Undergraduate Programs Successful careers in Studio Art, Graphic Design, and Art Education require each student to develop their own voice. Our carefully honed curriculum insures a transition from artistic skill development to independent creative work. A rigorous first-year Foundation Experience — focused on developing both technical proficiency and critical inquiry skills— leads to a structured sequence of studio courses that focuses on conceptual inventiveness and expression, in a medium or area of student choice. Course requirements include regular trips to New York City museums and galleries, MASS MoCA, Storm King Art Center, Dia:Beacon, and individual artist studios. The Senior Exhibition is the culmination of four years of concentrated effort and provides students the opportunity to showcase their independent work. The Esther Massry Gallery presents world-class art in an active learning environment, where students meet visiting artists, explore and research changing exhibitions, and participate in interdisciplinary events such as concerts or readings thematically linked to the exhibit. The visiting artist program presents working artists at all career levels, art critics, art historians, and writers who lecture, visit classes, and offer student critiques.
Almost 100% of our graphic design graduates achieve full employment in their field within one year of graduation.

Study Abroad A variety of study abroad options are available each year. Students can take a full semester abroad, participate in two-week summer study tours, and/or select art history/studio combinations that include on-campus study and trips abroad during spring break. Favorite destinations include Florence, London, Paris and China.
Graduate Programs Candidates for the Studio Art degree pursue an intensive two-year studio practice focused on producing a mature body of work, while the graduate Art Education degree program — unique among New York state art education programs — puts the research emphasis on studio practice. The program creates accomplished artist-teachers who excel in sharing their knowledge with K-12 children in a classroom setting. Saint Rose art students have pursued graduate study at: Rhode Island School of Design, Rochester Institute of Technology, School of Visual Arts, Stanford University, Tyler School of Art of Temple University and Virginia Commonwealth University.
All Saint Rose art programs are accredited by NASAD (National Association of Schools of Art and Design), a sign of high learning standards and integrity shared by fewer than 30 percent of the nation’s art programs.
Faculty Faculty are invested in the pursuit of professional excellence. Exhibiting nationally and internationally, studio faculty enjoy successful careers in both fine art and design. Art history and art education faculty are published scholars in their respective fields. Our faculty members are recipients of notable awards and have distinguished themselves in a wide range of disciplines.
Internships and Field Experiences Graphic Design majors participate in an integrated internship experience with top-notch industries across the U.S., including ESPN, MTV Networks, Milton Glaser, Inc., Pentagram, and Walter Bernard Design. Internships build professional portfolios and networks and frequently result in full-time employment opportunities for our graduates. Studio Art majors gain hands-on experience with area sculptors, painters, and photographers; and have completed museum internships at the Albany Institute of History and Art, New York State Museum, the Guggenheim Museum, Albany Center Gallery, and The Arts Center of the Capital Region. These internships provide studio majors with practical experience, professional mentors, and networking opportunities within the professional world of art. Prior to the final semester of 500 hours of student teaching at elementary and secondary levels, Art Education majors spend over 100 hours with K-12 students in school observations, after-school programs in high-needs areas, and lab teaching in art at one grade level for a full semester. Graduate students spend one summer researching, designing curriculum, and working directly with stu-

dents in a College-run summer art camp. These experiences provide Art Education majors with invaluable opportunities to prepare an outstanding teaching portfolio.
Remarkable Outcomes Graphic Design graduates have gone on to stellar careers at some of the world’s leading ad agencies, MTV, Polo Ralph Lauren, The New York Times, and Hallmark. Alumni of the Studio Art program have distinguished themselves on the regional and national art stage and have served as artistsin-residence, college professors, museum curators, exhibit jurors, community art center directors, artist’s apprentices, commercial photographers, and a wide range of other creative careers. After earning their Initial and Professional certifications, Art Education graduates pursue successful teaching careers at all levels in New York state and across the nation. They are in the forefront of leadership in local schools and professional education associations. In addition to teaching, many exhibit regularly as practicing artists.

THE CENTER FOR ART AND DESIGN (PICOTTE HALL) We consider our studio facilities among the best of any liberal arts college in the Northeast. Classroom spaces are large, clean, brightly lit, and wellequipped for multiple functions. Art History is taught in the Massry Center for the Arts near the Esther Massry Gallery, facilitating the use of the art gallery as an extension of the classroom. Art Education is equipped with a computer lab that provides the hardware and software needed to design learning materials and to practice presentation skills, plus a Smartboard-equipped classroom — a functional “handson” space for teaching projects. Drawing and Painting are held in four spacious studios. Individual workspaces, a hallmark of our program, are provided to students in all sophomore, advanced, and graduate classes. Sculpture is taught in two large studio spaces with abundant natural light. The main studio is equipped with an extensive inventory of woodworking equipment, with additional dedicated spaces for metalworking, clay and plaster. In addition, all advanced and graduate sculpture students have individual studios. Graphic Design is taught in computer labs, smart classrooms, and conference and production rooms. The computer labs are equipped with iMacs with Adobe Creative Suite software and color printers with largescale capacity for all print and Web work. Printmaking provides the perfect environment for creating multiple images or monoprints in screen-printing, etching, and relief printing modes. One of the largest studios in New York, it includes two etching presses, a darkroom utilized for screen printing, a small computer lab for planning and clean work, and individual studio spaces for three different courses. Photography includes three darkroom spaces, a print finishing room, and a digital photography studio. Computer labs are available for students working at the intermediate, advanced and graduate levels. Large-scale photo printing is available on-site. A variety of traditional and alternative photography methods and media can be explored singly or in combination with each other, and integrated with other studio media.
