The Program The interdisciplinary curriculum includes courses in school psychology, educational psychology, counseling, and special education. The emphasis is on real-world experience and providing students with diverse opportunities to gain practical clinical experience. The faculty members bring years of experience to the classroom in professional practice and organizational involvement at the state, national, and international levels. Through hands-on coursework, case studies, and direct experiences, students learn to think critically, optimistically, and passionately about what they will bring to the children, families, and communities they serve. Each graduate will be fully prepared to address psychological factors that impact learning and behavior within the school context, help children develop and learn to their fullest potential, work collaboratively with parents and teachers to support children’s school experiences, promote appreciation and support for human diversity, and change school practices and policies to help children overcome impediments to achievement.

The School Psychology program is fully approved by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP). The program entails three years of full-time study with a full-time internship during the final year. Students are admitted in the fall semester with a cohort of classmates who will complete the program together, taking most courses in the spring and fall, with some requirements during the summer. At the completion of the 69-credit program, students will earn a Master of Science in Education (M.S.Ed.) as well as a Certificate of Advanced Study in School Psychology.
Faculty The College’s full-time school psychology faculty has been working happily together since 2004 and continues to work in clinical and/or educational settings, which allows them to bring real-world experiences and success into the classroom. They regularly present at conferences at the state, national, and international level. Their shared approach is to merge systems-level thinking and a dynamic understanding of personality development, which guides in case formulation, decision making, and intervention design. There is great emphasis on child and family strengths, resiliency, and cultural context.
Practicum and Internship The program offers students a unique practicum and internship experience. With student input and goals in mind, the professors match students with one of the many school-based field sites with which the Thelma P. Lally School of Education has cultivated longterm, strong, positive relationships. This matching process allows students to know that they are entering a high-quality learning environment that encourages their growth as professionals. Both the practicum and internship site are the same, so students really get to know the school district and the educators with whom they will be collaborating. During the 1,200-hour internship, students receive well-rounded experiences within both the primary and secondary settings.
Remarkable Outcomes A majority of the Saint Rose School Psychology graduates find employment as school psychologists within the public schools. There are many who work in other types of settings including school-based health and mental health centers, residential facilities, and community-based treatment centers. They also work across New York and the U.S. Alumni of the program also support current students by providing advice, guidance, and information about their careers.

EXTRACURRICULARS The School Psychology Association was the first graduate student-run organization on the Saint Rose campus. Its members plan out events to encourage camaraderie amongst the College’s students. They work closely with the local chapter of the New York Association of School Psychologists (NYASP) organization to bring in educational experts to present on the Saint Rose campus. They also raise monies for a variety of charities and advocate for financial support for the program’s students who are attending state or national conferences.
