Undergraduate Programs Biology: Areas of focus in cell and molecular biology (for careers in medicine, genetics, animal biology, and other fields) or ecology and evolutionary biology (for careers in environmental science and natural resource management). Biochemistry: Explore proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, and other chemicals that spark biological processes. Topics include the regulation of metabolism and the methods by which drugs affect organisms. Geology: Curriculum focuses on the complexities of earth’s resources, the global climate, natural hazards, and the environment. The program helps graduates qualify for positions in oil and mining, environmental consulting, parks, and other fields. Chemistry: Investigates the subtleties of organic and inorganic chemistry in preparation for careers as doctors, lab technicians, and research scientists, among others. Education: Courses prepare future teachers to teach middle or high school level biology, chemistry, or earth science. Pre-Med: Students interested in careers in medicine, dentistry, or veterinary medicine are strongly encouraged to complete a degree in biology, biochemistry or chemistry. The College’s Pre-Med Committee helps prepare students for their applications to medical school and other doctoral programs.

Programs in partnership with other universities: Occupational Therapy (4+2): B.S. from Saint Rose & M.S. in O.T. from the Sage Colleges
Physical Therapy (4+3) B.S. from Saint Rose & Clinical Doctorate from the Sage Colleges
Medical Technology (3+2) or (3+1) B.S. from Saint Rose and a master’s degree from Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (3+2) in Clinical Laboratory Sciences or B.S. from Saint Rose and one year of clinical affiliation with Rochester General Hospital or New York Methodist Hospital (3+1). Both programs enable students to be eligible for professional certification as medical technologists.
Biology/Cytotechnology (3+2) B.S. degree from Saint Rose and an M.S. in Biotechnology-Cytotechnology from Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. This program also meets the requirements for licensure as a cytotechnologist in the State of New York and national board registry.
Graduate Programs The master’s degree in Adolescence Education (with a concentration in Biology, Chemistry, or Earth Science) enables students to earn their initial teaching certification in these subjects in grades 7–12. Students may also earn their master’s in Adolescence Education/Special Education (with a concentration in Biology, Chemistry, or Earth Science) so they will be certified to teach in inclusive classroom settings.
Faculty One faculty member has a grant to study the health of local watersheds, while another is an international consultant in oil exploration. Another conducts research on the effects of pesticides on the reproductive systems of exposed fish. Still others are conducting research on topics such as fetal alcohol syndrome, immunology and food safety, ancient volcanic deposits in South Africa, and what the glaciers in the Andes can teach us about global climate change.
Undergraduate and Graduate Research All students are encouraged to conduct independent research alongside faculty mentors, which can be a deciding factor in medical, dental, or veterinary school acceptances. Students that have taken advantage of these opportunities always report back that they are some of the best-prepared students in their doctoral programs and ready for the rigor of advanced research.
Internships and Field Experiences Renowned for its scientific and healthcare communities — Albany provides multiple opportunities for internships in the sciences. Interns regularly work at Albany Medical Center, New York State Department of Health, New York State Food Safety Labs, and the Albany Pine Bush Preserve. Adolescence Education majors at the undergraduate and graduate levels in chemistry, biology, or earth science take courses in teacher preparation, culminating in a semester of supervised student teaching at both the middle and high school levels.
Remarkable Outcomes Science alumni from Saint Rose have made an impact not just in the sciences but well beyond. They include a board-certified otolaryngologist, the owner of three medical practices, a conservation scientist with the National Gallery of Art, a U.S. District Court chief judge, the CFO of Mercyhurst University, and a champion of human rights with 16 books to her credit. In just the last two graduating classes, students are earning their doctorates or master’s degrees at the Roswell Park Memorial Cancer Institute, Albany Medical College, Union College, Clarkson, Notre Dame, Colorado State University, the University at Albany, Tufts University School of Dentistry, and the University of Buffalo completing their Doctorate in Physical Therapy, Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine, Doctor of Medicine or master’s degree to become certified Physician’s Assistants. Still other students received immediate employment as geologists while others as laboratory research assistants at companies like Regeneron, Inc., and in clinical settings like Albany Medical Center.
