13th Annual Scholar Recognition Event Thursday May 19, 2022

A Message from the Co-Presidents Dear Friends, Congratulations! What an honor to be named a CWCF Scholarship recipient. Clearly you are all hardworking, determined individuals and should be very proud of this accomplishment. We only wish we had the opportunity to celebrate with you in person, but we’ve all had to pivot these last couple of years. While we are saddened by the fact we didn’t get to meet you and your family in person, all that truly matters is that you and yours are safe and healthy. We wish you much continued success and happiness in all you do.

Ted Miller Co-President, CWCF Board

Marissa Weidner Co-President, CWCF Board

About Ted Miller: Education has played such an important role in my life that it makes it difficult for me to contain my passion about it, and I am so proud to be Co-President of the CWCF Board. My parents grew up in the Great Depression, and they were the first in their families to graduate from college. My mom earned her Ph.D. and was a college professor at a time when that was almost unheard of. My dad, who sold newspapers on the street corner at age five, went on to become a Patent Attorney and Vice President of a large corporation after earning multiple degrees from prestigious institutions. Clearly, education totally changed both their circumstances and life paths, and in turn, did the same for those of myself and my sister, and then subsequently for our own children... the reverberation is limitless. Education inherently has a wonderful and profound multigenerational effect; our students, who are harnessing the power of education in order to improve their own lives—some of whom are the first in their own families to attend college – are indeed doing the same for generations to come. About Marissa Weidner: For me, my role as Co-President of the CWCF Board is extremely personal. I am thrilled to be in a position to support the amazing students of CW. I know how bright their future is as I am an alum and my career has far exceeded any expectation I had prior to attending the school! As a student, I learned what was possible, I was enabled to succeed, and the direction of my life was forever changed. For these reasons, I value the opportunity to stay involved, to help students realize their potential and I feel privileged to represent not only the CWCF Board but also the amazing students that are so deserving of your scholarship dollars. These students have the drive to succeed and your support is invaluable to them! So, congratulations to all of our deserving scholars! We wish them much continued success and happiness.

Doris Metzger Miller Datakey Scholarship The 2022 recipient of the Doris Metzger Miller Datakey Scholarship is Sindya Laroche. Sindya is pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration in Health Services Administration.

Sindya Laroche In Loving Memory

Doris Metzger Miller

“Like everything else in life, making the decision to take steps to a better life is always a hard one. Making that decision at 41 years old is even harder. I often worry about how I can keep up, but being a single mom of a now 17-year-old that I am pushing to go to school and get his degree will allow me to show my son with hard work and the mentality, doors will open and things will work out even if you can’t see how it will do so.”

Datakey Consulting, founded by Ted Miller in 2004, recently established this scholarship in honor of Ted Miller’s mom, Doris Metzger Miller. Doris was a remarkable, colorful, and extremely bright woman who grew up quite poor during the Great Depression in Rochester, NY. With her passing, Ted has had many moments of reflection and gratitude for the strong foundation she has given him. Ted feels her greatest contribution as an individual was her encouragement of others, especially women, to believe in themselves enough to further their pursuits in education. Doris had an insatiable desire to learn and she continued to learn well after achieving her Ph.D. She was a college professor, a published researcher, and an instructional designer. When Ted opened his company in 2004, she was instrumental in creating the company name, DataKey. She firmly believed individuals should have the freedom to exercise their intellectual curiosity. Ted believes that it is because of his mother that education has played a key role in his life. The right recipient for this award should possess the same passion for learning, education and growth.

Alumni Scholarship The 2022 recipient of the Alumni Scholarship is Nicole Filder. Nicole is pursuing a Bachelor in Business Administration. “As a returning adult learner in CW’s adult program, I am growing and networking with so many brilliant people. This growth will ultimately lead me to accomplish two very important goals: 1) graduate with my BBA in Business Administration, and 2) obtain a managerial role with my current employer. I know that investing in my education will make me a better, smarter and more confident person; one that will make a difference in this world and bring value to anything I touch.”

Nicole Filder

The Alumni Association Scholarship was created by one of the college’s Alum who wanted a way to pay it forward and help current students of The College of Westchester realize their dreams of obtaining a college education. This scholarship is awarded every year to a current student with at least 15 credits and a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA. In addition to strong academic accomplishments, scholarship recipients are selected based on involvement in leadership and community service activities, and demonstrated financial need.

