DIARY DATES

Hey everyone, I’M LOVING THE THEME OF THIS MONTH’S NEWSLETTER – HOW WE THINK. I don’t see people as what they do, I see the drives of what they do. We all have a positive intention behind our actions. To each of us, our decisions and actions make

SUCCESSFUL SALES & CONVERSION SUMMIT

perfect sense. To someone else, they may look… hinkey? J that can be a word!

• JULY 22ND - 24TH, 2013

The goal isn’t to spend a single moment thinking about what people do… that’s ‘content’… but instead, to ask: ‘How did they come to that as their choice?’

MASTERMIND THINK TANK

This question opens up much more interesting conversations than: “Can you believe they did that?’

• AUGUST 19TH, 2013

Every decision and action has a positive intent. If we can come from that place, the question then becomes, ‘What models of thinking would lead to that chosen action?’

• AUGUST 22ND, 2013 • AUGUST 23RD, 2013

My article… ‘Change Management is an Inside Job’ attempts to study how we respond to change using a model I’ve developed.

MASTERMIND MASTER CLASS • AUGUST 20TH - 21ST, 2013

It’s not the whole story, but it’s enough to perhaps give us some tools for understanding ourselves more clearly. Trust you’re loving July!

Monthly Rant WE ARE NOT WHAT HAPPENS. WE ARE WHAT WE MAKE OF IT. Our response creates our reality. It is not the ‘thing’, it is us. There is no ‘out there’ to blame or rant about. It’s us. Purely and simply, we determine our own reality by our thoughts. As we look out at our world, we see ourselves. We don’t see people, or things, or change, or ‘stuff’. We just see endless versions of ourselves.

THERE IS NO ‘OUT THERE’ THAT WAS NOT FIRST CREATED ‘IN HERE’. Stuff happens. Stuff we can’t control. It may seem easier to blame, or feel upset or feel angry at the ‘stuff’, but the growth is in changing our response. What if the only response was… calm love?

FEATURE ARTICLE | SHARON PEARSON

CHANGE MANAGEMENT IS AN INSIDE JOB EVERYONE LIKES TO THINK THEY’RE GOOD AT HANDLING CHANGE.

from the change, how long before we kick into, ‘Okay, what needs to happen here?’

SMALL CHANGES. BIG CHANGES. ANY CHANGE… I’M ALL GOOD!

Again, is it minutes or months?

And then something unexpected, and unplanned, and unwanted occurs, and our world is tipped upside down. We insist, still, we’re great with change, as we reel. But it’s different this time, we say, because of x, y and z. I would have been fine if only… (insert mitigating factor here

We are not programmed for change. We don’t like chaos. We attempt, constantly, to impose order on chaos so we can feel ‘better’. We don’t even know we’re doing it. We need simple solutions to what seems incomprehensible, because that’s the way our brains are wired… if it’s complex, it’s chaos, and we don’t like chaos. And we don’t understand the change, or how it happened, we still have to impose order on the chaos. So in the absence of

that would have caused less alarm). So, is it that we really are great with change, or only change that occurs according to our world view? And the next question… how long does it take us to ‘recover’ from the change? Minutes? Hours? Days?... Weeks??? Months?????? And once we’ve ‘recovered’

data, we make up meanings to fill in the gaps to make ourselves feel better/safer/ calmer/more in control. The meaning we give it, in the absence of facts, is whatever seems the most likely to us, based on our world view. And that’s where our thinking goes off searching for what suits us and makes us feel most comfortable.

IN THE SPACE OF NOT ENOUGH DATA, WE WILL FILL IN THE BLANKS HOW WE BELIEVE MAKES THE MOST SENSE TO US, BASED ON HOW WE WANT TO FEEL. We will delete, distort and generalise to give ourselves the most comfort, and to feel the safest and to protect ourselves against it ever happening again. And remember, we will give it a meaning

It couldn’t be that he quit. He wouldn’t just up and leave like that. He must have been fired. What kind of person does that? Without even letting us say goodbye? That’s so uncool. I thought there was always something about her…

that seems the simplest too us, because the complex can’t be imagined. Put differently, we can’t make up complex solutions in the lack of data, so we make us simple solutions to pacify ourselves that there really is order in the chaos.

MASTERMIND MONTHLY | July 2013 | 5

If it’s a complex answer, that’s difficult to understand, we reject it, because it’s not helping us feel safe in a chaotic world. The less sure of ourselves that we are, more simple the answer has to be for chaos, and the more external to us solution has to be. The more insecure are, the more it has to be about others.

the the the we

Self-reflection during times of change is, to me, one of the gifts of change. When our head trainer resigned, we ‘handled’ it as best we could, based on our understanding of what happened, and our desire to impose order on chaos.

