The Ever Changing Business Landscape BUSINESS COACHING IS TRANSFORMING THE WAY YOU AND I DO BUSINESS. THIS CHANGE IS HAPPENING NOW AND WILL WAIT FOR NO ONE. NOW MORE THAN EVER THE SMALL TO MEDIUM BUSINESS IS DOMINATING THE ECONOMIC LANDSCAPE. According to the Bureau of Statistics, Australia’s population is sitting at 23.3 million. With 2 079 666 Small Businesses operating, that means 1 in 11 people are in business. Coaching is now positioned, as one of the fastest growing industry and it is not slowing down any time soon.
In the 2012/13 financial year businesses that started in that time were at the highest risk of closing down if they are earned less than $50k per year. In this series we are going to be looking at 6 Aspects of Coaching that work for Business owners to ensue they are Building a strong, viable and sustainable business model. This series will focus on how these coaching tools give the coach the edge when working with clients. They are able to provide a Service and expertise to ensure their clients are successful along with them. Coaching can change the way we do Business. The skills of the Coach will enable Business owners to perform at their peak while taking themselves and their Business to a new level of Success. page 4
THE SERIES LOOKS AT
There are Six ways to Build Rapport:
THESE SIX AREAS FOR
• Physiology
BUSINESS GROWTH 1. Rapport 2. Setting The Vision For Success 3. Closing The Sale 4. Customer Service v Serving The Customer 5. Peak performance 6. If You Fail To Plan You Plan To Fail
The Business Coach is there to ensure the Business owner is building a Business that sees them earn over $50K and stay in Business for a long time. They will act as an advisor and a friend of the business at the same time, providing not only insightful knowledge and training, but also the support and communication that the business needs. Now, Rapport is the first of the coaching Skills that are designed to create a work environment that supports, encourages and challenges the Business Owner. These skills are subtle yet crucial in developing your Coaching Business. These are the ways to build rapport and strengthen relationships.
• Tonality • Match and Mirror • Voice • Language and Words • Beliefs and Values Rapport is one of the most important features or characteristics of unconscious human interaction. It is commonality of perspective, being in “sync”, being on the same “wavelength” as the person with whom you are talking. The person we each know best and trust the most is ourselves, which is why we find it easier to trust and like people who are similar. In business it is no different. Business owners need a trusted adviser. They need someone to advise and guide them in the development and growth of the Business. Communication is: • 7% Words • 38% Tonality • 55% Physiology When people are like each other, they like each other. Rapport is a process of responsiveness, not necessarily “liking”.
page 5
1) Physiology
4) Voice
Body language represents (55%). The way we use our bodies represents the majority of what actually influences people when we communicate. People who get on well together tend to adopt the same body posture when communicating. They use similar gestures and mannerisms.
(Tone, speed of speech and other voice characteristics)
Look for these things: • Body Posture and Position • Leg Position • Gesture • Facial expression and blinking • Breathing • Repeated patterns of movement with hands or feet
2) Tonality Voice qualities represent (38%) of what influences us. So how we use our voice affects someone more than what we say • • • •
Tone (pitch) Tempo (speed) Timbre (quality) Volume (loudness)
Notice these: • Tempo • Volume • Pitch • Tone • Rhythm • Phrases and timbre they use
5) Language and Words Use language to reflect their meaning style and to help you understand where the other person is coming from. Language represent (7%) of what influences our behaviour • Predicates • Key words • Common experiences and associations • Content chunks
6) Beliefs and Values (What people hold true and important)
3) Matching and Mirroring People are attracted to people they like or people they want to be like. We get on better with people we like or wish to be like and therefore we are able to communicate with them more effectively. Matching and mirroring as it suggests involves matching and copying what the other person is doing.
