Clubs will contact me (mainly on recommendation from other clubs) to discuss various different ideas they may have regarding the future of their club. As you know, recent years has seen a massive increase in the number of club having to close their doors and more often than not its because they left it too late to ask for advice. The smoking ban in particular brought about a rapid decline in trade together with massive overheads and brewery loans. I have been to clubs where they are even struggling to form a committee when once upon a time it was a privilege to be a committee member.

My work involves assisting clubs who are financially challenged and clubs who are thriving. There are so many areas I can help and I have a proven track record with impeccable testimonials from lots of clubs I have assisted in the past.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These need to be filled in with numbers that complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

OAKWELL’S SPOTLIGHT WHO’S THIS ?

Rooting among the archives in Oakwell Towers looking for something quite different I came across this item I’d written, dated May 1985, after a visit to the club in Kimberworth Park. Can you guess the artiste it refers to, still very much around today ? Answer at the bottom of the page.

“This vocalist, from Cardiff, on his first visit to this area, is a real find. He’s a powerful baritone with a wide vocal range and a line in falsetto singing. Nothing very special about his programme, but it is all so well done, and his “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and “Love on the Rocks” were little masterpieces. Immaculate in his attire, he shows up as more than just a vocalist – a personality in his own right, adding neat touches if humour here and there. It’s impossible to imagine him failing to get a good response from even the hardest audience. A very worthwhile entertainer, and I hope we shall hear a lot more of him before very long.”

THIRTY YEARS AGO 1987 was a kind of in-between year. The Golden Years were gone and it was possible to spot the dark clouds approaching clubland. Nevertheless some big shows helped to keep spirits up, like the Blackpool Command Preview at Kexborough Social Club with Alan Jones, Dick Van Winkle, Heather Nixon, Barry Cheese, Robert Craig, Robin Good and Tammy Tevaro & Session. Ardsley W.M.C. were celebrating (I forget what) and had Stagg & Lee, Michael France and Paul Shane with his daughter Janice. The Victoria Club in Swinton, not usually one to put on big shows, had 5 acts, headed by Martin Brand. Rotherham’s East Dene put on 7 acts – Johnny Graham, Donna, Jenny Renn, Casablanca, the Darrell Sisters, Damion and Barry Santana. The following month there was a show of similar calibre at the Titanic in Rawmarsh, which was something to do with that master Concert Chairman Dickie Briggs (I’m not sure exactly what). This show had Barry Anthony & Ray Young, Tony Andrews, the Darrell Sisters, Jimmy King, Danny James and Dean Andrews. In addition Wayne Darley had a Talent Competition on the go. It’s interesting to note how many of those acts mentioned are still around and working today, plus the evergreen Melody Lane and the highly talented Jimmy Echo, all well established by the ‘80s.

People have been asking me about Barry Santana. I know he was involved in a serious road accident several years ago. He cancelled all his bookings and said he would not work on stage again until he was fit enough to do his act properly. Very entertaining, this was quite energetic and featured some strenuous drumming. I do not know the state of his health, but I have seen his name as compering one or two big shows. So I would like to think that things are moving in the right direction for this very nice guy and splendid performer.

1987 saw Sean Glenn putting on an Old Time Music Hall at the much missed Keresforth Hall, with Caroline Fields, Barry Cheese, Karl Steven Sm,ith, Dennis Dee, Mike Parking and heRos Wicks Dancers.

One thing I did try to do at this time was to get around some of the smaller clubs, which didn’t get a lot of publicity, and I won’t go into details, but I can tell you that my favourite was Middlecliffe W.M.C. not far from Darfield, a warm and welcoming place if ever there was one.
