Rector’s Letter
Dear Parishioner,
PATRONAL FESTIVAL SERVICES SUNDAY 4TH JUNE I invite you to join us in St Columba’s on Sunday 4th June for our Patronal Festival services. This will be an opportunity for us all to give thanks to God for the life and witness of our Patron Saint. We can receive good encouragement from St. Columba as he retained his Christian belief throughout the many situations he experienced, even in the most testing of times. On different occasions, Columba demonstrated through his strong faith in God that new beginnings and fresh starts were possible. What an inspiration that is for us in our daily walk with God! That is just the focus which we require as we approach our Patronal Festival and move beyond it to face our future challenges with greater confidence. I look forward to welcoming the Bishop of Tuam, Killala and Achonry, the Right Reverend Patrick Rooke at our Patronal Festival Eucharist at 10.30am on that day. It will be good to have the Bishop of my home diocese with us on this most significant day for our parish. I have had the privilege of knowing Bishop Rooke for many years when he served as Rector of Agherton in Portstewart and as Dean of Armagh before his consecration as Bishop. Our strong emphasis on ecumenical outreach will be reflected in Choral Evensong at 7pm that evening when we will be joined by the Clergy and laity of the Belmont and District Churches for the united service to mark Pentecost. As our Parish Prayer reminds us, “God, our Heavenly Father, make the door of our Church wide enough to welcome all who need human love, fellowship and a Father’s care….” It is always a delight to welcome members of the local churches to our parish. They are all very welcome here. The preacher at this service will be the Rector of our neighbouring parish of St Mark’s, Dundela, the Reverend Helene T. Steed. 2
PATRONAL FESTIVAL CHOIR CONCERT SATURDAY 24TH JUNE Our Parish Organist and Choral Director, Dr Joe McKee, along with the Choir are working hard with their preparations for this very popular annual concert. This is an opportunity for our parish and community to come together for an evening of musical excellence in our beautiful church. Please invite your family, neighbours and friends to join us when everyone will receive a warm welcome upon arrival. It would be terrific if the church was full to capacity as we reflect on Columba’s legacy through music, which is such an important part of our Sunday worship. There will be an opportunity for everyone to meet up with each other as the Catering Committee serve refreshments which will be outside on the lawn – weather permitting! As we approach our Patronal Festival Services and the Choir Concert, please include the collect for St Columba in your daily devotions: O God, you called your servant Columba from among the princes of this land to be a herald and evangelist of your kingdom: Grant that your Church, remembering his faith and courage, may so proclaim the splendour of your grace that people everywhere will come to know your Son as their Saviour, and serve him as their King; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. AMEN. Yours in His Service,
PARISH PRAYER
God, our Heavenly Father, make the door of our Church wide enough to welcome all who need human love, fellowship and a Father’s care; but narrow enough to shut out all envy, pride and hatred. Here may the tempted find help, the sorrowing receive comfort and the penitent be assured of your mercy. And here may all your children renew their strength and go on their way in hope and joy; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. Bishop Thomas Ken 1637-1711 3

Having retired some years ago, moved house and inherited with it a large garden, my wife Sandra and I set about putting our own stamp on both. Although keeping the garden in shape entails quite a lot of work it never ceases to give us both great pleasure as we enjoy seeing the changes that the different seasons bring to the various flowers and shrubs. In Church, several weeks ago, the daughter of a fellow parishioner that we have known since a child was baptised, and it made me think how ” life” is like the different plants in the garden – they grow, produce new shoots, which then, when lovingly nurtured, bloom in the company of one another.
Thought for the Month
Bill Gordon Our sincere thanks to Bill for sharing his ‘Thought’ with us. The July/August ‘Thought for the Month’ will be written by Irene Grey.
Railway and Model Club Well what do you know...it’s nearly summer again? As in previous years, we will probably have a maintenance crew on over June, July and August. Damp and rust can seriously affect the track, so we try to keep rolling stock moving on a regular basis. (That is our excuse and we are sticking to it). St Columba in the Glen Rectory has had its summer makeover and the Village Conservationist (yours truly) is ensuring that the new fencing is completed. All the hedges, around the Affordable Housing Terrace, the Rector’s Retreat etc. must also be kept up to scratch. The Village Planning Officer (John Robb) is completing the next batch of benches and other seating for the beautiful park areas around the village. Our (small) N gauge layout is now well developed, with three trains running over the past couple of weeks. The N gauge Development Officer (Ian Parsons) has completed the main station block, and further scenery will follow shortly. That’s all for this month. Keep ‘er rollin’. David. 6