Match the other person’s values and beliefs by showing an acknowledgement of them. For example, if someone values your time, then a comment that would be appropriate would be, • “I wouldn’t want to waste your time,’ OR • “How can we make best use of this time?”
page 6
NOW LETS HAVE A LOOK AT HOW THIS HAPPENS. Rapport is the ability to relate to others in a way that creates a level of trust and understanding. It is the process of responsiveness at the unconscious level. Everything we do in Business is about communicating. Whether you are selling a product or training staff we are communicating a message. The basic principle at the heart of the rapport technique is that people like others who are similar to them. There are countless ways to quickly build rapport with someone. Perhaps you have the same first name, attended the same school etc. Maybe you have a similar sense of humor, and both laugh at the same situation; either way, you instantly feel more at ease with them because you can relate on a certain level. Mastering rapport is as simple as learning to fine tune your senses and pick up on another person’s cues. When you have rapport between yourself and the client this makes for a session that flows and a place for honesty and openness to flow. This is an asset for you, this provides a place where the client can relax and be completely open and honest.
As the Entrepreneur, you need to ensure profitable growth for the business, while accounting for time & resource management, competition, regulations and uncertainty in the market. These challenges can even double if you are a start-up. Possibly, you may lack experience in problem solving and risk management. With training the Business Coach comes as a professional and convenient answer to solve these problems. Business owners today have to strive for their business goals while facing the difficulties emerging from internal triggers and constantly changing external environment.
BY MASTERING THE SKILLS OF RAPPORT THE BUSINESS COACH IS ABLE TO PASS ON THEIR BUSINESS SKILLS AND ACUMEN IN A WAY THAT THE BUSINESS OWNER CAN USE. WHEN THIS HAPPENS THE BUSINESS COACH IS ENSURING THEY ARE BUILDING A BUSINESS THAT HAS A LONG TERM POTENTIAL AND VIABILITY.
By cluing in to a person’s physiology, the tonality in their voice and the words they use, the Business Coach is given a blueprint to the way the mind of the Business owner works. Once you understand how their mind is working, you can match and mirror their own cues. page 7

kirke Founder of ART Your Life Int. Cred. Master Coach Student
WHEN I STARTED MY COACHING JOURNEY I WAS LOOKING FOR A WAY TO ENHANCE MY SKILLS SO THAT I COULD GROW AND DIVERSIFY THE NEXT PHASE OF MY LIFE. I ALSO WANTED TO INCREASE MY INCOME, OPPORTUNITIES AND FLEXIBILITY WHILST MAKING A DIFFERENCE AND DOING WHAT I LOVE.
As a life coaching student I immersed myself in and completed all of the training that was available, including my Diploma, NLP, Master Prac, Trainers Training, EDISC, Values Pendulum and Master Mind. I founded ART Your Life during this time and it has now been operating for over three years. Whilst it has not been ‘a walk in the park’ it has certainly been one hell of a ride... My signature 7 Week Intensive Program has now had over 400 women from all around Australia participate in it (predominately faceto-face in Darwin, however, also from every other state via my online version).
page 10
I also have an advanced 6 Day Program and an evergreen monthly membership for graduates; ran 4 NLP Practitioner Trainings and certified over 50 practitioners; and held my first EDISC Practitioner Training in Darwin and was very excited to qualify 6 practitioners! As coaches we specialise in coaching women and now have over 5,000 hours of experience of one-to-one sessions and I literally cannot count the number of hours that I have delivered workshops to two groups of women over the past 3.5 years. In October 2014 I also co-authored my very first book called ‘Manifesting in High Heels’ with 28 other women from all over the world. The most exciting thing was seeing it go to an Amazon best seller within 48 hours. Whilst I was a student my biggest turning points were Advanced Practitioner training, (up until that point I had just been playing and making excuses in terms of my study) and also my Trainers Training which helped me to take my public speaking, workshop delivery and stage presence to new and exciting heights. Within my career my biggest turning point was in 2011 when I resigned from my secure public service job as the Northern Territory’s Police Fire and Emergency Services Health and Physical Training Development Officer. When I did this I then launched my business which combined my fitness instructing, personal training, nutrition consulting, positive body image research and advocacy, and my workshop delivery expertise with my newly acquired personal coaching and marketing (from MasterMind) skills.
