RECTOR’S LETTER WEEK OF MISSION SUNDAY, 27th SEPTEMBER SUNDAY, 4th OCTOBER Dear Parishioner I invite you to come, learn and share with us throughout our week of mission beginning today. Our Missioner, The Bishop of Connor, The Right Reverend Alan Abernethy received an enthusiastic welcome at the beginning of our programme of church services and activities. Throughout this week Bishop Alan will be encouraging us to connect our faith more effectively with daily life. Please invite your neighbours and friends to join us as we learn more about our faith whilst enjoying fellowship together. Full details of the programme are in the Mission Leaflet which was delivered to your home and is also printed in this edition of the Columban. How often our faith can be weakened through the stress and struggles in our lives. Our daily journey through life takes many twists and turns and we need the stability and support from our relationship with God to sustain us through those difficult situations. It was St. Augustine, a former Archbishop of Canterbury who once said “God is always with us but we are not always with Him.” Throughout this week of mission we have a good opportunity to CONNECT afresh with God and to be with Him. Please CONNECT with us to receive God’s love, support and peace through your attendance and prayers. BBC RADIO ULSTER BROADCAST SERVICE Our morning worship on Sunday 18th October will be broadcast live on BBC Radio Ulster. To facilitate the radio schedule the service will be sung Holy Communion with an earlier start time of 10.15am. Please arrive in St. Columba’s by 9.45am for a short rehearsal with the Producer before going “on air”. This will be an important outreach for our parish in this diocesan year of mission. We will combine our 9.30am and 10.30am services on that morning with the involvement of the Music Group and the young people in the broadcast. I encourage you to be in with us in St. Columba’s on that day. Your attendance will enable the listeners to experience for themselves the excellent singing and the enthusiastic congregational participation which we have at our services. Yours in His Service,

Church Hall Refurbishment Fund We are pleased to report that the work to replace the Hall windows started in August and was completed in early September just in time to allow organisations to recommence. The windows are double glazed in polyester powder coated aluminium frames to provide better heat retention in the winter. Safety restrictors have been fitted to opening lights and these can now be reached from floor level to allow better ventilation. The high level windows to the Rectory side and stage have also been replaced. Repair works were undertaken to the gutters and roof to ensure the Hall continues to give many further years of use to the Parish and outside organisations. We would like to thank Boxite Ltd, Antrim who efficiently carried out the work. We also thank those who generously supported the many fundraising events in recent years to enable us to carry out this essential work. Hall Committee
Improvements to the West End of Church Following agreement of the proposed design, tender documentation has now been issued. Tenders are due for return at the end of the month. They will then be reviewed and a contractor appointed (subject to vestry approval). Hall Committee

