Dutch hypnotist Johan Vroegrijk. One of my favourite anecdotes is a recollection of sitting in the entrance to the club chatting to Les Boot when. In storms Peter Casson, who addresses Les. “What do you mean, booking this Dutchman, is he as good as me?” “He’s every bit as good as thee”, Les replied, ”And only half the money.” There was Kenny Cantor, brought up in the touring revues his father Terry (Toby Jug) Cantor ran round the theatres. He’s still around today, with his red framed over-sized glasses, running a stage school.

Also at this club was a cracker of a show, with Tony & Pauline Dru, duettists superb, comedian Jimmy Marshall, Sid Plummer with his trick xylophone (the only artiste who ever took the trouble to write and thank me for his review) and Bob Miller and the Millermen, who were an absolute sensation.

My own club was the Scala near Doncaster, and it wasn’t far behind, with The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, plus Veronica Dean, my favourite accordionist, and Syd & Eddie, who I’m sure were funnier then than when they were better known later as Little & Large. there was also Harry Bailey, an excellent and under- rated Irish comedian who began his career in the circus. And I have happy memories of the Ritz in Brighouse and the Liverpool laddie Jack Rigby, another often overlooked guy who was a most entertaining sand dancer among his other talents Those indeed were the days ! www.theclubmansguide.co.uk
