YEAR

Springboard

I FIND THE MIDDLE OF THE YEAR AN OPPORTUNITY TO REFLECT, REDEFINE AND RESET MY GOALS FOR THE YEAR. IT’S THE GIFT I GIVE MYSELF. I ASSESS HOW I’M TRAVELLING. I REFLECT ON WHERE I’VE BEEN. I GET VERY CLEAR ON WHERE I’M HEADING. And sometimes I realise I’m heading in the wrong direction and have to self-correct.

My second mistake was building a goal around something I could not control and influence.

I had (as always) the year’s goals laid out ahead of me. They’re documented. They’re communicated (where appropriate). They’re clear in my mind.

My third mistake (yes, they’re mounting up)

Then something happens that makes the goals look… what was I thinking? This year was exactly like that. There is a professional relationship I thought I could always count on. I don’t know why. There was no evidence that I could count on it. I had just assumed. That was my first mistake.

was to assume the relationship would cope with some strain. So I arrived near the middle of the year. What I’d counted on, was… wrong. The decisions I’d made until then were based on some very poor thinking on my part. What’s a girl to do? I could get down on myself. I could get down on them. I could complain. I could worry. Instead (and I’m not saying this because this is what I always do – there are times I do respond poorly!), I saw the opportunity to represented.

page 6

In only three days the goals had been redefined and reset to take into account not just the changed relationship, but also to make the most of the opportunity it could represent, if only we saw through the disappointment. I’ve done exactly that. It’s been a liberating, exhilarating and amazing time of selfrealisation. I had been compromising myself for this relationship. I had been hiding my true self to keep things on an ‘even keel’. I had suppressed my natural style for their way. None of that was ever going to last. (Yes, what was I thinking!) But what’s even better is that by realizing this, and walking away, I can already feel my natural energy and certainty returning. It’s like a cloud has lifted (cliché, I know). It’s as if the world has returned to normal focus, instead of the muddy focus I’d been viewing it through and hadn’t even realised.

It’s more than that, though. It’s like we’re really discovering who we are, rather than who we were according to how others defined us. I’m not sure about the direction we’re heading completely. I do know it’s within our control. I do know it means we are now setting our own sails and that no one else can set them for us. The relationship is nine years old. I’ve been in business for 11 years. That’s a long time to be involved. The ‘breakup’ should perhaps have been more challenging. But I think we broke up a while ago, and just didn’t know it. So now, with our goals redefined, we are springboarding into the new opportunity this represents to us all at TCI. We’re springboarding towards a different future than what we thought we had planned. We don’t know if it’s better. We do know it’s different. And we do know it’s up to us.

Goals Start with

WRITTEN BY

KERRYN GAMBLE Meta Dynamics Practitioner & Thought Dynamics Consultant

GO! IF YOUR MISSION IS YOUR ULTIMATE DESTINATION AND YOUR VISION THE JOURNEY, THEN YOUR GOALS ARE THE SIGNPOSTS ALONG THE WAY THAT GUIDE YOU. THE THING ABOUT GOALS IS, THEY START WITH ACTION AND BEGIN WITH GO! It’s been said that goals are the most important things. What’s more important is the action taken to achieve them. Remember the purpose of your goals is to assist you achieve your mission - the reason behind why you’re doing what you’re doing. This reason is the source of your drive, passion, momentum or mojo to take on your goals. The bigger, more audacious the goal, the greater the potential to achieve. Without challenging goals, performance will always be less than what’s possible. Conversely, challenging and meaningful goals when accepted result in superior performance. How challenging and meaningful are your goals?

Why is it that some people don’t set goals or set goals and do nothing about them? THE MAIN REASONS ARE:

FEAR OF FAILURE,

FEAR OF GETTING IT WRONG,

FEAR OF WHAT MIGHT GO WRONG.

THE ANTIDOTE IS TO DO SOMETHING. page 8

No matter how small the steps, the act of doing something is usually enough to create some momentum, how much momentum is up to you. Remember, no action equals no traction!

