RECTOR’S LETTER Dear Parishioner,

CONFIRMATION It was a great delight to welcome Bishop Harold Miller, along with a large number of visitors, for the confirmation of fourteen young people in St. Columba’s on Sunday 26th April. This was a most important occasion for each of the candidates, their families and our parish. They are now full communicant members of the Church and will receive Holy Communion for the first time on Sunday 3rd May at the 8.15am service. It is so important that we continue to support and encourage each of them during this time. Please pray for them by name in your prayers: Henry Auchmuty

Jonathan Kelly

Emma Craig

Christine McKee

Sarah Craig

Grace Owens

Bruce Elkin

Jonathan Stewart

Ellie Fullerton

Rachel Stewart

Four candidates from our daughter parish of St. Molua’s were also confirmed with us. We wish them all God’s richest blessing for the months and years ahead. It has been a source of great blessing that so many of our confirmation candidates in recent years have maintained good church attendance and are actively supporting many of our church activities. A number of them have served as Junior Churchwardens where they have made a significant contribution to our worship. The new Junior Churchwardens are Jamie Sadlier who was confirmed in 2013 and Emma Craig who has just been confirmed.

BISHOP OF CONNOR’S VISIT TO ST. COLUMBA’S SUNDAY 3rd MAY We look forward to welcoming The Right Reverend Alan Abernethy to St. Columba’s for our All Age Worship service at 10.30am on Sunday 3rd May. This will be a good opportunity to meet him before he comes to lead us in our services and activities during the “Week of Focus” which takes place from Sunday 27th September – Sunday 4th October. Our Parish Mission Team have been meeting with Bishop Alan to plan this exciting week in the parish. Further details about the “Week of Focus” will be in the summer Columban. I encourage you to be with us in St Columba’s on this day Yours in His service,

PARISH PRAYER

God, our Heavenly Father, make the door of our Church wide enough to welcome all who need human love, fellowship and a Father’s care; but narrow enough to shut out all envy, pride and hatred. Here may the tempted find help, the sorrowing receive comfort and the penitent be assured of your mercy. And here may all your children renew their strength and go on their way in hope and joy; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. Bishop Thomas Ken 1637-1711 5

Gardeners’ Corner Roadshow for BBC Radio Ulster

on

Tuesday 19th May 2015 at

7.30pm Hosted by: The Revd John R. Auchmuty Venue: St. Columba’s Parish Church, Knock 8

Welcome to the

Gardeners’ Corner Roadshow We are delighted to be asked to come and record a roadshow with your organisation. We take the roadshow around the province for several reasons, but the obvious and main one is to make a programme for BBC Radio Ulster. For this reason I would encourage you to submit a question which would be of interest to you the listener: Some questions crop up every season - moss on the lawns, camellias not flowering, slug control, whilst we are happy to deal with these from time to time we do encourage more unusual questions. Please, if possible, bring a sample of the tree, plant or shrub with you and also make every effort to attend the recording if you do submit a question. Thank you for taking part. We look forward to seeing you and we hope you enjoy Gardeners’ Corner one of the most popular programmes on BBC Radio Ulster. Julie Brown Producer

Name:____________________________________________________ Club, group or organisation:__________________________________ Your question:______________________________________________ Please return this card to the Rector no later than Tuesday, 5th May 2015. We would encourage you to bring along a sample of your problem plant to the recording. 9

Thought for the Month

Attitude

When the editor of this esteemed magazine asked me to contribute this article he mentioned the May issue. Something else was happening in May and eventually I was prompted by a letter from H.M.Government declaring that, in May, they were giving me a State Pension. Despite being in denial the inevitable was happening, OAP, Senior Citizen, whatever P.C. term is acceptable this month, I have had to “Man-up” as they say on TV nowadays. Attitude is the key word, even though my body creaks and groans my mind thinks it is a lot younger. I still work, accepting jobs that stretch me physically and mentally without killing or embarrassing me. My inspiration is my Uncle Billy McBride. He was in the Merchant Marines during World War II, sailing on the convoys to supply Russia. Billy was torpedoed not once but twice! The first occasion was when he was serving on the Kenbane Head, sank by the Admiral Scheer in November 1940. In the Merchant Marine, when ships were sunk during WW II, sailors pay stopped immediately and only recommenced on signing on to another ship. Imagine the effect this must have had on their wives and families who were left at home to cope. Work was plentiful in the shipyard at the time but Billy felt strongly that he had to contribute to the war effort. He was only twenty at the time. So having survived the freezing waters of the Baltic Ocean, which would have been enough for most men, Billy signed on another ship immediately. Billy had Attitude you see, Attitude. He survived the War, raised three boys and this year was finally honoured with a medal presented by the Russian Government in recognition of those forgotten heroes, seventy five years after the event. Billy McBride, now ninety six years of age still displays Attitude. David McBride Our values determine our attitudes and our attitudes determine our behaviour. Our sincere thanks to David for sharing his ‘Thought’ with us. The June ‘Thought for the Month’ will be written by Esther Templeton. 10

