ast November 20, 2021, Imus Institute of Science and Technology (IIST) students and the faculty of Hospitality & Tourism attended the webinar: Sustainable Tourism/Tourism Planning & Development in the New Normal via Zoom. The guest speaker was Ms. Sheila Marie Evano, Hospitality Development, Planning, and Management Strategist; Sales and Marketing Management Professional; Resort, Spa, and Wellness Industry. She discussed how they operate and the environmental protection of Hotels in El Nido Palawan. Also included are how some issues can fix, most simply. They have also carried out projects, one of which is coastal cleanup, which aims to separate waste and collect plastic bottles called the “ALTA WASTE program” that can be sold for recycling and can be used to improve facilities and maintain the area. Ms. Sheila Marie Evano also stated, “We should plant trees because it helps to improve air quality and also, trees are flood control solutions. There is hope for planting!” On the other hand, the Philippines Department of Tourism (DOT), in the new normal, assures the public that hotels will follow the protocols and precautions set by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Department of Health (DOH).

The project was launched by the Rotary International Club last year to focus on environmental care and protection. They said that one of the inspirations in developing their activity are disasters such as the passing of storms that often affect and destroy nature. Also, according to the President of Rotaract Club IIST, Allen Dela Cruz, “The goal of this project is not just about

planting but also growing because it is not enough that you just plant when you plant you should take care of it until it grows and its roots are established.” It has not been easy for them, especially with the pandemic. But with the help, cooperation, and effort of each member, it eventually became successful. They also added that they made sure they followed the health protocols against COVID-19

PANANAW

Anna Therese Dapiton

If you have decided to pursue another course, it doesn’t make you less of a person. Nagshift ka nang maaga? That’s okay.

I remember when I was in highschool, sobrang linaw na sa akin ng pipiliin kong course, nai-imagine ko kung gaano kasaya sa work ko, yung tipong I will get paid dahil sa pirma ko? Yun ang definition ko ng success. But right after we finished our first semester, na-realize ko na parang hindi ako masaya? Don’t get me wrong, okay naman ako with my professors lalong lalo na with my classmates because most of them are my friends. I doubted myself because of that, I even imagined myself getting rejected by companies after they found out that I am a shiftee. Yes, I am a shiftee and I personally believe that that’s okay, it’s not even a crime. Their words lingered on my thoughts, sayang nga ba ang isang tulad ko na piniling lumipat ng course? According sa Target Jobs UK, there are students who consider changing or leaving their course because of several factors: pwedeng dahil sa maraming modules, it can be because of the university/college itself, yung academic challenges of studying at a college level, personal reasons, finances, or it can be because of the course itself.

Yes, our education plays a vital part for reaching our goals and getting our dream jobs, but let us remember that education is not enough for you to be successful. IF IT’S MEANT TO BE, IT WILL BE. By : Alyssa Bea Aficionado

“I am planning to take the board exam sana by October 2020. But I know prior [the announcement of] the postponement by the PRC that it will be canceled. Because pandemic made most of the things uncertain. So, I changed my plan, from starting my review to applying for a job. But I still believe in God’s perfect timing,” says Ricci Jan Mae Roca, a fresh graduate from the College of Accountancy. The virus made ordinary people’s plans canceled, plans to travel, plans to do something or go somewhere. But for a fresh grad, their future is what was canceled – their plans for their career and for the things that they may do for the rest of their lives. Even the privilege and joy of marching as a graduate was not given to this batch.

06

Imagine having to study for years and reap all the hard work and sleepless nights, all the struggles and the battles you fought for so long but not being able to do so because of a breakout. “Pagmamartsa na lang, pinagkait pa” says Roca. This statement is not to blame anyone; it’s just a sentence of agony, but what’s there to do than cope with whatever is offered, especially in these trying times. Five years of hard work and anticipating the day where you will finally have the chance to accept your diploma and move the tussle in your toga hat and shout aloud that you are now a graduate, your parents walking you and being proud of you, your friends crying because of memories and the end of an era, all this compressed and converted into one

slide. “Pero yun nga, I accepted na ganun talaga. And we should not be too much affected because what’s more important is, I still made it, with my desired degree.” Roca is still looking into the bright side of life even in this season. Seasons, plans, people, everything changes. Some changes suddenly, some are meant to change, some take time to change, and some changes aren’t even acknowledged. Plans of the fresh graduates may have been moved, but all those plans, hopes, and dreams will happen if those are bound to happen. Nothing can stop it from happening, and nothing can stop them from fulfilling all those dreams. Never lose hope, for if it’s meant to be, it will be.