BOTTOM LINE IS, THAT I PUT MY BOTTOM FAIR AND SQUARE ON THE BOTTOM LINE! I utilised a re-draw on my home loan and six weeks’ worth of accumulated holiday pay to make ART Your Life happen. My back was against the wall and I had no escape route such as ‘just taking holidays to see how it goes’ or ‘wait til your long service leave’ (as many of my loved ones suggested) Through the learnings in the Diploma program about human behaviour I had become pretty good at working out how to make myself do things. I finally understood what motivated me and what didn’t, and what I responded best to and I knew that putting my back against the wall was the best way for me. I still do this to this day, however, I now do it in a more self loving and compassionate way. About a year ago I experienced another huge turning point when my business was in financial disarray. It was a huge wakeup call to keep my eye on the numbers and that no matter how much I want to help people and make a difference I am first and foremost a business woman. This mindset has and is now serving me beautifully and I am very grateful for the financial disarray and the lesson that I learned. It helped me turn my business around and take it to the next level. Within my marketing strategy my most successful channels are Facebook and literally word of mouth. Many of the women who participate in ART Your Life tend to shout it from the tree tops to their friends and encourage others to do the program
page 11
either in Darwin or online. In addition to this, the results that women experience and gain during the program speak for themselves and the new way in which they ‘love themselves, their bodies and their lives’ (my mission and slogan), is incredible marketing in itself. I have previously been advised to implement a referral system whereby participants get a reward such as a fee, a gift or a resource, for referring a friend, however I have a different take on this. No woman that I know wants to make money from helping a friend. She wants to help a friend and encourage a friend because she loves and cares about her. So instead of a referral program I GIVE each woman a $500 gift voucher on graduation from her ART Your Life Intensive for her to GIVE to a friend for the next program. And they do this with much pride and joy. I have also now been a regular guest on several radio stations which has been wonderful for creating even more brand awareness and knowledge of what it is that ART Your Life does. Whilst the interviews have not been about ART Your Life itself, it doesn’t matter because they have all been about the things we help women with such as, happiness, stress management, health, fitness, motivation, overcoming anxiousness, body image and eating disorders, surviving sexual abuse, mindfulness and how to hold oneself accountable to the promises we make to ourselves. These radio opportunities are wonderful for sharing knowledge and tools, inspiring others and growing the reputation and credibility of myself, my team and ART Your Life programs.
The MCing and guest speaker ‘gigs’ I have had have also been key in spreading the word about ART Your Life and I highly recommend. Some have been paid and unpaid, either which way they are a golden opportunity. My advice to fabulous coaches is to BE fabulous! And the most effective way to do this that I know is to take ‘The Magic Pill’ every single day. It just so happens that the ingredients of ‘The Magic Pill’ are perspective, perseverance, priorities and perspiration.
YOUR SUCCESS IS DEPENDENT ON THE: • PERSPECTIVE YOU CHOOSE TO HAVE OF YOURSELF, THE WORLD AROUND YOU, YOUR EXPERIENCES AND YOUR OPPORTUNITIES. • PERSEVERENCE YOU HAVE WHEN THINGS GET TOUGH - AND I PROMISE YOU THEY WILL! THAT’S JUST LIFE. • PRIORITIES YOU CHOOSE OR DON’T CHOOSE. • PERSPIRATION YOU ARE PREPARED TO SWEAT BY DOING WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE AND TAKING ACTION, ACTION, ACTION.

10 steps to being fearlessly authentic tess
bartlett INT. CRED. Master Coach Student
DISCUSSIONS AROUND AUTHENTICITY ARE, AT TIMES, HUMOUROUS; IF WE AREN’T BEING OURSELVES THEN WHO ARE WE ACTUALLY BEING? When I think of my own life I can now see that for a long time my identity was concealed behind a wall of fear, insecurity, addiction, and confusion. I had little understanding of my values, morals or my beliefs. Then I woke one morning, head pounding from the night before, and flinched at my life.
