Hello to you! I love that our members are sharing this e-mag with their colleagues and members! It’s a great way to share the knowledge we have, and I’m very appreciative of how it’s being received!
BUSINESS & MARKETING ANNUAL SUMMIT MONDAY TO FRIDAY, 11-15 NOVEMBER 2013
THE THEME FOR THIS MONTH IS APPRECIATION AND GIVING. It’s not JUST about being grateful. It’s about realizing that business success rests on appreciating what we do, what we offer, who we serve, and who shares this journey with us.
WE CANNOT DO IT ALONE!

Monthly Rant MY RANT FOR THE MONTH… There are postcards on Facebook that say things like:
“HAVE YOUR OWN VISION OR YOU’LL BE EMPLOYED BY SOMEONE TO LIVE THEIRS”. I believe in sustainable decisions. If everyone lived their own vision in business, and never supported someone else’s vision, we would have no businesses, no environmental movements, no groups of people coming together to collaborate on an idea that ONE person came up with.
EVERYONE WOULD BE OFF DOING THEIR OWN THING, AND NO ONE WOULD COME TOGETHER. So… No Apple. No Greenpeace. Hmmm… But at least we all get to say we’re not supporting anyone else’s vision, yes? What a crock. I have the opposite belief. I love that we can support great ideas and extraordinary visionaries. Martin Luther King Jnr is pleased too!

10 WAYS TO APPRECIATE YOUR MEMBERS When I think of companies that do not seem to appreciate their clients I think of businesses like Telstra and other large monoliths that are ground down in bureaucracy. Which tells me, don’t get ground down in bureaucracy! BUT… that’s not always easy to do as your business grows.
day to day operations of your business, the less contact you have with your team, and the more you must rely on managers to take over teams, the less you can control the ‘culture’… the more systems you bring in to ensure the standards are maintained. The problem comes when we hire people who want the systems and prefer lots of boundaries. They are unlikely to think for themselves, find it stressful to think outside of the box, are unwilling to show initiative and shrink from responsibility. (Yes, a big generalisation, I know, deal with it.)
SO THE GOAL IS TO BALANCE THE SYSTEMS YOU NEED WITH THE DESIRE FOR FLEXIBLE AND CREATIVE THINKING. Go too far with systems, and there’s a lack of initiative. Go too far with flexibility, and poor judgment leads to mistakes.

APPRECIATING YOUR CLIENTS FALLS INTO BOTH CATEGORIES. IT NEEDS SOME SYSTEMS, AND IT NEEDS CREATIVE THINKING.

If you go online there are many ways of doing this explained. The idea is to start with at least five or six client ‘wow’ moments you can create and do them. You can expand from there.
Bring in new initiatives on occasion, just to let them know there are lots on the go. It makes them feel great to be a part of what you’re doing.
A COUPLE OF THINGS TO THINK ABOUT:
On occasion, remind your clients of what you’re doing for them. There is no value except perceived value. If the client doesn’t see the value of it, or didn’t notice the value, from their perspective there is no value.
People will take for granted what they get used to, even if they loved it in the beginning. Changing things a little is always good for maintaining that appreciation.
AS I WAS WRITING THIS, I SAW THIS POST COME UP ON MY FACEBOOK FEED… I THINK THAT IS A GREAT EXAMPLE OF THIS IDEA IN ACTION!

It makes me so grateful that I’m in an environment that allows me to learn and grow as a leader and that others will take the time to help me succeed. This isn’t about making massive changes; this is about implementing what I already know and appreciate. If you’re not already familiar with the five levels of leadership, I recommend you read

make. For me it’s about getting on with what matters. It involves letting go of you need to be “liked”. It’s about bringing the energy needed to get the result. It’s about trusting that people follow where the results are. And It’s about delivering to the team and to the company. Level three is the start of great leadership. It allows for higher productivity, selfmotivation and internal success. It elevates the entire team and drives people to their potential. Every day I appreciate the position I’m in and the people I have the opportunity to help grow. The only way to do this is to be in the mindset and state of a leader at all times. Not when its convenient, or when its best; but all the time.

APPRECIATION IS GOOD BUSINESS
THERE IS SOME COMMON SENSE STUFF WE NEED TO BRING TO OUR BUSINESS. I see our members turn up to our events and I’m always curious about who is open and warm to others and who is waiting for others to be warm and open to them.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? WHY DO SOME PEOPLE WAIT TO BE WELCOMED AND SOME DO THE WELCOMING? I think one type of person is self-conscious and fearful of belonging, and the other is not.
If we’re fearful of how we’re being perceived, we’ll worry about walking into a room. If we’re okay with ourselves, we’ll be comfortable being present to others. The difference is huge and significant in business. Think about networking. New clients you meet. Prospects who feel nervous. If you’re nervous, too, I’m predicting nothing much is going to happen. If you’re open and receptive to meeting people, and appreciate them and what they have to say, everything changes. The next part of this may seem like a contradiction…

