CRITICAL ALIGNMENT MODEL ONE: ENVIRONMENT 1

META DYNAMICS™ CRITICAL ALIGNMENT MODEL FOR COACHING One of the challenges of coaching is to know what a great outcome is. Whilst it’s up to the client, there is still the opportunity to add value to their decision, commitment or action by pointing out an obvious but unseen flaw in their thinking, or by bringing to their attention something they hadn’t considered. The Meta Dynamics™ Critical Alignment Model (CAM) is designed as a guide for a coach, facilitator, trainer, mentor, leader or consultant to have so they can ‘see’ with ease what to consider when working with a client. The Four Dimensions of the Critical Alignment Model There are, in any situation, 4 dimensions to consider. How well we know these dimensions, and their subtleties, determines how behaviourally flexible we can be when coaching. The Critical Alignment Model allows us to explore our world, our client’s world and the possibilities with a greater sense of certainty. Once the coach becomes more experienced, it is the ultimate coaching tool in terms of advanced coaching, strategic coaching, business coaching, and leadership development.

ONE: ENVIRONMENT (E) this is where YOU start all thinking and conversations.
The Environment is the qualitative dimension of thinking, believing, imagining, valuing and expecting. In life and coaching, all actions are first shaped as a thought or an idea. All that is visible first begins as the invisible. The coach can’t simply ask the client to imagine a better world. The questions must ‘flesh out’ the possibilities of an alternative reality. Environment is concerned with the following:
1. Purpose 2. Goals and outcomes 3. Values 4. Beliefs 5. Attitude 6. Ideas 7. Standards for ourselves 8. Expectations from each other Environment (E) in Action Imagine a typical scenario. You have an important deadline looming at work and you know this is one of the most critical projects you’ll ever deliver. You’re all pumped and excited as you begin. You’re doing well. Gradually though, as with any project, complexities arise. Things change last minute. A team member doesn’t show up. Deadlines are missed. And not it seems there is “just too much to do”. Time’s a ticking and soon you realise you’re really close to your deadline, the project is not in shape where it should have been by now. With each passing day, you start feeling overwhelmed and bogged down with the little details of the task at hand. Ever get that feeling? Not a great place to be at, right? So let’s take a quick bird’s eye view of what just happened there.

Most people would categorise this as a “time management” problem, in other words, an Implementation problem (Dimension #2 of Meta Dynamics™ which we will explore in your Coaching Gift #2). However, doing overwhelm is not an Implementation issue; it’s an Environment issue. It shows we were not able to see the importance of the job in the larger scheme of things. Else we’d have done something to prevent missed deadlines; to proactively preempt last minute changes; to prevent irresponsible behaviour of the team. As a result, we failed to acknowledge the key role this particular project plays in the overall big picture of your company. In short, when we do not connect the Environment (the why) with the task at hand, chances are we won’t achieve a successful outcome as expected. That’s where all thinking should start. It is about clearly seeing the outcome you want to achieve. Until we build our muscle in the E, we continue to struggle with driving home successful outcomes. In conclusion, Environment or E connects to your thinking style and how it relates to creating an environment that is useful for motivating and inspiring your reality as well as overcoming personal obstacles.