What’s most meaningful to you in the context of business or work, relationships or in family life? The point here is that what’s meaningful in one context, may change over time or with a different environment. When you can clearly articulate what’s important in your professional and personal life, you can set your GPS and map out a journey with a defined template for decision making. During a road trip, your GPS constantly calibrates and adjusts the suggested journey ahead by referring back to your vision (identified destination) and comparing this to where you are at any given time. So your goal represents your “gap on the map”, a constantly shifting trajectory. For your goals to remain relevant to your mission, check-in every now and then and revisit the path or journey you’ve set. There will be conditions you didn’t expect, detours, road blocks or

perhaps new sections of road have made it possible to reach your destination faster than you anticipated. Many people drift through life, mistaking the busyness of the week with purpose and settle for the “rush” of getting through the work day over the challenge of pursuing something bigger, bolder and more meaningful. In a work setting, allocating time to negotiate personal and/ or professional goals with your team, creates opportunities for growth and recognition. Individual goals for your team provide purpose, meaning and the opportunity for your team to feel connected with why they do what they do. Without individual goals (aligned with the business vision), team members are probably under-performing, under-motivated and perhaps under-recognised. When your goals are based around what is meaningful to you and diarised, you’re creating a platform for achieving a satisfying and successful outcome. Successful people create and re-assess goals regularly.

READ YOUR GOALS DAILY, READY, SET, GO!

Meta Change

WRITTEN BY

SHARON PEARSON Founder & CEO of The Coaching Institute

WE’RE CONSTANTLY AMAZED AT INNOVATIONS AND INVENTIONS THAT IMPROVE OUR LIVES AND SHOW US POSSIBILITIES WE HAD NEVER CONSIDERED. AS COACHES, IT’S BEHOLDEN ON US TO BRING THAT CREATIVE SPIRIT INTO OUR SESSIONS. HOW DO WE DO THIS?

What’s the Goal? Extraordinary coaching and extraordinary results are within us. There are strategies for thinking within the lines; strategies for thinking outside the lines; and strategies for inventing the lines and getting rid of them. Our clients want to experience something extraordinary. They want ‘things’ to change, and don’t always connect that the change must come from within them. It’s the same with coaches. We want something extraordinary to happen. We want ‘things’ to change. We don’t always connect that the change must come from within us. So the goal, then, is not to get better results, but become more creative and innovative and resourceful about how they can be achieved.

It becomes a journey within us of developing our insights, our perception, and our interpretation of the world around us, to come up with new and previously unconsidered choices.

How Do You Become Innovative? I get asked this question all the time. I don’t love the question, but I do love it when people love exploring the answer. The moment the question is asked, innovation is lost. The question itself is the problem. It implies that there is an answer to this question that will work. There is an answer. In this moment. And in this moment. And in this moment.

page 11

Each moment has a new answer. Creativity and innovation is not a destination. It’s a journey. It’s an unfolding. And already some people are moving onto other articles, because this is non-specific and ambiguous and everything many people just don’t dig. Innovative thinking is not seeing what is and trying to improve it, or ‘fix’ it.

That’s the ultimate creative question. It’s to deny current reality and all of its parameters and come up with – really – an alternative universe.

QUESTIONS THAT BACK THIS UP ARE: • What’s never been done? • What are other industries doing that we can look at for inspiration?

How to Guarantee This Won’t Work...

Innovative thinking is seeing what is and asking questions that are not about it.

It’s easy to mess this up. All you have to do is worry about this not working. Just get uptight about mistakes, and none of these questions will get any time for the answer.

For example:

The question will be asked, and the answer will be choked out with fear. The answer will be ‘I don’t know’, and ‘I don’t know how to do this’, because it’s going so far into the unknown.

• What is this not solving? • What is this causing that we don’t want? • If we didn’t have this, what would we have instead? • If this had never been considered, what would have happened, instead? These questions are starting to be innovative, but they’re not really getting us there.

TRUE INNOVATIVE THINKING IS MORE:

WHAT IF THIS REALITY DIDN’T EXIST?

Yep, that dreaded place of The Great Unknown. This is the real challenge with developing creativity. It gets choked with the fear of The Great Unknown.

Take a Leaf from the Book of Kids Notice how kids (until adults who know better get into their heads), are able to create and mess up and not even notice? If we can take a leaf out of the Book of Kids, we’re going to be on the way to becoming

page 12

(once again) creative. It’s in us, buried under layers of ‘I’m a grown up’. I am waaay more childlike than many people appreciate. I am irreverent, curious and opinionated. Just like uncensored kids. I’m also noticing the imagination and paying attention to it. Just like kids.