Industries as well as small or large businesses are forced to stop their operation in order to avoid the escalated number of cases. Due of large number of closed businesses, many people hardly lost their jobs, income and profits in supporting their families especially the busy life of Caviteños, stop. Reducing the number of workers, work arrangements, and reduced working hours are the best options to avoid the risks of the pandemic. In addition, Labor Force placed 7.2 million of estimated 11.2 million population from a range of 15 years old and above; 66.9% means six hundred thirty-nine (639) in 1000 population was either employed or unemployed. The unemployment rate is recorded at 12.4% as it is recovered compared to the previous quarter rate, which was 16.7% as of July 2019. In the 1st Quarter (Jan-Mar), the unemployment rate is 7.7%; an increase of 10% for 2nd Quarter (Apr-Jun) estimated at 16.7% and for July a decrease of 4.3% as 12.4% of unemployment due of the pandemic. However, underemployment drastically increases than unemployment

because most of them are self-employed workers and part-time workers. Underemployment in the 1st Quarter (Jan-Mar) estimated of 11.6% then a rapid increase of underemployment peaks of 11.1% as a result of 23.7% and for July a decrease of 1.8% as an improvement under GCQ. As of July 2020, a total of 2,000 OFWs in Cavite that are registered go back to their families because of significant cases in different countries, increasing the jobless rate in Cavite. Consequently, the number of returnees increases weekly, as stated by Gov. Jonvic Remulla. Nevertheless, the New Mall Policy affect also the opportunity to do jobs for everyone because businesses reduced the number of employees because of a decrease in sales; therefore, it raises the number of unemployed workers in Cavite. Before the pandemic, the rate of unemployed, employed, and underemployed is high, but because of the crisis, a rapid increase in all divisions is visible and experienced by a lot of people not only in Cavite but also for the whole country and overseas. Even though there’s a high rate of unemployment in Cavite, it is seen that there’s an improvement because the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) propose 3,000 job openings amid Covid-19 as of March 15, 2020 up to now. Thus, Cavite still provides the best quality of offerings for workers for its development.

ere’s to a Lousy Christmas and a Crappy New Year! – F.R.I.E.N.D.S 1994 (Season 1 Ep. 9)

Who would have thought that this line could be so accurate years after the episode was produced? Well, unlike other natural disasters, the pandemic is a surprise for everyone. One thing is for sure; it is not easy to cope up with something unexpected. 2020 is a year of change and survival. With all the restrictions that have been mandated, how on earth can people stay sane and productive? Generally, people’s lives prepandemic are stabilized with activities that involve interaction with friends, co-workers, and so on. On the other hand, humans are known for having the ability to adapt. No matter how serious the situation is, they will always find a way to stay distracted and mentally healthy. Since most of us are staying at home, one of the hobbies firmly established this quarantine season is Binge Watching. According to Newsweek that F.R.I.E.N.D.S ranked 7th place as most-watched shows on Netflix for the year 2020. There’s no doubt that this happening will occur. Despite being aired

June-December 2020

in 1994, the show is still admired by the hearts of many because of its naturally relatable episodes. The episodes are not just the reason why viewers are attached to the American Television Sitcom. The characters are also given life by such talented actors and actresses and the relationships formed inside the scenes and behind the camera. If everyone is going to be so realistic, some of us are so into some shows, to the point they make us realize the things that truly matter, and that is to have contentment. Based on the 10 Seasons of F.R.I.E.N.D.S, the ideas mainly focus on our relationships, coping with life, and still striving on areas we want to succeed. Maybe that is one of the reasons why the sitcom is still viewed today because we want a kind of relationship that lasts, the constant connection, acceptance, and the unconditional love the characters continuously provide to one another. The pandemic year has been taking so much time when supposedly we can be celebrating our lives with the people we love, but since

we’re all here, why not make the most out of it and be thankful that these shows exist. It may be common for some, but being away from the persons we used to see is a different kind of heartache, and we can normalize the fact that we can find sanity by viewing a movie or even sitcoms. The pandemic might be a torn difficult to pull out. Still, it can be used as a living weapon where we learn from ourselves, from our realizations, and start a new beginning by applying it hypothetically. This only proves the idea that home is a beautiful place to stay in. It keeps you safe and teaches you how to love yourself and be courageous.

The hashtags such as #NoStudentLeftBehind #LigtasNaBalikEskwela #PisoParaSaEdukasyon trended online, as the students worried that they cannot afford to enroll this school year and the difficulties that this new normal of education can bring.