This wasn’t who I wanted to be. I wanted to be a woman who was strong and empowered; a woman who respected herself and those around her. I wanted to live my life with integrity. To take responsibility for my behaviour, to make choices that were for my highest good. Yet I could not even fathom how to make this happen. The only way through it, that I could see, was to venture within on a journey of selfdiscovery. It was here that I made the conscious effort to turn inwards and slowly I learned the true meaning of authenticity.
page 14
7 STEPS TOWARDS BECOMING
You can choose to be utterly fearless when it comes to sharing who you truly are, to stop hiding behind a shield of armour and to get out there and be the fierce person you dream of being. Instead of looking externally for the answers to your problems, you can take responsibility for your life. You can contemplate your behaviour, your actions, and your emotional wellbeing. You can dissect it and get rid of the pieces that no longer serve, support, nurture, and challenge you. The moment you set aside any thoughts of who you should be and simply choose to be, you will find contentment.
FEARLESSLY AUTHENTIC: When I took the following steps I saw a change in my life, on my blog (Whisperings of the Mind), and in my business. I started connecting with people on a whole new level. Readers and clients were drawn to my honesty, vulnerability, and authenticity and made the effort to tell me so. If I can do it, you can too, so here’s what you have to do: 1. Take out your journal and write every day. Slowly your feelings, desires, wants, and dreams will come forth from your unconscious and shine on the page.
3 WAYS OF BEING FEARLESSLY
2. Talk to others who understand you, who lift you up, support and encourage you to be the best version of you. 3. Make time in your day just for you where you can find stillness; sit, meditate and calm the scattered thoughts in your mind and through the chaos will come the beauty. 4. Accept, and love, the person you are: embrace your imperfections and oddities. 5. Ask yourself what is important to you: what are your values? Who do you want to be? What is the legacy you will leave behind? 6. Make a conscious decision to give up caring what other people think. 7. Stop putting other people’s needs before our own.
AUTHENTIC IN YOUR BUSINESS
1. Be transparent In order for me to attract clients who actively seek out my services I have to be completely transparent. This means saying what I mean and meaning what I say. As a creative business and transformation coach I work with creative individuals, empowering them to be their most authentic selves knowing that this is what will assist in personal and business growth. If I am not being authentic, then how can I expect my clients to be? I am clear about my values, certain about my beliefs, and confident in my ability to create change. I don’t hold back from sharing stories about fear, vulnerability, perfectionism, grief, and pain because these are human emotions and behaviours that we all experience at some point in our lives. It is about knowing how to deal with these that is of significance.
page 15
I choose to share these stories because it is who I am and I am proud of who I am and how I got here and I know that being authentic in every way will inspire others. You can choose to let go of what other people think and to be forthright with your message. Being transparent opens up channels of communication and creates a curiosity in others. When you do this your light shines brightly and your clients are attracted to your glow. A coaching practice that comes from a place of authenticity will easily blossom.
“IMITATION MAY BE THE SINCEREST FORM OF FLATTERY HOWEVER IT’S EXHAUSTING KEEPING UP THE FAÇADE OF TRYING TO BE SOMETHING OR SOMEONE YOU’RE NOT. BE AUTHENTIC AND THE WRITING AND CONTENT CREATION WILL FLOW. YOUR TRIBE WILL GRAVITATE TOWARDS YOU AND YOUR WORK, AND WILL BECOME LOYAL SUPPORTERS IN NO TIME.”
Janelle Ledwidge
2. Build connections not walls Being authentic when marketing means not holding back. Tell it like it is and divulge enough information about yourself and your services so as to portray legitimacy. Think about a person you love in your life. What draws you to them? What is it about them you love? When you talk, are you completely honest? Do you hide anything from them or are you completely transparent? We connect with people when the message they spread is real. When we treat our target market like a loved one we engage with them on a different level. People will come to us because they trust us, because they are drawn to our own personal style. Fallacy creates scepticism, while authenticity creates curiosity. Choose authenticity over pretence and you will create an extraordinary business. When you write content straight from the heart your reader will connect from the heart. When you regurgitate what you have heard or read and don’t believe it, they won’t believe it. It’s as simple as that. Know what is important to you. Identify your values, your mission, your vision and reconnect to your purpose. For what purpose are you engaging with your target market in the first place? If you speak the language of the heart your values will shine through your words and the right people will hear.