ADULTS WANT TO GET IT RIGHT. THIS HAS NOTHING TO

Our way of thinking creates good or bad outcomes. STEPHEN RICHARDS

DO WITH INNOVATION. It has nothing to do with creating an extraordinary experience for ourselves or our clients. I would go further and say they are polar opposites. Yet time and again I hear adults worrying about how to approach something that’s unfamiliar to them because they may ‘get it wrong’. Kids aren’t thinking that way until about the age of seven and above. In fact there’s some cool studies that show how the education system kills pretty well all creative thinking by high school.

So underdoing the efforts of your education is the goal! Our school, The Coaching Institute, is big on creativity, making mistakes and continuing on. It’s not always appreciated by people who come from the World of Adults. But we’ve been doing this for long enough to see the results. And we like the results we’re getting way more than the adults are getting.

MY STORY

claire

whitelaw brown I didn’t choose my previous career; I woke up one morning and found myself doing it.

Even though I did not have a great aptitude for math, I worked relentlessly for my employers, studied hard part time and qualified as a chartered management accountant in 2008. I now understand through Angela Lee Duckworths, TedEx, that I succeeded through having ‘grit’!

At school I was not academic, I was more interested in boys and horses and left school with an E in math. At the age of 18, after spending a summer in Mallorca, Spain working as a dancer in a nightclub, I returned home to England jobless. I some how managed to pursued a local garage owner to give me a job as a trainee bookkeeper.

When I moved to Australia, I worked for a Melbourne based company as their CFO, but for some time I had begun to realise that accounting did not really make my heart sing, in fact I’d even go as far as saying that it was turning me into someone I didn’t like much. I was grumpy at work and at home and it was making very stressed.

page 16

In addition to this, I was coping with severe endometriosis and living in constant pain. Becoming a mother was something I had wanted for a very long time and my husband and I tried unsuccessfully to start a family for many years, including several rounds of IVF. In January 2014, after 20 years of working in the accountancy profession I quit my job. I started to look around for more work thinking maybe if I worked in the not for profit sector I might be happier or maybe if I worked as a CFO consultant I might be more fulfilled but nothing was resonating with me. I had even thought of doing an MBA to feed my thirst for learning. In February 2014, after another unsuccessful IVF attempt, my husband and I decided to stop trying. I was devastated. I cried almost continually for a week after receiving the news and I fell to pieces.

From this despair something magical happened though. I said to myself, if I can’t be a mother I will have to find another outlet for my need to care for people. And then I happened upon this thing they called ‘coaching’. From the moment I spoke to the beautiful Jackie at The Coaching Institute I knew becoming a coach was the right thing for me. I came in and met Fiona for an information evening and decided on the spot to sign up for the Master Practioner course. My Foundation of Coaching Success weekend in March 14 was a dream, I met other students who I know will be friends for life and Joe and Diego were completely awesome.

I walked out of that classroom on Sunday like I was floating on air and at that point thought, I now know what happiness truly feels like. Since making the decision to becoming a coach my life just keeps getting better. With my husbands support, I decided not to find another job and to commit to coaching full time. I have started working with pro bono clients and had the amazing realization that the intense happiness I felt after FOCS doesn’t even compare to the happiness I feel when I see a client transform like a butterfly in front of my eyes and change the course of their life. It truly is a gift like none other. I feel like I have woken up from a very long sleep and after brushing the sleep from out my eyes I’m seeing my life as it was always supposed to be; I had just got a bit side tracked along the way. This time I have chosen my career and I’m back being a person I like. My friends, family say that I am a completely different person to the one they use to know. I love everything about my journey, especially the hard stuff because I know that when I get to the other side I’ll feel the elation of achievement. Finally, an unexpected thing happened to me this month, for the first time in over 10 years I have experienced no pain from my endometriosis. I didn’t need pain relief, I didn’t need any more surgery, all I needed to do was to make me happy. Thank you TCI, you have already touched my life more than you will ever know.

I’m so excited for the future.

Be Extraordinary

Hearts Minds EACH MORNING I HAVE A SIT DOWN TO BREAKFAST AT THE LOCAL CAFÉ. EGGS, SPINACH AND A HOT COFFEE...