Railway & Model Club Well, we did not have an Easter Special this year.....our engine drivers were on holiday...but hopefully we will have a Christmas Special!! Hilltop Farm is now working well with a nice flock of sheep and a small herd of cows. Our milkmaid is now kept quite busy. There is new fencing around the farm, and this is being painted as a matter of urgency. The Rector has been to check out’ The Rector’s Retreat’ and although he didn’t say too much, I think he was reasonably happy. The rest of the village is growing apace with new buildings being added each week. (Only wish we could build them as quickly, in real life, as John Robb does on the layout.) Trains are running on each club night, so do come down and have a look, and maybe try your hand at train driving. Next month I hope to have photos of the farm......in the meantime KEEP ROLLIN’! David Beattie

PAUSE Pause is our parish initiative which takes neither organisation nor commitment. It is simply a case of turning up on the day and meeting for coffee or lunch with others. They may include parishioners of St Columba’s, readers of the Columban or friends. It is open to all. Come on your own or bring a friend or two. This month we are meeting at a new venue (for Pause). We are meeting on Tuesday, 12th May 10.30am - coffee/tea and scones at Binkys, Unit 5, Eastpoint Entertainment Village, Dundonald. It is beside the cinema at Dundonald. If you require further details or help with transport, please contact me. Eileen Anderson 11

Christian Care for Families Thank you to all our members who baked cakes and buns for the Bake Sale on Mothering Sunday and also to all the parishioners who bought sweet treats. Together we helped to raise over £200 for the Church Hall Refurbishment Fund. Thanks are also due to the many members who attended the service on Tuesday evening of Holy Week and a special mention to Liz, Maureen and all who provided refreshments after the service. Just a reminder of some forthcoming events: 5 May - Our next meeting is in the Church Hall and this will encompass both our overseas meeting and the Gilnahirk area meeting. The guest speakers on the evening will be from ‘Flourish NI’, a charity dedicated to the support of people whose lives have been impacted by human trafficking. This is a great opportunity for the charity to raise awareness of the concerning issue of human trafficking. All parishioners are welcome to attend. As this is our Overseas Meeting, Mother’s Union members who collect donations for overseas causes are asked to bring these donations on this evening. 13 May – Down and Dromore Council at 7.30pm in Comber Parish. 21 May – Diocesan Indoor Members’ Tea Party, at 2.30pm in St Mark’s Newtownards. The guest speaker will be Bishop Ken Clark. Katrina Dukelow

A Student’s Psalm

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not flunk He keepeth me from lying down when I should be studying He leadeth me beside the water - cooler for a study break, He restores my faith in study guides He leads me to better study habits for my grades’ sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of borderline grades I will not have nervous breakdowns, For thou art with me My prayers and my friends they comfort me. Thou givest me answers in moments of blankness, Thou annointest my head with understanding, My test paper runneth over with questions I recognise. Surely passing grades and flying colours shall follow me All the days of examinations.

We wish all our young people well as they approach summer examinations Printed by kind permission of Knock Methodist Church.

TIME FOR REFLECTION Ephesians 3: 18 “I pray that you might know how broad and long and high and deep is Christ’s love.” The empty cross stands as a symbol of Christ’s love. Jesus loves each of us so much He was willing to die for us. Question: How broad is His love? Answer: He opened wide His arms upon the cross. Question: How long is His love? Answer: It lasts through a lifetime unto eternity. We each have His promise of eternal life. Question: How deep is His love? Answer: No matter what sort of ‘mess’ we find ourselves in, even when we are in the depths of despair through life circumstances, Jesus reaches out to support us. Question: How high is His love? Answer: So high it lifts us from our earthly circumstances into a special relationship with God. The serenity and magnificence of the Silent Valley (front cover) reflect the immensity of the all encompassing love of our Creator God.

