From the editor ... My horse-themed tour of North Ga.

I hope you’ve had a fun and horse-filled summer so far. Mine has been both of those things - it’s included a tour of North Georgia of sorts. I’ve gotten to spend some quality time with horse friends - some who I’ve known since college, some who are newer acquaintances - and it’s made me appreciate how fortunate I am to know such a variety of riders. I kicked my summer riding off with an extended visit mid-June with my longtime friends Dana and Nikki Surrusco of Ellijay, Ga. They own HorseSense Riding Academy, and I’m not exaggerating when I say they have one of the finest lesson programs in the state. Nikki’s an AH-rated former Pony Club member, and she integrates into her barn the meticulousness that is the trademark of longtime Pony Clubbers. Everything in her tack room and feed storage area is organized and labeled according to which horse uses it. Each horse and pony living within the carefully-maintained electric fencing at HorseSense wears a fly mask to maximize grazing comfort during the day, and Nikki can give you the rundown on the health history of every equine in her care. In fact, I view her as my “older horse” guru. She has a knack for keeping aging lesson horses happy, healthy and sound well into their 30s. I had the best time riding in the mornings on her bouncy custom footing (ground carpet remnants mixed with sand) and watching Nikki build up the mental and physical foundations of the young riders in her lesson program as they hopped over crossrails and counted strides in between. Next, I had the distinct pleasure of seeing an artist at work in early July. I had sent my young paint horse, Chase, to a friend to be started under saddle. I had done all the groundwork myself - lungeing, tacking, driving - I’d even sat on the little guy, but I wanted someone with lots of horse-starting experience to actually “walk him off” under saddle for the first time. That person was Chad Childers, of Calhoun, Ga. - full-time farrier and part-time colt starter. He comes from the gritty world of bareback riding, so he can literally stay on anything. The thing that I value about Chad, though, is the fact that he can read a young horse so well. His focus for Chase was to instill respect and confidence, and when I stopped by to ride the colt for the first time, I could tell Chad had done some of his best work. Chase knew what was being asked of him, from the time he was led to the arena to the first time I smooched him up into an easy lope, and he was happy to do his job. It was a genuine pleasure to talk with Chad about his riding philosophy and learn that he instinctively seeks rhythm relaxation and straightness in the young horses he rides. His motto is “Set them up to win.” Mission accomplished, Chad! I look forward to reinforce these concepts in Chase. Finally, later in July, I stopped by the Mustang and Wild Horse Rescue of Georgia (MWHRG) tack swap at Wills Park in Alpharetta. The association’s executive director, Elizabeth Montgomery, did a fabulous job of pulling together members of the local horse community. There were booths housing professionals and enthusiasts from all walks of horsey life: a chiropractor, an equine herbalist, a masseuse, crafters and several used tack sellers. It was a real pleasure to walk from booth to booth and introduce myself to these movers and shakers who seek to make the local horse world a better place and stay connected while doing it. I hope MWHRG hosts this event again. As for this issue, you’ll find, as always, a varied slice of the horse world: the jewelry designer who knows what riders wear, the local author who knows what riders read and, of course, our carefully-curated summer reading list. You’ll also notice we’ve partnered with Countryside Veterinary Services in Covington, Ga., for a veterinary column featuring issues pertinent to the Southeast. You’ll also see our giveaway ad. We’re going to be conducting these events regularly, so watch your inbox and Facebook for chances to win all sorts of amazing equine products from Southeastern businesses. I hope you enjoy the rest of your summer, and most of all, I hope it’s horse-filled! Sincerely,

Vincent Peach:

The jewelry designer who understands riders A Nashville jewelry designer who has catered to such celebrities as Reba McEntire and Connie Britton is now seeking to install staples in equestrian wardrobes. With his beautiful but practical designs, Vincent Peach is well on his way. Like preceding Vincent Peach collections, the new Equestrian Collection features pearls prominently. Many of the pieces, with their simplicity and sturdiness, wouldn’t look out of place on a rider schooling in a sandy arena or braiding a horse on the showgrounds. Durability, Peach says, is key in his designs. His bracelets and necklaces often feature leather as their bases with pearl accents. They’re ready to stand up to riders’ lifestyles, according to Peach. A pearl’s exterior layer, or nacre (also known as mother of pearl), is as hard as enamel on teeth, he explains. He can personally vouch for the longevity of his pieces, having worn a good many of them, literally, everywhere. “My particular pieces that I wear, I never take off - I shower in them!” he says. When he added the equestrianthemed line to his already extensive jewelry collection, Peach was attempting to meld functionality with a sense of indulgence, in a Ralph Lauren sort of way. He calls the resulting effort “a combination of living the equestrian lifestyle and sophisticated luxury.” The rustic aesthetic of the Equestrian Collection pieces have made them popular with the Nashville crowd. Country singers McEntire and Carrie Underwood have been spotted

Britton, of the country music-centered television drama “Nashville,” has also partaken of the Equestrian Collection, according to Peach. As he broadens his Equestrian Collection offerings, it seems riders are taking note. Vincent Peach designs were featured in the Churchill Downs Magazine Derby Edition earlier this year and also made an appearance at the Four Seasons booth at the 2016 International Polo match in Wellington, Fla. Peach grew up watching his family make a living in the wholesale pearl business, so it was only natural for him to incorporate the gems into his designs. He plans to add some

Western-themed pieces to the Equestrian Collection, as well as diamond accents, but pearls, he says, will always have their place in his creations. Like his relationship with pearls, his association with horses stretches back to his childhood. He’s kept a foot in the equestrian world as owner of the aptly-named and iconic “La Pearla” ranch. “It’s a landmark spot in Nashville,” Peach explains. “It’s a big part of who I am.” The land boasts three log cabins, and it’s there that the designer goes to recharge and watch his Quarter Horses congregate at feeding time at the beginning of each day. “I love seeing them,” he says. “They all gather around the fence.”

“The Dressage Chronicles II: A Matter of Feel”

e e h T rn e h ut

Anne Rivers Siddons transports us to a place in the South Carolina lowlands untouched by time. Here exists Dayclear, a small village on land belonging to the family of Siddons’ protagonist Caroline “Caro” Venable. The Gullah inhabitants still heat with wood stoves, and televisions and cars are a rare sight in the one-street community. When Caro realizes the community is in danger of being engulfed by the menace of a theme park development being built by none other than her husband, she knows she has to make a stand. She feels a responsibility to stop the development to preserve the Gullah way of life and also the ecosystem of the surrounding marshland. Here’s where horses make an appear-

Karen McGoldrick’s vivid odyssey through the upper ranks of American dressage continues with “The Dressage Chronicles II: A Matter of Feel.” Her protagonist, working student Lizzy, travels with her employers to their Equus Paradiso summer training center in New Jersey. Once she arrives, it’s back to the show ring where McGoldrick’s trainer character, Margot Fanning, continues to impress the judges with her classical prowess. Lizzy gives us a wonderful narrative from the sidelines as we see the impeccably maintained tack, lush showgrounds and farms and glossy warmbloods through her eyes. This time around, Lizzy’s struggles involve a big-for-her-britches Young Rider and a rival trainer who has his eye on Margot’s irascible but brilliantly talented ride, Wild Child. Once again, McGoldrick does a mas-

terful job of integrating real-life descriptions of dressage into Lizzy’s story. It’s clear she’s drawn from her own experience as a trainer - the Southeast gets to claim her as she rides and writes on her own farm in Alpharetta, Ga. As Lizzy struggles to learn the ins and outs of the walk pirouette, we find ourselves learning right along with her. One of Lizzy’s most pithy lessons comes from the operation’s resident young horse trainer, Deb, who allows Lizzy to ride her older mare, Regina, a veteran dressage horse. “Feel how the shoulders always have to stay in front of that inside hind, just a smidge,” Deb explains. “You gotta’ always feel that in every pirouette, every half-pass. Lose that and you are so screwed. That’s what makes the bend. That’s what makes the balance. That’s how you load the bending joints of the hind leg. That’s engagement, Lizzy. That’s dressage.” It’s passages like these that make McGoldrick the sport’s literary ambassador; she’s able to integrate the nuts and bolts into her narrative in a believable way. If you haven’t read McGoldrick's original “The Dressage Chronicles,” do yourself a favor and pick it up first so you’ll be up to