The food isn’t outstanding, nor the price, the foreign owners barely speak English and the plastic décor has a tacky 90s vibe. Yet, the kind, friendly faces always remember you. They bring tomato and chilli sauce to my table and cook the eggs exactly how I like them. Great customer service is impressive and even when the product itself is not outstanding, we will almost always judge a place by the experience of the people we have there. Recently this café’s business has started booming. Attention to detail and care is winning them repeat customers. Undoubtedly, a direct reflection of how they treat people and the personal experience they give them. Never underestimate how much the little things mean to people.

Jesus said: “If a soldier demands that you carry his gear for a mile, carry it two miles.” The saying is a reference to the practice of “impressment” which, among other things, allowed a Roman soldier to conscript a Jewish native to carry his equipment for one Roman mile (or 1,473 metres). No easy task considering a Roman soldier’s backpack could weigh upwards of 45 Kg.

“Good” service isn’t about delivering “good”. People expect good. Good customer service is about exceeding expectations.

page 18

It’s about delivering

great.

Great requires tuning into others, being sensitive to the fine print and delivering on the details. These small things, as insignificant as they may seem, are the deal makers. Finding tomato and chilli sauce on my table is what brings me back to this café and not the many other cafes down the road. Paying attention to the details and exceeding expectation in their delivery adds value to people. If you’ve taken the time to notice what people like, need , want and are prepared to provide those things for them, then you are saying by your actions “I value you enough to put time, thought and effort into my service for you”. Displays of timely thoughtfulness in a self-centred world are a beacon in the night. The same thing happens in exceeding social expectations. Instead of simply providing obligatory social discourse, (polite conversation and queued responses), truly take the time to listen to people and not just hear them, ask questions, be interested and interesting. Then we are saying “I care enough to invest myself in you”. Do you know how many kids Mrs. Robinson has, or Mark Smith’s hobbies? What makes them laugh and how they like to be appreciated? This is how we become outstanding.

forget. Realise the gaps in what they believe their world should be like; the one they truly desire and deliver that. Chiefly, in this service of love we will find the unwavering loyalty and admiration in those we call friends and clients.

EXCEED SOCIAL OBLIGATION: Going the ‘extra mile’ is doing ANYTHING above what you’re socially obliged to do. Anyone can complete what they HAVE to, what is expected or what people say they want. Using good manners, or delivering on time will set you apart little. Truly influential people can pick up what is unsaid and deliver that in a timely and flattering manner. Sending a card to celebrate a birthday is fantastic. Calling someone whose child is under the weather, mind blowing.

Go the extra mile and your clients will come to you.

BE UNFORGETTABLE: When you’re an unforgettable person, you will provide unforgettable service and become an unforgettable business, for better or worse. Be someone who constantly gives value. Inspire those who cross your path with an outstanding experience they will never

2012 was a year of great change for me. It was the year that I made the decision to take action on changing my life and finding happiness. At the time I had no idea whatsoever how I was going to do that or what a phenomenal journey I was beginning! During that year I became a yoga teacher, left a 6 year relationship, quit my 5th (unfinished) University degree and decided that I needed a career that fulfilled and sustained me. Foundations of Coaching Success weekend in December 2012 changed everything for me. I experienced the highest quality of training I have ever seen. I found a community that supports and challenges each other. That embodies their values. That is tirelessly committed to facilitating change, and bringing love.

I LEARNT MORE ABOUT “HOW TO DO LIFE” IN THOSE 3 DAYS THAN IN MY ENTIRE PRECEDING 30 YEARS!

In June 2013 I left my well paid job in the construction industry to focus on my coaching business fulltime. Over the next 6 months I grew from a shy girl who was “too scared” to go to my first networking event, to a confident woman who has run 3 workshops and regularly speaks to rooms of people. I met the love of my life, found an amazing apartment, and have my own fulltime coaching business. My business The Sugar Doctor is my passion and my mission is to teach Gen X how to understand the mysteries of the opposite sex, and bring even more love, connection and sugar to their lives. I love the variety in my job... I can run a workshop, have coffee with a client, work on my laptop from the beach and coach clients all in a week! The future is a sparkling and exciting prospect for me; running workshops Nationally, collaborating with other coaches as their Relationship Expert and continuing to bring value to my amazing clients.

I always wanted to ‘make a difference’ in the world, so I thought I would become a teacher. However, after teaching for nearly seven years in five countries around the world, establishing a charity and a school in Zimbabwe for orphans and children who lived on the streets, teaching in a leper colony in India, and teaching within the private and public sector within Australia, I realised what my true passion was - changing people’s lives for the better.

