RECTOR’S LETTER PAINTING OF THE CHURCH Dear Parishioner Since the completion of the project of the West End of the Church, your Select Vestry and I have received many comments about the poor condition of the interior painting (front cover). At our recent meeting we fully agreed with these comments and noted that it is 20 years since the church was last painted. As the money in the Refurbishment Fund has been completely used to pay for the new work at the back of church, we need your financial support to address your concerns. HOW CAN YOU HELP? The Select Vestry and I have organised a specific appeal to raise the money for this important painting work to be done. This work, including scaffolding, will cost £11,000. We are giving every member of St Columba’s a personal opportunity to support this appeal by using the envelope in this edition of The Columban which has been hand-delivered to every home in the parish. APPEAL ENVELOPE Please put your financial gift in the appeal envelope, which can also be Gift Aided, and place it on the offertory plate at our Easter Day Services on Sunday, 27th March, when we will celebrate the good news of the Resurrection, or on any Sunday in March if that is more convenient. We all require the use of our church at different times in our lives, for Sunday services, baptisms, weddings and funerals. In addition, the church now hosts inspirational concerts and events for members of the parish and the community. During this month you have an opportunity of becoming directly involved in maintaining our beautiful church by supporting this appeal as we prepare to mark the 120th Anniversary of St Columba’s in June. Every single contribution will help towards our target and will be gratefully appreciated. Thank you.
Yours in His Service,

He supports Glentoran Football Club but often wonders why!
GOOD FRIDAY The Conductor of our Good Friday Three Hour Devotions will be the Bishop of Clogher, the Right Reverend John McDowell. We look forward to welcoming Bishop McDowell back to St Columba’s following his excellent sermons throughout Holy Week last year. By way of introduction to his devotions, we thank him for sending this short article: The “Three” Hours on Good Friday is a traditional service of devotion recalling the time when Our Lord was upon the Cross. The service is one primarily of reflection and includes many periods of silence. In many ways the silence is the most important part of the Liturgy and its purpose is to enable us to escape the ‘busyness’ of the world and all its preoccupations, in order to consider the Cross of the Son of God and to bring it into our souls. The reading of the Scriptures, the singing of a hymn and the listening to a series of short addresses is meant to provide us with food for imaginative contemplation during the silences. For those unable to remain for the duration of the devotions it is possible to leave at the end of each section or during the singing of the hymns. The evening service will be The Tenebrae at 8.00pm.

HOSPITAL VISITING
The Clergy would appreciate being informed if parishioners are in hospital, going into hospital, are being transferred or if they have been discharged, and will be pleased to offer them pastoral support. Do not assume the Clergy already know the information as situations occur regularly of which they were not aware. Please telephone the Rector (9047 1514) or the Assistant Priest (9145 8706) to enable them to take careful note of the details.
PARISH PRAYER
God, our Heavenly Father, make the door of our Church wide enough to welcome all who need human love, fellowship and a Father’s care; but narrow enough to shut out all envy, pride and hatred. Here may the tempted find help, the sorrowing receive comfort and the penitent be assured of your mercy. And here may all your children renew their strength and go on their way in hope and joy; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. Bishop Thomas Ken 1637-1711

Art Club
The Art Club continues to meet each Thursday morning with some of us using watercolour and others oils or acrylic. We even have those who prefer pastel or pen and ink. It is a particular pleasure for us when Bob is there to encourage our efforts. A number of our members have recently been unwell and we wish them a speedy recovery and hope to see them soon. Others among us have been travelling far and wide and we look forward to their return. Will they have any new artistic influences? Jennifer Johnston, a former parishioner, who went to live in England, very kindly gave us a large painting by Derek Melville and this has recently been sent to auction. On Sunday, 20th March we are providing refreshments in church after the 10.30am service. Hope to see you then. Vida