“WHEN THE PUPIL IS READY, THE MASTER APPEARS” (1927)

3. Have integrity “BE WHO YOU ARE AND SAY

WHAT YOU FEEL, BECAUSE THOSE WHO MIND DON’T MATTER AND THOSE WHO MATTER DON’T MIND.” DR. SEUSS
RALPH WALDO EMERSON Authenticity means having integrity – saying what you mean and meaning what you say. Be the person you claim to be. If, for

If you find that delving deeply into what matters to you is difficult or painful then get a coach and be willing to learn about yourself and who you truly are. Inspiring others must come from the heart. Once you journey within, your true power will shine and you won’t feel the need to sell yourself or your products as it will simply radiate from your being.

MEASURING
Organisational Change THROUGH PRODUCTIVITY “AS THE COACHING INDUSTRY CONTINUES TO GROW AND ENTERS THE MATURITY PHASE OF ITS LIFE-CYCLE, THE PRESSURE TO SHOW THAT COACHING WORKS AND ADDS VALUE IS LIKELY TO INTENSIFY” (PRACTICAL METHODS FOR EVALUATING COACHING, INSTITUTE FOR EMPLOYMENT STUDIES, UK, 2006)
This quote demonstrates the importance of the relationship between coaching outcomes and the business performance measures of an organisation. Organisations know that a problem exists when their performance measures do not align with the established benchmarks and often find it difficult to articulate options for the solution because they have an incomplete or abstract understanding of the problem. Furthermore, the scope of this articulation may suffer should the problem definition address one specific area or measure at the expense of processes that align in a complementary manner to the page 20
identifiable problem areas as well as to the vision of the organisation.
This article is first in a series of six (6) that looks closely at those performance measures of an organisation that are numerically quantified, standardised, and aligned to productivity and then suggests that other factors that are less quantifiable can be equally as valuable in the assessment of organisational productivity. Firstly, it is important to look at the word productivity and come to a shared understanding of its meaning in the context of organisational performance. Historically, productivity was viewed as “the effectiveness of productive effort, especially in industry, as measured in terms of the rate of output per unit of input” (Google). During the industrial age, inputs and outputs were easily measured and quantifiable as products moved through the production processes of large manufacturing plants. The knowledge age, however, has presented challenges for measurement, because outputs are no longer isolated to widgets and need to include measurements that somehow capture “the state or quality of being productive” (Google). It is these intangible measures that present the greatest challenges to increasing productivity.
Single measures, such as labour productivity (or value added per worker) cannot provide a complete picture for the organisation. Specialist consultants are trained to focus on “technical elegance and statistical accuracy of productivity indexes” (Chew B. Harvard Business Review, 1988) at the expense of the issues that managers face motivating and mentoring their staff toward achieving the benchmarks. An integrated approach that measures the various dimensions of an organisation’s performance is able to demonstrate how each of them effects overall performance. Integral in that measurement is the role of employees, and connecting their actions and behaviours to outputs. It is this integrated approach that a coaching solution is able to address in a quantitative and qualitative manner because it is able to identify “the state or quality of being productive” in terms of behaviours, and approach the solution within a holistic framework.
Perhaps it is now appropriate to ask the questions – why productivity and why measure it? Firstly, it can be applied systematically across the organisation to increase its long-term competitiveness and profitability. It’s essential to measure productivity appropriately. page 21

Odd Sock LEADER THE
Dare to BE... 4 Principles of Being the Odd Sock Leader IT IS SO EASY FOR US TO BE DEFINED BY OUR ENVIRONMENT INSTEAD OF BE1. FOR SOME, OUR ENVIRONMENT DICTATES WHO WE ARE AND HOW WE LEAD. IT IS “WHAT IS DONE” 2, “HOW IT IS” AND “THE WAY WE HAVE ALWAYS DONE IT” 3. TRUE LEADERSHIP4 IS ABOUT MAKING A DIFFERENCE, LEADING PEOPLE TO ACHIEVE ABOVE AND BEYOND WHAT IS EXPECTED5. IT IS DARING TO STEP OUTSIDE WHAT OTHERS DO AND ACTUALLY TAKE ACTION, STAND UP FOR WHAT YOU BELIEVE IN. DO SOMETHING!