I WANTED TO DO IT ON A DEEPER, MORE MEANINGFUL LEVEL THAN WHAT I WAS CURRENTLY ABLE TO DO. I researched ‘Life coaching’ and came across The Coaching Institute. I didn’t need much convincing to join, and I have not looked back ever since. Up until the end of 2013 I was teaching four days a week whilst establishing

my business ‘be the change’ and studying coaching. I incorporated what I learnt into my classroom practice. I have a few paid clients that I regularly coach and run women empowerment workshops that focus on ‘mind, body and spirit’. I am passionate about women’s health as my mother passed away recently. More recently I have developed my leadership coaching skills where I now run leadership training for NGO’s, businesses, schools and individuals. This led me to an exciting opportunity. One of my business clients gave me the contact details of an organisation that educates and supports over four hundred body corporate organisation in Victoria. I cold called them, got an appointment, and shared with them what I do. They wanted me to write an article to include in their newsletter for their clients about what I do and how it

page 22

can help their businesses. I have only just written the article, and I am excited about the exposure to so many businesses through this reputable source.

About a month ago I taught a client the ESIP model for their business, along with disruptive leadership questions. They went away to work on one area of their business.

My coaching has led to helping so many people in such a meaningful way. Recently I ran a workshop for year nine and ten students on a model of adult development I learnt in my Meta Dynamics training.

After two sessions and one month later, they gained five new clients, which has increased their client database by 20%! I couldn’t believe it. They said they implemented what I taught them and it works. Why was I surprised?

The feedback I received from the students blew my mind. About twenty students came up to me wanting to talk to me and share their story. One girl was suicidal and seeing a psychologist.

My goal is to share this information to students, teachers, individuals and businesses. I want them to lead their lives and make the world a better place. I want to transform the education system by training teachers, transform teenagers lives by empowering them, transform business by equipping them with resources and skills and transform individuals by providing them with tools they need in order to change their lives.

SHE SAID “THIS IS THE FIRST THING THAT HAS EVER MADE SENSE TO ME. I CAN SEE A LIGHT NOW. I AM NOT SURE HOW TO GET THERE BUT I NOW KNOW WHERE I WANT TO GO.”

I believe that success for me has come down to my mindset, the community I am involved in, my drive and passion to make a difference.

Another student was in tears and said “I need to love myself more. I need to speak nicer to myself and not be so negative”, whilst another said “I can’t let other students stop me from letting my light shine. I need to be truly humble, which is sharing the gift I have with others, and not shying away.” Teenager after teenagers shared their stories. I hugged, coached and inspired. I walked away from that experience knowing this is what I want to do. Knowing how powerful this information is and knowing it is an injustice for me NOT to share it. Another way I am making a meaningful difference is through business coaching.

I use the tools and information I am taught and I trust that it will work, every time. If I have a compelling enough reason as to why I want success then nothing will hold me back. My ‘why’ is that I believe I was born to be extraordinary and leave this world better than when I came into it. It’s to play big in life, to take risks, to be a powerful leader and to empower others to do the same. No one benefits by me choosing to play small.

SO EVERY DAY I WAKE UP AND I ASK MYSELF “HOW AM I GOING TO PLAY BIG IN LIFE TODAY? HOW WILL TODAY BE EXTRAORDINARY?”

I have been legally blind for the last 10 years. A few years before joining The Coaching Institute (TCI) I felt that there was something much bigger waiting to happen and a real passion to contribute and to help other visually impaired people to step out into the world. One phone call to enquire about the coaching program and within a few days I was enrolled and booked in for my first training with the AMAZING Joe Pane in October 2013. I have to say I was initially nervous walking through the doors on the first day of intake. Within 15 minutes I was comfortable and I knew I belonged. I was definitely in the right place with a group of people who were like-minded and absolutely amazing and have definitely become lifelong friends.

AFTER LOSING MY VISION, MY LIFE AS I KNEW IT CAME TO A COMPLETE HALT. EVERYTHING I KNEW AND ALL THE CERTAINTY FADED AWAY.