Thought for the Month
I really like boxes, large ones, small ones, wooden ones, plastic ones, cardboard ones, indeed almost any type I like them so much that I can spend many a contented moment examining them while out shopping. I search for ones that might meet my specific criteria for size and shape. Colour and pattern are also important and the ideal find is pronounced ‘cute.’ Storage boxes conceal all matter of items in a very organised manner.
There are, however, some boxes that I don’t like and those are the ones that are sometimes used to describe people. The ones that define someone as ‘quiet’ or ‘confident’ or any other adjective you prefer. These boxes are restrictive and can even be uncomfortable. Perhaps we are guilty also of putting ourselves in boxes and this can define the limits of who we are and what we think we can achieve. We are all individuals and our personalities are not static. We all adapt to different circumstances and vary our responses accordingly. What about us in St. Columba’s? How might we be described as a church? Are we traditional, conservative, welcoming, friendly, supportive …….? How do we want to be thought of? Are there changes we want to implement? We are as individuals, and therefore as a church family, made in the image of God and we are required, through Scripture, to be bold for Him. We need to step outside our comfort zones and reach outside of our boxes to bring glory to Him. We may not consider that we have the necessary talents and abilities but we are assured that God will give to us the gifts and strength we require to do His will. I wonder what God is asking each of us to do over the coming weeks and months? Will we do it? Karen Our sincere thanks to Karen, our recently commissioned Diocesan Lay Reader, for sharing her ‘Thought’ with us. The April ‘Thought for the Month’ will be written by Kyleen Clarke.

Lenten lunch
The All Age Worship Service on Sunday, 7th February gave parishioners the opportunity to view the now completed work at the West End of the church. The notice boards are now attached to the walls, some pews have been removed, new flooring laid and the splendid cabinet in place. The many favourable comments were much appreciated. Following the service some 130 parishioners attended the Lenten Lunch in the Church Hall. This gave the opportunity for all to admire the new pvc windows and for the Rector to hold a brief service of Dedication. The new blinds kindly sponsored by a number of parishioners and some of our organisations are now ordered and will be installed shortly. This was then followed by a wonderful lunch. Many thanks are due to the catering team who coordinated many hands to provide substantial plates of Irish Stew, followed by tea/coffee and shortbread. Our congratulations are extended to all who contributed. The generosity of parishioners resulted in a total of ÂŁ937 being donated to the Church Hall Refurbishment Fund and this will grow to well over ÂŁ1,000 when gift aid is received. A wonderful day was had by all. Brian Gillespie 13
Thank you to all members who attended our February meeting. Those present enthusiastically sorted through donations, packed soap bags and arranged household items for those in need of our support. It wasn’t all hard work though as we also had a chance to enjoy some well earned refreshments and we were all winners in the exciting raffle! We plan to continue to support family life in this practical way throughout the rest of the year. A call goes out to all members and parishioners to get involved by donating baby/children’s clothes, household items (such as pots, pans, crockery and cutlery), soap, flannels, toothbrushes, toothpaste, travel size shower gel, combs and paper tissues. All donations can be left in a collection box located in the side porch of the Church. Looking ahead here are some dates for your diaries: Tuesday, 1st March - Overseas meeting - Members who collect donations for overseas causes are asked to bring their donations on that evening. Monday, 4th April - Diocesan Festival Service hosted by Bangor Parish. Any members requiring transport to the service in Bangor should contact me on 07954 577107 and I will seek to arrange lifts, if possible. Please also note change of date for the Summer Outing which will now take place on Thursday, 5th May. We will visit The Secret Garden in Dundonald which will provide the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful gardens. There will also be time to explore the two acre nursery full of plants, tubs and hanging baskets, to gain planting advice from expert horticulturists and finish the evening with a visit to their restaurant. Details of the cost will follow. If you, however, would like to attend and perhaps bring along a friend please contact me to secure your place. Thank you Katrina
Afternoon Group On Monday, 8th March we were joined by Samuel Reid from the Dogs Trust in Ballymena. He gave us a fascinating talk on the history of the charity and the work they do now which involves, not just rehoming dogs, but also microchipping and neutering them. He encouraged anyone who was worried about what would happen to their dog after they passed away to carry a Canine Care card and the Dogs Trust would immediately step in and look after their pet. He photographed the group and promised by the following day we would be part of the Dogs Trust web site. Both Samuel and the rector joined the group for a noisy afternoon tea. Any ladies who would like to join us are very welcome. We meet on the second Monday of each month at 2.30pm in the choir vestry. Joy

