Foster the People ‘Supermodel’
Markus Zusak ‘The Book Thief ’
It’s hard to believe, but it’s been three whole years since Foster the People ricocheted up the charts and into our hearts with their ubiquitous track, Pumped up Kicks. The band’s eagerly anticipated follow-up album, Supermodel, was released in early March after the launch of the aptly named preview track Coming of Age. The new album’s not an exact replica of the runaway hit that was their first effort but Supermodel again showcases the indie trio’s trademark dreamy melodic lyrics paired with some snappy guitar work and trademark synth grooves.
While not a new book, this celebrated novel became an instant classic on its release in 2005, and has recently been given the Hollywood treatment in a film of the same name. In order to give the film greater justice, we revisited the book to get a sense of Markus Zusak’s profound writing mastery.

Set in Germany in the years 1939 – 1943, The Book Thief is narrated by ‘Death’ and tells the story of a young girl named Liesel and her relationship with her foster parents and a young Jewish man who hides in their home during World War II. ‘Death’ watches over her when she steals her first book, and despite being illiterate, her love affair with books begins under the careful tutelage of Hans, her foster father. As the hardship of living in wartime progresses, Liesel finds solace in books - books that are of course forbidden in Nazi Germany. Zusak is quite literally, a poet. Words are skillfully weaved into a vivid visual landscape; a proliferation of adjectives and adverbs that in anyone else’s hands would just end up a wordy, nonsensical mess. Reading this first will only add depth to your experience in the cinema. DYMOCKS $19.99
The Monuments Men Hollywood’s favourite leading man has done it again, directing, co-writing and assembling an all-star cast to retell the story of the greatest treasure hunt in history. Based on Robert M Edsel’s book, The Monuments Men tells the true story of the rescue of the world’s great art masterpieces from Nazi thieves by a rag-tag band of over-the-hill art historians and museum curators during WWII. Clooney himself plays Frank Stokes, who, with his men, go behind enemy lines just as the Third Reich is crumbling to save artworks otherwise consigned to the history books. Critics are divided on how well the drama plays out: the seriousness of the subject matter juxtaposed against some light-touch comedic scripting makes this film a mash-up of art-house, drama and comedy. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t, leaving the viewer wondering if this was not quite the masterpiece it could have been. Still, it’s a fascinating story that deserves to be heard, and worth seeing for the stellar casting alone and classic heist storyline. GREATER UNION CINEMAS MORLEY. PRICE VARIES
