Monthly Rant Enough with the ‘I love it, I love it, I love it… oh, why didn’t it work for me even though I’ve done F* all to make it happen’.
WE EARN SUCCESS, IT ISN’T GIVEN TO US. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TODAY TO MAKE THE DREAM OF SUCCESS A REALITY? WHAT DID YOU DO YESTERDAY? WHAT WILL YOU DO TOMORROW? Success is an every-day-turn-up-and-do-it deal. It’s not, ‘I bought this expensive program now everything will be fine’ kind of deal! If you’re not actioning what you’re learning, then why are you learning? To make yourself believe it’s going to happen by hanging out with me? I WISH! My fees would go up by ten! Lean in, and listen. Success is not coming to the faint-hearted or the ‘wish I did, wish I could wish I had’ wannabes. If it did, successful people would be off pursuing something else.

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A SUCCESS IN BUSINESS. GLAM: SO WHAT DO YOU THINK IT TAKES TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS?
SP: Thanks Glam, and thanks for the introduction, I appreciate it. It’s a big question, and not everyone is going to answer it in terms of how they create their business. Most fall short. And I think we can figure out what happened.
GLAM: SO SUCCESS, AS YOU OFTEN SAY, LEAVES CLUES?
GLAM: SO I’M HEARING PERSISTENCE IS IMPORTANT…
SP: Yes, persistence. It’s a tenacity to keep going until you get there. You don’t stop, ever, until you’ve achieved the goal. The quest isn’t, ‘That’s close enough, and harder than I thought, so I’ll stop here.’ It’s, ‘I keep going until I’m there.’ The end.
GLAM: IS IT ALL HARD?
SP: It’s not all hard. There is mostly freakin’ amazing. But the hard bits are what weed out the ‘gunnas’ from the real deal. Anyone can handle a delightful, winning day. It’s who can handle the setbacks and keep going that is going to achieve their goals.
SP:
GLAM:
Yes. Always. There is no magic bullet.
YOU SAY OFTEN, ANYONE CAN HANDLE THE GOOD TIMES. IT’S ABOUT BEING ABLE TO HANDLE THE BITS IN BETWEEN.
There is no secret. There is no white blinding light of clarity that comes in and enters us on the road to success. It’s one foot after another, learning, applying, perfecting, altering, and repeating what works until more in your business works that doesn’t work.
SP: Yes. Wise words, by the way. If all we had to do to be a famous actor is turn up to

premiers and wave and smile for a camera, then anyone could be a famous actor. That’s just not what it is. That’s what we see it is, so we measure their best days as a way of determining their lives. And that’s fantasy. They have 3am starts. 18 hour days. Years of rejection. Literally years, sometimes

decades. Bit parts. More rejection. And we see their premier and think, ‘I want that’.
I love that and I love that book. In validated what I had been suspecting for years… That this success thing was not an overnight event.
Really? When was the last time anyone got up at 3am, morning after morning, because they wanted success? And what about the decade of

GLAM:

SP: I think our thinking is everything. So many people want to hear about a tactic. They want to be told how to put a web site up. They don’t want to read the manual, or

study the class, or transcribe the lesson so they can own the knowledge. They just want to be told, so they can do it. Now
GLAM:
where is the knowledge? It didn’t move to the listener, they were too busy doing what they were being told what to do. It stays with the teacher. What a waste.
WHAT’S THE ROLE OF MENTORING IN THIS?
I grew the moment I took responsibility for
The role of the mentor is not to spoon feed the answers and the templates and the checklists. I do all of that, only because many of my clients ask for them. But that’s
my learning and my thinking. Not for learning a tactic – that’s in the manual. But for learning how to think about problems, and how to solve them, without having to ‘phone a friend’.
GLAM: YOU HAVE WRITTEN A LOT OF MANUALS…
SP: I have! 42 of them. And I figure if I have to time to research the content, study it, own it, learn it, apply it, teach it and then write about it, someone has time to read it. Be okay with being alone and just studying. Download the class and really think about what it’s saying and how it can apply in your business. Don’t phone someone and ask them what they would do, until you’ve figured out your own strategy. Learning isn’t asking for help over and over. That’s learning how to get others to think for you. The reason I know the answers to so many questions, is because first, I think, then I apply, then I teach.
SP:
not mentoring, that’s stopping people thinking. A mentor should challenge your thinking and open up paths you hadn’t considered. They’re there to remind you there’s a bigger journey to be had than the problem of this moment. My role is to remind my clients that unless you think, you’re condemned to follow others into poverty. As someone who can create wealth, I know I didn’t do this through blindly following instructions. I sought input, learned it, applied it, taught it, applied it some more until I got the result. Wealth created. It was NOT from having someone answer all my questions about a problem I have today about some techie issue with a landing page. Nor was it from waiting for my mentor to tell me what to do next. I bring ideas to my mentors. I expect them to challenge my thinking, and open up new ideas, not just tell me what to do.
MASTERMIND MONTHLY | June 2013 | 7