is what makes the conversation. There’s an old saying from sales – be more ‘ed’ than you are ‘ing’. Be more interested than you are interesting. So listen more than you speak, with an active desire to connect. This doesn’t mean it’s an excuse to be a ‘wall flower’, holding back and letting everyone else get on with it. People soon detect when someone is lacking confidence. The idea is to feel good about you (or fake it, for goodness sake), and be present to others. The next part of this is to think how you can give the person you’re with an ‘experience’. (Where did your mind just go? :) How can you contribute to their day being terrific? How can you contribute to them feeling their time with you was well worth it? And finally, how can you show appreciation for others? I think a lot of this is done when we actively listen to someone and ask questions. It’s brought to another level when we share what we appreciate about

FROM THE EXPERT I JOHNNIE CASS
TRUE GRATITUDE I’M GOING TO START THIS ARTICLE BY BEING A LITTLE COUNTERCULTURE. WHAT EXACTLY DO I MEAN BY THIS....
BEFORE YOU CAN BE GRATEFUL FOR YOUR LIFE WE ALSO NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT WE ARE WORKING FROM A TRUTHFUL SOLID FOUNDATION.
The truth is we have all heard it before. “Be grateful for what you have, in some countries your worst scenario is someone e l s e ’s i d e a o f a dream come true”. Now this statement may be true and we most definitely do have a lot to be grateful for in life. But here is where I am going to be counter culture.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? Whenever I am working with anyone whether it is one-on-one or one-on-many, I always encourage my clients to be honest. For example, if there is someone or a situation that you are not happy with then be unhappy about it.
MASTERMIND MONTHLY | September 2013 | 10
Feel free to share this publication with your friends, family, colleague... anyone who might find its content useful
DON’T PRETEND TO BE GRATEFUL WHEN YOU’RE NOT REALLY. Same with your job, if you hate your job then don’t pretend that you’re actually appreciative or grateful of your job when you’re really not. This simply causes you to be lying to yourself, which potentially causes you to be stuck in a situation that you are not happy with. Being grateful when you are really not simply means that you have settled for what you have rather than going for what you really desire My belief is that we all have a calling within us, a unique gift, something that only you can fulfill in this lifetime. You are receiving guidance to your calling everyday, yet most of us ignore the guidance because we block it off by being grateful too soon. Remember your emotions are neither good nor bad other than you labeling them as such. So if you’re feeling sad then feel sad. If you’re feeling happy then feel happy and if you are feeling a GENUINE gratitude then feel grateful. The reason for this is because if you’re feeling grateful when you are not really feeling grateful, then you are simply not paying attention to what your real needs are.
bring you out of depression, makes us appreciate others and ourselves.
SO HERE IS AN IDEA FOR YOU, WHAT IF YOU WERE ACTUALLY GRATEFUL FOR YOUR SADNESS AND ‘NEGATIVE’ FEELINGS? What if you looked at those feelings as a blessing and sign from your higher self to pay attention to something, to make changes in your life. Then we can truly be grateful. Most people will try and push their negative feelings away because we think they are ‘bad’. They are not bad they are just asking you to pay attention. Of course we also don’t want to be unhappy all the time. We need to pay attention to our feelings and then make the necessary changes. Once you pay attention you then ask yourself some powerful questions, like what changes do I need to make in my life right now? Then go and take action and then again be grateful for listening and making the changes. Over time you will find that you live from your own authenticity and that is something worth truly being grateful for you. For just being the best version of you that you can possibly be. This is true gratitude.
Now there are certainly many things to be grateful for. In fact we all know the benefits of feeling grateful. It lifts your spirits, it can MASTERMIND MONTHLY | September 2013 | 11

INSIDE SCOOP I JENETTE LEE
“BEGIN WITH PRAISE AND HONEST APPRECIATION” DALE CARNEGIE GRATITUDE HELPS PEOPLE FOCUS ON WHAT THEY HAVE INSTEAD OF WHAT THEY ARE LACKING. SAYING “THANK YOU” HAS BEEN INGRAINED IN US FROM DAY 1. WE KNOW THAT SHOWING SIMPLE APPRECIATION IS NOT ONLY A POLITE GESTURE, BUT ALSO THE RIGHT THING TO DO.
WHY: Gratitude is one of the most powerful tools for emotional health and wellbeing. Emmons and McCullough (2003) reasoned that feelings of gratitude are incompatible with negative emotions. They proposed that effective adaptation to life involves the capacity to substitute bitterness and resentment towards an individual with gratitude and acceptance. Within an organizational setting, this type of adaptation to challenges would be b e n e fi c i a l f o r l e a d i n g t o p o s i t i v e organisational outcomes.
Gratitude sparks an upward spiral of relationship growth where each individual feels more motivated to strengthen the bond. It also predicts feelings of integration and cooperation within a larger group, which means that the more gratitude one employee expresses toward another employee, the more social cohesion they feel among the whole team. Google, which sits atop many best-placesto-work lists, fosters feelings of employee value through an open culture that promotes employee input, routinely rewards a n d re c o g n i z e s p e r f o r m a n c e , a n d encourages personal growth. CEO Larry Page stated, "My job as a leader is to make sure everybody in the company has great opportunities, and that they feel they're having a meaningful impact and are contributing to the good of society."
LET’S TALK ABOUT THE GRATITUDE EFFECT. We expect people to have halfway decent manners. And even if they are lacking that respect, it probably falls down to common sense that people appreciate a little gratitude for their work.