I assess myself and our team on these four levels of thinking (model below). Each level brings with it its own focus, meaning, attitude, and beliefs.

DEPENDENCE: THE DEPENDENT THINKER WOULD RESPOND TO UNWANTED AND UNEXPLAINED CHANGE BY: • High emotion • Worry and anxiety about how this would affect them • Intense need for everything to go back to how it was • Low interest in facts

We would come together each day and assess how we were ‘handling’ the change and how we could do better. The list of ways we could do better was very long.

• Reaction, not response • Highly associated • Seek out comfort and reassurance • Feeling of and acting like the victim

ONE OF THE MODELS OF THINKING I USE TO ASSESS HOW WE’RE MANAGING THROUGH RAPID AND UNWELCOME CHANGE IS THE

META DYNAMICS MODEL OF GROWTH:

REBELLION:

INTERDEPENDENCE:

THE REBELLIOUS THINKER WOULD RESPOND TO UNWANTED AND UNEXPLAINED CHANGE BY:

THE INTERDEPENDENT THINKER WOULD RESPOND TO UNWANTED AND UNEXPLAINED CHANGE BY:

• High emotion displayed as anger and frustration

• Seeking to know how they can assist

• Quick negative judgement • Worry and anxiety about how this would affect them communicated as judgement • Intense rejection of what they cannot control and influence • Low interest in facts and high willingness to judge and assume wrong doing

• Checking in that everyone was okay • Leading others who wanted to be guided • Finding ways to be a calm example to the people not coping • Reminding people that it’s change • Privately communicating

• Angry responses • Seeing it as vindication of what they ‘always’ thought was true

• No judgement because we’re all one and we’re all doing the best we can

INDEPENDENCE:

• No need to understand – the chaos is okay

THE INDEPENDENT THINKER WOULD RESPOND TO UNWANTED AN UNEXPLAINED CHANGE BY

• Curiosity as to the different responses • Learning from it

• Seeking facts to understand • Preparedness to take the ‘observer’ position

• Desire to know when it will resolve

Nothing has meaning except the meaning we give it. This means that we will project onto the change the meaning we choose. And we think this is ‘factual’. Whatever our worldview is, we think that explains what

• Determination to carry on regardless

happened.

• Dissociated

The ‘facts’ we notice confirm this worldview so we only see ‘facts’ that support how we see the world.

• Uninvolved in speculation/Disinterest in gossip

• Trust that it will sort itself out • Learning from it

SO WE DON’T ACTUALLY EXPERIENCE CHANGE. WE ONLY EXPERIENCE OURSELVES. MY RESPONSE DURING THE CHANGE, I HAVE NOTED: • Private conversations/Nothing to say publicly • Calm • Welcoming support and assistance • Keen to move forward/Rapidly moving on • Puzzlement at high emotion • Disappointment at being judged • Quiet desire to grow something better from the forced change • Determination to make it a positive • Curiosity at different reactions/responses • Opportunity to launch new program • Ability to assess where the ‘void’ will be for people and fill it During change, we see our true selves. The self we are under pressure is our opportunity to see our natural and instinctual patterns of behaviour. Because it’s happening fast, our responses are automatic, so we can observe ourselves and how we respond. To me it’s a welcome opportunity to see how I respond, and what my natural

‘BRAND’ SURVIVES THE STORM ‘BRANDING’ DOES NOT

THIS TIP OF THE ICEBERG PHENOMENA IS PROLIFIC ACROSS BUSINESSES IN TODAYS ECONOMY AS THEY GRAPPLE FOR A PRESENCE IN THE MARKETPLACE AND DEPLOY THE SAVVIEST BRANDING TECHNIQUES THEY CAN FATHOM –

WITHOUT THINKING HOW THEY WILL BACK IT UP. From catchy tag lines or new logos’ to new business cards or to slick websites, a new face to an ad campaign or a new telephone on hold message – the list goes on and on. All of this which serves to present an image and brand that more often than not, is one the business owner connects with more

THE TRUTH IS THAT TOO OFTEN THE BRAND PORTRAYED IS REALLY JUST PRESENTING A FALSE REALITY. • And this manifests in a variety of ways of ‘not’ delivering on promise from: • Poor customer service; or

than what the market connects to.

• C o n fl i c t i n g m e s s a g e s b e t w e e n departments; or

With all this activity occurring, the real challenge is for the business owner to look beneath the surface and see their business for what it really is.