CHRISTIAN AID WEEK - 10TH – 16TH MAY This is a very special year for Christian Aid as it is now 70 years old so please give generously in the envelope provided. If you pay income tax you can increase your donation by completing the white ‘gift aid’ label which is attached to the ‘Christian Aid’ envelope and place it, with your donation, in that envelope. Including this ‘gift aid’ label will not cost you anything but ‘Christian Aid’ will be able to claim, from the Government, for each £1 donated. Your help to deliver and collect some envelopes would also be very much appreciated. You would be asked to deliver/collect from one small area and it would take about one hour of your time. Please volunteer by signing the list on the table at the back of the church and I will be in contact with you. Hazel Reid 13

Doves

We’ve had quite a few busy weeks at Doves lately. In March we were entertained colouring leprechaun faces and drinking green milk for St Patrick’s day. For Mother’s day we made some special gifts for our mums and just before Easter we joined Brownies for an Easter Egg Hunt and treats. That evening we said goodbye to Hazel and Janie as it was their last night with us. We have plenty of space for more children so if you’re aged 4-6 come and join us in the small hall each Friday at 6.30-7.30pm. Please note: There will be NO Doves on 29 May. Moira

Celebrating Achievement Congratulations to Moira Saunders who will be travelling to Myanmar (Burma) to represent her company. Many firms select charities to support each year and Moira’s company, in 2014, collected £104 million. This is being donated to schools in Myanmar and Moira has been chosen, along with four others from the 18 United Kingdom and Ireland stores, to visit Myanmar to see how the money is being spent. She leaves on 24th May and will be away for six days. We wish her a safe journey and look forward to hearing of her experiences.

Alan Rogers Alan Rogers has been an extremely loyal and hardworking member of our Select Vestry during the past eighteen years where he has contributed so much to our discussions and work. Nine years ago his Select Vestry colleagues elected him Honorary Secretary. In this important position Alan brought his many professional skills to the benefit of St. Columba’s. This was very evident in his clear and concise minutes of our meetings which he prepared in a most diligent manner. Alan adopted an extremely conscientious approach to his work as Honorary Secretary which included the preparation of a helpful Briefing Note for my assistance with each Select Vestry meeting. I always valued and appreciated our regular monthly meetings in which we discussed the items on our agenda paper. Following such distinguished service to our parish Alan retired both as Honorary Secretary and also as a Select Vestry member last month. It was my great privilege to present Alan with a voucher for Neill’s Hill and wine during my Address at the Annual Easter Vestry meeting as a token of our appreciation for all his wise council, advice, friendship and support. I personally thank Alan for all he has done to develop St. Columba’s throughout his membership of the Select Vestry and wish him every blessing for the future. The Rector. 16

Brownie Notes The Brownies have been very busy over the last couple of months. They have completed their craft badges including decorating their tee shirts, making bracelets and planning their bedrooms. They also made cards for their Mums for Mother’s Day. The Doves joined with us for our Annual Easter Egg Hunt. While everyone was enjoying the Easter buns made by Helen and having a well deserved drink of juice, Holly and Ross hid around 50 eggs all over the Main Hall. When they were finished all 16 present charged round the hall frantically searching for them all. Thankfully every one was found and shared out evenly. Our first week back after the Easter holidays will be a very important night. Not only is it Rachel’s birthday but because she will be 7 she will be enrolled as a Brownie. Also we are hoping that Janie and Hazel will join us from Doves. Hopefully with the longer days and better weather we will be able to begin some of our outdoor activities. Beth Cairnduff