IN TWO GRATITUDE STUDIES, RESULTS SHOWED THAT THE ACT OF SIMPLY SAYING “THANK YOU” GOES A LONG WAY.
#1 57 students were asked to provide feedback to a fictitious student, Eric, regarding a sloppy cover letter for a job. Half were emailed “I received your feedback on my cover letter.” The other half received a gratitude response “I received your feedback on my cover letter. Thank you so much! I am really grateful.” These 57 students then received another message from another fictitious student for feedback on his cover letter. More than double the percentage in the gratitude group (66%) helped Steven versus 32% of those in the non-gratitude group.
#2 41 call centre fundraisers on fixed salaries were observed for a week. At the end of the week, the supervisor personally thanked half of them. In the following week, the group that received gratitude spotted a 50% increase in their call rates in comparison to the unacknowledged group. The Coaching Institute (TCI) in many ways is an exemplification of a culture that scaffolds leadership with gratitude. While all leaders at TCI absolutely need critical thinking skills to drive performance and improvements to realise our vision, we know that it’s vitally as important that we develop the practice of gratitude to be able to implement our vision as a successful business.

THE STORY OF... I NATASHA POMFRET
THE STORY OF HOW TCI MET FACEBOOK HAVE ANY OF YOU HAD A REAL LIFE CHANGING EVENT THAT AT THE TIME YOU HAD NO IDEA WHAT WAS ABOUT TO HAPPEN AND REFLECT BACK ON IT IN YEARS TO COME AND SAY
HOLY SHIT THAT WAS BIG! WHAT IF I HADN'T MADE THAT ONE CHOICE TO (INSERT RELEVANT AWESOME CHOICE)… It was the evening of Friday 13th, January 2012. It was American NFL season and the only reason I remember that was if my husband hadn't been watching football all weekend, I'd likely have missed out on being a unique, incredible part of history... Do you ever look back in time when you were mentally naive and see yourself as some young wide eyed smaller person or am I the only freak? I didn't know Sharon Pearson that well, I'd worked in the WOW team before and saw our Queen regally float (yes, to me she floated) in, say hi, instruct her team and float out all while I hoped to say hi without bumbling my words up, but only when spoken to. That was only 20 months ago and such a lifetime ago.
Well, that night changed the course of my future and I still have no idea on what happened other than I wanted to be in! The TCI FB group was very young then, we had 243 members and it really was nothing like the community we have now. SP posted a pretty innocuous question, wondering how many people are missing out on connecting and sharing here. And then BOOM, serious fireworks for the rest of the weekend, and as they say, the rest is history.
I HAD NO LANGUAGE AROUND FIRST FAST FOLLOWERS, SEEDING OR PRE LAUNCHING, NOT SURE IF SP EVEN KNEW WHAT SHE WAS CREATING BUT IT WAS EXHILARATING! I hardly slept that weekend, the buzz was so electrifying! And the real beginning of the TCI online community began! It's one of those events I wish we knew was going to happen ‘cause it'd make one hell of a documentary! It was my first up close and personal experience of SP's speed of

implementation. I swear, she was out walking her dog and posted "You think we should have a code for the group?" While we're umm'ing and ahh'ing about what to have and how to do it, BANG, she's posted it asking for feedback. This was the weekend the TCI values we live by today were born. All weekend, we'd ask and BANG, SP's got it done. It was a real moment that sparked my fascination in the power of social media. If you're part of TCI, you'd probably have to live under a rock not to have seen me all over the pages. No, I'm not a ‘Facebook Junky’, I'm a grateful TCI community
member and this is where I come to contribute, serve and support our team, that in my mind, is unique to the world. Yes, I was awkward to start with, still stuff up sometimes, and I love that!
DO YOU REALISE WHAT A PERFECT OPPORTUNITY WE HAVE TO SHARE AND GROW HERE IN SUCH A SAFE ENVIRONMENT?
IT'S PRICELESS! I contribute out of the deepest gratitude and respect for what Sharon had taught me so beyond content, the absolute 100% presence and eternal questioning of how we can do better, what are we missing, who's being left out, how can we bring them in to the campfire. I could write a thesis on the lessons I’ve learnt watching and following SP on FB.