• Promotions of new products that go unannounced;

MASTERMIND MONTHLY | July 2013 | 10

Feel free to share this publication with your friends, family, colleague... anyone who might find its content useful

And this is largely because the conversation out there in the marketplace is centered around marketing and ‘getting exposure’ or ‘getting more leads/more customers/the next 10%’ – rather than being supported by more sustainable strategies. That latter thinking is flawed. That type of thinking screams 1 dimensional, Level 1, below the line thinking. The other side of the coin is that the brand is established based up the business owners desires - without any solid basis for expressing their message from a sound marketing perspective nor thought to whether their message is right for their market.

• Who is your market and how does my brand need to communicate to them;

Either way, both miss the mark because of the omissions in the thinking.

produce an environment that inspires ‘on-brand’ messages every time;

SO WHERE DOES THE THINKING NEED TO START IN REVIEWING, ESTABLISHING OR OVERHAULING YOUR BRAND? IT NEEDS TO START WITH YOU AS THE LEADER BEING ABLE TO HAVE A MULTIDIMENSIONAL VANTAGE POINT.

BECAUSE IN BRANDING, IT’S ABOUT:

• How do I need to lead this business to

• What management disciplines do we need to have in place to ensure branded quality assurance is in place for every activity every time; • What needs to occur in every department, by every person to ensure you are delivering on your promise every time? This is true for any iconic business – one that has local exposure or one that is global.

MEMBER’S QUESTION 4.8

QUESTION:

HOW CAN I MEASURE MY LEVEL OF THINKING?

ANSWER: As with everything the best way of measuring your thinking level is to be critical of your language. This will allow you to see where your true subconscious thinking lies. The key is to be as honest with yourself as possible. Tainting your level of thinking will only disadvantage you in the long run.

FIRSTLY, TAKE NOTICE OF YOUR OUTCOMES FOCUS. What is the purpose for completing the objective? Is it so that you can succeed? Is it so that your team or group can succeed or is it so that the greater company can succeed?

SECONDLY, BE CRITICAL OF YOUR CONSISTENCY IN THIS AREA.

Do you always focus on the outcome of the business or is it sporadic? Do you require prompting to elevate your thinking to the Structure of environment level? Or are too focussed on the people’s feelings? The goal is to elevate your thinking to be consistently in the Environment space; focused on the outcome that best serves the organisation and in doing so taking care of all the other levels of ESIP. Reaching a new level of thinking can only be done one step at a time. If you are stuck in the Implementation then you must master structure before you can move onto Environment. Heightened levels of thinking is the number no1 correlation on greatness. Elevate to the environment and you will achieve success.

CHANGING THE WAY WE THINK ABOUT OUR THOUGHTS “IF YOU DON’T LIKE SOMETHING, CHANGE IT.

IF YOU CAN’T CHANGE IT, CHANGE THE WAY YOU THINK ABOUT IT.” Mary Engelbreit

The term Thought Leader is the highest of regards, and arguably the hardest one to achieve. It’s not just about achievements, or successfulness, a Thought Leader is someone who is on the absolute cutting edge of their industry or making big enough moves to merit such distinction. To put simply, Thought Leaders are not only known for radically changing thoughts or ideas about a particular industry, but thriving in it too.

THE PRESENT Neuro linguistic programming has been around for 40 years, and it’s a great and successful strategy of thinking. But it’s time for us to realize that a methodology that was created way back in the 1970s is in need of an evolution.

Thought Leaders in the field have all taken different directions using classic principles of NLP. For example, Tony Robbins took NLP a step further and created Neuro Associative Conditioning (NAC) and began incorporating it in his work as a peak performance coach. We have Michael Hall’s version of taking NLP to the next level with meta-semantics. Even pioneer John Grinder now refers to the original NLP modeling projects as Classic Code, and is now focusing on New Code NLP.

THE FUTURE – THINKING THOUGHT DYNAMICS What separates successful leaders from Thought Leaders then? In a lot of cases, it’s the same thing that made Tony, Michael, and John successful: doing something different and making the idea better, applicable and viral.

SHARON PEARSON BRINGS US A NEW METHODOLOGY CALLED THOUGHT DYNAMICS – THE EVOLUTION OF THIS INDUSTRY AND THE FUTURE OF NLP.

MASTERMIND MONTHLY | July 2013 | 13

WHAT IS THOUGHT DYNAMICS?