Ladies Guild What an ending to our year! Yes, Father Martin O’ Hagan’s visit was truly a most enjoyable feast to end a programme of very mixed topics. Father Martin began by telling us that his life has been a journey of music starting from his home in Claudy where, thanks to his mother, music was an integral part of family life. Five of the six children sang and formed a group travelling around to various events - a notable one was the opening of The Chimney Corner Restaurant.
Alongside education his musical career flourished at school in Garrontower - where his tenor voice qualified him for female roles then University at Queens Belfast and at the Irish College in Rome. When the three friends began working in Down and Connor Diocese they sang with Cappella Caeciliana but greater things were calling and “The Priests” were formed. Their first album was released in November 2008 and their most recent at the end of last year, (these may be purchased online from Amazon.co.uk). Father Martin sang the beautiful traditional Irish folk song “She moves through the Fair” to finish. This was such a happy evening shared by parishioners, visitors from local churches and friends of Father Martin from the days when he worked in East

Belfast. Then we all mingled over supper while others queued to speak to Father! I was also privileged to attend the annual prize giving of the Bowling Club at Neills Hill when the Rector presented prizes to Helen Coates and Joan Calderwood. Thanks to Phyllis Newton for all her hard work as Honorary Secretary but she says it’s time for someone to take on the mantle. As the club are affiliated to the Ladies Guild a new secretary will be elected at our Annual General Meeting. It was with the greatest sadness that we heard of the death of our long serving treasurer, Yvonne Cadden. Yvonne was just completing 30 years’ service to the Ladies Guild and her hard work and advice will be missed. She kept tight control of our finances and not a penny was wasted. Her very special humour will be missed from our Committee Meetings. Rest in Peace dear friend. Imelda
PAUSE
If you are free on Wednesday, 21st June, do ‘pause’ at the Secret Garden at Dundonald, at around 10.30am for tea/coffee and perhaps a scone or tray bake. If you haven’t joined us before you will receive a very warm welcome from those who are there. I don’t know who will turn up but there is always plenty to chat about. Come on your own or bring a friend or two. We look forward to seeing you there. If you require further details or help with transport please contact me. Eileen (02890203684)

SUNDAY SCHOOL PRIZE GIVING SUNDAY 11th JUNE The Sunday School Prize Giving service will take place at the All Age Worship Service on Sunday 11th June at 10.30am. This joyful occasion will be an opportunity for us to congratulate the children on their church attendance and achievements throughout the year. They have all worked very hard and it has been encouraging to see the good progress which they have made in their understanding of the Christian faith. It has been delightful to see more of the children reading lessons and leading us in our prayers on the first Sunday of each month. They enhance our worship in a most wonderful way. I am most grateful to our Sunday School Superintendent, Joyce Stevenson, the teachers and helpers for their deep commitment and support during the academic year in this important aspect of our church work in St Columba’s. We are extremely fortunate to have such a strong team of teachers and helpers, and I thank them all for their hard work. Patricia Wilson has shared teaching with Louise Craig in our Junior Class over many years and has seen many of our Sunday School children grow in their knowledge of God and the Christian Faith. Patricia now wishes to retire from the Sunday School team following many years of conscientious teaching. I thank Patricia for all her support and wish her a happy retirement. The Rector.
MUMS AND TOTS We have had a busy but very happy year. We finish on Friday, 16th June and will be sorry to say goodbye to those moving on to Nursery but we are also looking forward to welcoming new faces when we start again on Friday, 8th September. Anne 10

Since I last wrote for the magazine some of our members plus Irene Gray (former Area Secretary) attended the Mothers’ Union Festival Service on Monday 27th March, 2017 in Dromore Cathedral. The speaker was Bishop Harold Miller. This is a lovely service and it’s great to meet up with friends from different parishes. We will be winding up this year on 9th May 2017 with an evening of testing our skills at curling with our friends in the Mothers’ Union. The following weekend will see us setting off to Newcastle, Co. Down for a few days of good fresh air and plenty of exercise. As the evenings are brighter and hopefully drier during May and June we will be walking each Tuesday evening along by the river Lagan or by the seashore or it could be a trip round Stormont grounds as this is always a favourite. The evening will I’m sure end with that welcomed cuppa. See you on 12th September, 2017. Maureen

