From the editor ... THE ULTIMATE COMPLIMENT

As all riders know, when someone labels us competent or talented in that area of life, nothing else really matters, not the way we look or what we drive or even how intelligent other people think we are. And if someone compliments our horses, it’s just as good, am I right? Case in point: a friend of a friend visited my barn a few years ago. At the time, I had a really nice-looking red roan Quarter Horse. The guy knew nothing about horses, but his reaction when he saw my gelding was, “He’s magnificent.” Magnificent! He said magnificent! I walked around on a cloud for the rest of the day, knowing he very well might have said that about any horse. That really didn’t matter, though; for some reason, I was over the moon after that compliment. If he had said my hair looked magnificent (and I can assure you that when I’m at the barn, it does not), I would’ve given him a warning look and backed away slowly from this obviously ill-intentioned giver of false compliments. But since he complimented my horse, I assumed the accolade to be true and wore it like a badge of honor, telling people about it for the rest of the day. There’s just nothing like it is there? Being recognized for something you do or own in relation to horses, I mean. And that’s what we try to do in every edition of The Collective Equestrian; we recognize horsemen and business owners who are contributing to the horse world in a significant way on the local level. I think you’ll enjoy our journey into the everyday life of Southeastern Saddle Fit owner Amanda Silver. If you’re a Schleese owner in the Southeast, you’ve no doubt met her or at least heard of her. We’ve also checked back in with the Berry College Equestrian Team to see how they are faring in their quest to defend their IHSA Western Team National Championship title. And as Valentine’s Day approaches, take a look through our gift guide for a beautiful and eclectic collection of locally-produced, horse-related goods. As always, we’ve included our hand-picked directory of quality artisans, craftsmen and professional horsemen from across the Southeast. If you would like to be considered for inclusion, please contact me at editor@collectiveequestrian.com. I do hope my CE readers haven’t lost too much riding time this winter. Don’t despair though - we’re on the home stretch, and we have just a couple more months of short days and ankle deep mud. After that it’s horseflies and scorching heat, but we’ll be in your inbox to get you through it all!

dren as much as possible. They’ve made Edisto Beach State Park in South Carolina a regular destination; the kids can feed the aquatic animals and mountain bike. As for the more pedestrian details of a typical day for the family - the ones that don’t involve beautiful scenery - the Silvers have stuck a balance teaching the children between saddle fitting sessions. They use a curriculum from a private school based in California; Amanda teaches when the family is at home and Dan instructs when they’re on the road. Traveling with the entire family means certain things like overnight

When the family is on the road, Dan helps with certain aspects of the saddle fitting sessions; when they are at home, he runs his own grading business. When a cliAmanda and Dan Silvers with their children, Bo, 7, and Brooke, 5. ent contacts the Southeast Saddle Fit team, they can expect a response within 24 hours. Making people feel as though she’s available, even though she may be several states away, is key in serving a clientele that depends on her to make regular adjustments.

The Saddles The saddles on the Southeast Saddle Fit trailer all have at least one thing in common - they’re made by Schleese Saddlery, a Canadian company. Amanda performs fittings on all brands of saddles, but she only sells Schleeses as a representative for that company. Her association with Schleese began years ago when she began having saddle fit issues of her own. She had just received her certificate to teach from the Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA). Engulfed in the quest to find the right saddle for her horse, she pursued certification with the Saddle Fit 4 Life network and secured an internship with Schleese. The internship sent her to Florida and also to Canada, where

FIT From Page 5 she returns each year to renew her certification as a technician for Saddle Fit 4 Life and Schleese. In her extensive exploration of the world of high-end saddles, Amanda has found Schleese to be the one brand of saddle that can truly deliver on the oft-heard “fully adjustable” claim. She attributes this finding to the fact that Schleeses can be widened or narrowed around the horse’s withers, not simply along the gullet. “I was blown away by their adaptability,” she recalled of her early experiences with the saddles. As technology has advanced, so have fitters’ abilities to visualize through processes like thermographing where improperly fitted saddles are hurting horses. “We really see the damage that’s being done,” Amanda said. On the flip side, she’s able to help horses with this knowledge. “I can really make all the needed adjustments, ergonomically, for the horse,” she explained.

