How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These need to be filled in with numbers that complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

OAKWELL’S SPOTLIGHT

It is with great sadness that we have to announce that our very own Roger Holmes (Oakwell's Spotlight), passed away in the morning of Thursday the 10th January 2019, in hospital at the age of 90. One of the last great Clubmen, he thoroughly enjoyed writing the Oakwell column in the Clubmans Guide, which he had done for the last 52 years under its various ownerships and incarnations. He was a real mine of information, stretching back to the last days of the variety theatres and the 1960's booming club scene right up to recent times, and he loved to recall anecdotes of acts he’d seen, people he’d met and venues he'd visited. He had even started to dictate a book, but sadly this was not to be. Here at The Clubmans Guide we always enjoyed reading his unique write-ups and reviews of all of clublands variety, old and new. Our thoughts and hearts go out to his family, he will be sadly missed. R.I.P. www.theclubmansguide.co.uk