As everyone hoped for changed in decision regarding of the opening of classes and as much as unstoppable disaster, the decision of executives was unshakeable. On September 2020, despite of pandemic and crisis we are all in, numerous educational institutions in different part of our country opened and continued to give their best to provide a better quality of education. Including to this educational institution is Imus Institute of Science and Technology (IIST) were they used platform such as zoom, google classroom, google email and messenger to reach and communicate to their students. Those said platforms helped both teachers and students to exchange lectures and transmit their knowledge. It has been five (5) months since the classes begun. The students scream still echoing as their worries was already happening. The worries that they would have difficulty in new set up or they would not be able to learn anything. Therefore, aren’t you all wondering and curious on how students like ACES, cope up with this new normal of education? Let us find out what activity that are difficult or impossible to be done on online classes, what technique/s they do to solved it, how they keep up with the new set up and their pieces of advice. “Iyong mga lab [work] namen at coding na need namen ng guidance from our profs kase some

of us hindi magaling sa self-learning.” “To be honest, i-cope up kase kailangan makacope up ka kahit hindi mo gusto.

Campus Queen 2020: A real queen, a real conqueror! By Alyssa Bea W. Aficionado

A

queen is not someone who fears nothing. Instead, a queen is someone who defies the feeling of being frightened and still conquers. Would you believe that our Campus Queen 2020 was not as assertive as she looked? “At first, I was devoured by my fears and diffidence.” Said the queen, but along the way, she mastered the art of overcoming those fears and trouncing them away. Regardless of those worries, our queen still managed to win the Best in Talent award as she excellently grooved her way to the top. She looked regal in her long gown and like a real athlete in her sportswear. But the question and answer portion was her enormous breakthrough. For that very moment, she sounded the most confident. If you just saw how all the things she learned during the preparation for that night ( coronation night ) manifested in her answer, if you just heard how happy and self-assured she was that very moment, if you just knew how sure she was about herself, you will immediately know, like every person inside the IIST gymnasium, that she will be our Campus Queen 2020. People only see one night, the coronation. They don’t get to see how much struggle a candidate has to deal with, from coming out of their shells, comfort zone, and safe places, they don’t get to see how hard they try overcoming timidity, facing hundreds of people, showing themselves in a very different manner, people

don’t see that. All people see is the night where they all look spotless with full makeup on, wearing bright clothes, and smiling tirelessly. Our Campus Queen 2020 is one of those people who feared and had worries, but the fact that she overcame it all and ended successfully is what makes her a real queen. Our queen believes that anyone who desires to do something is able as long as they put their heart to it. “We all have our invisible crowns. We are all unique, and each of us serves a different purpose. I became the Campus Queen not only because I possess the characters that fit the said title but also because I am a Queen that has departed from my haven, a Queen that is confident of my skin, and most especially, a Queen that has a heart. For if I can do it, so can you.” Said GilleiJean C. Padriquez, 20, BSA-III. She’s got the looks, the brain, but most importantly, the heart and attitude of a queen. She was terrified, but the moment she believed in herself is her true crowning for then and only then, even before winning the title, she already embodied the spirit of a fearless queen. She is our Campus Queen 2020, she was once fearful, but she overcame.

HOW IS JPIA COPING UP WITH THE NEW NORMAL? By Lizzie Mae Posia

W

e can feel it in the air, in every conversation and every news report. As we open our social media feed, our heart races a little. We toss and turn at night. This started in December 2019 when the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was reported in China, disseminate worldwide within a few months, and was affirmed as a pandemic by the World Health Organization on 11 March 2020. This took the world by a bombshell. All has ceased globally. Projects were hindered, offices were closed, and schools were shut down. Thanks to the novel coronavirus, the universe seems to have ground to a halt. Students, nonetheless, resume their education through online learning and video calls with their lecturers. As clasping schools open poses a safety risk to students, is the model currently the best choice? Dianne Tendencia (1st Year) “at first, it’s quite hard for me to adapt to the new system of learning because of slow internet connection. but as the months pass, I learned how to adjust and deal with the new normal.”

Maira Luczon (2nd Year): “I had difficulties coping up lalo na sa acads since many of us are depending on our teachers pa rin in terms of pagtuturo, and sobrang hirap mag-keep up sa classes whenever there are lessons left undiscussed tapos papa-activity agad, diba? So ayun, ‘di ko masasabing we totally coped up with the situation pero super naging helpful ‘yung internet and socmed para maka-adjust naman kahit onti.”

