How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These need to be filled in with numbers that complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

OAKWELL’S SPOTLIGHT One of the first things I look at when I get my new copy of The Guide is the page sent in by Mr Loska Checha.

It brings back memories of places long gone and artistes I saw and perhaps knew personally. 51 years ago, eh – that’s when I first began writing this column !. There was Ken Kaye on he organ of the R.A.O.B. Club in Moorends. I recall him at “The Cabbage”, the Adwick Allotment Holders Club, and later at Wickersley Social club. Ken was a lovely man and a first class musician and I always enjoyed a chat with him.. It was so sad when he went into hospital for an operation where he died unexpectedly..

On the same page the name Johnny Duffy jumped out at me. Johnny was a clubland star, very popular in Blackpool, Yorkshire and I daresay other areas.

I’ve written enough about Ronnie Dukes and Ricky Lee, and Roland Roy & Jackie Toaduff, but Johnny Duffy was a club filler too. What happened to him? I suspect he went abroad, to somewhere like Benidorm or Tenerife, but I just don’t know. There were others too, like Keith Hollome, Diane Cousins, David Alexander and Tony Addams, all very popular. And what about Peter Black, Phil Kelly, David H. Lee, Heather Nixon and Pat Leslie of the Greycats and Matchbox ? The leather-lunged Renato was a very big name for a time, where did he go ? Perhaps some of the young ladies, like sweet Sue Fisher may have chosen domesticity over a career. Some were forced to give up through ill health like Greg Mckenzie, Mike Kelly, Dave Baron and possibly Harry Parker, while others, specially in the earlier days, like Ernest Johns, Steve Jackson, Johnnie Peller, “Slim” Farrell and John StVan established themselves as agents.

A very few have made it on to the television. The late Lynne Perrie was a real star on clubland stages, and I reckon it would have taken more sheer guts and talent to entertain so well on a Yorkshire club stage than to act in a “soap”.

Janie MacDonald was blessed with an excellent singing voice and all the expertise she had gained working in clubs when Lady Luck came her way and she rose to the occasion splendidly. She comes over as the very nice person she really is. And those Patton Brothers, the first act I ever saw on a club stage, plus their crackpot brothers The Chuckle Brothers have done much to enliven the lives of children and parents alike on T.V. and theatre stages.

There are those straighttforward folk who announced they were going o retire – and did, like Tony Whyte, After their long spell on the liners Roland & Jackie retreated to Dronfield. (The only time they’ve been on the telly is when they showed visitors round their garden) Bobby Dennis sometimes joins them when he’s not in his home in Australia. And I have heard of Colin (Fingers)Henry doing one or two bits for a mate.

But there are those who made their names in the sixties and seventies, very good artistes, and still battle on, as good as ever. Think Jimmy Echo ,Damion. Alf Berry, Mark Stanley, Vincent, Dave Betton, and now and then The Turnstyles. God Luck to all of them, I say. www.theclubmansguide.co.uk
