Undergraduate Programs Rigorous classes and continual field work equip Saint Rose students to become teachers at any level of education, including: Early Childhood (birth – grade 2): Course topics range from language development to testing and assessment to literacy for young children. Childhood (grades 1 – 6): The coursework prepares students for the curriculum and instruction in a variety of subjects and are immersed in the latest research in educational psychology, child development, problem-based learning and considerably more. Adolescence (grades 7–12): Students learn to lead their classrooms, create new initiatives and become responsible agents of change — while preparing to teach biology, chemistry, Earth science, English, mathematics, social studies, or Spanish in middle and high school. Dual certification options allow students to be eligible for certification in both general education and special education for one of the instruction levels by the end of their program. Students can also add a bilingual extension in Spanish to any teaching certification program.

Graduate Programs Each graduate degree program provides the coursework required for earning either initial or professional teaching certification in New York and reciprocal states. Like the College’s undergraduate programs, a wealth of options — any instructional level, dual certification, certification extension to other grade levels and subjects, etc. — enables students to earn the necessary teaching credentials no matter what their starting point, or where they want to teach.
Faculty Together, the department’s faculty members have spent decades in classrooms at every educational level. Nearly all have earned their doctoral degrees; many have both lasting connections with regional schools and extensive networks of professional relationships in the United States and around the world.
Clinically Rich Programs Throughout their time at Saint Rose, students have the opportunity to practice their new skills as they complete their course-embedded field work, engage in authentic instructional and assessment activities and reflect on their emerging professional practice. As a result, students enter their culminating field experiences — and the job market — poised for successful collaboration with professional teachers.

Remarkable Outcomes Saint Rose education graduates pass the New York State Teacher Certification Examinations at an average rate of 96%. From there, they go on to innumerable classroom and leadership positions throughout New York and beyond by becoming school principals, heading literacy coalitions, leading curriculum development for state departments of education as well as for global learning organizations, and even serving in the State Legislature. Graduates from the last three years have landed positions across New York State as well as in Massachusetts, North Carolina, Virginia, and many other locations with one recent graduate named the 2013 Hawaii Teacher of Promise. Others have gone on to teach English in China, Japan and the Middle East.