PARISH PRAYER
God, our Heavenly Father, make the door of our Church wide enough to welcome all who need human love, fellowship and a Father’s care; but narrow enough to shut out all envy, pride and hatred. Here may the tempted find help, the sorrowing receive comfort and the penitent be assured of your mercy. And here may all your children renew their strength and go on their way in hope and joy; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. Bishop Thomas Ken 1637-1711
Pause Over the course of the past few years parishioners and friends have been taking time to ‘PAUSE’ from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and meet with others. There is no formality, no commitment and no registration. If you are free you are very welcome to meet with us at the chosen venue. You may make new friends or get to know someone you see in church or at the shops but do not have time for a chat. We are meeting on two occasions this month: Thursday, 15th October, 12.30pm: Hillmount Garden Centre – for lunch – all welcome! Tuesday, 27th October, 10.30am: The Secret Garden – for coffee. We would love to see you on one or both of these dates. If you require further details or transport please contact me. Eileen Anderson (Phone 9020 3684) 9
Family Times!
Thought for the Month
My favourite place to visit is the North Coast. It has something for the whole family – beaches, walks, restaurants, shops, amusements, film locations and lots of nice places to stay. My first ever holiday was in Portballintrae when I was 8 months old (so my Mum told me). I must have enjoyed it as I’ve been back lots of times. The next place I stayed was in “the big house” in Dunseverick – we went with another family. Dad used to carry me on his back as we walked to the beach, climbed over the stile and then we spent hours playing in the rock pools. Downhill became a favourite place of mine after we held New Year’s Eve parties in Downhill Beach House for several years. We hired the whole hostel for two nights and spent time with all of my cousins (there was usually 25-30 of us). There was no TV so we played lots of games inside and out. I remember one stormy evening when the electricity went off and we sent Kim and Mike out to get candles - this was the first time Mike had met the Stevenson family. By the time the power returned dinner was very late that night. One year, on January 1st, Kim was swimming in the sea in her shorts and even found an ice-cream van called JIM’S ICES. I was back on the North Coast in July this year. This was the first time I had been to the new Visitor’s Centre at the Giants Causeway. It was very interesting and lots of foreigners were impressed. Have you been across Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge? I have – 2 times - it was a bit scary. While I was waiting on the island to return there was great excitement as a bride and groom appeared on the bridge to get their wedding photos taken. They were from Poland and we found out that it is becoming popular with Polish couples. A new place we visited this year was the Dark Hedges which is a place where The Game of Thrones is filmed. Lots of people are coming from all over the world to visit these famous trees. I will be back in the North Coast again soon. Laura Stevenson Our sincere thanks to Laura for sharing this with us. The November ‘Thought’ will be written by Victor Dukelow.

Saint Columba’s Craft & Hobby Circle We have now had our first chatty morning catching up with each other after our summer break with everyone looking refreshed. Our next meeting is on Monday, 5th October when we can discuss what we could do to create funds towards the Church Hall Refurbishment Fund. This has been somewhat depleted since the new windows went in and the guttering sorted. Thinking caps on please, all ideas will be very welcome. See you then! Carol

All Age Worship Tea and Coffee Many thanks to everyone who supported our local Marie Curie Centre on Sunday, 6 September when we raised the great amount of £111.20. On Sunday, 4th October we shall be raising funds for The Leprosy Mission. The Leprosy Mission provides a comprehensive range of services to meet the needs of people, families and communities affected by leprosy. The Leprosy Mission hospitals and health centres provide excellent care for people affected by leprosy, however, people need more than medicine. The Leprosy Mission programmes offer compassion with action. While they identify and assist people with treatment they also treat physical impairments through reconstructive surgery. They also invest in education, and vocational training, counselling and community based rehabilitation activities. Please plan to be with us and enjoy a chat over a cuppa. Roberta

Ladies Guild Hello everyone, There’s not a lot of news this month so I thought I would share this poem with you which I found in a church I visited during the summer I hope it will bring a smile to your lips !! DUSTING ........... Dust if you must, but wouldn’t it be better To paint a picture or write a letter, Bake a cake or plant a seed, Ponder the difference between want and need. Dust if you must, but there’s not much time, With rivers to swim and mountains to climb, Music to hear and books to read, Friends to cherish and life to lead. Dust if you must, but the world’s out there, With the sun in your eyes, the wind in your hair, A flutter of snow, a shower of rain, This day will not come round again. Dust if you must, but bear in mind, Old age will come and it’s not kind, And when you go - and go you must You yourself, will make more dust. Anon We are looking forward to our visitor, Pat Mollan, on Wednesday, 21st October. Pat is in charge of The Mount, a charity formed within the Church of Ireland to respond to the command of Jesus: “Heal anyone who is sick and tell them, God’s kingdom is right on your doorstep”. Incidentally, Pat and her husband, Rab, married here in St. Columba’s in 1969. Imelda Shephard.