This award was created in 2009 to honor friend to CW, former Mayor Joseph Delfino for his fine work and tremendous support of the college. Education for today’s youth has always been a passion of Mayor Delfino’s: “I am all about the kids, about education, taking care of the younger members of our community.” Since CW and former Mayor Delfino have a long, collaborative relationship that goes back more than 30 years, it seemed fitting that an award be created in his honor and is granted annually. The successful recipient must be a White Plains High School student currently attending CW, and most importantly, they must embody Mayor Joe’s spirit of giving.

Jeanne Sutkowski

“If you told me two years ago I would be back in school, I wouldn’t have believed you. When I spoke to my aunt about going back to school, my biggest concern was the financial aspect. However, I’m glad it didn’t derail me. This scholarship will push me more to finish, and I will be able to show my kids that anything is possible. Showing my children it’s never too late will be my biggest accomplishment.”

The College of Westchester Charitable Foundation Board established the Jeanne Sutkowski Scholarship in loving memory of a caring, devoted and hard-working wife and mother who cared for all around her. Jeanne was the wife of CW Chairman Emeritus Ernest H. Sutkowski and mother to President & CEO, Mary Beth Del Balzo; Vice President of Marketing and Media Resources, Nancy Trim and Vice Chair of the CW Board, Karen Smith. Jeanne was also mother to Joe Sutkowski and Jennifer Sutkowski. This scholarship will be awarded on an annual basis to an individual who aspires to work in the health care industry and possesses the same compassion for others as Jeanne did. Special thanks to Jeanne Sutkowski’s family and friends for making this scholarship possible.

Congratulations to the CWCF Scholars and Honorees Best Wishes for Continued Success The 2022 CWCF Scholars, and Honorees alike, are inspirational to all who are connected to the CWCF! They serve as examples of achievement and success. We are honored to support you and this event on behalf of Catie’s Cause, a 501c3 public charity that was founded by the parents of Catie Smith. Catie is a CW Graduate. Sadly, Catie lost her life at 20 years old in December of 2020 due to sustained use of Extra Strength Tylenol and its active ingredient, acetaminophen. Catie went into acute liver failure and was unable to receive a liver transplant as her body failed just hours after being placed on the top of the transplant list. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, acetaminophen toxicity is the 2nd most common cause of liver transplantation worldwide, and the most common cause of liver transplantation in the US and UK. It leads to 113,000 calls to poison control centers each year, 56,000 emergency room visits, thousands of hospitalizations, and hundreds of deaths. https://www.catiescause.org For Acetaminophen Safety Tips and Wellness Initiatives

Radford Quesada Networking Scholarship The 2022 recipient of the Radford Quesada Networking Scholarship is Ralph Cesar. Ralph is pursuing an Associate of Applied Science in Computer Network Administration. “I made a promise to myself; I promised myself to make my family proud. On September 13, 2021, I stepped into the world of computer “IT” Information Technology at the College of Westchester because I want to become a coder and a computer technician, but mostly because I want to help them (my family). They were committed early on in my life to doing everything in their power to instill in me a love of learning and an understanding of the importance of hard work and dedication, so I want to return the favor.”

The College of Westchester Charitable Foundation established this scholarship to honor the memory of Radford Quesada who was part of the CW family from 2008 until his untimely passing in 2015. He was a dedicated employee and a wonderful person who always had a smile on his face and a story to tell. As Junior Network Administrator, he interacted with all staff, faculty, administration and students, and he always exemplified The CW Way in everything he did. His genuine personality inspired everyone that we do have time to just be people, to treat each other with kindness, to take a breath and enjoy life. Since he had such a positive impact on all he met during his service to CW, it was only fitting that a scholarship be named after him. The recipient for this award should possess the same passion for life, happiness and success.

My first thoughts were to say no, close the door to my education and find another passion that does not involve putting myself in debt. However, pursuing a career in the medical field has been one of my dreams since I was 12 years old, and I was not going to let the lack of money stop me from accomplishing my goals. Receiving a scholarship could make my college experience, one of the best experiences I have ever had. I will not be only involved with getting my education, but I will be giving myself the chance to create memories, meet new people and even finding a new passion.”

My life has had a ton of adversity in it and with this adversity I have gained a ton of experience. Most importantly, I have learned to put my dreams and myself first, no matter what anyone says. In my heart and my mind, I know what this woman should be and that is to be a woman that graduates CW and pursues all her dreams. Hopefully, my mother will understand why I chose this path, as I aim to alter how women within my culture are viewed. I also hope that my actions inspire others.”

As a child of immigrant parents, I learned to take responsibilities for my family and myself at a very young age. My family, success and leaving a legacy rank among the three most important things in my life. Due to my past, I keep these three vital factors in mind every single day to help myself succeed.”