IT’S THE ULTIMATE THINKING MODEL FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS AND DETERMINING FUTURE DIRECTIONS. SHARON PEARSON

WHAT TO THINK? For many of us, we believe that the best way to help us change the way we think is to tell ourselves repeatedly, to think a different way. The idea isn't new. In fact, it's very, very old. But choosing a mantra isn’t enough, it is important to learn new ways to do things, even little changes will give you a whole new perspective. By changing or breaking even small routines, your brain will be exposed to new stimuli and will create new neural pathways to accommodate these changes. Thought Dynamics is about getting to the heart of the problem. One of the biggest challenges that professional coaches face in the industry is reaching a bottleneck and getting stuck with their clients. Instead of looping around clients’ issues not knowing how to get to the heart of the problem, Thought Dynamics shows them exactly how.

HOW TO THINK? CONCEPT OF BRINGING STRUCTURE TO THINKING The quote “Chaos is complexity viewed through a reductionist filter” is a great way to gain insight into an aspect of what the individual dimensions of Thought Dynamics can do for us as coaches and future Thought Leaders.

MASTERMIND MONTHLY | July 2013 | 14

We all want to be functional and effective not just for ourselves, but for our clients. One of the most important roles we play is coaching clients to do their best. By doing this, we can help them make better decisions, solve problems that are holding them back, learn new skills and also to d r i v e c a re e r p ro g re s s i o n . T h o u g h t Dynamics is a simple yet powerful framework for structuring your coaching or mentoring sessions. Through various channels we are presented with obstacles that we either breakdown or breakthrough. This model is the breakthrough. When you’re presented with an I-don’t-know scenario, you pull out the tool and it

teaches you how to think about the challenge. You see, there are two steps to becoming a Thought Leader: pushing the boundaries of a particular method or industry and then using those ideas to create change. Achieving those two things simultaneously is made simple with Thought Dynamic’s profound methodology. Thought Dynamics is the pathway to being a Thought Leader. We are excited to share Sharon’s new methodology to those who want to be part of this success and to those who want to be pioneers of the next level of success in their industry.

FROM THE EXPERT I JOHNNIE CASS

UNCONSCIOUSLY THINKING AS SOMEONE THAT HAS BEEN INTERESTED IN RESULTS AND SUCCESS IN LIFE I AM ALWAYS CURIOUS AS TO HOW WHY SOME PEOPLE ARE ACTUALLY ABLE TO CREATE SUCCESS, WHILE MANY OTHERS CONSTANTLY STRUGGLE. It would be great to say that there is a magic bullet, a one-stop shop for success. The truth is that there are many variables that lead to personal success. The other truth is that with the right thinking and persistence one can transform their lives from where they are now to something completely new and fresh.

SOMETIMES EASIER SAID THAN DONE! Of course we can choose to make change now, in an instant, consciously. But it’s what happens underneath that we should be interested in.

THE UNCONSCIOUS. WE ALL KNOW THAT THIS IS WHERE TRUE LASTING CHANGE OCCURS.

In order for this lasting change to occur we need to be willing to pay attention and most importantly pay attention to our feelings. You see your feelings are your navigation system, and your feelings lead to your thoughts, your thoughts lead to your actions, and of course your actions lead to your results. So what are you feeling about yourself right now? Not consciously but rather unconsciously? What did you learn about yourself as child? What you learnt about yourself as a child that has made you think in certain ways as an adult?

MASTERMIND MONTHLY | July 2013 | 16

If you were raised in a household with good strong positive reinforcement, it is likely that you are thinking in a powerful self assured

behavior, old negative self-talk and ultimately your old identity. Remember that the thinking that got you to where you are

way (not coming from ego kind of a way).

now will not get you to where you want to go.

If you grew up in household where there was little positive reinforcement then it might be possible that unconsciously you don’t feel so good about yourself and therefore you tend to think smaller rather than BIG !! The good news though as you all know is that you can change all the negative thinking and feelings from the past. Remember you best feelings and thoughts about yourself has gotten you to were you are now and in order for you to create something new in your life you need to be willing to do two things.

ONE LET GO OF THE PAST. You must be willing to let go of the past. Old patterns of thinking, old patterns of

TWO BECOME A NEW VERSION OF YOU. In order for you to create something new you need to become someone new. You need to feel differently about yourself, think differently about what you are capable of achieving and then actually go out and start to do it. People often say to me how can I think differently. Without a shadow of a doubt one of the best ways to think differently is to stand on the tall shoulders of giants that have gone before you. We know that if we model the best and you can leverage from their thinking. Read autobiographies of successful people and absorb there thinking and then your thinking will change over time.