2016: WHAT TO BUY

Rhinestone Cowgirl

T

Jen Telgen, of Dallas, Ga. has become a creative force when it comes to crystals. It all started a few years ago when she decided not to shell out the requisite hundreds of dollars for a blinged-out show shirt, opting instead to attach her own crystals to a pre-made shirt. Telgen had recently started showing horses at the time, following a recovery from a brain injury she sustained in a 2011 car accident. The riding was therapeutic, as was the creativity she discovered in working with crystals. These were two talents she didn’t realize she had. “Before (the accident), I didn’t have a creative bone in my body,” she said. She calls her newfound craft a gift from God. “He showed me sunshine in this tragic place,” she explained. Today, her creations range from show shirts to belts to horsehair jewelry and even a crystal encrusted cow skull. This commission was actually a memento for a client who had recently lost her pet cow; the sparkling skull now resides in the client’s home behind glass. Telgen’s more pedestrian custom orders include belts with custom conchos or crystals, window decals, fully customized shirts with colored crystals and appliques and commemorative bracelets made from horse tail hair. They are, appropriately, marketed under her Rhinestone Cowgirl moniker.

2016: WHAT TO BUY

Hugs for Horses When Maddie Frye put out a feeler on Facebook this past fall - something to the effect of “who would buy a customized stuffed horse-” she didn’t realize she was kicking off a cottage business. She got more than 100 enthusiastic comments within the span of 24 hours. As of early January, she was booked out with orders for the next 12 weeks. Frye christened her fledgeling business Hugs for Horses and says she’ll use the money to fund a longtime dream of riding - she plans to purchase lessons or lease a horse. Each stuffed horse starts off with a knitted shell and is then stuffed in such a way that it remains floppy. Frye learned to knit at the tender age of nine when her mom introduced her to the activity. “It was just something we did together,” Frye recalled. “It’s very therapeutic.” The ponies are made to sit “on their rumps,” Frye said, and she makes sure each one has the special markings in the pictures their owners send. When the CE talked to her, she was about to start work on a leopard Appaloosa. “That one’s going to be fun,” she said. “Luckily it’s got big spots.” She’s only had to turn down a couple of orders because of difficulty

FIT From Page 9 - they were varnish roans. Each horse typically takes around 35 hours to make, and custom orders are currently priced at $45. Frye said she’ll probably bump that price point up in the near future because she’s so flooded with orders. Wait time for a custom order is approximately six weeks. If you need something in time for Valentine’s Day, don’t despair! Frye is also starting to offer a smaller stuffed pony that will be available in solid colors only and is designed to stand by itself.

See Hugs for Horses on Facebook for contact and ordering information.

Horse Hubby

Horse Hubby blog creator Timothy Harfield has once again perfectly captured the selflessness and creativity of the long-suffering horse husband - this time in calendar form. These 12-month 2016 calendars are the result of Horsehubby.com’s first calendar contest in which readers’ submitted photos were chosen for their often humorous portrayals of the men who support the female riders they love. “Horse Hubbies do the darndest things! They look super sexy cleaning stalls, and absolutely fabu-ridiculous when resting atop mighty steeds (or clinging desperately to the smallest of ponies),” according to the calendar’s description at its point of distribution, the Equibox Equestrian online store. The calendar features hilarious-but-typical horse show images of husbands holding horses and baby strollers simultaneously, husbands bedecked in miscellaneous discarded tack and ribbons and even a husband posing by his tailgate with a sign reading “Horse husbands: need a drink?” This true-to-life calendar will make a memorable gift that can be enjoyed all year by horse husbands and riders alike. To order: calendars are available from online retailer Equibox Equestrian.

Zaudke Wilkins, artist. See a gallery of works on the website www.zaudkesculpture.com and Like the Facebook page. Wilkins says about her works, "Nature is my muse. Opposing textures, the tilt of a head, or simply the way a jaw and neck join. These captured moments of nature and everyday life is what I strive to create. Different aspects of each animal enchant me. Most often I find it is texture, mass and the relationship of environment and animal which triggers the creative impulse. I am constantly striving to capture the essence of what enchants me most about horses."