10.30am Patronal Festival Eucharist followed by refreshments Preacher: The Right Reverend Patrick Rooke, Bishop of Tuam, Killala & Achonry 7.00pm BDCC Choral Evensong followed by refreshments Preacher: The Reverend Helene Steed Rector of St Mark’s, Dundela The Right Reverend Patrick Rooke, Bishop of Tuam, Killala and Achonry The united diocese of Tuam, Killala and Achonry covers all of County Mayo, much of Counties Galway and Sligo and a small portion of County Roscommon. Geographically it forms one of the largest dioceses in the Church of Ireland but numerically is the smallest with fewer than two thousand parishioners spread across nine parochial cures. It is also the Rector’s home diocese, as he was a parishioner of St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church in Galway. Bishop Rooke will be known to many parishioners, as prior to moving to the West of Ireland, he served as Rector of Agherton Parish in Portstewart and more recently as Dean of Armagh.
The Reverend Helene Steed, Rector of St Mark’s, Dundela Born in Gothenburg in Sweden, Reverend Steed was ordained as a minister there in January 1996. As part of her MA, she spent time in Lincoln and Nottingham, as well as completing a two and a half month field study in South Africa. Then she and her English-born husband Christopher made friends with a Church of Ireland rector “many years ago in Wales” and it was through him that Helene moved to a a post in Cork in 2004. She was Rector of Clones and also Archdeacon of Clogher before moving to St Mark’s, Dundela last year. 12

The Mothers’ Union Triennial General Meeting took place in the Church Hall on Tuesday 2nd May. This meeting provided an opportunity for members to review the work during the past three years in addition to planning for the future. The Diocesan Vice-President, Roberta Rogers, kindly read the Branch Leader’s report as Jill Gillespie was unable to attend the meeting. It was a delight for me to preside at the meeting and to provide support to the work of Mothers’ Union in St Columba’s. I had the privilege of growing up in a home where my mother was an active member of the Mothers’ Union in the Diocese of Tuam, Killala and Achonry, where, for a period she served as Diocesan President. This gave me a deep awareness of the importance of the Aims and Objects of the Mothers’ Union, which seek to promote marriage along with home and family life. In my address at the meeting, I said, “In our rapidly changing society, it is important that the Mothers’ Union, at branch level, connects in a fresh way to provide the support which is required in the busy homes of our parish. This will involve looking creatively at the programme and the schedule of meetings. It is essential that meetings take place at a time which will enable the majority of people to attend and that the activities will offer blessing and encouragement. The Mothers’ Union branch in St Columba’s has given invaluable support to many members, including the Indoor Members, in years past and continues to do so now. However, there can be no room for complacency! It would be a great joy to encourage new members to join Mothers’ Union, in particular those with young families. During this past week, I welcomed three new families to St Columba’s. As we now approach the elections, I wish to thank all those who have served as Office Bearers and on the Committee during the past three years. In particular, I thank Branch Leader Jill Gillespie, who has had a busy time as she kindly provided support to the Honorary Treasurer and Honorary Secretary. Jill now wishes to retire as Branch Leader and I wish her every blessing for the future. I am very pleased to appoint Barbara Laverty as the new Branch Leader. She brings a wealth of experience to this important role as she was an active Mothers’ Union member in St John’s, Orangefield, where her husband, The Reverend Canon Walter Laverty, was Rector. I am delighted that Barbara has accepted my invitation to serve as our new Branch Leader and I assure her of my full support”. The new Honorary Treasurer is Yvonne Robb.and the new Honorary Secretary is Joyce Stevenson. 14
All places on the committee were filled. It is encouraging that there is a new team of Office Bearers and Committee members duly appointed and elected for the following three years. Following the meeting, everyone enjoyed a delicious supper in the Church Hall. The Rector Our last meeting of this term is our Summer outing which is due to be held on Tuesday 6 June. It will take the form of a Pilgrimage Tour of the Titanic Quarter on the Wee Tram with Rev Chris Bennett, followed by dinner at Horatio Todds Restaurant. The cost of the Tram tour is £6 (payable on the night), dinner is £15.95 (for 2 courses and a glass of wine). Please note a £5 deposit and pre-orders for dinner are required. If you would like to attend please contact Katrina Dukelow on 07954577107, as soon as possible. Many thanks, Katrina and Jill
Afternoon Group Summer Outing
On Monday, 8th May 28 intrepid explorers set out by coach from St Columba’s, Knock bound for Killyleagh. We were greeted at the castle by the owner Gawn Rowan Hamilton. He gave us a tour of the garden and the castle including a bit of the history of his family who have lived there since 1625. Some of the party managed to reach the top of the turret while others were happy to remain on the ground floor. We were joined by Clive Scoular who, over lunch in the Dufferin Arms, told us about some of the famous sons of Killyleagh. A coach tour of the area followed with visits to the Hans Sloan statue, the Church of Ireland and its graveyard and Henry Cooke’s Presbyterian church. The trip finished with afternoon tea in the Old Post Office, Lisbane. The spread was marvellous and we were even provided with boxes to take home anything we couldn’t manage to eat. 28 very tired ladies were returned home safe and sound. The only calamity was a missing pair of sunglasses - please check you didn’t arrive home with an extra pair. Thank you for a lovely year with the afternoon group. We wish all our members a great summer and look forward to welcoming you all back to our next meeting on Monday 11th September. Joy 15
ALL AGE WORSHIP VISIT OF JONATHAN HALL It was a great joy to welcome Jonathan Hall to our All Age Worship service in St Columba’s on Sunday 7th May, where he gave a detailed presentation of his recent visit to Sierra Leone. Jonathan joined members of a Vision Aid Overseas team who went to conduct eye examinations and dispense spectacles to people in this region. Sierra Leone is approximate in size to Ireland, with a population of seven million and only one optometrist for so many people. During his presentation, Jonathan made direct reference to people that he personally saw and the immense difference that spectacles made to their lives, allowing them to be able to go about their work more effectively. The picture of a very young child smiling widely with a pair of glasses clearly demonstrated to us all the reason why Jonathan and his fellow team members went to Sierra Leone to do this important life-changing work. That pair of spectacles gave hope and fresh opportunities to that young child. We had a unique opportunity on that day to financially support the work of Vision Aid Overseas through the proceeds from the refreshments, which raised £464.88. This money will go to further assist with their valuable work. Following our Week of Mission with the Bishop of Connor 18 months ago, with the theme “Connections”, we connected with our local community in this innovative way by inviting Jonathan Hall, who is well known to many of us from his optical business in Kings Square. Thank you for your generous support for this most worthy cause. THE RECTOR 16
At a loose end? We are looking for volunteers to do a bit of gardening and tidying of the church grounds during the summer and autumn months to keep the church and hall looking smart. If you can spare any time and would like to help, just come along whenever it suits you, with whatever equipment you may need and work at a time and speed to suit yourself. All help will be greatly appreciated. Bring along a friend or relative who enjoys gardening to help if you like! The area includes the church gardens, car park, path and area around the church hall. Thank you for your time and consideration!
Can you make the change? To protect our parishioners and staff, we would be grateful if you would consider making the change from church envelopes to Standing Order as a means of financial giving. Our local parish bank, First Trust in Ballyhackamore is closing shortly and accounts are transferring into Belfast city centre. This poses an increased security risk for our banking team. Many people already use Standing Order in St Columba’s. Instead of hunting for cash or writing cheques for your church envelopes each week, this means that you give directly to our bank, making it faster and more convenient for you. It allows us to reduce the costs of ordering church envelopes as well as protecting those who handle the cash, and reducing the potential for errors. You can check your bank statement each month to see how much you have given. Did you know that you can also pay Charities and Mission gifts by this method also? Why not speak to our Parish Administrator on 02890 656891, who would be delighted to help you organise this, Mon – Fri 9am – 1pm. Thank you to those parishioners who already use Standing Orders!