Well done to the children who sang Kum Ba Yah at February’s All Age Worship service. During Sunday School in March we will be working on Easter craft activities. I would encourage the children to come to help decorate the church on Saturday, 26th March. The children should all have received a Smartie tube by now - please help them to fill the tube with 20p coins and return by April 10th. Joyce Stevenson
Oh What a night ! On Wednesday 27th January we enrolled our three newest Brownies, Hazel, Janie and Isla in spectacular fashion. The girls stood before their fellow Brownies and a gathering of family and friends to celebrate their enrolment. The evening started with an array of dances and gymnastic displays from all the Brownies and was followed up with a supper prepared by the Brownies who earned their hostess badge as a reward for their efforts. We finished the night with the first ever Brownie raffle with prizes kindly donated by Hillmount Garden Centre, Cherry Orchard Cafe, Origin Skin Care, The Four Seasons, Bell’s Newsagents and Roy’s Bakery and additional prizes donated by the Brownies. The events of the evening raised a whopping £165 which we will be putting to good use within the unit to purchase new resources. Amanda 15
SERVICE OF COMMISSIONING FOR KAREN McALPINE On Sunday, 7th February, a large number of family members, friends and parishioners gathered in St. Columba’s at 7.00pm to support Karen in her commissioning for the office of Diocesan Lay Reader by The Right Reverend Harold Miller, Bishop of Down and Dromore. The service was conducted by our Rector, the Reverend John Auchmuty, assisted by Canon Ken Smyth and Canon Walter Laverty. It was also a delight to welcome back former clergy from St. Columba’s the Venerable Archdeacon Gregor McCamley and his wife Rosemary, the Reverend Gill Withers and the Reverend Robert Ferris. Under the direction of Dr Joe McKee and accompanied by guest organist, Alfred Casement, the choir, of which Karen has been a member for many years, provided a glorious setting of magnificently sung anthems and responses during the service of Holy Communion. Karen’s husband, Kieran, and her father, Billy, each read the Old Testament Lesson and the Epistle while Karen read the Gospel. Unfortunatley Karen’s mother was unwell and unable to attend and also her brother and his family were in Uruguay. The Bishop’s sermon encompassed a personal tribute to Karen’s qualities and achievements both during her training and her eleven years as a Parish Reader in St. Columba’s, encapsulating her forthcoming mission as a fully qualified Diocesan Lay Reader through the five ‘G’s’ - God, Grace, Glory, Gospel and Goodness. Resplendent in her new robes - a gift from her parents - Karen was presented with a Bible from Bishop Harold and the Rector also presented her with a Prayer Book from the parish. The appreciative congregation responded with a prolonged and heartfelt round of applause for Karen at the conclusion of the act of commissioning. Following a beautifully meaningful choral rendering of John Rutter’s Aaronic Blessing, the choir recessed to a splendid Toccata in D minor (Renaud). The stunning new catering facilities at the west end of the church then swung into action for the first time, enabling those who attended to relish refreshments and fellowship in the spacious sociable area created. A uniquely memorable evening was truly enjoyed by everyone present. Ian Noad

