As the news broke about the heartbreaking tragedy that occurred on the University of Virginia’s campus late Sunday night, the Collegiate Times staff was in the midst of collaborating with The Cavalier Daily, UVA’s student newspaper, on our annual rivalry issue. The rivalry issue began in 2020 as a form of partnership between the two staff in order to create a joint paper that both students and communities at Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia could enjoy. Although there is a long-standing athletic rivalry between the two schools, this issue has been
a way to bridge that gap and come together to look forward to a beloved tradition that spans back over 120 years. This year, the third year since the rivalry tradition began, the original issue was meant to again spark friendly competition among our two schools’ student bodies and highlight our athletic rivalry that takes its form in the Commonwealth Clash. Both publications also have a tradition of competing to raise funds through GoFundMe for our respective papers in the days leading up to the game. In light of these recent and painful events,
however, we have decided to rework both the rivalry issue and the fundraiser in a way that shows our support, solidarity and love toward the UVA community. Sports are not the only tradition these two schools share, and our communities have always been interconnected in a meaningful way. This issue is meant to be in tribute to the University of Virginia students, faculty and families affected by this tragedy. The ‘Hoos were there for the Hokies when we needed it in 2007, showing us an outpouring of love and support, and now we are here for you.