My car, my job as preschool teacher, my independence and my marriage. The familiar became unfamiliar, the certain became uncertain, relationships changed, and being rolled in and out of surgery for years on end was all I knew. There was one thing in me that kept pushing me through, and that was my drive, my passion, my strength and my willingness to never give up. There was something more. I knew I wanted to make a difference through my experience and assist visually impaired people to move forward but I just could not figure out how. After doing my research and coming across coaching I made the call. I spoke to them about how I was feeling, my visions and aspirations. I can honestly say that the conversation I had with the awesome TCI team gave me the courage, clarity and the feeling of certainty that I had not felt in 10 years.

page 24

My personal transformation began as soon as the phone call ended. I had always known who I was and what I stood for…. but WOW! After the FOCS intake weekend and all the teachings through TCI I learnt what it was to truly let go and took knowing who I was and being the best version of myself to a whole new level. The strong, passionate, confident and caring woman that had always been but never acknowledged, started to shine through and I was becoming who I wanted to be.

After having a conversation with the priest from our church, he expressed to me the issues that people were bringing forward and the amount of value that I could bring to the community. It was then he offered me the opportunity to work with the people of the community to help them grow and have the mindset and strategies to help achieve their goals and to help work through their issues. Again on a referral basis. Of course I said yes to both! The future plans for myself and “Vision for life” is to continue working with visually impaired people to allow them to realise and create their vision for the future and to gain the belief and confidence within themselves to achieve it. I also plan to take this message international and bring awareness to the visually impaired and non-visually impaired that you do not need sight to have vision for life and that anything is possible if you believe

BEING OR BECOMING VISUALLY IMPAIRED CAN BUILD AN IMMENSE AMOUNT OF FEAR AND LIMITING BELIEFS IN ONE’S SELF. THROUGH MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE AND LEANINGS, I NICHE IN WORKING WITH PEOPLE WHO ARE VISUALLY IMPAIRED. I ASSIST THEM IN OVERCOMING THEIR FEARS AND LIMITATIONS AND PROVIDE THEM WITH THE STRATEGIES AND THE

LIFE. GIVING VISION TO THE VISUALLY IMPAIRED IS WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT! I joined a quality living program with Vision Australia which ran for 8 weeks. At the end of the 8 weeks I was approached by Vision Australia and was asked to become a support leader giving me the opportunity to connect and work with their clients one-onone or in groups on a range of issues, along with working with them on a referral based partnership in the future.

Having said all this, I would like to express my sincerest and deepest THANK YOU and gratitude to everyone in The Coaching Institute community for their phenomenal dedication, encouragement and support. Sharon Pearson, Joe Pane, the Wow team, staff and awesome coaches, again, thank you. This is by far the most amazing community I have had the privilege of being involved in!

Do I really need to have insurance?

AON RISK SERVICES Risk Expert in partnership with the International Coach Guild

INSURANCE COMES IN MANY FORMS – CAR, HOUSE, COMMERCIAL PROPERTY. WITH REGARDS TO THE WORK PLACE INSURANCE BECOMES MORE RELEVANT AROUND PUBLIC LIABILITY (PERSONAL AND PROPERTY RISK TO THE PUBLIC) AND GENERAL LIABILITY...

...That is, the risk of a third party claiming financial compensation for actions you took that result in personal injury or property damage that a third party suffers and you incurring a cost.

Did you “do what you said you would”?

In professions where you also provide a professional service such as coaching, scenarios like complaints and litigation are becoming more common place. One way you can be protected is through an insurance policy called professional indemnity.

As professional coaches you advise and counsel others how to better themselves in their professional and personal lives. But what happens if you are alleged to not deliver on your promise. What if a client engages a lawyer and seeks compensation from you. How will you pay if their “case” is justified? How will you pay for any legal representation?

Professional indemnity responds to situations where your client or other parties challenge or ask the question…

Providing a coaching service means that clients potentially can challenge whether you have met your contract. Aon understands coaching and has developed an insurance policy that can protect you. page 28

Aon‘s policy protects you from any alleged claims of non-delivery of services. The legal cost of defending your claim will be covered as well as any financial compensation sought – up to the limit you choose. The policy includes providing financial assistance not just for any amount sought as compensation but for engaging lawyers to assist you.

Are you asked by anyone if you hold “public liability”? Commercial lease contracts often require organisations and professionals to hold public liability – principally in case a member of the public is injured or adversely impacted from your actions. In a working environment where members of the public are more aware of their legal rights and encouraged to seek financial compensation if there is even a remote chance of a claim, it is becoming increasingly important to have public liability to protect you and your business. Aon‘s professional indemnity insurance (PII) automatically includes $10m of public liability insurance when you purchase the policy and can increase depending on your choice of PII.