Patronal Concert 2017 Saturday, 24th June at 7.00pm The annual summer concert associated with our celebrations for our Patron Saint will be held on Saturday, 24th June, starting at 7.00pm. The early start is designed to catch as much evening sun as possible for the refreshments which follow the event. Last year we had superb weather which gave a large number of parishioners and friends adequate time to relax over drinks and nibbles at the back of the church and on the lawn after the concert. The programme itself lasts just a little over an hour to allow time to chat afterwards. This year’s format will follow the pattern set over the past three years. The Parish Choir and vocal soloists will perform music from early composers such as William Croft and Henry Purce I I, through Haydn and Faure, then into the more recent past with Stanford and Walford Davies, up to John Rutter and Martin How. The organ will be played by Nigel McClintock, Director of Music at St Peter’s Cathedral, Belfast. The Summer Concert, along with the earlier Spring Recital this year, have been organised to provide choral scholarships for a couple of our younger singers. Caroline McCartney and Ramesh Wilson have made personal commitments to the choir and we think it entirely appropriate that we should do what we can to support them in their wider musical development. Over the summer months alone both of these young singers will be involved in residential courses which carry significant costs. We would like to be able to give some modest support. You will be able to hear both Caroline and Ramesh as soloists in the summer concert. The Choir would also hope to be in a position to give a significant sum to Parish Funds from this event. There is no admission charge but you are invited to make a voluntary contribution. Please come along and bring family and friends to support this worthwhile musical event. Joe

Confirmation
The Bishop of Down and Dromore, the Right Reverend Harold Miller, administered the rite of confirmation in Mount Merrion Parish on Sunday, 30th April where twenty-two people were confirmed and became full communicant members of the church. It was a great privilege for me to present Sophie King and Kent Irwin to the Bishop for confirmation at that service. It was a most significant occasion for them and their families. Sophie and Kent received Holy Communion for the first time at the 8.15am service at St Columba’s on Sunday 7th May. I look forward to presenting Daniel Sadlier, John Kerr and Bill Craven to the Bishop for confirmation in St Mark’s, Newtownards on Sunday, 25th June. Please remember all those who have been recently confirmed and those preparing for confirmation in your prayers.