“Low Country”

Anne Rivers Siddons Harper Torch ance: South Carolina’s marsh tackies, descendants of the Spanish barbs that long ago swam from shipwrecks to American shores, still inhabit the lowlands. When Caro retreats to her family’s home place in the marshes, she reacquaints herself with a wild dun mare she’s seen in the past. This time, the mare shows up with a tiny foal at her side. The duo makes repeat appearances in the story, ultimately working as a tie between Caro’s past and present. If you’re unfamiliar with marsh tackies, “Lowcountry” is a good introduction. Siddon’s language and descriptions are vivid and magnetic, whether she’s portraying the ponies moving through the fog or a home-cooked meal in the Gullah village. The story becomes a real page turner as Caro peels back the layers of the Gullah’s plight in the face of development and the fragility of the lowlands and the marsh tackies. “The Secret of Blackwatch”

e l e Th sy ta a t n

By Amber Cavalier Spiler BookLogix

When Maggie Thompson’s dad decides to buy her a pony, it opens up a whole new world of possibilities. Still reeling from the pain of her mother’s death, Maggie finds herself able to start rebuilding her life as her riding instructor, Ms. Cavalieri, and fellow students become more and more a part of her daily routine. Maggie soon begins to realize there’s something unusual about Blackwatch Stables. Ms. Cavalieri seems to know a little too much about what the ponies are thinking, and offhand remarks from the other girls lead her to believe they might be hiding something. As the story winds on, we see Maggie’s riding skills develop, and her bond deepen with Bella, a pony she rescued at a run-down sale. When Bella goes missing one day during a trail ride, Maggie knows her hunch about Blackwatch Stables is correct, based on the riders’ reactions to the strange flying creatures that snatched Bella. Maggie’s friends go above and beyond in their attempts to help Maggie locate the pony. This is the first effort from Atlanta, Ga., author Amber Spiler, and she pens a wonderful portrayal of a well-kept stable and a comprehensive youth riding program. Although the novel is geared toward youth, adult riders will also find her descriptions of matching trunks and immaculate stalls pleasing. Readers who are hooked after the first book needn’t worry - they can immediately begin the series’ second installment, “The Secret of the New Rider,” and Spiler has a third book on the way.

“Katy Had a Little Farm”

By Katy Rogers

Katy Rogers gives us a glimpse into life on her Waycross, Ga., farm at katyhadalittlefarm.com - gardening, clean eating, food politics and - naturally - riding. Her writing is well-supported and often inspiring. Sometimes it’s comforting; a recent post titled, “To All of Us Who Don’t Ride as Much as We ‘Should,’” assures us that it’s OK to make time for horses in whatever ways we can in various stages of our lives. “I’ve gotten to the point that laying on my mare while she eats counts. (And she smells better than No. 5 could ever smell,)” Rogers confesses. She touches on the often unspoken concern that plagues all dedicated horse owners who feel like work, family and other things constantly land before riding on their daily checklists. And she gently lets us off the hook, reminding us that the love of horsemanship itself is not a contest: “I’m giving you permission, if you want it, to do this stage of your horse life however you can and not feel guilty about it because you aren’t letting go.” she writes. “This life isn’t about sport. If horses are a business move or calculated strategy for you, you aren’t a horse person. You are a business person, which is fine but best kept in that world, not in the realm of living, sentient souls.” This blog is a lovely little escape and sometimes a supplement to daily life. If you visit for the horsey references, stay for the advice on how to identify “real” food, how to put better utilize your garden space and how to recognize government involvement in food production. From the vet ...