LADIES GUILD After all the coverage in the press we are looking forward to welcoming Ash Redmond to talk about Trafficking in The Province. As their advertising says “Human Trafficking is modern day Slavery”, something we thought we had confined to history. It is truly horrifying to think that someone may be living as a prisoner somewhere near you. Invisible Traffic-staffed by volunteers - was set up to stop trafficking in Northern Ireland. To raise funds to help their good work the Ladies’s Guild hosted the refreshments on Easter Sunday and we were delighted to raise £118. This month sees our final meeting and AGM for the 2014/15 season on 20th May. We will be joined by our Patron Mrs Caroline Auchmuty who has kindly agreed to share with us some of the ins and outs of her everyday life. Just now we are searching for next year’s speakers so if you know someone we would love to hear from you. Imelda Shephard

All Age Worship On Sunday 3 May I hope to see the usual faces and lots of new ones at the back of the Church for refreshments after the 10.30am Service when we shall be raising funds for the RNLI. Last year the lifeboats in Northern Ireland were launched 261 times bringing 281 people to safety while the charities’ lifeguards helped 284 people across 10 beaches. The busiest beaches were in Portrush and lifeguards dealt with 126 incidents and rescued 148 people. So, please plan to be with us and support this very worthwhile cause. Roberta 18

Ladies Bowling On Monday 23rd March, our final bowling day, we decided to go to Neills Hill for coffee, tea etc. This was a good idea and 16 members turned up. Also the Rector called in to see us and presented the Eileen Madill Shield to the winners - Linda Patterson and Joan Plumpton. Congratulations! Some of us will be playing outdoor bowls during the summer but the indoor bowling will recommence in September as usual. Phyllis Newton

Men’s Club Notes Since our last update we have progressed well in our own club competitions. Having reached the final stages of Lamont Pairs’ Cup, Paul Stewart Cup and The Canon Noble Single’s Trophy. The Lamont Pairs’ Cup was won by Johnathan Launchbury and Jack Crockard who defeated Stuart Beckwith and Ian McClune in a thrilling final. The victor of The Paul Stewart Cup was Jack Dunlop who defeated Paddy Malone in another tense final. The remaining Trophy was played for before our AGM on the 13th April when John Robb was successful against David Beattie in the Canon Noble Single’s Trophy. The end of season outing has been arranged for the 27th April when members and friends will visit the Somme Centre at Conlig. If anyone wishes to join us and visit the centre feel free to contact me or any club member. Indeed you can even turn up on the night and mingle with us during the guided tour. Admission on the night is £5.75 per head, with the tour commencing at 7pm sharp. The End of Season dinner and prize giving is on 8th May in The Coast Restaurant, Holywood. The .com domain 15th March 2015 is the thirtieth anniversary of the very first registered .com domain name. Only 30 years! The cultural revolution has been swift and overwhelming. All our lives (whether we like it or not) are now lived in the light of the mighty .com. Nothing works (planes, trains, the electricity, the supermarkets, banks and trading) without it, and those ‘domain names’ are now part of most people’s everyday lives. There’s no doubt that the digital revolution has brought benefits. For most people, email is a boon and blessing (apart from the deluge of unwanted messages, of course). With regard to them, I rather liked the order of service for a wedding recently which printed out the Lord’s Prayer but rendered the last petition as ‘deliver us from email’. Millions of people enjoy Facebook and Twitter, and the internet has undoubtedly helped to tear down the world-wide iron curtains of censorship and news manipulation. Millions of people shop online, and churches and charities are keen to join in the plea to google their domain name and explore the wonders on offer. There are, however, drawbacks, of which people of a certain generation are perhaps more aware than those who have grown up in the last thirty or forty years. One that has struck me recently is the dearth of contact. I had a request recently to be a Facebook ‘Friend’ of someone I didn‘t know. I looked on his page and found he had 1,400 ‘Friends’. That’s not friendship, that’s stamp collecting. It’s sadly possible for the screen, the iPad or the smartphone to substitute for actual contact a kind of fantasy electronic world. As we’ve seen, that world can often be cruel and unthinking. It is a fact of modern life that people and organisations can hide behind a .com privacy. It is a revealing experience to go to the web-site of British Telecom - a telephone company, when all is said and done - and try to find a telephone number to ring and actually speak to a human being. It’s there, true, but hidden away like a shameful secret. They clearly don’t want you to phone them. The banks now offer a ‘contactless’ credit card. What I am afraid of is a ‘contactless’ society, a vast hub of digital messages flying about, but never a smile or a human touch. Ten minutes chat over the garden fence is surely worth a couple of hours on Facebook.