Remember to seek your free legal advice Both the above situations are about protecting you if an issue arises. But what if insurance could be proactive and provide you a service not related to a potential claim. Surely when running a business you have the odd legal question, but balk at engaging a solicitor. Your website disclaimer, a rent or lease query, or hiring staff – these are often times a five minute query with a solicitor would set you at ease. Aon‘s policy includes 2 hours free legal advice for any business matter – this is not related to an insurance claim, simply an added benefit to provide you broader risk advice. If these issues resonate with you, Aon’s policy is great way to provide you financial protection and with exclusive discounts as an ICG member, at very reasonable pricing. It is a simple process with few questions with prices starting at $154.00* for $1M worth of cover * Price varies depending on state and Stamp Duty rates.

my me MY STORY

damien ryan

It all started with a blank CD. From where it came from or what was on it, I had no idea. Being my curious self, I took it with me as I headed to work. I got into my car and listened. The voice of Dr Demartini resonated through my body. That was the moment I realised that I wasn’t being the real me. I loved me! Not the me who was on his way to the job he dreaded everyday. The me who reflected all the words on that inspiring CD. Motivating, dedicated, driven, inspiring, leadership, strength, determined. I knew I had to expose that real Damien.

I had been hiding behind a wall of fear and what-if’s for far too long. I felt like I was playing hide and seek with myself. I pulled up to work and sat in the car. I pulled out my phone and researched what I could do to change my life around, to become the Damien I wanted to be. There it was. I didn’t have to look far. Within 24 hours of that moment, I was on the phone to the amazing Fiona Mangano. I could already feel it!! I was smiling, I was confident, I was successful! I was booked in for a meeting at “The Coaching Institute” and within no time at all, I had a date set for my intake weekend, to become a Master Practitioner of Coaching.

page 30

It was a weekend in September of 2013. The weekend that I had found me! The most profound 3 days of my life. There was one particular moment I can remember very vividly. I stood there on the last day of intake, as everyone was saying their goodbyes, just looking at my newest community of friends. My eyes were teary and I had no idea why. I had never been a person to show real emotion like that. Then it dawned on me. This is the new me. The me who is comfortable being who I am. It was the beginning of a new Damien. There was no doubt in my mind that I had begun an amazing journey that I will be proud of. A journey I will later share with the world.

I NOW HAVE DREAMS AND ASPIRATIONS THAT I BELIEVE IN.

I now combine my love of sport and fitness with my coaching abilities to inspire and motivate others, to seek out their endless potential. I have created “Inmind - Sports Mind Coaching” to assist athletes and like minded people, to open the door of possibility, to becoming the best version of themselves. Helping people break through fears and doubts of “unrealistic” dreams and experiencing the euphoric power of being the empowered you. With new belief and new direction, I can proudly say that I love this me. I can confidently stand in the face of fear and whole heartedly know that I can battle through it and come out the other side a stronger and more confident individual.

Create who you want to be, not who you think you are supposed to be. Find your me.

DREAMS THAT GET ME EXCITED TO WORK TOWARDS EVERY SINGLE DAY. I HAVE LEARNT THAT EVERYONE CAN ACHIEVE ANYTHING. NO DREAM OR VISION IS UNREAL OR IMPOSSIBLE. THAT BECOMING WHO YOU REALLY WANT TO BE AND ADVENTURING INTO UNCHARTED WATERS TO GET THERE IS EXHILARATING.

to an

extraordinary life

HERE WE ARE ALMOST AT THE HALF WAY MARK FOR THE YEAR! HOW ARE YOU TRAVELLING? DO YOU HAVE KNOTS IN YOUR STOMACH, FEELINGS OF WHERE THE HELL DID THE YEAR GO?

Are you living your extraordinary life or still waiting for it to miraculously turn up in a neatly wrapped package?

beach, I start at 10am after an hour power of study and work til four so I can pick up the kids.”

As we use this time to check in, acknowledge where we’re at and where we want to go I thought I’d share some observations and insights in common themes I’ve seen and learnt by error myself too.

That’s great, articulate it and you can own it. Look after others and it’s inevitable you’ll get taken after.

one.