GLAM: HOW DO YOU GET PEOPLE TO DO THIS?
SP: I guess I hold the line. It doesn’t make everyone happy. There are people who think success is from a template. But in coaching you’re not attracting clients because you have a web site or a sales letter. That stuff attracts only the opportunity to work with a client. It works when you have something within you that causes the prospect to believe you can take them where they want to go. And if by chance you do have a killer sales letter, and you convert a client, they’ll see through you unless you have the goods to deliver, so you may as well be the real deal, and learn how to think.
situations. This is because most people don’t hire you just for the good times. They have a family for that, no fees required. The ‘real deal’ can bring value through insights that the client never thought of. They can bring ideas that challenge the status quo or lend strength to a new or underdeveloped idea. The real deal drives the results, and delivers, every time.
GLAM: WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST LEARNING IN TERMS OF SUCCESS AND WHAT IT TAKES, THROUGH YOUR OWN BUSINESSES?
SP: If it had to be one key learning it would be that we must take 100% responsibility for what is working and what isn’t working. It can’t be – I’m responsible for that success – and then – I’m not responsible for that
GLAM:
setback. It’s a package deal.
WHAT’S THE ‘REAL DEAL’?
GLAM:
SP:
WHERE DO YOU THINK PEOPLE GO WRONG? IS THERE A PATTERN?
Knowing your stuff. Knowing how to get through a tough time so you can guide someone else through their tough time. Being able to anticipate the play so you can shape the game, rather than just have stuff happen to you. Being across the aspects of success that are useful to the client, including how to turn around tough
SP: There’s so many creative ways people stuff up, myself included. There’s not one way that I think stands out except giving up. The only true failure is the person who quits. What’s the name of that guy who quit? No idea, no one remembers him.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEONE NEW IN BUSINESS?
SO I SHOULD ASK YOU WHAT BUSINESS SUCCESS IS TO YOU…
SP:
SP:
Don’t do it just for the money, you’ll go broke. It’s got to be because you have something within you that simply drives you to have your own business. Making money gets empty. Making a difference in your life, in the lives of your family and your community… that gets you through all the days. That’s building a life of meaning.
MY TEAM SUCCEEDING.
Learn. Always. Always be seeking new strategies for success. And then apply them. Don’t be that annoying member who asks questions and does nothing with what they learn, and then asks some more questions. Ask so you can go implement, and implement imperfectly. Teach. Always teach what you learn to others, to know you know and to serve. We are here to make the world a better place, not an ignorant place. Be the teacher.
GLAM: DID YOU EVER THINK YOU WOULD ACHIEVE SUCCESS THE WAY YOU HAVE IN BUSINESS?
SP: Nope. No chance. Never. Never. Never. I never dreamed of this. My success is a team effort. It’s a collaboration, not me just banging on about what I want.
MY TEAM DOING IT WITHOUT ME. MY TEAM LOVING
THIS AS MUCH AS I DO.
ATTRACTING AND DEVELOPING THE LEADERS OF TOMORROW.
SUCCESS IN BUSINESS IS NOT WHAT I CAN DO, IT’S WHAT I CAN HELP OTHERS ACHIEVE.
WHATEVER I’VE ACHIEVED PERSONALLY, IS PROVIDING THE PATHWAY TO HELP OTHERS.

How can we elevate the teams thinking permanently into the “E” (ESIP) and achieve the best results?!
In this simple simple motto lies the answer. It is about changing the teams thinking to realize the two or three fold benefit of working toward the business objectives. ICONIC BUSINESSES THE REVERSE ENGINEERING OF THEIR SUCCESS
JOHNSON AND JOHNSON, GOOGLE, ZAPPOS, THE COACHING INSTITUTE, APPLE, THE BODYSHOP, VIRGIN
ALL THESE BUSINESSES SHARE A UNIQUE FOOTPRINT THAT POINTS TO THEIR SUCCESS. IN IT’S INDIVIDUALITY, IT MAY SEEM UNTOUCHABLE AND IS MOST CERTAINLY ONE OF A KIND, BUT IF YOU PAY CLOSE ATTENTION YOU’LL NOTICE A STRATEGY THAT CAN AND SHOULD BE REPLICATED BY THOSE WHO WANT TO CREATE A SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS.
ICONIC BRANDS Branson makes headlines when he gets up to mischief and brings his fun loving, crazy antics… Apple reaffirms their commitment to ‘thinking different’ by launching a steady s t re a m o f i n n o v a t i v e t e c h n o l o g i c a l products, The Coaching Institute proves their mission to helping those who dare to dream with boas and flash mobs to premium schools dedicated to equipping great minds.
WEALTH CREATION Successful businesses get that they don’t sell ‘stuff’ but rather they sell an experience that is congruent with their brand.

