How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These need to be filled in with numbers that complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

OAKWELL’S SPOTLIGHT FIFTY YEARS AGO

Sometimes It’s hard to believe myself, but I have been writing this column for over 50 years. There seems to be quite a bit of celebrating of anniversaries just now – so what was our clubland like 50 years ago. I can tell you it was riding high, 1967 was probably at the very peak of its popularity. New clubs were still opening, even a big one like the one in Kirk Sandal, and many of the breweries were being open handed with their loans. It was all very busy; in some places you wouldn’t get a seat if you weren’t there by 7.30, and the whole scene seemed awash with money. Where did it all go, I wonder? Here in South Yorks we had the big hitters, Greasborogh Social and The Scala, running 7 nights weekly bills with big names topping. They depended for support on the car trade and had to have a full club just about every night, but there was no breathalyser and seat belts were almost unknown. From my home near Doncaster I could reach 64 different clubs of various sizes quite easily, and many of them were running shows several nights every week. It was terrific fun while it lasted, but of course it couldn’t.

There were one or two of the big charity shows which were popular at the time during 1967.

My colleague, the well-known character Bill O’Neill, put on a real marathon at the Farmers Club in Kinsley, with eleven first class acts and three, yes three comedians as comperes. Not to be outdone Peter Bellamy had another blockbuster later in the year at the Five Acres. Some artistes, like Tony Whyte, were already established, while newcomers, a young Dave Betton for instance, were getting themselves known. A young group from Grantham – Dawn & The D.J.s were very, very good and proved highly popular. Comics of all sorts abounded, specially the Liverpool boys, and I saw Bobby Knutt at the Westminster Club very early in his solo career. And who could ever forget Alec Winston & the Flintstones? Hard to believe, but true, the Dagenham Girl Pipers topped one bill at the Scala, while over at Greasborough Bob Miller & the Millermen presented the finest band show I’ve ever seen or be likely to see. For personality and songs at the piano Chester Harriott was the absolute tops. Another black performer was Astor, who often set up his “camp” in the middle of a concert room. Tony Christie was still working with the Trackers, as yet “undiscovered”. Let’s not forget the ladies either.Lynne Perrie was at the top of her game, there were the delightful O’Connor Sisters, the queen of the squeezebox Veronica Dean, and the powerful sounds of Pat Leslie & the Greycats (later Matchbox). For sheer skill as an entertainer the tousle-headed Harry Parker was unbeatable at that time. And you will notice I haven’t even mentioned Ronnie Dukes & Ricky Lee, who ended up at the Royal Command Variety Performance, or Roland & Jackie Toaduff, (ten years on the QE 2) both very active in our clubs then. I’m sure there are many clubgoers who savour memories of this wonderful period – 50 years on.

The format is usually the same. On trundles our hero, smug in the knowledge he has some stunts to pull, with a few weedy jokes. Is this the new humour, embarrassing unsuspecting folk in some way ? Like luring them on to the stage and suddenly revealing they have to sing to thousands of people. And the ultimate in bad taste, breaking into someone’s bedroom with a film crew in the middle of the night on the pretext of conducting a silly quiz.