GOALS ARE AROUND GETTING, NOT GIVING. People start off make a great effort in clearly articulating their ideal day. We can be really specific when it comes to things like ““I’ll be earning $xyz a month, I’ll have 10 paying clients, I’ll have my dream house on the

So how are you languaging the value you’re adding to your clients and your community? What are they saying to you? What are they feeling? Bring it to life. For example, “It’s 1 July and I’m standing at the back of a room of 100, having just shared how ESIP can effectively be used to enhance a team’s communication and I have 10 people elated to sign up for my $1,000 package that offers the complete system for them to share with their team.”

two.

Re-explore where you sit, are you traversing up and down the hierarchy of ideas? And across at what else can be done?

ABSENCE FROM THE CAMPFIRE.

five.

Some coaches attend a training, write fantastic testimonials about how brilliant the training was and go back to life never implementing it so was anything really learnt?

LINEAR THINKING, WANTING TO TICK ALL THE BOXES IN ORDER

Learn, implement, teach. Our community is only as strong as the members that contribute. Share your successes, share the learnings of lumpy implementation, share what you’ll do better next time, just share. To live an extraordinary life takes extraordinary effort. Speak up, contribute, language it!

We had years at school, getting drummed into our head “no, you can’t do that til you have done this” We’ve all heard “I just need to get business cards and my website set up and a video finished before I get clients.” Really? Or is it a procrastination strategy playing safe? An extraordinary life means taking extraordinary action and embracing opportunities especially when it involves a tight knicker moment!

three. NO MENTOR OR ACCOUNTABILITY BUDDY. So we know motivation to succeed cannot come from external sources, it must be a belly stirring drive from within. And there’s still strength in a new set of eyes, a different angle you may have missed, someone to say yeh, you did good, now do more and be better.

four. LACK OF FLEXIBILITY IN THE HIERARCHY OF IDEAS. Without active practise, most people are naturally good at chucking up in the big ideas but never really working out the finer details on doing the do. Others are brilliant at listing the 300 things they have to do for the week without linking it to why it matters.

So limber up, check your hurdles, it’s never too late to check your progress and refine your direction for a massive 6 months to your extraordinary year! DO A QUICK SPOT CHECK NOW: • My goals are focused on the value I provide • I regularly keep connected and contribute with the community • I regularly check in and stretch myself with a mentor or accountability buddy • I’m always checking where I’m at in my thinking, traversing from the pig picture to the finer details and asking what else can I be doing?

living the dream MY STORY

ranjeeta prasad

WE LIVE IN SUCH A FAST PACED WORLD THESE DAYS, RUNNING FROM ONE PLACE TO ANOTHER TO KEEP APPOINTMENTS THAT WE BARELY GET A MOMENT TO BREATH AND JUST BE.

SOUND FAMILIAR? YES MANY OF US FALL INTO THIS TRAP.

Three years ago, I started realising that I wasn’t getting as much as I wanted out of my life. I realised and felt that I wasn’t growing internally. I went out and brought myself a journal (I used to do a lot of journaling during my schooling yrs.). I started writing down everything I felt/ thought, whether they were happy thoughts or frustrating ones. The more I journaling I did, the more I learnt about myself. It became very clear to me that this little thing was going to be my savour/ best friend in the future. It was a gem, a secret nobody knew about. page 34

I started to further “study myself” through this journaling process. And all of a sudden, wham, I wasn’t just journaling anymore, but I started to list things in my life that I wanted to change. This list that I created wasn’t on a particular subject. I listed things such as having a better relationship with my family, setting up a blog site for myself, working on that business idea, becoming fitter for that half marathon run. I realised that once I set these goals, I was able to focus on those things and achieve them. The hardest part is actually sitting down and figuring out what you want for the next 6-12 months. Once you know what you want, you can really zero in on those goals. The best way to start may be to list a few things that you would like to change. Since I began this process of setting goals, I have been having a richer and more fulfilling life. I am able to attract the kind of experiences that I desire. Goal setting sends a clear message to the universe that “you want a chocolate flavoured ice cream”, if that’s what you are asking for, personally I’m a strawberry fan ☺ Goal setting exists in every single business company, whether it’s for sales, marketing or promotion. Unfortunately, we become so busy that we forget to set goals for ourselves, for just us. Each and every one of us deserves to be happy and living a wonderful life. This process can make our wildest dreams come true.

So what are you waiting for? Go buy yourself a journal, it starts today. Shape your life into what you want it to be, you and I both know you have the power to create the life you want now. page 35