Commissioning of our organisation leaders Our parish organisation leaders and Sunday School teachers were commissioned by the Rector during the All Age Worship service on Sunday, 6th September. We wish them every blessing as they begin activities for their new year’s programme.
PARISH WALK Weather Permitted! Early on a September evening, after a pleasant walk along Comber Greenway, parishioners gathered in the grounds of the church to enjoy BBQ refreshments. BRB Catering (Brian, Robin & Brian) stepped up to the mark once again, providing a feast of burgers and sausages. Rumour has it some people had a third serving. Whilst people milled around eating and chatting they pondered the question, ‘Who do you think they are?’ The quiz, set by Karen and Billy McAlpine, kept everyone intrigued as they tried to guess the identity of certain interesting characters in our congregation. It may surprise you to know we have a circus performer, a lady who likes to experiment with chocolate and gravy and a budding meteorologist amongst our ranks. The afternoon and evening were a great success. Despite the awful forecast the weather remained kind, the food was delicious and the fellowship heartening. It was a lovely way to round off the summer and prepare for a host of events during the autumn, in particular our week of mission. I’ll leave you with one of the riddles. Number 2 may be familiar to you But there is something you never knew Because she looks so very flash You’d know she has a walnut dash. Guess who? Linda Wilson

Rector’s Notes The Rector writes....It was so encouraging to see the Sunday School children take a more active part in the All Age Worship services and the Family Communion services last year. Through their participation our worship was enriched in a wonderful way and their involvement was warmly appreciated by the congregation and myself. I thank Karen McAlpine for her work preparing the children for these services during their Sunday School classes and for assisting them to write their own prayers. Karen has retired from this role to concentrate on her work as our Parish Reader. I welcome her successor Rachel Leacock to this important role and wish her every success as she further develops the participation of the children in our church services. Rachel brings a wealth of experience to her new role as a teacher and also having grown up in St. Columba’s with her parents Ian and Moranne Noad and her sister Rebecca.

Youth Etc. At the start of September Youth Etc. members attended Greenhill YMCA in Newcastle for some laser questing in the woods. There were 13 of us divided into rival teams of boys and girls. It started off with the boys winning the first game by a large stretch but the girls quickly followed suit and won the final two games but statistically the boys won! The activity was thoroughly enjoyed by all and afterwards we went into Newcastle for an ice cream and chat. I would like to thank David and Josephine for organising this event and we are looking forward to our next activity. It would be lovely to welcome some new members as the year progresses.

“Expect nothing, just to love” One of our parishioners, Moira Saunders, visited Myanmar last May to see how the charity money collected by her company was being used. The following is an account of one of the days she spent there.
It’s day 3 of our IKEA Foundation IWitness trip to Myanmar, and this morning we found ourselves in a Buddhist monastery. We have been greeted in a way I had never imagined nor prepared myself for. Traditional music on drums accompanied by a martial arts dance met us along with beautiful strings of jasmine flowers presented to us around our necks. We had come to meet with child-protection group members. The children and adults told us of the many challenges they face around raising awareness of the group and gaining trust from local authorities to enable influence. Children barely older than primary school age tell of how they encourage others to stand up for their rights and to seek help from the child-protection group if they are harmed or are in any danger. One 12 year old girl talks of how she
18
teaches others about sexual abuse assaults and advises girls not to wash after this happens and to keep their clothes as evidence. This girl smiles while she is recalling the story because she knows she is changing attitudes and behaviour while empowering others. Some speak of how they doubt themselves and their abilities, yet constantly strive to promote confidence. It’s hard to fight back the emotion when a 14-year-old boy talks about standing up to a neighbour who was violently abusive to his child. If I had half their confidence and pride, I would bottle and sell it! A reduction in domestic violence and corporal punishment, the participation of parents in the group, and being able to reunite parents with lost children are some of the achievements this group is proudest of. When asked what she does for fun, one girl replies by saying, “I teach the younger children about child protection and the lessons learned at the childprotection group.” A lot of children in the community don’t have the opportunity to attend school; they have jobs as brick layers, rubbish collectors or beggars. The childprotection group children say, “I could be them. I’m sad and sympathetic.” The children we speak with aspire to be teachers, doctors, lawyers, social workers or child-protection workers. These dreams aren’t so they can leave Myanmar; they’re so they can stay and continue to develop the communities they love. The morning finishes shortly after one boy whose aspiration is to be a singer is persuaded to sing. He does so beautifully and again with confidence. After I ask for a rough translation, I am told this is a love song that conveys the message to expect nothing, just to love.

