CRITICAL ALIGNMENT MODEL TWO: STRUCTURE 1

META DYNAMICS™ CRITICAL ALIGNMENT MODEL FOR COACHING One of the challenges of coaching is to know what a great outcome is. Whilst it’s up to the client, there is still the opportunity to add value to their decision, commitment or action by pointing out an obvious but unseen flaw in their thinking, or by bringing to their attention something they hadn’t considered. The Meta Dynamics™ Critical Alignment Model (CAM) is designed as a guide for a coach, facilitator, trainer, mentor, leader or consultant to have so they can ‘see’ with ease what to consider when working with a client. The Four Dimensions of the Critical Alignment Model There are, in any situation, 4 dimensions to consider. How well we know these dimensions, and their subtleties, determines how behaviourally flexible we can be when coaching. The Critical Alignment Model allows us to explore our world, our client’s world and the possibilities with a greater sense of certainty. Once the coach becomes more experienced, it is the ultimate coaching tool in terms of advanced coaching, strategic coaching, business coaching, and leadership development.

TWO: STRUCTURE (S) NEXT WE MOVE TO THE QUANTITIVE CONSTRUCTS OF THE SITUATION, THE REALITY WE’RE EXAMINING, THE CONVERSATION WE’RE HAVING.
The second level in the Meta Dynamics™ model is about what you need to ACHIEVE the outcome. Too often, Structure seems to be the weak link in our everyday work, in coaching (and for coaches themselves) and how we approach things in general. For most people, it’s as if ‘living in the moment’ is suitable for all occasions. The truth? It’s not. Because let’s face it: Success at Wimbledon takes years of sacrifice, planning, scheduling, and development of skills and resilience. Successful people, who achieve epic results, aren’t content to just leave their results the way they are in the now and here. They don’t “let tomorrow take care of itself” either. Instead, they take action steps that are supported by a System or Structure based on what works for someone else. The Structure works again and again without the need to reinvent the wheel. That isn’t to say we can’t live in the moment. It’s just at odds with the attainment of financial independence, or planning for children, or seeking a new career, or planning a wedding, or going to the gym, or meeting someone at a specific time, or anything you want to achieve. Living in the moment is a luxury for our downtime. When we’re at work, in a meeting and being asked questions about what we’ve accomplished, letting go and just ‘being’ is inappropriate and disrespectful.

STRUCTURE IS CONCERNED WITH:
1. Categories of performance 2. Dimensions of experience 3. Benchmarks of excellence 4. Limits of experience 5. Planning and organisation 6. Strategies Structure (S) in Action Let’s go back to our scenario from Environment (please see “Environment in Action” section in your Coaching Gift#1). You have an important deadline looming at work and you know this is one of the most critical projects you’ll ever deliver. You’re all pumped and excited as you begin. You’re doing well. Gradually though, as with any project, complexities arise. Things change last minute. A team member doesn’t show up. Deadlines are missed. And not it seems there is “just too much to do”. Time’s a ticking and soon you realise you’re really close to your deadline, the project is not in shape where it should have been by now. With each passing day, you start feeling overwhelmed and bogged down with the little details of the task at hand. We looked at how “doing overwhelm” was an Environment issue. If you look at it closely, there is also a problem on the Structure (S) level. It’s the lack of a working Structure or perhaps, not using, prioritising, and seeing the consequences of neglecting that area. A good example is an operations manual that can be picked up by anyone in the team than relying on one person to do that task. Anyone in the team can build their skill in the new area by following the step-by-step ops manual. In conclusion, Structure or S connects to your thinking style and how it relates to designing a strategy and plan that helps you achieve the results you desire—and your ability to anticipate and solve any challenges along the way.