Canker versus thrush … the signs to watch for and what to do about both I recently treated an equine canker case, and it occurred to me that a lot of horse owners might not be able to recognize this painful infection that affects the hoof. It can show up in the frog, heel and underlying hoof structures. We haven’t completely isolated the organism that causes canker, but we do know warm and muddy conditions contribute to its prevalence just the kind of conditions common in the Southeast. Lucky us. Here’s the basic distinguishing factor for canker: it causes overgrowths. Early-stage canker has a doppelganger in thrush but this affliction actually destroys hoof tissue. Canker-infected horses may try to keep weight off the entire affected hoof or at least the heel. Worst case scenario: you’re looking at internal damage to the hoof structures on top of the external damage that’s visible. The good news: canker is far less common than thrush. The bad news: it’s much harder to treat - it involves resecting the infected portions of the hoof. An antiseptic cleaning regimen is the essential follow up, and sometimes antibiotics are even necessary. So which equines are most susceptible to canker? Well, the easy answer is all of them: it can affect all age groups, from foals to older horses. Sometimes canker isn’t caught until it’s really taken hold in the hoof. At this point, you’re looking for cauliflower-like growths mounded at the back portion of the frog with (there’s

just not a pleasant way to put this) puss-like excretions. If you find said conditions when picking your horse’s hooves, you’re probably apt to scream, drop the foot and hotfoot it to the phone to call your vet. Good move.

Dr. Dan Carter is one of only five veterinarians in the U.S. who is also an AFA certified journeyman farrier. Dr. Carter owns and operates Countryside Veterinarian Services in Monticello and Covington, Ga. The Countryside offices are equipped to handle an array of procedures and surgeries beyond basic care for equines and small animals. See countrysidevets.com.

SIGNS OF THRUSH Smell - foul, rotten odor Discharge - black moisture where frog meets sole Sensitivity - pain in the frog when pressure is applied Lameness - look for this in serious cases.

THRUSH PREVENTION Clean – pick your horse’s hooves regularly, but take care not to damage the sulcus or frog so as not to create a point for bacterial entry. Exercise - adequate turnout time can suffice here, but

make sure your horse moves in order to keep circulation going in the hoof. Adequate blood supply is key to healthy hooves. Regular farrier care - Hire an experienced farrier for trims - regular hoof care is

the key to balanced, supportive hooves. Environmental conditions – If at all possible, keep your horses on clean, dry ground. Wet, dirty bedding and manure mixed with mud make for the perfect stage for thrush.

Photo; Jenna Thompson

Here’s how the treatment is probably going to go. The tissue of the frog will easily loosen and bleed when your vet starts to poke around on the hoof. Also, pay attention to the smell: infected tissue will emit a foul odor when resected. “OK so, what’s thrush?” you’re probably thinking at this point. Here’s what you need to know: it’s common and easy to spot - and smell. You’re looking for black bacteria with a tarlike consistency. Thrush is usually very treatable early on. However, as it invades the sole and vital structures, it can cause significant pain. So with both thrush and canker, you need to be aware of the odor coming from your horse’s hoof - if it’s foul, call your vet.

DAN CARTER CJF, DVM

Here I am working on a recent canker resection. Note how the infected area is located toward the back of the frog.

know so much about the little mare already. The author does a lovely job of introducing little clues throughout the novel that form a larger picture in the end. Let’s just say Spiler’s Blackwatch horses turn out to have abilities and characteristics beyond those of the garden-variety equine. Spiler says these developments reflect the mystic draw humans feel to equines in real life. “To me, it ‘s really about the magic horses bring to our lives,” she explained. “That was important to me because I grew up a horse girl.”

How Blackwatch began Her childhood love of equines, mixed with her rapt attention to her father’s fanciful stories, sparked Spiler’s desire to write the Blackwatch series. She had a white pony as a child growing up on an Ocala, Fla., farm, and her father often constructed stories about the pony sprouting wings and flying. These tales stuck with Spiler who repeated them to her daughters later on. The stories began to take on a life of their own as Spiler inserted her own embellishments, and a few years ago, she and her daughters got into the

habit of writing together every Friday morning at a Chick-fil-A near their home in Hoschton, Ga. “The Secrets of Blackwatch” was published in 2014 with a follow up last year called “The Secret of the New Rider.”