Paddy Nesbitt Paddy Nesbitt has looked after the flowers in St. Columba’s during the past 22 years in a most conscientious and dedicated manner. She has worked tirelessly to ensure that there were always beautiful flowers in our church for the various services and has offered invaluable support to those who have placed their names on the Flower Rota each week. In addition to being in St. Columba’s at 10.30am on Saturday mornings when the church flowers are being arranged by those on the rota Paddy has, on so many occasions, supplied lovely seasonal flowers throughout the church which we have all admired. Paddy so often came over to the church at different times each week to water the flowers ensuring that they were always looking well especially for the Thursday Holy Communion and other services when necessary. While so much of her work was done quietly and efficiently behind the scenes in the empty church we were always met with the benefit of her floral skills upon arrival with the church so beautifully decorated. Paddy has now decided to retire from this position and I thank her for all her work and invaluable support to our church which she has done in a meticulous way. To mark her retirement Moranne Noad and I visited Paddy at home recently to present her with a gift of flowers from St. Columba’s as a token of our appreciation and gratitude. I welcome her successor Eleanor Launchbury and wish her every blessing as she commences her new responsibilities. The Rector

Railway and Model Club Well, summer is over. I missed it this year...I think it was on a Thursday, wasn’t it.!!! During the summer months, work just kept on going with a number of members going to the railway room during most of July and part of August. We now have a good start to the high road past Kensington Station, and a new parkland mapped out. We are at a stage when we will be laying out the gardens, in the village, and footpaths should follow soon. A new layout should be starting within the next few months. This will be in N gauge, and the whole layout will fit onto a table top. This will be possible because we have been given some N gauge rails and rolling stock with which to start. There will be an open morning, after the services, in October I hope to see a lot of you there. Keep watching the Pew News for details. Keep on rollin’.

MU ACTIVITY GROUP On our opening night it is always good to catch up with each other and hear all the things everyone had been doing over the summer months. During the supper break we spend time talking and planning our activities for the winter season. We are now in our 28th year as part of Mothers’ Union as an Activity Group. Although small in numbers we still enjoy our Tuesday evenings but in saying that we would warmly welcome new members. Maureen
HOSPITAL VISITING
The Clergy would appreciate being informed if parishioners are in hospital, going into hospital, are being transferred or if they have been discharged, and will be pleased to offer them pastoral support. Do not assume the Clergy already know the information as situations have occurred recently when they have not been informed. Please telephone the Rector (9047 1514) or the Assistant Priest (9145 8706) to enable them to take careful note of the details.

Wordsearch To St Luke, whose feast-day is 18th October, we owe a beautifully written gospel as well as the Book of Acts. He was a Greek physician and faithful travelling companion to St Paul. Under house arrest near the end of his life Paul noted, ‘only Luke is with me’. Luke’s gospel focuses on the compassion of Christ, and offers us moving parables, such as the Good Samaritan and Prodigal Son. Women figure more prominently in Luke’s gospel than in any other: look out for the extended story of the Virgin Birth, and stories of Mary, Elizabeth, and the woman who was a sinner. His gospel also features more poor people, more lepers, more ‘sinners’, who are all shown to be ‘inside’ the love of Christ. In Acts, Luke skilfully links sacred and profane history, as subsequent archaeology has shown. He tells of how the early Christians moved away from Jerusalem into the pagan world, and especially on to Rome.
