MEET THE Artist: Walker Philip

PRESIDENT OF THE DIGITAL MEDIA CLUB When and how did you first become interested in art? I got interested in art when I was merely 5 years old. My inspirations came from watching cartoon shows like Blue’s Clues and Batman: The Animated Series. Where do you think your creativity comes from? My creativity comes from the cartoon shows I watched throughout my life. My art style reflects various styles of my favorite cartoons. What are you working on currently that excites you? What I am currently working on is improving my art style digitally using a drawing tablet. What artist would you say influences your work the most? I never really had a favorite artist that influences my work because my art style is mixed with various combinations that is hard to tell personally. How has CW contributed towards your artistic talent? CW was responsible for allowing me to explore the wonders of digital media and how I can use the technology available to enhance my art style. Which Digital Media professor has influenced your art the most? I would say Professor James Lines. What is your dream project? My dream project is to create a well-developed animated cartoon story. How do you see yourself in the future? I see myself working for a company in digital illustration before moving on to developing my own business in the field.

STUDENTS TRAVEL TO ALBANY More than 70 students, faculty, and administrators from New York’s degree-granting proprietary colleges visited Albany lobbying for Tuition Assistance Program (TAP). Our CW delegates were part of a group representing New York’s Association of Proprietary Colleges (APC), easily identified by their blue and white scarves.

Here’s what students had to say about this unique experience:

“Being given the opportunity to go to Albany to lobby for TAP was an amazing experience. We go to share our personal stories with the Assemblymen and let them know how much a grant like that means to students who attend private college. The best thing about TAP grants is that it is free money awarded from the government. Personally, I had a great time and can appreciate these grants that much more knowing that I will not be receiving one for my master’s program.” ~Jennifer “It was such an amazing experience being able to go to Albany to speak to our New York State lawmakers. We were able to speak to the legislators about the importance and impact change the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) has had on us. I’m happy we were able to get our voice out for every person trying to get a college education.” ~Courtney

ONE SENTENCE STORY CONTEST

WINNERS ANNOUNCED!

The Winter semester’s one-sentence stories were a heavy lot, weighty topics posed in poignant form. Our winners represent some of the heaviest, dealing with anger, imprisonment and societal strife. These stories are a call to change, a focus on wrongs in need of address, awareness calling for solutions. The Writing Lab is therefore very pleased to announce the Winter 2017 One-Sentence Story contest winners:

3rd place: “There it is,” the teacher said, “blackboard, white chalk; segregation at its finest.” – Charleydith Ferrer

2nd place: After many years hidden-away in solitary confinement, the bugs ate a little hole in the roof; Bob saw it as a window of opportunity. – James Agyeman

1st place: Little Ana bowed her head every night and thanked God for killing her father. – Dierdre-Rose Raggo

Courtney is looking forward to an exciting summer experience, “I feel so grateful to get the chance to go to the University of Pittsburg and hopefully make a positive change to my future and anyone else that can be helped in the process while I work on my research with my team. I look forward to undertake this experience and make the best out of it!” The i3 program prepares students for the rigors of graduate study and serves as a pipeline for i3 Scholars into internationally recognized information schools – the iSchools. Students represent CW at Clemson Institute for the Study of Capitalism Congratulations to students Jennifer Mitchell and Malcolm Bennett as they were accepted to participate at The Clemson Institute for the Study of Capitalism. This is America’s first and only University-based teaching and research center dedicated to exploring the moral foundations of capitalism. Jennifer and Malcom will join students from other states in the US, as well as international students and spend time with professors, activists, and other experts on liberty to study the foundations of a free society. Attendees walk away with a better understanding of what capitalism and morality are and how to effectively fight for them. We look forward to hearing more from Jennifer and Malcolm in the Student Voices’ summer edition. We’re sure the experience will be very productive. The Clemson Institute for the Study of Capitalism holds its annual conference for undergraduate and graduate students at Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina. This conference is co-sponsored by the Foundation for Economic Education. The institute accepts students, age 18-24, who are new to economics and the freedom philosophy and are interested in learning more about the world around them. 12

MEET THE Artist: Jenique jolly

When and how did you first become interested in art? I’m not exactly sure when I got interested in art, probably around 1st grade. I remember making little comics of my characters going on adventures. I also was a major Sonic Fan girl. Where do you think your creativity comes from? I draw inspiration from the artists and music around me. When I see incredible art, it drives me to create. When I listen to fun music, it gets my creativity flowing. What artist would you say influences your work the most? It would have to be Kylee Henke. She is not the most famous artist, but she is very well known online. I’ve been following her since I was young and strive to create and be as successful as her. Kylee’s improvements in her amazing art and animation helped me to keep creating. How has CW contributed towards your artistic talent? This has been my first semester and I’ve learned quite a bit. CW helped strengthen my art foundations and become more structured in my work. They have also helped me relearn things that I thought I already mastered. Where does an artist hangout? At their desk. The computer is my best friend. What type of art are you attracted to? I love cartoons! If it’s simple enough to animate then I’m okay with it. How do you see yourself in the future? I definitely see myself achieving my goals of creating a complete graphic novel and starting my very own animation studio in my hometown. I see myself having a ton of internships under my belt and a amazing resume to impress any studio I apply too.