page 22
THE ODD SOCK (OS) LEADER IS A TRUE LEADER, SOMEONE WHO THINKS OUTSIDE THE SQUARE; SOMEONE WHO DOES NOT WASTE TIME ON THINGS THAT DO NOT MATTER6. The OS Leader mindset is one that recognises people as their greatest asset in achieving a goal. The OS Leader has removed limiting phrases such as “not enough time”, “it can’t be done”, “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” from their vocabulary and thoughts. The OS Leader keeps going until the goal is achieved. They believe in Kaizen! They build up others to lead beyond their time. The heart of what they do is reflected in all of their actions, and is what makes them stand out from the pack. Becoming an OS Leader requires humility, self-awareness, passion and conviction to drive the achievement of goals. There are many things7 that a person does to be an OS Leader, the first being looking after “self”. This is not in order to be selfish. It is to know who you are (BE), celebrate it and change the things you are not happy with. It is really that simple. Odd Sock Leader principles can be copied8, as their lives are an open book for anyone to read9. They have energy, joy, belief and determination as the key drivers for how they operate every day. Here are a few things to prepare you for your pilgrimage...
One. TAKE CARE OF YOUR BODY • Exercise is good for a number of things… losing weight, maintaining weight, boosting your mood, reducing the risk of many and varied diseases… Do I need to say more? • Fuel – your food determines your response times and your ability to sustain yourself throughout the day
Two. YOUR SOUL • Who are you? Seek to spend time understanding who you are and what you want to achieve… Ignite your passion daily by reflecting on your goals • What else do you need to achieve your ultimate self? What do you need to know? Who do you need to talk with? • Rejuvenate – take time out of your activity to rest and rejuvenate, do something you love, and celebrate the life that you have
Three. YOUR SPIRIT • Your beliefs and faith in spirit define your actions and guide you on your journey. Strengthen your beliefs through reading and gathering support to stabilise your spirit in preparation for challenges you will face
page 23
• Cleanse your spirit of the beliefs that creep in through environmental influence you come in contact with. Remove the beliefs that do not serve and replace them with ones that do • Love and want to serve others. Be joyful in opportunity to serve and give back to your community. Give messages of thanks and gratitude to those around you, be real, thank them for what they actually did
1. BE – to be or not to be… that is the question… BE is who you are, BE is you, BE is no one else, it’s you, your values and your God-given gifts 2. My mother did it this way… 3. You kick the soccer ball whilst standing upright… tell that to René Higuita 4. Leadership is not defined by position or title 5. Expectations are beliefs of what is achievable in the community/ industry/area of life
Four. SHARE YOUR CHALLENGES
6. Such as trying to find matching socks
• Everyone faces challenges, everyone faces difficulties, everyone “stuffs up”, so be honest10 with these things. Deeper and influential relationships are formed when we are honest and open with those around us • BE you, face your fears and be honest about what you believe, be honest about what you think11 and be honest about
7. Thing… technical term for when the exact word escapes you! 8. To enable continuation of your pilgrimage beyond you, it’s important your principles can be replicated (please note this is not about conforming; it is the values behind the actions) 9. And yes this means that if that text you are about to send is not something you want others to read… maybe you should not send it!
what you know. Respect is earned, and it does not come from having a title or being famous
10. Honesty… does not mean what you are willing to share… it means what actually happened. Don’t eat a whole block of chocolate and only write down a couple of squares… your results will call your actions (apparent) into question, and this will weaken trust in your leadership
These four things provide a foundation for a courageous pilgrimage. They instil courage, strength supportive beliefs, and joy at the very core of your being. OS Leaders are different because they actually DO these actions regularly. They understand that being strong and healthy is the only way to lead others. You need strength to Be, Believe and Achieve and take others on the same journey.
11. Without tearing down others! Share your beliefs with no expectation that others MUST have the same ones or be converted to your way of thinking; share them with curiosity for what others may think