This in turn allows for greater capacity of innovation for product diversification as you are open yourself up to more opportunities to improve user experiences. Price points become less of an issue as people don’t squabble over dollars and cents to do business with a ‘brand’ that is a message match for them.
PROTECTING YOUR BRAND Yes, these businesses are market leaders, they have strong business models, their products are innovative, their service culture is artfully crafted but the one thing they are share is they protect their brand at all costs. Tom Cruise is a perfect example of how a brand can go bad. He comes from a string of hits, from Top Gun, to Cocktail and then to the Mission Impossible franchise where he is always portrayed as the strong but silent type, but the one thing that he did to hurt his brand was that infamous Oprah interview where he jumped up and down on the couch and lost his ‘cool factor’. Following that, the Mission Impossible franchise lost millions of dollars in the launch of it’s very next installment.
BRAND NOT BRANDING Regardless of your turnover or how large you organization is, you have a commitment to upholding the perception of who you are (otherwise known as your core values) and keeping your brand promise. But the ‘typical’ branding elements such as your vision, mission, personality, promise and values does not serve to truly decipher what makes these business succeed, and is in-fact too 1 dimensional to really understand what is happening beneath. In-fact there is a process of reverse engineering that also needs to occur to truly understand this phenomenon of successful business. When you look closer at those businesses like Apple or Zappo’s you’ll find there is a strong service culture and organizational culture which comes not just because of the leaders values or an idea, but because of some of the factors as described below.
AN ACUTE MARKET AWARENESS One thing that is certainly not an accident is the fact that successful businesses have a deep awareness of their market. That is, the type of experiences the market wants to have, by answering questions such as:

STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP – TO ATTRACT AND GROW INFLUENTIAL LEADERS WHO CAN IMPROVE THE CULTURE…
CLEAR POINTS OF CULTURE In understanding of the market, and creation of a strong point of culture it has created a powerful brand that transcends the traditional conversations around branding that deals only with the ‘tip’ of the iceberg rather than the BrandCulture. Rather than having ‘values’ being something that most businesses simply do as a chore and then disregard.
VALUES BASED DECISION MAKING However, in every situation successful businesses leader is faced with and make values based decisions – from their organizational direction to their marketing campaigns, to their service culture down tothe people they hire and fire.
INNOVATION - IN EVOLVING PRODUCTS AND USER EXPERIENCES… MARKET LEADERSHIP – THROUGH UNDERSTANDING WHAT IT TAKES TO CREATE EVANGELISTS AND ADVOCATES OF THEIR BRAND… TURNKEY BUSINESS - WHICH ESTABLISHES SOLID BUSINESS OPERATIONS AS A MEANS OF EXPRESSING THE BRAND CULTURE… PEOPLE AND TEAMS - THAT DOESN’T JUST CREATE ‘EMPLOYEES’ BUT RATHER AMBASSADORS OF THEIR BRAND Successful business leaders understand that EVERY moment is a moment of truth for them to either live up to their promise or be the brand that cried wolf.

THE ART OF CREATING SUCCESS SUCCESS, ITS
SOMETHING WE ALL TALK ABOUT AND IT'S SOMETHING THAT WE ALL STRIVE FOR.
It’s also something that I have spent the last ten years researching and understanding, what does it take to be successful. As well all know success is subjective, my definition of success could be your worst nightmare. For me over the course of the last ten years success has been travelling
your life to be about, as Napoleon Hill wrote in his book Think and Grow Rich its to have a single minded purpose. If you are reading this and are not sure what your singleminded purpose is or if you are not 100% sure exactly what you want, just keep calm and carry on. Stressing about it will only block the answers. Take some action in getting clarity about what you want. Once you have some clarity around what you want its absolutely critical that that you continuously grow and evolve these three key areas as you move towards success.