Last September 2020, numerous private schools have begun their online classes, and it seems that students are having a rough time dealing with the new arrangement and using the hashtag on Twitter to vent their exasperation. The #Academicfreeze was partaken by many students because of how arduous online learning is compared to physical classes. Several students grumbled that they are no longer learning, as their emphasis has moved regularly to complete tasks. Presently, students are peering at over a year of studying from home, with several colleges and universities planning to continue online learning next year. How will they be elicited by their wellbeing and academics? Let us nourish our curiosity by the statements of JPIANS from different year levels on how they are coping up in the new normal. Are their ordeals the same or different?

Rachelle Dimaandal (Third Year): “Building a strong bond with supportive and caring people is one of the most effective coping mechanism. The second thing that helped me to endure hardships is being gentle and patient with myself. Third, filling my mind with a lot of positive but realistic thoughts and practicing to have the mindset that rest is not a sin, it’s okay to rest when you feel tired. Lastly, but the most important of all coping mechanisms is keeping my communication with the Lord.”

Sometimes, the world places you in a situation where success does not come right away, and we do not know if it is the process of how things work or maybe it’s a form of reservation, where time prepares your heart to be ready for something exceptional. In February 2020, the month of “Love” to be described, also the perfect season for IIST’s “Campus Queen and King,” an event where each academic organization representative competes for the said title. One of the most influential candidates is Vince Matthew Romero, FEA --- an AB-COMM student, the Editor in Chief of the campus’ student publication, The Collegiate Inquiry, and an awardee of various recognitions from different journalism competitions in photography. The description is an understatement because this young man is not just covered with a charming face but is also possessing a grateful heart and a resilient mindset, a person who is ready to turn the setbacks into breakthroughs! Despite having such exposure, Vince is also a person who experiences misadventures in life and gets a little nervous when placed in front of a crowd. Regardless of these little details, he still manages to appear confident and optimistic. To him, no matter how easy or difficult the task is, doing and being at your best is always essential, and coming prepared is more important than not being ready at all.

June-December 2020

His coronation day might be held in an entirely different way or at a later date. This only proves that when you have faith, the right things will always come to you. Embracing his crown probably took a while to be placed on his head. He may not experience the traditional way of recognition, but one thing is for sure, the world prepared him a gift that no one can take away, that is, the gift of growth. Not everyone has the patience to wait or has the guts to trust for the right timing. Most of the time, some people tend to ask the fruit of their efforts immediately, but a concept not all of us can understand is the world doesn’t move for 24 hours unreasonably, this only means that there are still new days to come and brand new beginnings to start with. Things can go and shift unexpectedly, there can be some turns that are hard to comprehend, and Unpredictable happenings can change the way we look at life. Surprisingly, as we grow old, we tend to appreciate the good things more than the battles we are supposed to conquer. For Vince Matthew, a true King is not about the perks nor the favorable attention. It is about how he acknowledges his supporters as a part of success and how he become the person he wanted to be after the dilemmas he has faced. Along with that, if you know that you provided sufficient work, there is no need to fill your

It’s not you, it’s just not you. By: Alyssa Bea Aficionado

n this trying season, everyone needs to cope, and each of us has to find a way to do so. It has been and is still hard for everyone, students, faculty members, people with jobs, or lost their jobs. It has been hard for everyone may it be mentally, emotionally, and financially.

Meet Mrs. Corazon Bagaipo, a senior citizen of the Philippines and a major in Mathematics, Profession Education, and a Research Professor at the Imus Institute of Science and Technology. She was keeping up being venerable in her chosen field since this pandemic struck, according to her, not been easy, especially with her age. Technology and the internet are the most maximized tools at this age, even before the pandemic, what more during it. The school became online; in this case, Mrs.

Bagaipo’s help in time of “need” was her grandchild. “ My apo was always by my side, especially the first weeks of teaching.” She said. But Mrs. Bagaipo is a very independent woman. As of now, she said she could manage teaching alone even without anyone’s help, but it was hard for her at the beginning. Her dilemma now is not about the technology or how to create google classrooms or google forms or zoom meetings, now it is more about the subject proper. Most of us, especially students, think that it is only us who are having a hard time, that it is only us who’s struggling, but in reality, no. It is nowhere near that, professors regardless of age or level, are also struggling. Baguio said that teaching online costs so much effort for you to consider whether your students

will understand or not, whether the method is effective, or if the talking for hours is worth the impact. Let’ add that her eyes are already blurry due to age, and she’ll have to face whatever device she’ll use for teaching for hours, preparations before every class, checking of submitted online activities, and many other things. You may say all of these are easy, and everyone does that. Of course, consider her age, 75 years old, and still do all of these. This is just one out of many teachers in any grade level and age that struggle. Let us all keep in mind that it is not only us students who are having a hard time; everyone does. So practice being considerate towards your professors if they have some shortcomings because they are all mere humans coping up as we do.