As you may have read I have recently been commissioned by Bishop Harold as a Diocesan Lay Reader. That service could not have happened without the commitment of many people and I really want to thank all those involved. As I moved to the lectern to read the Gospel and looked around our church every person there had influenced me in some way over my lifetime – from very formative years at Sunday School and Brownies, through school years, badminton, music and more recently as I studied for this course. Thank you. Please continue to remember me in prayer as I serve God through this Reader Ministry. Karen
Men’s Club All is progressing well within the club. Regular attendances has helped all our in-house competitions to run smoothly under the guidance of our Club Captain, Jim Stevenson. We had mixed fortunes in our last two matches. Our first encounter at St Donard’s ended with a victory for ourselves. A good turnout enjoyed a pleasant evening of fun and fellowship in the superb surroundings of their new hall. We then entertained our friends from St Colmcilles, on the 8th February, who ran out worthy winners on the night. Although tightly contested, the evening was, as it should be, one of great humour and banter, renewing friendships and making new ones. We will have hosted our annual social evening for family, friends and guests on the 15th February shortly after this has gone to print. Details of the evening will follow. Preparations are also in hand for the forthcoming end of season dinner and prize-giving. John Robb

Christmas Tree Festival
Ladies Guild Our film evening in January was a great success. Salmon fishing in the Yemen was enjoyed by all as we munched on popcorn and chocolates. A first time visitor commented that it was a lovely way to spend a January evening. Over a cuppa at the end we all had a chance to socialise and share our views. We have all been admiring the new catering and socialising facilities at the West End of church and on Sunday, 7th of February the Ladies’ Guild were the first group to use these when we provided refreshments following the Commissioning of Karen for the office of Diocesan Lay Reader. We wish Karen every blessing for the years ahead. (As a member of the choir may I also say that the acoustics are greatly enhanced.) AN IMPORTANT DATE FOR YOUR DIARY ------SATURDAY, 23rd APRIL 2016. The Guild are busy arranging a ‘HEALTH AND FITNESS FORUM’ to be held in our church hall from 10.30am - 12.30pm. This is being held on a Saturday morning to enable as many as possible to attend although this means that the professionals are giving up their free time to help us, so PLEASE give them and us your support. The East Belfast Community Development Association have come on board to help us arrange this event and we also have professionals from our congregation. PLEASE give all these people a big St. Columba’s welcome. Imelda

This month we are meeting on:Monday, 14th March, 12.30pm – lunch at Hillmount Garden Centre If you are free do come along. Come on your own or bring a friend or two. All are very welcome. Railway and Model Club Our cemetery, at St Columba of the Glen, has been laid out and tombstones added. We may even have a funeral at the church, in the near future. We are currently looking for Clergy, in “00” scale.....perhaps we will have to make them ourselves!! I’m sure we will have to get the Rector’s permission for the first funeral, so must remember to ask him for advice. Our main station (Kensington) will soon have a new footbridge. The paintwork is almost completed, thanks to Richard Beckwith’s efforts. The large storage warehouse is now settled in its own grounds, with plenty of parking space, thanks to John Robb. The .N. gauge baseboard is almost completed, and track plans are being calculated and discussed....more news next month. As our two railway layouts proceed, the other part of our name (Model Club) is starting to awaken. A WW2 Battle Class destroyer is being built and a number of 1/1200 scale ships are making an entrance. The 1/1200 scale is used by those who play naval wargames on a table top. A battleship will sit comfortably in the palm of the hand. A Clyde Puffer sits comfortably on the nail of my small finger.....try painting one of those!! It is all happening, so why not come and join us Until next month, David

LADIES BOWLS This is our last month for indoor bowling - it has seemed a very short season and in April some of us will be moving outdoors. We had our annual meeting with Knock Presbyterian last month - a very pleasant day meeting old friends. During March we will play our Pairs Competition for the Eileen Madill Shield. Thanks to the men for laying down the mats each week and to our loyal members who braved the weather and “the hill on Monday afternoons. Phyllis Newton
Youth Etc. Youth Etc. visited Vertigo trampoline park at Newtownbreda on Saturday, 23rd January, where they enjoyed an hours worth of trampoline fun. It was great to have some new members coming along. Exhausted, happy and thirsty members of the group finally came off the trampolines. There was many a glowing face to be seen which nicely matched the red bounce socks. The helpful, friendly staff made this an occasion enjoyed by all. David
